Q&A: Realtors Pick Celebs to Work With DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

Are there certain celebrities Realtors would want to work with to buy or sell a house, and why? The Sun Gazette asked some local agents that question. Here are their answers: Diane Lewis, Washington Fine Properties: “Would love to meet Matt Damon and work with him to buy or sell a home. He seems like a nice guy with a great sense of humor, and I love his movies. I’d also love to meet and work with Alex Ovechkin. We are big Caps fans and go to a lot of games. He seems like a great guy, and it would be fun to work with him.” Dawn Wilson, Keller Williams: “I would like to work with Brad Pitt. From what I have read, he has a very good understanding of building homes and design as well as a passion for it. It would be interesting to get his perspective on homes we see and what changes he would want to make to them, or, if he was selling, what he liked about his current home or why he designed something a certain way.” Vivian Lyons, Lyons McGuire Homes and Estates: “George Clooney. Why? [Laughs.] What part of ‘George Clooney’ did you not understand?” Archie Harders, Long and Foster: “Michelle Obama, because she is witty, decisive and family-centered.”

A number of local top real-estate professionals picked Ellen DeGeneres as the celebrity they’d most want to work with. (Warner Bros Television)

Barbara Lewis, Washington Fine Properties: “Would love to meet Diane Sawyer and work with her in the purchase or sale of a home. I admire Diane for her thorough and compassionate reporting and miss her on the evening news. Would love to have the opportunity to ask her about various stories she has covered.” Mary Roberge, McEnearney Associates: “By far, I would love to sell Barbra Streisand’s home. She has amazing taste and I’ve always admired her and have been a huge fan. Years ago, I had the privilege of attending my grandmother’s wedding reception just below Streisand’s penthouse in New York City. You could see her eye

for design just by observing her terrace and the beautiful flowers tumbling down above us.” Mark Middendorf, Long and Foster: “Ellen DeGeneres would be my choice. She is a funny person, she has a lot of money and she has bought five houses in the last six years. I think she needs a home in the D.C. area.” Tania Hosmer, Keller Williams: “I would love to work with Oprah Winfrey. She is a very strong woman, very smart and successful. I imagine that she would be very decisive in her home-buying decision (always a plus), and could afford an amazing luxury property.”

Craig Mastrangelo, Re/Max Allegiance: “I would like to work with Chip and Joanna Gaines, from ‘Fixer Upper.’ I appreciate their vision in the homes they work with and often times produce homes that tap into what today’s buyers are looking for in today’s market. I really like Joanna’s design aesthetic. So it is enjoyable to me to see how they get a house from bare bones to one that could be featured in many architectural magazines.” Karon Ricker, McEnearney Associates, McLean: “My immediate attention directs me to Bradley Inman, Internet entrepreneur and founder of several online and offline companies, including the one that we as real estate experts refer to daily, Inman News. In my opinion, he is in the know of what is coming down the pipeline and has his finger on the pulse of our evolving industry and ever-changing business model. I would love to sell his homes and help him make a purchase.” Mike Highman, Acquest Realty, Inc: “[Mad Magazine cover boy] Alfred E. Neuman. I believe we all just need a dose of humor and not be BS’ed with marketing-faced celebrities.” Casey Samson, Samson Properties: “All my clients are celebrities to me. If you don’t think that, you should not be in the business. With that said, Mark Wahl-

Celebrities: Who Would the Pros Seek Out? Continued from Page 3 berg is the coolest guy on the planet and my wife would not let me work with [actress] Marisa Tomei.” Joan Stansfield, Keller Williams: “Hands down, I’d love to work with Bono. My love of music and a deep respect for his ability to engage in both spheres of entertainment and politics. He is not only a singer, songwriter, musician, venture capitalist, businessman and philanthropist, he is a crusader for the world’s poor and an inspiration to millions. And everyone I know who knows him personally says he’s extremely charming, polite and, most important to me, he’s a man of God.” Jennifer Harper Thornett, Washington Fine Properties: “We have been privileged to work with various clients who are in the public eye, whether it be sports figures or politicians, etc. Our philosophy and hope is that we make all of our clients feel like they are celebrities in our world.” Lori Shafran, Yeonas and Shafran Real Estate: “The appropriate answer is every client is a celebrity in their own way. Going back, I would have liked to sell a house to a Lucille Ball or Bob Hope, because they bring much brightness and laughter into a living room.” Casey Margenau, Casey Margenau Fine Homes and Estates: “I would have liked to sell Ivanka Trump her $5 million

house, but I don’t work in D.C. I’m just like anybody else. If a celebrity wants to spend a ton of money, I would like to sell them a house.” Jillian Keck, McEnearney Associates: “Ellen DeGeneres would be the best next buyer in our D.C. marketplace. Our market could use some light-hearted laughter and a break from the constant strain of divided politics. It would be very entertaining while touring homes. And, hey, I would love to get on that invite list for a few hosted dinners at her place.” Dean Yeonas, Yeonas and Shafran Real Estate: “I’d like to sell to a hot-shot guitar player like Dr. John from New Orleans.” Christy Hertel, McEnearney Associates: “Gayle King of CBS News. She is involved with everything and is so down to earth. She went to the University of Maryland and has an appreciation of D.C. and all it has to offer. I feel like I would be able to relate to her needs and find her the perfect place.” Karen Briscoe, Huckaby Briscoe Group: “It would be fascinating and a great challenge to sell to Barbara Corcoran [of ‘Shark Tank’] because she knows so much about the real-estate industry. That would be a real neat thing to have her as a client.” Jean Beatty, McEnearney Associates: “I would love to work with Michelle

Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in ‘Downton Abbey.’ She would most likely appreciate quality craftsmanship, and I would love to ask her questions about the Abbey.” Betsy Twigg, Washington Fine

Properties: “I would be so jazzed to sell a house to Janet Yellen [chair of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System) and talk finances and real estate with her. She is so talented and brilliant, and doesn’t need the limelight.” Ann Wilson, Keller Williams: “I would live to sell to Brad Pitt. There is a vibe about him. He is such a cool guy, he is smart and a great businessman. He has so much energy and he has so much talent, and so much going on.” Adam Gallegos, Arbour Realty: “I would have a good time working with Kirk Cousins, because he may sign a big contract soon and might be in need of a house.” Jack Shafran, Yeonas and Shafran Real Estate: “We consider all purchasers of equal value and treat them all the same. That is the right answer.” Natalie Roy, Keller Williams: “I would love to take Julia Louis-Dreyfus on a bicycling house-hunt. Hopefully she bikes better than she dances! She stars in two of my all-time favorite shows, ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Veep.’” Carol Temple, Coldwell Banker: “Tom Selleck. The reason is he comes across as being very thoughtful and very decisive. He is not wishy washy and I anticipate he is very thorough and someone who would follow through and a person of high intensity.”

Rocky Run Farm Celebrates History, Style Original Property Dates to 1800s; Updates Showcase 21st-Century Living

W

ith the winter real estate market set to transition shortly to spring, the search is on for exceptional properties in picture-perfect locales. And we have done the work for you in tracking down this week’s featured property, which offers up historic provenance but a very forward-looking, modern persona. Set among lush landscaping that will pop to life as warmer weather arrives, Rocky Run Farm’s history dates back to the late 19th century. But TLC and a wide array of upgrades from the current owners mean the property – set on 1.32 acres with a pool, and close to Tysons and McLean – is in turnkey condition and waiting to charm its new arrivals. The property currently is on the market, listed at $2,650,000 by Lilian Jorgenson of Long & Foster Real Estate. Exceptionality abounds; the curb appeal is enhanced by the mature plantings that shade the main house from both the summer sun and from the street outside. Privacy abounds. A lovely front walk takes us to a welcome on the promenade porch, where we head into the foyer and begin our exploration of the property. Designed both for family living and for entertaining in style, the home is a perfect combination of style and substance. The large drawing room (living room) features a Hunt Country fireplace, front bow window and enough size (36x14) to host a spectacular gathering. The grand dining salon, with its own fireplace as well as china display shelves, can accommodate a large ensemble, as well. The country kitchen is a delight for the senses, with everything close at hand. The gourmet in each of us will not be disappointed in the accoutrements, and the ambiance is marvelous. The McLean Room is an sumptuous yet graciously informal gathering space, with another fireplace, pegged-wood floor and elegant bow alcove. A lovely library with build-in cabinetry overlooks a side verandah, with space for a porch swing. A main-level master retreat is a desirable element that showcases the versatility of the design. It also could be used as a home office, in-law suite of studio. To the second level we go, where

an upper master retreat is a beacon of privacy, with all the features one would expect. There also are four additional bedrooms here (three with fireplaces and one with a cape ceiling) plus a hideaway perfect for study or exercise. The rear yard is highlighted by the large pool, while the poolhouse features a multi-purpose area, kitchenette and cabana-style bathroom. All this serenity, and yet you are close to the corridors of power and all the features of urban-village living! Fairfax: December Closes Out the Year Home sales across Fairfax County in December closed out the year lower than the same point in 2015, while the average sales price of single-family homes rose, according to new figures. A total of 1,087 properties changes hands last month, according to figures reported Jan. 11 by RealEstate Business Intelligence, an arm of the local multiple-listing service. That’s down 5.5 percent from December 2015. The average sales price of all properties that went to closing stood at $555,511, up 3 percent from a year before. The increase was due in part to a higher percentage of single-family homes in the mix, which offset declines in the two other sectors of the market: • The average price of a single-family home rose 1.7 percent to $728,356. • The average price of an attached home, such as a townhouse or rowhouse, was down 1.4 percent to $373,861. • The average price of a condominium was down 2.8 percent to $275,574. The median sales price of all properties that went to closing for the month was $470,000, up 3.3 percent. A total of 87 transactions were for more than $1 million. Total sales volume for the month was $603.8 million, down 2.7 percent from a year before. Of homes that sold in December, the average length of time between listing and ratified sales contract was 65 days, an improvement from the 67 days required a year before, while homes sold for an average of 96.6 percent of listing price, up from 95.9 percent. Of homes that sold, conventional mortgages represented the method of transacting sales in 691 cases, followed by cash (124) and VA-backed mortgages (110). Inventory is tighter than a year before, with the 2,090 properties available for prospective purchasers about 19 percent lower than at the end of 2015. Where is the market headed? The message is a little mixed, with homes under contract up nearly 11 percent but pending sales down about 5 percent from a year ago. Figures represent most, but not all, homes on the market. All figures are preliminary, and are subject to revision. N.Va. Homes Sales Dip, Prices Rise in December: Year-over-year home sales across Northern Virginia declined in December, but average and median sales prices were up, according to new data. A total of 1,558 properties went to closing during the month, according to figures reported Jan. 10 by RealEstate Business Intelligence, an arm of the local multiple-listing service. That’s down 4 percent from the 1,623 sales recorded in December 2015, although the decline couldn’t prevent 2016’s total sales being up 3.8 percent from 2015’s. Figures represent transactions in

Celebrities: Big-Name Homes on the Market Throughout the past year, homes associated with famous names from the past and present went on the market, from Beverly Hills to Miami to New York City. A host of them have been highlighted by www.toptenrealestatedeals.com, which provides weekly updates on historic, celebrity and spectacular homes. Among them: “Donald Trump’s First Mansion” Back in 1982 when he was still a Democrat, before he was a billionaire and a brand name and reality television star and on his first marriage to Ivana, Donald Trump was a rising star in the New York City real estate world and shopping for his first trophy mansion. Trump’s fabulous homes, that began with that first mansion in Connecticut, is a big part of the man’s story. Trump’s collection of expensive, and even a few historic homes, rivals almost anyone else in the world. His main residence is a posh three-level penthouse at Trump Tower on New York’s Fifth Avenue where he has lived and supervised his vast business operations since 1983. Also in the Gotham area, in 1996 he purchased a 60room mansion in Bedford, N.Y., with three pools and a bowling alley. He later bought Albemarle with a 23,000-square-foot home, vineyard and winery on 2,000 acres in Virginia for $12.7 million, a fraction of the original asking price of $100 million. It is now a B&B known as Albemarle Estate at

Trump Winery with daily room rates ranging from about $400. In 2008, Trump expanded his home stockpile to the West Coast when he purchased a six bedroom, 10,400-square-foot home on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. His #1 trophy home is still his Mar-A-Lago mansion and resort for the ultra wealthy in Palm Beach, Florida that he purchased in 1985 for $10 million. The 1920s mansion with 62,000 square feet and more than 100 rooms was originally built for Post Cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. Donald Trump was only 35 when he and Ivana purchased his starter mansion, a 5.8-acre home on a peninsula in Greenwich for $4 million. Always a family-oriented business, Ivana was also remodeling the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan which Trump purchased in the early 1980s and she was able to incorporate many of the same materials in the decoration of their new home creating a residence dripping in gold leaf, elegant chandeliers and crown moldings. When they divorced in 1992, Ivana won the mansion in the property settlement. She sold the home in 1998 for $15 million and the mansion’s new owners immediately began a renovation to tone it down a bit and also added tennis courts, indoor lap pool, sauna and a 4,000-square-foot addition with guest suites. Originally built in 1939 for Robert Hillas, president of the Superheater Company in New York City, the 19,773-square-foot

Donald Trump was 35 years old when he and his then-wife, Ivana, purchased a “starter mansion” for $4 million. The Connecticut estate recently was on the market for $45 million. (Toptenrealestatedeals.com)

Georgian Colonial main house and guest house have eight bedrooms, thirteen baths, a three-story rotunda foyer with double grand staircase, formal rooms and views of Long Island Sound. Also included is a home theater, putting green, multiple terraces and patios, tennis courts and three fully-equipped staff apartments. Donald Trump’s former Connecticut mansion with major additions, six waterfront acres and a private boat dock was for sale at $45 million. It has recently been taken off the market; it’s unclear whether it’s been sold or simply on pause.

Prince loved the color purple and incorporated it into several of his homes. In 2004, great publicity ensued when he painted a Beverly Hills home he had rented from NBA Basketball star Carlos Boozer in purple stripes, installed a purple carpet with his monogram and changed the plumbing to send water to a hair salon. Boozer filed a lawsuit saying he had broken the terms of his lease, but later withdrew it when Prince paid to have the house returned to its former neutrals. Named as one “of the most influential artists of the rock & roll era,” Prince was in-

Celebrity Homes for Sale Continued from Page 11 ducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, won an Academy Award for his film “Purple Rain” along with seven Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Prince has sold over 100 million records, making him one of the highest paid artists of all time. Though connected with many celebrity women, he married his backup singer, Mayte Garcia, on Valentine’s Day 1996. In 1998, Prince bought a stunning villa in Spain as a gift to his wife. It was west of Marbella in the hills of El Paraiso with views of the sea, mountains, valley and golf course. They decorated it elaborately in pure Prince style. Mayte and Prince divorced in 1999 and sold the villa. The new owner redecorated to tone it down to more universally preferred elegance, and put it on the market in early 2016. Sited on 1.45 subtropical walled and landscaped acres, the 7,535-square-foot villa has 2,583 square feet of terraces for outdoor living with tennis court, pool and three-car garage with additional parking for six. The landscape is softly lit at night affording ambiance for outdoor entertaining. Inside are six bedroom suites including two masters with the grand master encompassing two levels. Public rooms are opulent with good flow, a new fully-equipped kitchen has been reconstructed and the entire villa has been updated with the finest

materials. It is said that this home and its romantic location was the inspiration for many of Prince’s songs. Evert Ebus of Engel & Volkers is the listing agent for the villa, previously priced at $5.99 million, now reduced to $5.2 million. “Zsa Zsa’s Bel Air Mansion” Zsa Zsa Gabor was born in Budapest in 1917 during World War I, became an actress in Vienna at age 15 and was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936. She eventually moved to the United States along with her two sisters (sister Eva starred in the longtime TV hit “Green Acres” and sister Magda married Zsa Zsa’s third husband George Sanders). Her beauty was legendary, her personality bubbly and her accent forever famous. Her nine husbands included Paris Hilton’s great uncle Conrad Hilton and Jack Ryan, the inventor of the Barbie Doll. Zsa Zsa was one of the last of the Hollywood Golden Age movie stars when she died on Dec. 18, 2016. Zsa Zsa purchased her final home in 1973 in Bel Air, California for $250,000. It spanned 9,000 square feet with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and large pool terrace with stunning views. Great Falls Property Showcases Elegance, Features a Stylish Pool Area

A

custom stone and brick showstopper set on a lovely, large, level lot in the sought-after Fox Creek Farm community of Great Falls serves as a wonderful introduction to the upcoming spring real estate market. From the elevator spanning all three levels to the glorious pool area out back, every amenity is in place. And the location? Conveniently set close to Seneca Road and Georgetown Pike, the property is in a world of bucolic splendor, backing to trees. The property currently is on the market, listed at $3,499,000 by Casey Margenau of Casey Margenau Fine Homes and Estates. The community features two-acre lots and brick or stone homes in the range of $2.5 million to $6 million, with slate roofs adding to the ensemble. Picture-perfect curb appeal hints at what awaits when we tour the property, and it all begins in the sumptuous, vibrant foyer, with a creative curved staircase making marvelous use of space. To our left is the large formal living room, ready to host a stylish soirée. It opens to an elegant, versatile space that would work well as a den, with sunlight streaming in from three levels. The dining room also is wonderfully proportioned, easily accommodating a gathering of 10 or so. The kitchen area is a true open standout, with plentiful prep space, topquality appliances and a large breakfast

area that leads to the sunroom overlooking the rear yard and pool (and offering walk-out access). A very amply sized family room proffers a wall of windows over the rear yard, while the home office is tucked away and has a bay window to add to the ambiance. The highlight of the upper level is the master retreat, featuring a large bedroom area with a wall of windows; a hall area that leads to a sitting area (with large windows); a double-sided fireplace; and a master bath that must

be seen to be fully appreciated. There also is plentiful walk-incloset space. Four additional bedrooms are found on the upper level, accessed by either the main stairs or a back staircase. There also is a laundry center, as well as an overlook providing glorious vistas from above the foyer area. More delights await on the walk-out lower level, where an extraordinarily large recreation room (with doublesided fireplace shared with the family room) is the centerpiece attraction. A true showstopper that is augmented by a wet bar. A theater room is another adornment of the lower level, and there is a sitting area that looks out over the rear of the home. Two additional bedrooms can be

found on the lower level, along with an additional laundry center. The pool is sure to be a family-andfriends delight, with the outdoor-living area also featuring changing rooms, a fireplace, bathrooms and more. Articles are prepared by the Sun Gazette’s real estate advertising department on behalf of clients. For information on the home, contact the listing agent. Celebrities: Superstar Real Estate on Market Continued from Page 13 would get up at 3 in the morning and drive out of Bel Air in his milk truck. It seems that Mr. Zurlo eventually rented the home to Howard Hughes for most of the 1960s. According to Zsa Zsa, the house was also owned by Elvis Presley. House guests included John Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger and both George H.W. and George W. Bush. But despite the all-star credibility, Zsa Zsa couldn’t seem to sell it. She put the home on the market in June, 2011, and it became an ongoing saga. Zsa Zsa originally wanted $28 million for her home, but, in a bad real estate market, her agent convinced her to start out at $12.9 million. She had no takers, so she upped the price to $14.9 million in 2012. With mounting money problems due to her poor health and a $10 million Bernie Madoff theft, the home was on the brink of foreclosure, only to be saved through a social media plea from ninth husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt. The prince temporarily rescued the home for Zsa Zsa but he made selling the home much more difficult in the process by making demands that after selling the home, he and Zsa Zsa could continue to live in the home for three years plus a $325,000 a year stipend. Surprisingly, the property sold under those conditions, but

the sale fell through. Afterwards, broker Roger Perry helped arrange a deal between Gabor and a buyer in 2014 that delayed the closing so that she could continue to live in the home until her death. Now, after her death, the developers are mulling two options. They will either resell the property with the construction permits in place, or tear it down and redevelop the property. “Walt Disney’s Palm Springs Retreat” When Roy and Walt Disney co-founded the Walt Disney Co. in 1920, they had dreams of large success, but likely could not have fathomed becoming the world leader in fantasy, cartoon characters and family film. Neither would they have imagined continuing that leadership position in their artistic niche so long after their deaths. Though Walt was the youngest brother, he died at the age of 65 in 1966. Roy was 73 at the time and postponed his retirement in order to open Disney World, which he later named Walt Disney World in honor of his brother. The new park transformed Orlando from a sleepy military and citrus town to America’s most popular family resort vacation destination with over 50 million visitors in 2016. Only three years before his death, Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian, built a vacation home in Palm Springs as a getaway from Walt’s hectic work schedule and to enjoy their later years. The home stayed in

the Disney family until 2015, and the new owners retained the charm and whimsy of the home created by the imaginative couple. At 2,443 square feet, the four-bedroom, four-bath home has the clean lines of midcentury design, private in the front with cheerful red double entry doors and wide open to the outdoors in the back with views of the pool, raised spa, mountains and the Indian Canyons Golf Resort. As with most of the modernist homes of Palm Springs, the focus was on the enjoyment of outdoor living, relaxing and entertaining. Furnished in period furnishings with an

Art Deco flair, bold flushes of color against a neutral background is indicative of Walt’s colorful creations on film. The listing price is $899,000, and the listing agents are Klint Watkins and Ryan Cummings of HK Lane, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate. “Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack Home” After almost 20 years of Las Vegas appearances, Frank Sinatra wanted a place where he and his friends could hang out for an occasional hiatus from their fans in a private location. Celebrities: Why Not Buy a Superstar’s Home? Continued from Page 21 Sinatra referred to himself as an “18karat manic depressive” which was carefully hidden from the public. He was always torn between wanting a solitary place to escape but also somewhere to party with his friends and distract from the depression days. In 1953, Sinatra had co-starred in the film “From Here to Eternity” cast as Private Angelo Maggio and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 1967, Sinatra built a home on five acres 4,300 feet above Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. He named it “Villa Maggio” after his character

in the film. Now for sale, the home is the quiet, private retreat that Sinatra had always wanted. At Villa Maggio, he created the best of both worlds, perfect for entertaining his Rat Pack buddies to soften the lows or keep it to himself when experiencing the highs. The arrangement worked so well that he resided at the rustic estate for 12 years – almost until his death. The 10-acre compound of three buildings is perched on a craggy hilltop surrounded by boulders and exquisite views. Built in rustic style with warm woods, local stone and seven stone fireplaces in the main house, it has two kitchens, dining and

living rooms, a den, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The attached guest quarters have two bedrooms, bath, living room with fireplace and a full kitchen. The detached guest house is two stories with a small kitchen, a bathroom, a stone fireplace and a deck overlooking the view. A private helipad allows guests to fly in and out and there is parking for 25 cars. Although much of the home has been updated such as the commercial-grade kitchen, some of Sinatra’s personal touches are still at the home, including a secret doorway, bathroom wallpaper and a Ronson foodmatic. The current owner’s family

were Sinatra friends and the only occupants since he lived in the home. Markus Canter and Cristie St. James of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Scott Palermo and Jim Sanak of Harcourts Desert Homes are the listing agents. Currently on the market priced at $3.9 million. “Elvis Presley’s Beverly Hills Home” The days of Elvis slouched on a wellworn overstuffed sofa with a plate stacked high with peanut butter and banana sandwiches on his lap are long over for the house that he and Priscilla bought for $400,000 when they were first married in 1967. Back in the day, the gated French Regency house had the great bones that it has today, but 1960s Elvis style was a far cry from the slick, sophisticated home it is today. Along with the home of 5,400 square feet, the property has an attached guest house, large motor court and decadent pool terrace overlooking the city to ocean views. The four-bedroom, five-bath residence is sited on 1.18 acres on a street popularly known as “Billionaires Row,” which is quite the celebrity magnet. The newly renovated interior includes high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-toceiling windows and glass doors that open to the terraces and view. Updates include new flooring, an added laundry room, upgraded electrical, stainless-steel kitchen appliances and resurfaced pool and spa. Oozing both glamor and warmth, the home has a luxurious master suite, skylights and fireplaces including one pool side with fetching venues for entertaining throughout the property. Mauricio Umansky of The Agency in Beverly Hills holds the listing for this newly updated contemporary estate formerly owned by The King of Rock n’ Roll. Priced at $30 million. “Kirk Douglas’ Palm Springs Home” As Kirk Douglas celebrated his 100th birthday at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Dec. 9, he was joined by his wife, his son Michael and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Rickles, important film-executive friends and his cardiologist (who handed him a tall vodka). Celebrities: Why Not Buy a Superstar’s Home? Continued from Page 24 years that he couldn’t have a drink until he turned 100, it was a fitting thing to do. To Kirk Douglas, age is still just a matter of numbers, but it’s still nice to have accumulated more memories than almost anyone else. His Palm Springs home likely held many of the happiest. The longtime vacation home of Kirk and Anne Douglas in the historic Old Las Palmas neighborhood, where they escaped Hollywood for over 40 years until they sold it in 1999, was for sale in 2016. The 4,000-square-foot home, originally designed by Donald Wexler for the owner of the champion racehorse Seabiscuit, retains the purity of Wexler’s original design with its flagstone-and-pecky cypress foyer, walls of floor-to-ceiling glass and beamed ceilings. The open floor plan includes formal dining and sitting areas with casual fireside seating; the original mirrored wet bar reminding of old Hollywood, updated baths and an updated kitchen with the expected granite and stainless steel. The five bedrooms and eight baths include two master suites, Kirk’s suite and Anne’s suite designed each to their personal preferences, both opening to terraces overlooking the mature landscaped grounds. A large interior atrium opens the main rooms to outdoor living and the exterior gated perimeter wall encloses gardens, pool terrace and tennis court. The Douglas home sold above the asking price of $3.45 million. The new owner will

be the next-door neighbor of Leonardo DiCaprio, who purchased Dinah Shore’s former home in 2014. Bennion Deville Homes in Palm Springs was the listing agent. “Adam Levine’s New York Penthouse” Hottie frontman for Maroon 5 and longtime judge on “The Voice,” Adam Levine and his supermodel wife, Behati Prinsloo, seem to be making their own lifestyle changes since welcoming their first child into the world in September, Dusty Rose. Prior to her birth, they put both their Beverly Hills mansion and their trendy New York SoHo loft up for sale. Selling soon after it was listed for $5.4 million to shoe designer Nick Lucio, Adam’s spacious New York loft makes a great bachelor or couples pad, but he converted the second and third bedrooms into open space in 2014, long before the baby news broke, leaving just its one large master suite. Located on a charming cobblestone street, the SoHo cast-iron building dates back to the early 1900s. At 2,800 square feet, the one-bedroom unit still retains its six original columns and exposed brick walls with arches embedded within the brickwork. With 13-foot ceilings and huge windows overlooking Greene Street, the open floor plan makes it feel larger than its square footage indicates with a 60-foot living room that opens to a kitchen with black granite and stainless high-end appliances. The large master suite bath includes jacuzzi, separate shower and large walk-in closet/dressing area.

Not all celebrity-related homes are in the stratosphere, price-wise. This one-time Palm Springs retreat for Walt Disney currently is on the market, priced at less than $1 million. (Toptenrealestatedeals.com)

Adam hasn’t had as much luck with his Beverly Hills mansion, recently reducing the price from $17.5 million to $15.95 million. The listing agents for the New York loft were Adam Mahfouda and Jules Borbely of Oxford Property Group. “Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace” Vacation homes are fairly common among the wealthy and even the not so wealthy, but when designer Pierre Cardin looked for a vacation home, he naturally chose one of the best locations in the world and a one-of-a-kind mansion with unique style. He chose a home on a Mediterranean cliff overlooking the sea made up of bubble

gum pink bubbles. Mid-century architect Antti Lovag designed Le Palais Bulles – the Bubble Palace – in Cannes, France, which was built between 1975 and 1989. Pierre Cardin purchased the home at auction in the early 1990s as a vacation home. He was drawn to the property, saying, “Round shapes have always inspired me,” and compared it to a woman’s body saying “. . . everything is absolutely sensual.” Currently for sale, the connecting bubbles representing one room each, is spread over six levels on 1.75 acres on a cliff with 180-degree-views over the Mediterranean. Michaël Zingraf Real Estate in Cannes, France holds the listing, recently reduced from $456 million to $335 million.

Q&A: Is a Home Office Necessity for Buyers? DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

For buyers, is the home office on its way out or still a big want? The Sun Gazette asked some local agents that question. Here are their answers: Dawn Wilson, Keller Williams: “I still have buyers who want a home office. More and more of my clients are working from home or working from home part of the week, and like having a dedicated space for working if it is possible with their budget. I still have some clients who want built-in shelves for the office, but others do not think built-ins are very important.” Vivian Lyons, Lyons McGuire Homes and Estates: “In the Great Falls market and in upper-end homes, a home office is still desirable.” Jane Price, Weichert: “Home offices are still important, though they may not be called as such. Young busy families want a designated area for equipment, paperwork, etc., that functions well for keeping all aspects of their lives running smoothly, organizing and doing work remotely.” Christy Hertel, McEnearney Associates: “Home offices are still a need, but maybe getting more kid-centric. A family computer and all electronics in one place. It is kind of like a central control for the house, especially with smart-homes coming into play. So they need to be carefully planned with wiring for Internet, wi-fi and cable for computers, printers, TVs, phones, etc.” Jillian Keck, McEnearney Associates: “Buyers are more efficient with their space now more than ever. When a buyer is looking for a home office, they are tending to also use it as a multi-purpose room. Say, a spare bedroom for guests.” Yolanda Mamone, McEnearney Associates: “The home office is very ‘in.’ I have so many requests for large condominiums and cooperatives that have two bedrooms plus a den, or three bedrooms, so that each member of the couple may have their own home office. These individuals I work with are 60 to 80 years old, who want space to continue to work and for a myriad of interests.” Karon Ricker, McEnearney Associates, McLean: “Home offices are going out, in my opinion. Buyers don’t see the value in an office, but rather, they are all about bringing more people into one area of the home. People are also getting creative with spaces.” Casey Samson, Samson Properties: “Offices are a must. More and more people work from home and home offices will always be attractive. If buyers do not need one, they need to consider resale value.” Barbara Lewis, Washington Fine Properties: “Home offices are still desirable. Many more people are working at home or tele-commuting, and they need a designated place to keep their things. While there is a desire to be paperless,

there is still a lot of paper that we need to handle, and all of this is best done in a home office.” Craig Mastrangelo, Re/Max Allegiance: “The past decade has seen a real increase in the percentage of the workforce that is able to telecommute, thus placing an increased need on having separate/ dedicated work space in one’s home. This trend, especially in a highly trafficked area like Northern Virginia, shows no signs of abating.” John Mentis, Long and Foster: “At prices of $1 million and higher, home offices are still desirable. At less than that, buyers are becoming more resolved to the fact that either the home office doesn’t exist or that it’s very small or that it’s makeshift.” Jean Beatty, McEnearney Associates: “The home office is a huge want, and in many cases a need, as so many buyers plan to telecommute. Often, buyers will look for a house with more bedrooms than otherwise needed to enable them to transform one of them into a home office.” Mike Highman, Acquest Realty, Inc: “We are in a mobile-device era and that is exactly what I am experiencing with my buyers. They are not asking specifically for a home office as a criteria during the HBM SUN GAZETTE AD 1-5-2016f.pdf

Q&A: Is Home Office Necessity for Buyers? Continued from Page 29 home search. Their tablets, smart phones, and the cloud are their floating office to be used in the kitchen, family room or wherever. There is no need for home-office space to store file cabinets and huge desktops of long ago. The only space that is needed is for a multi-function-printer unit, and that can be stored in a wired family room wall cabinet.” Diane Lewis, Washington Fine Properties: “More and more people work from home, so there is a need. A new trend is trading the living room for a formal library and still having a working office off the family room.” Joan Stansfield, Keller Williams: “The majority of today’s buyers want or need a home office, or space to create one. I see it in greater demand now than ever. With so many people now working from home, it’s become a must-have.” Mary Roberge, McEnearney Associates: “I am definitely seeing that the home office, if not two, are still a definite want for buyers. The room that I don’t think is desired as much is a media room.” Natalie Roy, Keller Williams: “Home offices continue to be popular with a wide range of buyers. More people are telecommuting and looking for that extra space to set up a designated study or office.”

Jennifer Thornett, Washington Fine Properties: “The home office or library has always been a traditional need/want of buyers, and we don’t see that changing. However, what has changed is that buyers are able to demand more flexibility with regard to the location of their home office within the home or the style of the room.” Betsy Twigg, Washington Fine Properties: “Having a home office is even more important than five years ago. With so many more people telecommuting now, a dedicated space for working from home is needed.” Casey Margenau, Casey Margenau Fine Homes & Estates: “Today, it kind of has to be there and is expected, even in a little tiny condo. People have to have a work space in their house, because everybody has a computer.” Dean Yeonas, Yeonas and Shafran Real Estate: “A work space is very important for most people. We have sold houses where living rooms are converted into a home office. We see that a lot, because formal living rooms aren’t used as much now. A home office is more important.” Karen Briscoe, Huckaby Briscoe Group: “There has to be a designated space, even if they are built-in cabinets. We are seeing a trend to have one big office space in homes, then another smaller space, typically near the kitchen as kind of

the hub and a multi-purpose space.” Rob Ferguson, Re/Max Allegiance: “Going forward, the home office will continue to be of big importance because there are more people working from home, and that isn’t going to change.” Ann Wilson, Keller Williams: “At least some type of small nook is important to have, even if it’s working on a diningroom table.” Gloria Adams, TTR Sothebys International Realty: “Everyone likes to have a work space or library. That is kind of expected now.” Mark Middendorf, Long and Foster: “Husbands and wives want an office, and to have a work space for their children, as well. We are seeing more little work rooms.” Carol Temple, Coldwell Banker: “Dedicated office spaces are a big market now, and there is a big value to that. People want two or three bedrooms and an office. And if not, they will build one or add doors to have one made. They want the ability to work in a separate space.” Adam Gallegos, Arbour Realty: “We are seeing more and more telecommuting, so buyers need home offices more and more. Buyers are willing to convert space. They want a designated work space, even if it’s plopping the laptop on a living room coffee table.” Jack Shafran, Yeonas and Shafran

Real Estate: “Many want that separate room off the kitchen area for kids to do homework, or look up recipes on computers while cooking. The room is for family use. Then, sometimes a whole separate space is still wanted.”

December Continued from Page 8 market representing a scant 1.8-month supply. A year before, there were 3,470 homes on the market, a 2.1-month supply. Where is the market headed as it transitions into the depths of winter? Both pending sales and new pending sales in December were down slightly from a year before, suggesting something of a dormant period before the spring market kicks in during February or March. Figures represent most, but not all, homes on the market. All figures are preliminary, and are subject to revision.
