Police officers have the power to cite, arrest and use physical or even lethal force, but their work is highly stressful and they’re held to a high standard of accountability. “There’s something different every day,” said Fairfax County police Pfc. Mike Crutchman. “It’s very rewarding. You never know what you’re going to encounter.” County police let local reporters and camera crews glimpse their demanding occupation July 20 during a Media Police Academy at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. Established July 1, 1940, the Fairfax County Police Department has about 1,720 employees, including 1,369 sworn officers. The department operates eight district stations (a ninth will open soon) and in coming years will move from the aging Massey Building in the city of Fairfax to a new public-safety headquarters adjacent to the Herrity Building on Government Center Parkway.
