U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th) fended off a challenge by Democrat LuAnn Bennett Nov. 8 to earn a second House term. According to unofficial totals from the Virginia Department of Elections, Comstock as of 11:05 p.m. Election Night had received about 53.3 percent of the vote to Bennett’s 46.4 percent. Comstock, a lawyer and former aide to U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th), was representing the 34th District in the House of Delegates when she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014. Comstock ran on a record of what she said was bipartisan achievements on issues ranging from human trafficking and heroin addiction to research-and-development tax credits and Metrorail safety. “What I bring to the table is a lifetime of relationships and knowledge of how to get things done,” Comstock said during an October endorsement interview with the Sun Gazette and InsideNoVa. The proposal, the most contentious local item on the ballot, went down to defeat in all nine county magisterial districts. As of 11:07 p.m. on Election Night, with 97 percent of precincts reporting, vote tallies registered 55.8 percent against the tax Opponents of the proposed Fairfax County meals tax beat back much of the political establishment, rejecting imposition of a 4-percent surtax on prepared food across the county.

The battle royale of the local area during this election season pitted U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th), left, against Democratic challenger LuAnn Bennett. Despite a poor performance by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in many areas of the sprawling 10th District, Comstock managed to defeat Bennett to win a return ticket to a second term in Congress.
