The Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Regional Trail already has been widened to 18 feet near the Vienna Community Center, but that could be peanuts compared with some new ideas being pondered by town officials and the Urban Land Institute.

Institute representatives met with Vienna leaders and community stakeholders Sept. 6 and 7 to brainstorm upgrades that would improve the trail while respecting its surroundings and promoting safety.

Planner Michael D’Orazio of the Vienna Planning and Zoning Department briefed Vienna Town Council members Oct. 16 about the study group’s findings.

The 45-mile-long trail, which the report referred to as the “central green spine” running through the town, is owned by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, aka NOVA Parks.

The study group suggested the town could improve the trail by: • Building separate lanes for pedestrians and bicyclists, which would allow the latter to transit the area at higher speeds while protecting walkers and joggers.

“I think we should pursue this with the utmost vigor,” said Council member Pasha Majdi.

• Creating a “trail hierarchy” with different amenities for urban and suburban areas. Both zones would feature distinct lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians, separated by landscaping buffers, but the suburban areas also would be planted with

Battle Against Brain Cancer Reaching New Heights Local Residents Get Chance to Rappel Down Office Tower PAUL LARA Staff Writer

Leaning out over the rooftop of the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Mollie Williamson doesn’t seem to notice the splendid views, as she is listening to instructions from the technicians before going over the edge.

Just before beginning her descent down 20 stories, she smiles and spreads her arms, held only by a couple of climbing ropes.

Williamson was one of many who turned out Oct. 7 for Over the Edge for Brain Cancer, sponsored by the non-profit Accelerating Brain Cancer Care, or ABC Squared.

“We fund cutting-edge brain-cancer research,” said Nicola Beddow, the organization’s director of communications and partnerships. “Today is bringing the community together. We have survivors, friends and family that are honoring loved ones they lost to brain cancer.”

Beddow said this is the second year that ABC Squared has collaborated with Over the Edge, a non-profit that provides

safe but powerful experiences for its clients while bringing about positive change in the world.

In the past 20 years, ABC Squared has raised more than $30 million for braincancer research, and points to recent efforts at tailoring therapy based on the genetic makeup of each tumor as reasons to hope, and to continue the search for a

cure.

Each volunteer had qualified for the experience by first raising more than $1,000 toward brain-cancer research. Over the Edge provided the experienced staff who supervised each descent.

Tony Salati, a five-year survivor, says both the diagnosis and treatment have something in common with this event.

“My treatment and today’s event both require a leap of faith, and putting your life in someone else’s hands,” said Salati, who was quick to point out that there is no comparison between the fear and uncertainty of a diagnosis of brain cancer and merely rappelling 20 stories.

“This was a piece of cake,” he said after his descent.

Police Officer Taps Passion to Honor Fallen Personnel BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Outside of his work with the Fairfax County Police Department, Master Police Officer John Alford combines high-speed driving with charitable works that honor fallen first-responders.

Alford attended a NASCAR race in Richmond several years ago, saw a display of diminutive Arena Cup cars and, with a friend, decided to take up his youthful passion for racing again, but this time for a cause.

For the past five years, 91-1 Racing, the non-profit team the pair formed in September 2012, in each race has honored a different Virginia police officer, firefighter or emergency medical technician who has died while protecting the public. The team donates funds from donations and sponsorships to the Virginia Public Safety Foundation.

“When we lose a fallen hero . . . the community really helps out and grieves with us for a short time,” said Alford, four of whose police friends have been killed in the line of duty. “And then, after that ,it goes away. But the families and the work mates uffer for quite a long time. Our race team doesn’t want the citizens to forget about the families.”

The team has participated in about 50 races overall, and on Sept. 30 won a championship race at Shenandoah Speedway.

Alford raced in honor of Floyd “Molly” Price of the Luray Volunteer Fire Department, who died of a heart attack in 1990 while responding to a service call.

Arena cars essentially are high-performance go-carts with stock-car bodies, which can reach speeds of up to 100 mph.

“They are very fast, but very touchy going into turning,” he said.

Drivers ply a one-tenth-of-a-mile-long indoor course that can fit inside a hockey rink. NASCAR driver Kurt Busch drove on such a track one night and compared

the experience to “flying a jet fighter in a fishbowl,” Alford said.

Drivers typically execute 50 laps in a race, each one taking about eight seconds.

“When you have 14 cars going that fast, it’s very chaotic,” Alford said. “There are a lot of wrecks. You’ll end up flipped upside down. If the car is still able to drive and you’re OK, they just flip you over and you keep on going.”

Ricky Dennis, founder and CEO of Arena Racing USA, said the sport’s entry cost is roughly that of a high-quality jet

ski, and its objective is to teach driving skills.

“It’s a contact sport,” Dennis said.

“You have to drive smart. John has proven he’s a competitor and he has patience.

You need both those things to be a race car driver.”

The team’s primary sponsor, Capitol Boiler Works in Springfield, is run by Dwight Sheppard, a U.S. Navy veteran whose family has had several people serve in law enforcement.

Alford “is one of the sincerest, nicest guys I’ve ever met,” Sheppard said.

“When he came in the door, you could see the passion in his eyes.”

In addition to the Arena car, Alford drives a full-sized Sportsman Late Model, which is the size of a regular NASCAR vehicle, but with half the horsepower and a top speed of 120 mph.

Alford said race driving helps him as a police officer, allowing him to anticipate maneuvers during vehicle pursuits. Alford has suffered only minor injuries while racing, including a bruised tailbone and sore ribs. He enjoys the sport for its adrenaline-pumping high speeds and competitiveness.

“It’s the skill that not many people have of being able to drive at those high speeds and being able to maneuver a car,” he said. “A lot of people think you just get Continued on Page 14

Our View: FCPS Is Cornered on Name of School Looks like the leadership of Fairfax County Public Schools has been boxed in when it comes to what to do with the name of J.E.B. Stuart High School.

New Superintendent Scott Brabrand has proposed a number of less-than-inspired options that evolved out of a public process, several with less local connection to the Confederate general School Board members are so eager to replace.

Top of the ranking among the public is to do what we said not long ago: Dump the “J.E.B.,” keep the “Stuart,” declare victory and move on. It’s the obvious solution – so obvious

that maybe the School Board will be savvy enough to latch on. We’ll see.

••• When it comes to the embarrassment that has been this whole renaming controversy, this may take the cake: It sounds as if Fairfax County Public Schools will be setting up an online donation system, allowing the public to pay some of the costs of any name change.

It would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad. Or perhaps it would be sad if it weren’t so hilarious. We can’t tell any more.

There’s nothing that appeals more to politicians of all stripes, at all levels from the Major Leagues to the scrubs, than getting a cotton-candy sugar high and self-congratulatory pat on the back by giving the appearance of “doing something,” when in fact they’ve done nothing at all.

Such was the case with the Falls Church City Council, which last week declared “Columbus Day” henceforth would be replaced by “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in the cozy confines of their fair city. (Neither of its neighbors, Fairfax and

Arlington, seems going this route. Give them time.)

The vote was unanimous; who, after all, would want to be seen siding against the native peoples of North America?

Well, to do the unthinkable and inject facts into the discussion, none of us can claim we or our ancestors are/were native to North America. We all came from different places – albeit at different times, in different ways.

No doubt those who voted for this feel good about themselves. And to politicians, often that’s all that matters.

A Feel-Good Vote That Provides a Sugar High But Nothing of Substance

Monument-Removal Demands Come From Smug Revisionists Who Think They Know Best Editor: Northern transplants to Virginia often wonder why names and monuments honoring Confederate soldiers, generals and sacrifices are so cherished in the commonwealth.

This is what they don’t understand: The uncivil War Between the States was a horrific slaughter that held the Union together by force of arms. In the end, the war ended slavery, but it also destroyed the South economically, reduced its infrastructure to ruin, and killed or crippled the flower of its manhood. In some places, the resulting bitterness would last for generations.

That was the unforeseen consequence of Lincoln’s military invasion. Defeated and subdued, stripped of everything but their honor and self-respect, Southerners built memorials to mourn and honor their dead, their heroes and their “lost

cause” struggle for independence. And they had every right to do so, lest anyone ever forget the terrible price they paid.

The North erected monuments, too, in remembrance of their heroic struggle to save the Union. Throughout the North and South, statues or monuments stand in courthouse squares and city parks in memory of sacrifices made, of heroes honored.

The loss in human life and wealth was staggering. The Civil War was the defining event of American history. Who are these morally superior revisionists who parrot the propaganda that Confederate monuments are nothing but racial statements? That notion is utterly false and disgraceful. Do not slander or demonize Confederate soldiers who honorably defended Virginia and sacrificed their lives.

The Blue and the Gray will never be forgotten. Their monuments remind us not only of courage, bravery and duty performed, but of the enormous price paid for human failures and the sin of slavery. Those virtues, the terrible cost and the ultimate emancipation of fellow Americans are the true legacies of the Civil War. It’s part of our history and heritage.

The battlefields of that epic struggle were consecrated by blood and deeds.

By preserving their monuments and the hallowed ground of their great conflict, we bequeath to future generations visible reminders of the tremendous sacrifices of those whose destiny it was to settle the great issues of the 1860s.

North and South, they were all Americans. Leave their monuments alone.

Editor: As another horrific mass shooting takes place, kudos should go to our local state delegate, Kathleen Murphy, herself a victim of gun violence.

Murphy’s efforts to pass gun-safety legislation and educate her fellow delegates about this egregious problem must be applauded. She has said many times, “With Second Amendment rights come civic responsibilities.”

The latest mass shooting, in Las Vegas, having the notoriety as the worst shooting in U.S. history, came by a person who had an estimated 10 guns at the ready to conduct his criminal act.

Once again – as the crocodile tears, the teeth gnashing and the blame game starts – everyone, including the NRA, should be seriously concerned about each other’s safety and should lead efforts to bring common-sense solutions

to this problem, as Del. Murphy is trying to do. These victims and their bereaved families, and victims of past shootings and their bereaved families, deserve no less.

American Legion Baseball Often the Appropriate Option for Many Editor: As a coach of American Legion baseball, I know that many players are looking for ways to play ball at the college level.

In an effort to be noticed and maybe even earn a baseball scholarship, many players join travel and showcase teams, at costs that can run up to $15,000, including travel. In my 30-plus years of experience, this does not always prove to be the answer.

My suggestion, based on experience, is that players would be better off starting with a few weekend Division III showcases that include schools they are interested in attending. The cost for these usually runs $300 to $500 on average. If players are successful in these and have received college contacts,

then, if interested, players could consider moving up to a Division II showcase, and then Division I. Along with the weekend showcases, players will benefit by playing American Legion Baseball. This program for high-school sophomores through college freshmen is a competitive and challenging level of baseball.

As a coach in the Legion program, I have provided recommendations to college coaches and have seen players attend their chosen schools, some with scholarships.

The combination of a few weekend showcases and American Legion baseball works to improve skills and get noticed, without spending a lot of money.

Control the Local Deer Population Without Resorting to Killing Them Editor: By encouraging drivers to be alert to the potential for deer crossing Northern Virginia’s roads, I hope that the number of vehicle-deer collisions can be reduced. However, it is a shame that municipalities and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries do not support the use of birth control as a practical and humane means to address deer populations in metropolitan areas.

Instead, there is a fixation with killing deer through hunting or archery as the solution.

The city of Fairfax is demonstrating an alternative approach, and has engaged in a multi-year deer-spay program with funding from humanitarians rather than the government. Immunocontraception, a type of contraception that uses the deer’s own immune system

to prevent pregnancy, is a viable alternative available to the state, if it would be open to new approaches.

The method has been shown to be effective in a wide range of species, including deer, is not harmful to animals; doesn’t pose a danger to humans; and provides a humane option for urban communities seeking to control the deer population.

Attentive drivers, signs alerting drivers to areas where deer frequently cross the road and slower speeds are all important means to reduce collisions.

Nonetheless, Northern Virginia communities should be open to humanely curbing deer numbers.

It’s become almost as regular as a disco beat: About every other Vienna Police Department “Weekly Highlights” report lists an incident, often noise-related, at Bey Lounge.

The Vienna Planning Commission on Oct. 11 recommended that the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals renew the lounge’s conditional-use permit for live entertainment for one year, but require its owner to take several steps to reduce noise violations at the site.

Located at 303A Mill St., N.E., Bey Lounge fronts onto a commercial zone, but its rear abuts a single-family residential neighborhood on Park Street, N.E. The business obtained conditionaluse permits in 2015 and 2016; the latter year’s permit stipulated that Bey Lounge minimize its live-entertainment noises, respond to complaints, employ people at closing time to help patrons in the parking lot and keep noise to a minimum.

The 2016 permit also limited the lounge’s closing time to midnight from Sunday through Thursday and close at 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

addressed much of the noise problem by having $50,000 worth of sound-proofing and other improvements installed.

“We’ve done everything possible,” Hasrouni said.

But the lounge violated its operating hours on at least once, as documented on June 1 this year, town officials said.

Vienna police have been called to the lounge 54 times since the business received its initial permit on Nov. 18, 2015.

Officers in 28 of those cases found no violations, cited management on 10 occasions, issued warnings on six of those events and responded to 10 cases that did not involve noise.

Of the incidents resulting in citations, one occurred in 2015, five in 2016 and four this year. Only one such instance this year, on Oct. 1, occurred after the lounge’s owner implemented recommended soundproofing measures this spring, town officials said.

Calls from people living at 302 Park St., N.E., accounted for 23 of those requests for police service, amounting to 43 percent of overall complaints involving the lounge and 52 percent of noise complaints, officials said.

Commissioners suggested the lounge’s owner work with neighbors and a sound engineer to mitigate further noise emanating from the property’s rear and roof areas.

The business owners also should increase security at the lounge and do a better job of policing the parking area, commission members said.

The commission voted 6-1 to recommend the BZA extend Bey Lounge’s permit, along with the additional stipulations. Commission member Laurie Cole cast the lone nay vote, and two other members were absent that evening.

“I’m willing to give them this last chance to be good neighbors and get it right,” said commission member Stephen Kenney.

Commission member Mary McCullough agreed, but said this would be the last conditional-use permit she would recommend for the lounge if the complaints did not stop.

The Vienna BZA will take up the Bey Lounge at its Nov. 15 meeting, said Vienna Planning and Zoning Director Patrick Mulhern. Even if the board revokes the lounge’s conditional-use permit, the business still will be able to play music indoors, but not live entertainment, town officials said.

At Health Forum, Panelists Push for Children’s Programs BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

President Trump’s recent executive orders regarding health care may lead to reduced coverage or higher premium costs, panelists said Oct. 13 at the Medical Care for Children Partnership Foundation’s 2017 State of Children’s Health Breakfast.

“I was extremely discouraged,” said Shelby Gonzales, board member of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, regarding the president’s announcements the previous day.

Trump’s executive orders outlined national policy objectives that would create pathways for insurers to provide minimal coverage and expand the use of short-term health plans, which offer fewer consumer protections, said Gonzales, who delivered her remarks at the Inova Center for Personalized Health in Fairfax.

Many younger and healthier people might be attracted to those short-term health plans, thus taking away business from more comprehensive coverage programs and causing the financial risk pool to deteriorate, Gonzales said.

MCCP Foundation board member Ann Sullivan, the discussion’s moderator, said Trump’s declarations likely would not take effect for a long time.

“I took it more as a political statement,” Sullivan said, adding that both Congress and the president bore some responsibility for the health-care crunch.

Mary Beth Testa, a policy consultant with Richmond-based Voices for Virginia’s Children, told the audience how the non-profit group works to reduce the immediate effects of poverty and ultimately to eliminate that condition.

The group focuses on racial and economic concerns so all children in Virginia have the opportunity to succeed, Testa said.

Childhood trauma is another of the key issues underpinning the organization’s work.

“We believe we’re at a pivotal time in the commonwealth for really addressing childhood trauma and building on the momentum of local work and the efforts of direct-service providers to make some policy changes in this area,” she said.

Virginia has made progress, albeit very slowly, in addressing that issue, she said.

Voices for Virginia’s Children leaders remain concerned about poverty in the state. About 44,000 more Virginia children live in poverty now than during the economic recession nine years ago, Testa said.

About 95 percent of children in the commonwealth are covered by health insurance, but roughly 100,000 still are not enrolled, Testa said.

“For children to succeed in school and in life, they have to be healthy,” she said.

“We desperately want to provide more services early on,” she said. “You really don’t have physical health without mental health.”

Passenger traffic at Northern Virginia’s two main airports was up a combined 3.1 percent in August from a year before, with both facilities on pace to record solid years – and, in one case, potentially a record-breaker.

Washington Dulles saw nearly 2.24 million passengers coming and going during August, up 3.9 percent from a year before, while Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s passenger total of 2.1 million was up 2.2 percent.

Figures were reported Oct. 16 by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

The numbers confirm a comeback at Dulles, which in recent years had slipped behind Reagan National in overall passenger counts.

August’s growth at Dulles was due in part to a 4.5-percent increase in domestic passengers using United, the airport’s dominant carrier, as well as increases in passengers at Southwest, Delta and Frontier.

On the international front, airlines ranging from Air France to Icelandair to Air China posted year-over-year increases, although United scaled back its

international service.

At Reagan National, dominant carrier American – which in August accounted for exactly half of all passengers – saw a very slight uptick in passenger count compared to a year ago, while Delta, Southwest and United all posted larger hikes.

While trans-border service is generally negligible, it did increase 14 percent for the month due to service operated by Air Canada and American.

For the first eight months of the year, Reagan National’s passenger total of 16.1 million was up 2.4 percent from the same period in 2016, suggesting it could be on track to set another new annual record.

At Washington Dulles, which saw its passenger totals peak in the early 2000s, the year-to-date passenger count of 15.3 million was up 5 percent.

At Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, operated by the Maryland state government, the passenger count of 2.43 million for August was up 7.6 percent from a year before. Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier at BWI. Full data can be found at www.mwaa. com.

Public-Safety Notes POLICE LOOKING FOR KNIFE-WIELDING ROBBER: Fairfax County police

are searching for a man who reportedly wielded a knife while stealing items from a store at Fair Lakes Shopping Center on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Loss-prevention staff at the store recognized the suspect from past thefts, police said. Staff observed the suspect concealing clothes and sunglasses in his jeans, then leaving the store.

When a store employee attempted to stop the man, the suspect pulled a knife out of his pocket and pointed it at the worker, police said. The suspect then got into a black Ford Expedition and drove off. He was described as black, in his late 30s and wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Great Falls Elementary School hosts a partial Japanese-immersion program for students.

n BASIS Independent McLean has debuted its new school mascot: a red-tailed hawk.

The design was created by 11th-grader Kelley Wang and fourth-grader Grace Araya, and was chosen from among five finalists by students and staff at the school. Math teachers used the vote data for a lesson on bar graphs with some of the primary-school students.

The new mascot was necessitated by the news that the original mascot was the same as at a sister school.

“The process in renaming our mascot by petition and vote became not just a fun and engaging activity for the students, but we were able to talk about it as an educational opportunity as well, learning about debate, persuasion and the power of democracy,” said Megan Campion, BASIS Independent McLean’s director of student affairs for lower school.

BASIS Independent McLean was founded in 2016. It is part of a network that currently includes 24 public charter schools in Arizona, Texas and the District of Columbia; five independent schools in California, New York and Virginia; and two international schools in China.

years with the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office and then joined the Fairfax County police 23 years ago. He now is based out of the McLean District Station.

Alford’s racing team now is looking for additional sponsorships for next year. The team races its Arena vehicle in winter and the Sportsman Late Model during summers. The vehicles cost a total of about $15,000 per year for fuel, tires and repairs.

Alford and partner Nate Williamson defray some expenses by doing most of their

own maintenance.

The study group’s report expressed the hope that Vienna could join NOVA Parks’ board of directors as a recognized municipal member.

Confidence Still Strong When Housing Is in the Discussion

Existing-home sales have retreated in four of the past five months, but new survey findings from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) indicate it is not because of a lack of confidence from consumers about buying and selling a home, or based on their views about the direction of the economy and their finances.

That’s according to NAR’s third quarter Housing Opportunities and Market Experience (HOME) survey, which found there appears to be a revival from renters that now is a good time to buy a home. After dipping to roughly half of renters last quarter (52 percent), the share who believe now is a good time climbed to 62 percent (60 percent a year ago).

Overall, current homeowners (80 percent), households with higher incomes and those living in the more affordable Midwest and South regions are the most optimistic about buying right now.

Amid the steady gains in home values seen in many parts of the country, the share of homeowners that believe now is a good time to sell is also inching higher. Eighty percent of homeowners think now is a good time to list their home for sale (a new survey high), which is up from last quarter (75 percent) and even more so than a year ago (67 percent).

Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, says it is great news that homebuyer and seller optimism is advancing, but it remains unclear if it will actually translate to more sales.

“The housing market has been in a funk since early spring because of the ongoing scarcity of new and existing homes for sale,” Yun said. “The pace of new home construction has not meaningfully broken out this year, and not enough homeowners at this point have followed through with their belief that now is a good time to sell. As a result, home shoppers have seen limited options, stiff competition and weakening affordability conditions.“ More households this quarter (57 percent) believe the economy is improving compared to the second quarter (54 percent) and a year ago (48 percent). Continuing the complete reversal from a year ago, those living in rural and suburban areas were more optimistic about the economy than respondents residing in urban areas.

The Langley Saxons won the Virginia High School League’s 6A state championship Oct. 9-10 at Magnolia Green Golf Club near Richmond with a record-setting low team score of 5-under 291-280–571 to win by 38 strokes of Kellam. The 36-hole 571 total was the lowest in VHSL state tournament history of any classification level, breaking the 575 score shot by Jamestown in 2010 when it won the AA crown.

The state golf title was Langley’s sixth in school history and third this decade, and made the Saxons three-for-three in postseason tournament championships this fall. Langley first won the National District title, then a region crown, followed by the state to earn a triple-crown in high school golf.

In those three tournaments, the team’s combined score was 5-under par and there was only one individual score in the 80s over six rounds. The rest were in the 60s and 70s, with six rounds of 70 and four rounds in the 60s.

In all, Langley won eight tournaments this fall and was second in two others.

The Madison Warhawks (6-2) and Marshall Statesmen (6-1) were local winners Oct. 13 in high school football games, as each won big in non-district action on their home fields.

FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Madison downed the winless Chantilly Chargers, 49-7. Marshall routed the George Mason Mustangs, 49-8, in a neighborhood showdown of schools on Route 7 located about a mile apart.

For Madison in its victory, Brandon Walker ran for 98 yards and a touchdown, Casey Koshuta had 55 yards rushing and two TDs, Michael Thiel ran

for 54 yards and Casey Patrick for 47.

Through the air, Patrick Berry was 4 of 8 for 115 yards, including a 42-yard scoring pass to John Finney. Johnny Hecht had two catches and threw a twopoint conversion pass. Thomas MacCall had a catch for 59 yards.

Bobby Williams and Pepe Conforti scored on short touchdown runs, and Ethan Lee booted multiple extra points.

With its win, Marshall bettered its win total from last season, when the Statesmen finished 5-6.

Against George Mason, Marshall quarterback Andrew Margiotta ran for three touchdowns, and Brandon Gonzales, LaRon Allen, Kyle Burke and Aidan Platter all scored on runs. Margiotta had 237 yards rushing and Gonzales 49.

As a team, Marshall amassed 348 yards on the ground. n In other Oct. 13 games involving local teams, the host Oakton Cougars (1-6, 0-2) lost to the undefeated Westfield Bulldogs, 34-14, and the winless Langley Saxons (0-7, 0-2) fell to the visiting Yorktown Patriots, 31-20.

Oakton trailed 28-0 after three quarters. Oakton quarterback Paul Campo threw two fourth-quarter TD passes.

In Langley’s loss, quarterback Jimmy Keys ran for 116 yards and Tre Vasiliadis ran for 66 and two touchdowns. Bennett Norris had a short scoring run. n On Oct. 14, the McLean Highlanders (0-7, 0-2) lost to the host Herndon Hornets, 23-12, with Carter Govan having a big game catching the ball.

Unfortunately, not enough of those competitions are played throughout the Sun Gazette’s coverage areas in Fairfax County, despite all kinds of possible matchups in so many different sports. Maybe some type of mini-tournaments, even during the preseason or over spring or holiday breaks, could be arranged.

An example would be an all-Vienna-and-Oakton baseball or girls softball event including teams from Flint Hill, Madison, Marshall and Oakton high schools. The same could be held in many other sports, like volleyball, lacrosse, swim and dive, cross country, field hockey and all of the specific sports played in the same seasons.

Similar competitions could be played in the Great Falls and McLean communities, involving teams from Langley, McLean, Madeira and Potomac School.

Two-day round-robin girls and boys basketball tournaments in either of those jurisdictions likely would sell out a gymnasium. Reason being: most of those hoop teams are top-notch and regularly compete for championships each winter.

Cross country meets could be held at Nottoway Park in Vienna and Lewinsville Park in McLean, and swim and dive events at Oak Marr or Spring Hill RECenters.

The events wouldn’t have to be held every single season, but at least once in a while, maybe every two or three years.

What’s unique about these high school sports communities is that none of the teams, whether public or private school, are so overwhelming superior to the others that events couldn’t be competitive.

Some of the teams already meet in regular-season action. But there can never be enough competition when it involves neighborhood rivals.

A big conference showdown with first place potentially on the line between neighborhood riFOOTBALL vals drew closer Oct. 14 thanks to the Potomac School Panthers’ 14-7 home victory over the Maret Frogs.

With the win, their fourth in a row, the Panthers improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference in high school football action.

While Potomac School was winning its game in McLean, a few miles away in Oakton on Oct. 14, the undefeated Flint Hill Huskies (6-0, 1-0) blanked the Bishop Ireton Cardinals, 42-0, in nonleague action for their second shutout in three games.

If Flint Hill defeats host St. James (6-1, 1-1) in MAC action on Oct. 21, the Huskies and Panthers each will be 2-0 in the conference when they meet Oct. 28 at Flint Hill. Potomac School plays a non-conference game against Paul VI Catholic on Oct. 20.

“It feels good to be 4-2 and have our defense play like it did [against Maret],”

Potomac School coach Blake Henry said. “Our defense played a great game.

We have been much better at the point of attack, so teams have had a hard time running against us.”

The seven points were the fewest Potomac School has allowed in a game this season. Of the 192 total yards the Panthers allowed Maret, 54 came on a touchdown run. Maret had just seven first downs.

“What’s special about this team is we have so much depth. We have eight players who can all shoot good scores,” Chinn said.

Said Berg: “Kelly is very wise beyond his years, obviously has talent, keeps his composure, and is not intimidated.”

Langley sophomore Nikita Gubenko shot 74-70–144 and tied for fifth individually, senior Eli Thrasher 72-73–145 and was eighth, senior Matthew Feinstein tied for 16th (78-71–149) and sophomore Brian Feinstein (75-77–152) and senior John Schindler (78-74–152) tied for 20th.

“After we won states last year we knew we had five or six players returning and that Chinn was joining our team,” said Thrasher, the individual region champion. “We wanted to win states again and have the Tiger Woods’ effect: show up and not give anyone a chance to win. We knew if we played well nobody could beat us because we had so much depth.”

That depth showed because all six of Langley’s top players at one point carded the lowest score in various tournaments.

“Our order doesn’t ever matter, because none of us ever wanted to have the highest score, and if we did, we get kidded by the other players about that,” said Thrasher, who finished his high school career by making a flop-shot chip-in eagle using a 60-degree wedge on the 18th hole of his second round. “It

bounced once and rolled in. I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said.

YOUNG RACER HAS STRONG SEASON:

At 14 years old, Langley High School freshman Daniel Silvestri doesn’t yet have his driver’s license, but he’s been racing cars for eight years.

He currently has moved up and races on the Legends race car circuit.

Several current NASCAR drivers raced the speedy Legends cars at some point.

“Talk to anyone in racing and they will tell you the Legends car is by far one of the most difficult cars to master,” Silvestri said. “My dad and I had some simple goals for our first year: Get used to the increased speed, get comfortable and focus on finishing the race strong.”

Silvestri opened the Legend season at the INEX Winter Nationals in Tampa.

He surprised many by both qualifying and finishing in the top five against many drivers with much more experience. In the end, he finished third, earning a Gator Trophy.

“That Florida event increased my confidence that I could compete in this series,” Silvestri said.

His 2017 season ended Sept. 30 at Shenandoah Speedway to conclude the year of racing for the driver. Nationally, Silvestri is ranked Top 10 in his division with higher goals.

Longtime Langley High School golf coach Al Berg expected his team to be strong again this season, as is the case most years.

In the end, after the team posted impressive individual and team scores the likes that GOLF maybe have never been seen in one season by a single team on the high school golf circuit in Virginia to win district, region and state team championships, as well as five other tournaments in 2017, Berg had an explanation for the Saxons’ vast success.

“We have always had talent at Langley, but this season there was more than ever,” said Berg, who has coached the team for 21 years and to four state titles.

“This is the most talent I’ve had from players one through eight. To shoot under par like they did in the region and state tournaments is extraordinary.”

Langley also had the individual champion in the region and state tournaments, as well as the runner-up in the

district. All three were different players, further defining the team’s depth.

Berg said the intense competition among the players to be on Langley’s six-player tournament teams made the team and scoring even better.

“They didn’t want to be out of that top six,” Berg said. “Then, once in tournaments, none wanted to be that player with the highest score and finish sixth.”

Langley won the state and region titles with tournament-record low scores, as well as record margins of victories in the tournaments.

“Really, with the talent we had, anything less than winning a state title this season would have been a disappointment,” Berg said. “They were that good.

We knew it could be a special season.”

Some of the Langley players who didn’t play in tournaments were good enough to be starters and front-line players on other teams, according to Berg.

The high school golf season ends next week with the 36-hole girls state open championship, which will be held in Richmond. Qualifying is this week.

A Soft Month for Fairfax, N.Va. Real Estate Market

A relatively anemic summer season in the local real-estate market continued into September, as sales across Fairfax County were down. While the single-family segment of the market saw higher average sales prices, the other two legs of the market posted declines.

Home sales across Fairfax County totaled 1,156 last month, down 4.8 percent from the 1,214 transactions a year before, according to figures released Oct. 10 by RealEstate Business Intelligence, based on data from Bright MLS. The average sales price of all homes that sold countywide for the month was

• The average sales price of attached homes, such as townhouses and rowhouses, was $368,406, down 1.8 percent.

• The average sales price of condominiums was $271,430, down 4.7 percent.

A total of 55 properties went to closing for $1 million or more.

Add up the sales and prices, and the total sales volume for the month of $613.2 million was down 4.4 percent from a year before.

Homes that sold during the month spent an average of 43 days on the market between listing and ratified sales contract, a brisker pace than the 51 days required a year before. Homes garnered 97.6 percent of listing price, up from 97.2 percent.

Conventional mortgages represented the method of transacting sales in 731 cases, followed by VA-backed loans (140) and cash (129).

Inventory, or the lack thereof, continues to be vex prospective purchasers, with the 3,313 properties on the market at the end of the month down 8.6 percent from a year before.

N.Va. Real Estate Market Sees Flat September: A dip in Northern Virginia home sales, offset by an increase in average prices, led to a generally flat September, according to new year-over-year figures.

Total sales volume for the month stood at $896.5 million, down a half-percent from the $892 million in September 2016, according to new figures reported by the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors (NVAR), based on data from Bright MLS. (“Northern Virginia” in this case includes the counties of Arlington and Fairfax and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church.)

For the month, a total of 1,620 homes went to closing, down from 1,675 a year before. Year-over-year sales were up in Arlington and Falls Church, down in Fairfax County and the cities of Alexandria and Fairfax.

Regionally, the market posted an increase in the average sales price, which rose 3.9 percent to $553,440. Average prices were higher in all three segments of the market, rising 4.9 percent to $758,032 for single-family homes; 3.2 percent to

And although the local market is following its historic norms, transitioning into the slower six months of every sales period, that could be good news for prospective purchases – in specific cases.

“While spring months are our market’s busiest, the slight winding down in the fall market could mean that serious buyers have less competition for properties,” said Bob Adamson, chairman of the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors.

Gary Lange, a member of the NVAR board of directors and a Realtor with Weichert in Vienna, said sellers and buyers each have their own set of expectations.

Current buyers, Lange said, do not want homes that require extensive work unless they are getting a bargain. On the other side of the equation, “inventory is relatively stable, but not enough to change sellers’ demands for top dollar or close to top dollar.”

And yet not every seller is willing to stick it out in a game of chicken with prospective buyers.

As sellers become antsy to get their homes sold, “they are making price adjustments, and that is helping to move some inventory,” Lange said.

Under the proposal, the cost for an annual pass of $30 (valid at both parks) will not change.
