When practice for the 2017 high school football season began back in August, the Flint Hill Huskies set a goal of finishing undefeated and winning a state championship. On Nov. 18 on their home field, the top-seed Huskies did just that, defeating the third-seed Collegiate Cougars from Richmond, 33-21, in the state championship game of the Division I private-school state tournament. Flint Hill rallied from a 7-0 first-quarter deficit and overcame a number of first-half mistakes to finish 11-0 and win its first state champion- Flint Hill defensive back Jamarian Hawkins, top, breaks up a pass intended for Collegiate’s K.J. VDOT Starts Mobilizing in Effort to Stay Ahead of Mother Nature’s Wrath The Virginia Department of Transportation is prepping to deploy 4,500 pieces of equipment (some its own, but the vast majority of them contracted out) to handle winter weather across Northern Virginia in 2017-18. The state agency will have 120,000 tons of salt, 250,000 gallons of brine and 25,000 tons of sand on hand to address snow and ice on 13,585 lane-miles across Northern Virginia, ranging from interstate highways to local subdivisions. According to VDOT officials, the plan for winter 2017-18 is to have crews pretreat critical roads, then begin plowing after 2 inches of snow has fallen. Plowing is prioritized starting with interstates

and high-volume roads, then subdivision main roads, then remaining streets and cul-de-sacs. The goal is to have at least one passable lane in neighborhoods within 24 hours when up to 4 inches of snow has fallen and within 48 hours when 4 to 6 inches of snow has fallen. (More than 6 inches and all bets are off, as VDOT says its clearance goal is to have a passable lane in subdivisions sometime “more than 72 hours.”) VDOT is responsible for handling snow-removal on streets in all Northern Virginia counties except Arlington (which shares responsibility depending on type of road).

Current Rules in Code Date Back to Early ‘70s BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Vienna already has a healthy assortment of restaurants, but even more could open under code amendments unanimously adopted Nov. 13 by the Vienna Town Council. The new rules, which relax restrictions imposed 46 years ago, are necessary accommodations to the modern world, Town Council members said. “We need to look at what the town was then and what the town is now,” said Council member Carey Sienicki. “Where we are now is a very different town . . . As people have changed over time, so does our code need to change.” The code amendments, which still must be adopted formally, harken back to 1956, when the town allowed restaurants by-right in any commercial district. Matters changed in 1971 when the Town Council, seeking to encourage establishment of high-quality restaurants, tightened up the code language and prohibited drive-in eateries. The Council that year required that restaurants in freestanding buildings have at least 125 seats and 31 parking spaces. Code language then also allowed restaurants in office buildings primarily used for Continued on Page 2
