Park Authority, Great Falls Residents at Odds Debate Centers on the Long-Term Health Implications of Artificial-Turf Surfaces BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Fairfax County Park Authority officials have postponed their decision adding synthetic turf to an athletic field at Nike Park in Great Falls following some residents’ objection to the potential use of

crumb rubber for the field’s surface. The Park Authority plans to add synthetic turf at the site’s Field No. 7, which also serves as a memorial to late Great Falls resident Vanessa Pean, who died in a 2005 automobile crash. The Great Falls Citizens Association’s Executive Board on June 28 passed a res-

olution expressing concerns about crumbrubber fields’ health and safety effects on children and their impacts on storm water, a critical concern in Great Falls where many residents rely on wells for water. After push-back from the local community in 2012, the Park Authority chose to cover Field No. 4 at the site with an

alternative surface called TPE, which is made from ground-up bottles, and according to proponents, offers fewer health drawbacks that crumb rubber, which is made from pulverized auto tires. GFCA leaders urged county officials Continued on Page 18
