Community Center’s Reopening Is a Big Hit Trials and Tribulations That Plagued Vienna Project Are Relegated to the Past BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Judging from the reaction of hundreds of people who eagerly poured into the newly renovated Vienna Community Center on Sept. 23, the two-year-long closure during construction was worth the wait. The heavily attended dedication ceremony and open house showed how crucial the facility is to the town, said Vienna Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Herman. “The Vienna Community Center will continue to be the focal point of this community for generations to come,” she said. The renovations involved gutting and upgrading the existing facility, while adding about 15,000 square feet of new space. A new full-sized gymnasium with a high-school regulation basketball court will, when partitioned, allow two youth games to occur simultaneously. The court also is available for use for volleyball court or three pickleball matches, said Herman, adding that a single-lane running track also circles the gym floor. “It’s really nice, the way they’ve updated it,” said Rodney Ward of Bowie, Md., who brought his 3-year-old daughter, Caliah, to check out the new gym. “There are more opportunities for people to come and do things now,” added Ward, who has been holding basketball camps at the facility since 1993.
