Bennett, who noted her campaign raised $1.2 million in slightly more than six months, said Comstock is “out of touch” with the 10th District’s values.

“Her voting record is anti-woman, anti-environment, anti-immigration and anti-gun-safety,” she said. “I find her position on equal pay for women hard to comprehend. It’s not just a fairness issue.

It’s an economic issue.”

The GOP has held the 10th District for nearly 36 years. U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R10th) beat incumbent Joseph Fisher (D) in 1980 and held the seat until retiring in

Vienna Council Grudgingly OKs Trailer Use at Elementary Staff Writer

Vienna Town Council members unanimously agreed Aug. 22 to allow Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to continue using three classroom trailers at Louise Archer Elementary School, but indicated their patience is running thin with what school officials had promised was a temporary solution.

The school, which is located on 8.1 acres at 324 Nutley St., N.W., is scheduled to receive renovation funding in 2021 and money for an addition in 2025. School officials would remove the trailers once that work was completed.

That timeline was too slow for Council member Carey Sienicki, whose now-college-age children once attended classes in Louise Archer’s aging trailers.

“In 2005, the [multi-classroom] modular unit got built,” she said. “The promise then was the trailers would go away . . .

They’re not a wonderful environment for children to be educated in.”

Some Council members worried other schools might leapfrog ahead of Louise Archer in the renovations queue and further delay that facility’s needed upgrades.

“Louise Archer is No. 41 on the list,” noted Council member Douglas Noble.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t slip backward.”

Noble exhorted school officials to improve the accuracy of their enrollment predictions.

When his children attended Freedom Hill Elementary, the school still had six trailers after its renovation and then had to add a modular unit, he said.

John McGranahan Jr., an attorney representing the school system, said when school officials appear before the Council again in 2018 to ask for another two-year extension for Louise Archer’s trailers, they will have a better sense of when the school’s renovations will be coming.

The Town Council in December 2012 approved the continued use of two trailers for two years; that agreement expired in December 2014. Council members in August 2011 permitted the use of a third trailer at the site for a three-year period and that agreement ran out in August 2014.

“We need to make sure children in Vienna actually get good places to learn,” Sienicki said. “It’s not an ideal situation.

The town has always looked at these [trailers] as interim situations. As a county resident, I don’t feel it’s meeting the needs of our community.”

Sienicki liked the school’s modular unit, but Sunny Sarna, an FCPS engineer, said adding another such unit in place of the trailers likely would require the sacrifice of an athletic field.

Vienna Mayor Laurie DiRocco said Louise Archer’s trailers had been there too long to be considered an “interim” solution. Generations of students at the school have taken classes in those trailers, she said.

enna Town Council OKs Only Carpeting for Elevator: The Vienna Town Council voted 7-0 Aug. 22 to defer the proposed purchase of new flooring materials in Town Hall’s first- and second-floor lobbies and put new carpeting inside the building’s elevator instead.

Department of Planning and Zoning staff had proposed spending $48,744 to have CCA Government Floors & Interiors install new flooring tiles at Town Hall.

The contract’s price included a 5-percent contingency allowance.

Town staff chose slate tiling in a “Mongolian Desert-Versailles Pattern,”

which would have been installed over the three-day weekends of Labor Day and Columbus Day. Noting the town was “hemorrhaging” money with its Vienna Community Center renovations, Council member Howard Springsteen recommended only heavyduty carpeting be installed in Town Hall’s elevator.

“If that’s my house, I would not spend the money on this,” he said of the tile request, adding, “I can’t go around town justifying this.”

Springsteen said if fellow Council members approved the tile proposal, they

should be prepared to write personal checks for new cost overruns at the community center.

Acting Finance Director Marion Serfass said the amount proposed for the tile project was left over from earlier efforts to revamp Town Hall’s heating-cooling-andventilation system.

“In my opinion, there’s enough money left for this project,” she said.

Despite that recommendation, Town Council members agreed to Springsteen’s motion to defer the tile project and instead spend no more than $1,500 on new carpeting for the elevator.

FCPS Pass Rates on SOLs Stay Steady or Increase School Officials Acknowledge Achievement Gaps Persist Across Many Areas SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Average pass rates for Fairfax County Public Schools students increased in two subject areas and stayed steady in four others, according to new Standards of Learning figures reported by the state government.

Between 80 and 90 percent of Fairfax students passed various state-mandated Standards of Learning exams (SOLs) last spring, rates higher than statewide averages but still showing disparity among different racial and ethnic groups, Fairfax officials said.

The Virginia Department of Education released both statewide and schoolsystem SOL results on Aug. 16. Overall pass rates for Fairfax students were 90 percent in history, 86 percent in writing and in science, 85 percent in reading and 83 percent in math. Pass rates were up two points in science and one point in math, flat on the other exams.

“Gaps continue to exist between the achievement of black and Hispanic students and that of white and Asian students,” county school officials said in a statement accompanying the results. The school system “is committed to eliminating these achievement gaps and at the

same time reaching, challenging and preparing every student for success in school and life,” school officials said.

Commonwealth-wide, 80 percent of students achieved proficient or advanced scores in reading, and the same percentage passed tests in mathematics, compared with 79 percent in both subjects in 2014-15. Eighty-three percent passed SOL tests in science, compared with 82 percent previously.

“A one-point improvement in mathematics means that approximately 11,500 more students met or exceeded the benchmark for proficiency for their grade or course,” Superintendent of Public Instruc-

tion Steven Staples said in a statement accompanying the results. “In reading, a one-point increase equals approximately 8,000 students, and in science, more than 6,000.”

In history and social-science exams, the statewide pass rate of 86 percent was unchanged from a year before.

Sara Harper Took Career Turn from Accounting: ‘The Best Decision I Ever Made’ BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Sara Harper studied marketing and accounting at the University of Kentucky, but the experience of working in an afterschool program during college left a deep impression.

While working as an accountant, she realized she missed the children and decided to become an educator.

“It was the best decision I ever made,” she said. “I just kept spending my parents’ money on college.”

Her experience as a mother, teacher and administrator give her a broad understanding that will help her as Great Falls Elementary School’s principal, she said.

“I bring a huge variety of perspectives to the table and try to look at all sides of the coin,” said Harper, who took over the post in January. “Parental and community involvement is crucial to a school’s success. It leads to increased student achievement and a positive school culture for students and staff.”

Harper hopes to focus on service learning at the school, which encourages students to help others in the community.

Great Falls Elementary also will begin a “positivity project” this coming school year with the goal of “making positive

choices all the time to lift each other up and build a caring culture,” she said.

Harper calls the school a “special little place” with excellent teachers, active community involvement and a “delightful” student body.

“What manners!” she exclaimed about her pupils. “It’s been etched into them that education is important. They come to school happy and ready to learn.”

Originally from Greenwood, Ind., Harper earned bachelor’s degrees in marketing and accounting from the University of Kentucky in 2000 and three years later earned her elementary-education teaching certification from the same college. Harper in 2005 obtained a master’s degree in instructional technology from Columbia University and in 2011 received a master’s in education leadership from George Mason University.

Harper began her Fairfax County Public Schools career in 2003 as a third-grade teacher at Louise Archer Elementary School in Vienna. She began the school’s intervention program to aid struggling students.

“We basically filled in the gaps so they could get on par with other students,” she said.

From 2009 to 2012, she served as an Advanced Academic resource teacher at

Sarah Harper, who in January became the new principal at Great Falls Elementary School, said she is impressed by the student body’s manners and enthusiasm for learning.

Michelle Makrigiorgos, principal at Louise Archer Elementary, said Harper was a “wonderful, dedicated teacher” at Louise Archer who built positive relationships with students, staff and community.

“Sara was a leader and a learner during her time with us,” Makrigiorgos said.

“She continued to grow professionally and was constantly looking for new challenges. She will be a wonderful addition to Great Falls and I expect she will positively impact her new school.”

Harper met her husband at the University of Kentucky and they have been together for 20 years. They live in Vienna and have two daughters and a son.

In her off hours, Harper enjoys reading and spending time with her family and their dog, a “sheep-a-doodle” they named Blue in honor of the University of Kentucky. But she’s aching to start working with her pupils again.

“I can’t wait for laughter to fill the halls,” she said. “It’s quiet here now. I can’t wait for the beginning of the school year. It doesn’t feel right without the students.”

McLean Author’s Novel Honors Memory of Late Son BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

David Daniel’s life changed in an instant July 31, 2004, when his 7-year-old son, David, was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Luray, Va. Daniel on Aug. 9 published his first novel, “A Life Twice Given,” to give his late son the life he couldn’t have in reality.

The accident “is seared into my memory,” said Daniel, a McLean resident. “It often occurs to me with the same level of emotional intensity. The book is about adversity and finding one’s inner strength.

I hope it will be an inspiration to people in seemingly unsolvable situations.”

The novel has similarities with Daniel’s real life. Protagonists Joseph and Rachel have three children, one of whom, Joey, dies in an accident similar to the one that killed the author’s son.

As with her fictional counterpart, Daniel’s wife, Lisa Lubick-Daniel, suffered broken neck vertebrae in the accident and underwent months of grueling recovery.

“My wife had a heroic struggle to restore her mobility,” the author said. “She worked extraordinarily hard in physical therapy and to restore our joy of life at home.”

Joseph vows he would rather trade his life so his son could live instead. He and

his wife obtain and carefully freeze a piece of their late son’s ear, then work with Jewish mohel (one who performs ritual circumcisions) in Prague to have Joey’s DNA cloned and have Rachel give birth to a new baby.

The process succeeds and a son, whom the couple also names Joey, joins the family.

“The book reflects a universal want to find a way to undo matters that can’t normally be fixed,” Daniel said. “It’s a reflection of my wife’s and my yearning.”

The couple in real life did not pursue cloning because of its moral quandaries and likely consequences for a cloned baby, such as premature aging.

Like the author, some of the characters are psychiatrists and readers get a glimpse of how those medical professionals draw out patients’ innermost conflicts.

The protagonists also visit places toured by the author, who provides vivid descriptions of exotic locales such as Prague, Ethiopia, Honduras and the Wyoming wilderness.

Joey’s romantic interest, Madeline, is an amalgamation of women the author has known.

“Madeline was a creation of what I would hope for my son, someone who would make for a happy, stimulating, loving, mutually supportive mate,” he said.

The plot also contains plenty of action, from romantic encounters and espionage

to terrifying wilderness experiences, war and hints of the occult.

“Judaism is a bit vague on the afterlife,” Daniel said. “There’s a notion that you make life as good as you can for yourself and others on Earth.”

Daniel grew up in Jackson, Miss. He loved hunting as a boy and takes his children shooting in Mississippi as often as possible.

He underwent medical and post-graduate training in psychiatry at Vanderbilt Medical School and worked some of his intensive residency experiences into the novel.

Vanderbilt provided an outstanding education that strongly emphasized ethics and positive patient outcomes, he said.

Daniel previously published articles in medical publications, but found fiction liberating.

“You can rely on your imagination and create interesting situations,” he said.

Steven Simon Marks, a childhood friend of Daniel’s who still lives in Mississippi, spoke with the author the day after the accident that killed his son.

“Since he could not, in this world, trade his life for his son’s, he chose to do so in fiction, and in a way that weaves a meaningful and thought-provoking story,” Marks said. “I can only imagine that writing this story must have been painfully and beautifully cathartic for David.”

Daniel’s wife, Lisa, came to a similar conclusion.

“I think it was an amazing endeavor,” she said of the novel. “He was able to channel his feelings and his rage into something positive. It’s a wonderful thing.

I think it is incredible he was able to do this and do it successfully.”

Proceeds from the book will benefit the David Gordon Louis Daniel Foundation, which the Daniels set up in honor of their late son.

Our View: Comstock, Bennett Have a Way to Go

We are about to say “bye-bye” (RIP, John McLaughlin) to the summer political silly season, flipping the calendar and beginning a serious two-month sprint to Election Day. The most hotly contested race across Northern Virginia will be in the 10th Congressional District, where freshman Republican Barbara Comstock is angling to hold on against Democrat LuAnn Bennett.

We’ve yet to be overly impressed with either campaign.

Bennett, who was recruited by Democrats but has little name recognition in the district, has been working overtime to tie Comstock to Donald Trump – a candidate noticeably unpopular in the district.

Comstock’s political leanings open her up to several lines of attack, but suggesting she is politically enamored of, or aligned with, the Republican presidential candidate is not among them.

She clearly is not an admirer, and the Bennett campaign’s (over)reliance on the Trump issue suggests the Democratic con-

tender doesn’t have much in the way of a positive message that is likely to resonate with the informed voters of the 10th. So far, most of what we’re hearing from Bennett is boilerplate Democratic pablum.

As for Comstock, while we supported her against Democrat John Foust in 2014, our backing is not boundless. We are displeased that Comstock, like Frank Wolf before her, is disinclined to engage her opponents in a series of public debates, limiting such joint appearances to the bare minimum.

As for her performance in office, while we generally approve, we also note that Comstock is trying to have it both ways: Act like a common-sense moderate on issues of local importance (including that of the federal workforce) while simultaneously attempting not to alienate the various warring Republican factions on Capitol Hill. Thus her relative silence on Trump.

With a little over two months to go, neither incumbent Comstock nor challenger Bennett has sealed the deal.

There is a theory among some historians that it was high concentrations of lead in the daily lives of Romans, and the cognitive impairment it caused more than a millennium and a half ago, that helped bring that mighty empire to its knees, ushering in a dark period in civilization’s history.

The lead-poisoning theory is not a universally held view, but it does point up the need for vigilance in dealing with the issue, even in the modern day.

The water crisis in Flint, Mich., that has been in the headlines for months is prompting local officials across Northern Virginia to test for problems here. From Arlington to Manassas, some school water fountains have been found to contain lead

levels above the 20-parts-per-billion threshold that causes alarm among public-health officials.

Because high concentrations of lead in water are of particular concern to children and pregnant women, the focus on schools is indeed needed. But everyone should heed warnings and take common-sense steps to identify any risks and, if they appear, to rectify them.

But remember: While lead in drinking water has been in the news, the Virginia Department of Health notes that it’s leadbased paint (prevalent up through the 1970s) that can cause an even bigger risk to overall health. Don’t discount that problem when putting a focus on drinking water.

A Meals Tax Would Augment Library Resources

Editor: As a long-time county resident, volunteer and Friend of my local branch of the Fairfax County Library, I strongly support the meals-tax referendum that will appear on the ballot in November.

Countywide budget restraints since 2009 have had a serious impact on our library system, from the collection and development of materials to staffing and hours of operation. Libraries of-

fer so many valuable services to our community, including, but not limited to, print and electronic sources, English-language instruction, technology education and support, pre-school- and school-age children’s-literacy programs, computer access, adult research assistance and more.

We know that other local jurisdictions have successfully increased their local revenues with meals taxes, so why

not expand the practice throughout the county? It seems like a fair way to help pay for the valuable services that my Fairfax County neighbors enjoy and, indeed, have grown to expect while perhaps alleviating future increases in everrising property taxes.

I, for one, will vote “Yes” for the meals tax in November.

Editor: I disagree with the Aug. 18 letter to the editor from Linda Burchfiel, which furnishes unsubstantiated excuses for Metro’s disastrous track record (pun intended).

If you believe in capitalism, which by the way is our nation’s economic system that has created much wealth – second to none – then you know the private sector is more efficient than anything the government runs. So, may I offer a suggestion to help Metro turn a profit, or at least break even?

Capital-asset utilization is the key

to generating revenue; just ask the airline industry. Metro is shut down from midnight until early morning weekdays, and on weekends it runs a very modified schedule, yielding very expensive underutilized infrastructure.

How about running mini-freight on Metro on nights and weekends?

There would need to be some modification to the system to move freight, but I am sure some bright engineers could come up with a solution. Try those private-sector freight movers like Norfolk Southern, CSX, Fedex and UPS, or even technology innovators like Google.

You could also institute a surcharge for road freight in and out of the city during busy hours to encourage Metro mini-freight usage.

A couple of significant benefits would be reducing the truck traffic and pollution in the District. I think even Ms. Burchfiel at the Sierra Club would go for that.

Another idea is to reduce the size of the federal government and permit the private sector to perform the necessary functions elsewhere.

Airport Officials Aim to Cut Costs for Airlines Using Dulles BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) officials are taking steps to reduce airline costs at Washington Dulles International Airport, and are hoping for a future financial boost from Metro’s Silver Line.

Airlines – and hence their passengers – pay higher fees at Dulles than at Reagan National or Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall airports because operating costs at Dulles include debt service for a slew of recent capital improvements.

As part of their lease agreements with MWAA, airlines cover their share of operating expenses at Dulles and Reagan National airports.

Airlines divide those expenses by the number of people boarding their airplanes to come up with a “cost per enplanement” figure.

While existing debt at National mostly has been paid off, that airport’s expenses will increase when MWAA builds a new concourse there and relocates some of the facility’s security functions, said MWAA spokesman Christopher Paolino.

MWAA president and CEO Jack Potter outlined challenges facing Dulles during a springtime presentation. The airport has made $5 billion in capital investments and paying them off has resulted in one of the highest cost-per-enplanement rates in the country, officials said.

Dulles, which opened in 1962, has seen many capital improvements in recent years, including the addition of a second control tower, parking structures, an underground people-mover system, a new runway and a new security pavilion.

MWAA officials said Dulles’ cost per enplanement, which peaked at just over $25 per passenger in 2013, has begun descending from its previous trajectory and now is in the low $20s per passenger, officials said.

“This number goes down as the airport is able to generate funding from non-airlines sources like parking, concessions or grants from the commonwealth,” Paolino said.

MWAA officials also saved more than $200 million by refinancing $2.4 billion worth of debt since 2010 and hope to refinance another $1.9 billion of debt by 2020.

They also plan to hold discretionary spending steady, consolidate redundant networks and operations, re-bid some service contracts and maximize informationtechnology efficiencies.

MWAA leaders also hope to increase enplanements (i.e., boardings) at Dulles from 10.7 million in 2015 to 11.8 million by 2020.

Airlines operating larger, wide-body airplanes pay more for individual landing fees at Dulles than at Reagan National, as those costs are based on aircraft weight.

Dulles handles more huge airplanes such as the Boeing 747 and 777 and Airbus A380, A340 and A330 – all of which are heavier than the Boeing 757, the largest plane allowed at Reagan National.

Dulles’ market share has declined in the last five years compared with Reagan National, which is run by MWAA, and BWI, which is operated by the Maryland state government.

Reagan National has gained the most market share, handling 27 percent more passengers between 2010 and 2015, while BWI’s passenger totals rose 9 percent during the same period. By contrast, Dulles’ market share fell 8 percent.

During a July 21 ceremony at Dulles celebrating Virginia’s $50 million contribution to reduce airline costs at the airport, Gov. McAuliffe said some of Reagan National’s success has occurred because Congress continues to expand the airport’s perimeter rule, which determines the maximum distance of flights to and from the facility.

The extension of Metro’s Silver Line from Reston to Dulles and farther into Loudoun County likely will result in 6 to 7 percent more Dulles passenger traffic initially, then increase over time as airport users become knowledgeable about and comfortable with the new transit option, a Dulles official said at the July 21 event.

Construction of the extension, which is the second phase of the 23-mile-long Silver Line project, began in 2015 and will take about five years. Project officials have not finalized a completion date for the second phase.

About 65.5 million square feet of new commercial space and 54,050 new residential units will be built along the Dulles Corridor, with more than half those totals occurring in Tysons, MWAA officials said.

Dulles packs a strong economic punch in Northern Virginia, with 144,515 jobs directly related to the airport, plus another 103,191 indirect or induced positions.

The facility produces about $5 billion in direct labor income and an equal amount from induced or indirect sources, officials said.

Dulles passengers each year spend about $8 billion in the region, contributing $1.2 billion in state and local taxes.

Passengers each year spend about $2.9 billion on lodging, $1.9 billion on rental cars, $1 billion on retail, $964.1 million on food, $706.7 million on entertainment and $553.8 million on taxi service, they said.

N.Va. Home Sales, Prices Post Declines in July Home sales across Northern Virginia were down in July from a year before, while the average sales price posted a slight decline, according to new figures.

A total of 2,209 properties went to closing last month in the region, according to figures reported Aug. 10 by RealEstate Business Intelligence, an arm of the local multiple-listing service.

That’s down 4.9 percent from the 2,322 transactions in July 2015, representing sales in Arlington and Fairfax counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church.

The average sales price of all proper-

ties that closed during the month was $565,567, down 0.2 percent from $566,558 – a decline due, in part, to a smaller number of single-family homes in the overall mix.

In fact, two of the three segments of the market posted an increase in average prices: the single-family market was up 0.8 percent to $744,853 while the condominium market rose 4.9 percent to $332,957. The market for attached homes, such as townhouses, dipped 0.3 percent to $409,508.

The median sales price of all homes that sold was up 2 percent to $510,000.

The median is the point at which half of homes sell for more, half for less.

A total of 164 homes sold for $1 million or more, and the total sales volume for the month was $1.25 billion, down 5 percent from a year before.

Homes that sold in July spent an average of 41 days between listing and ratified contract, up from 40 days a year before, and garnered 97.4 percent of listing price, down a tick from 97.5 percent.

Inventory is tighter than it was last summer, with the 4,991 properties on the market down about 15 percent from the 5,864 of a year ago.

Where is the market headed? Figures look to return to positive territory, with pending sales and homes coming under contract during the month up from the same period in 2015.

The average sales price of $520,691 for the month was down 1.2 percent from $526,939, with declines posted in both the single-family ($627,639) and attached ($419,889) segments of the market. Condominiums were in positive territory, with the average price rising 4.5 percent to $363,359.

A total of 360 properties changed hands from $1 million or more.

Arlington Leads Pack in Per-SquareFoot Cost: A typical 2,500-square-foot home that might go for $397,500 in Stafford County would fetch $472,500 in Prince William County, $715,000 in Loudoun County and an eye-opening $1.13 million in Arlington, at least based on new per-square-foot figures from RealEstate Business Intelligence, an arm of the local multiple-listing service.

Arlington led the pack among Northern Virginia jurisdictions with a median sales price of $453 square foot for sales of existing homes, according to figures reported Aug. 12. Second was the city of Falls Church at $417 per square foot.

(The median home-sales price in Falls Church exceeds that in Arlington, $708,000 to $627,000, in the most recent report, with the difference due mainly to the larger percentage of single-family homes in the city.)

Also on the per-square-foot list: Alexandria at $417, Fairfax County at $359, the city of Fairfax at $286, Loudoun County at $203, Manassas Park at $195, Prince William County at $189, Manassas at $175 and Stafford County at $159.

All jurisdictions posted increases from a year before, ranging from 0.2 percent in Arlington to 10.8 percent in Manassas Park.

Topping the list among local jurisdictions was the District of Columbia at $520 per square foot. Among Maryland jurisdictions, median sales prices were $256 in Montgomery County, $215 in Howard County, $204 in Anne Arundel County and $165 in Prince George’s County.

Fairfax Officials Will Shutter Recycling Facility in Oakton BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Vexed by persistent illegal dumping problems at the Blake Lane Park recycling drop-off center, Fairfax County officials have decided to shutter the facility permanently effective Sept. 15.

“Illegal dumping creates a health hazard, is unsightly, pollutes our waterways and requires extra collection services,” officials said in a media statement. “Despite signage and monitoring, illegal dumping at the site has become a chronic problem, resulting in a high number of resident complaints.”

The county established the drop-off site, located at 10033 Blake Lane in Oakton, in the 1980s before curbside recycling became available to residents. That latter service greatly reduced the need for the Blake Lane site, officials said.

The Sun Gazette reported on the problems in July 2015. Supervisor Linda Smyth (D-Providence) said county officials had set up cameras to monitor illegal dumping, but the equipment was stolen.

“It’s very hard to catch the culprits who are doing these things,” she said at the time.

County officials had tried to combat the problems by dispatching a dump truck from a facility in Newington once

or twice per week to clean up the messes at the Blake Lane Park recycling area.

Each trip cost the county about $100, said Matthew Kaiser, spokesman for the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.

No single event led officials to close the Blake Lane drop-off center, he said.

“Unfortunately, illegal dumping at the site has continued and has actually gotten worse in recent months,” Kaiser said.

“Illegal dumping attracts more dumping, and despite our best efforts to keep the area clean, the site had simply become unmanageable.”

County officials will begin shutting down the site by placing barriers and signs indicating the facility’s impending shutdown. Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program officials will coordinate their efforts with the county’s Park Authority, which operates the site.

Residents who need to recycle items not eligible for curbside pickup should take those articles to the Fairfax County Transfer Station at 4816 West Ox Road in Fairfax.

While that site accepts recyclable materials at no charge, household waste delivered in bags there will cost residents $8 for up to five bags and $12 for six to 10 bags. Residents age 60 and older pay $4 for dropping off two bags.

McLean/Great Falls Notes OPERATING AGREEMENT EXTENDED AT CLAUDE MOORE FARM: The Na-

tional Park Service and Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean have extended their working agreement for another year until officials can negotiate a longer-term arrangement.

The National Park Service in 1972 established 70-acre Turkey Run Farm, now known as Claude Moore Colonial Farm, as a national park and living-history museum under the agency’s Legacy-of-theParks program.

The park, which has been visited by more than 2 million people from around the world, endeavors to portray authentically the everyday life and work of late18th-century colonists in Virginia, just before the start of the American Revolution.

Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm has managed the parks operations since 1981, under an agreement with the National Park Service. That arrangement was set to expire Sept. 30 this year, so the Friends organization and Park Service officials set July 26 to discuss the situation.

The organizations announced Aug. 10 that they had extended the current agreement by one year and now will hammer out a lengthier arrangement that includes a lease option.

“The Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm expresses their appreciation to the NPS for its commitment to the farm

and their organization so they can continue serving tens of thousands of visitors each year, including many schoolchildren from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia whose curricula have come to rely on, and be enriched by, the various programs that the farm offers,” said Alexcy Romero, superintendent of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

tors at Riverbend Park in Great Falls soon will be let in on a piece of history: President James Madison crossed over the Potomac River to that site in August 1814 when British troops burned Washington, D.C. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, along with leaders of the county’s Park Authority board of directors and History Commission, on Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. will unveil a historical marker at the park that commemorates the president’s flight.

Two years into the War of 1812, British forces defeated American troops in Bladensburg, Md., on Aug. 24, 1814. At dusk that evening, a small group of British troops marched into the District of Columbia and burned the White House, U.S. Capitol and some public buildings.

after a tremendous storm hit. A tornado swept through the city and knocked over a building, killing about 36 British troops, said Carole Herrick, chairman of the Fairfax County History Commission.

President Madison and his wife, Dolley, fled to the Virginia countryside along with Secretary of State James Monroe.

All three traveled separately.

Monroe crossed the Potomac at Conn’s Ferry Aug. 25, but intense thunderstorms and the river’s raging waters forced the president to wait until the following day to traverse the Potomac at the same point, Herrick said.

ership Arlington and the Leadership Center for Excellence, which earlier in 2016 won a contract from the county government to operate the volunteer program for the next five years.

For decades, the volunteer program had been run directly by the county government, but it has been in limbo for the past three years as Arlington officials debated whether to retain it in-house or outsource it.

Ultimately, they put the program up for bid to community organizations seeking to run it.

Public-Safety Notes CARD-SKIMMING DEVICE FOUND AT VIENNA SERVICE STATION: A compli-

ance officer with the Virginia Office of Weights and Measures contacted the Vienna Police Department on Aug. 10 at 2:01 p.m. about a skimming device discovered at the Exxon service station at 395 Maple Ave., E. The compliance officer found the device, which illicitly records information from customers’ credit and debit cards, while checking the station’s pumps, police said.

JEWELRY STOLEN FROM VIENNA HOME:A resident living in the 800 block

of Park Street, S.E., told Vienna police that sometime between July 28 and Aug. 4 nearly $1,700 worth of jewelry had been stolen from the home’s jewelry box.

VIENNA POLICE ARREST FAIRFAX MAN FOR TRESPASSING: Vienna police dis-

patched officers to Yeonas Circle, S.W., on Aug. 14 at 1:08 a.m. to investigate a 911 hang-up call. When officers arrived, they could hear two people arguing inside the residence.

Police spoke with the people and determined one of them was refusing to leave the residence at the request of the resident caretaker. Police gave the man several opportunities to leave the residence, but he refused.

Police arrested the 21-year-old Fairfax man on the charge of trespassing and transported him to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

VEHICLES BROKEN INTO, PURSES STOLEN AT GLYNDON PARK: Vienna

police on Aug. 18 investigated two cases in which cars had been broken into and purses stolen at Glyndon Park, 300 Glyndon St., N.E. The first case occurred at 4:33 p.m. when a park patron was informed another that the victim’s vehicle was being broken into. The victim returned to the vehicle and found one of its windows had been smashed and a purse stolen.

Police searched the area, but the suspect fled the scene before the officers arrived.

While investigating that larceny at 5:05 p.m., another park patron approached an officer and stated a window of that person’s vehicle had been smashed and a purse also stolen.

NEW COUNTY POLICE CRUISES SPORTING UPDATED LOOK: For the

first time in more than 20 years and seventh time in the Fairfax County Police Department’s 76-year history, the department’s marked police vehicles are getting a new look.

The decision and design process began in 2011 when officials began search-

ing for a vehicle to replace the discontinued Ford Crown Victoria. Current police cruiser markings were introduced in 1993 and have become a Fairfax County trademark.

Since the redesign project was approved, members of the department’s Resource Management Bureau (RMB) developed and considered several design options and patterns, narrowed the choice down to six possibilities, then conducted presentations throughout the county to share information about the project and solicit feedback.

RMB staff presented their findings to sworn, civilian, volunteer and retired departmental staff, Citizens’ Advisory Committee (CAC) groups and other community groups.

The two most well-liked designs were put up for final discussion within the Advance Design Review Group, a committee comprising patrol officers, RMB staff, department leadership, police retirees and CAC members. They made a selection, hashed out a few final adjustments based on presentation feedback, then approached the department’s current decal vendor to inquire about cost and implementation.

The only additional cost is the purchase and application of new reflective safety chevron decals. These decals, which will be applied across the rear bumper of every marked police cruiser

to enhance visibility and safety.

The first newly dressed cruisers will debut at police stations countywide in September. As new cruisers are procured and distributed among the county’s fleet, the new design will be applied to them.

Existing cruisers and fleet vehicles will not be retrofitted with the new design; only new fleet vehicles will be affixed with the new markings. Residents will see the current design slowly phase out as older vehicles are placed out of service over the next few years.

Patrol cars are an iconic symbol of the police profession and the department’s role in the community, officials said.

“We want our vehicles to project the professionalism and confidence of your emergency responders and increase safety through higher visibility features,” officials said in a statement. “The new exterior design provides a crisp, immediately recognizable image while providing added visibility for both officers and other drivers on the roadway.”

Sales Prices Still Rising in Metro Areas Home prices maintained their robust, upward trajectory in a vast majority of metro areas during the second quarter, causing affordability to slightly decline despite mortgage rates hovering at lows not seen in over three years, according to the latest quarterly report by the National Association of Realtors.

The report also revealed that for the first time ever, a metro area – San Jose, Calif. – had a median single-family home price above $1 million.

The median existing single-family home price increased in 83 percent of measured markets, with 148 out of 178 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) showing gains based on closed sales in the second quarter compared with the same period in 2015.

Twenty-nine areas (16 percent) recorded lower median prices from a year earlier.

There were slightly fewer rising markets in the second quarter compared to the first three months of this year, when price gains were recorded in 87 percent of metro areas.

Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, says a faster pace of home sales amidst languishing inventory levels pushed home prices higher in most metro areas during the second quarter.

“Steadily improving local job markets and mortgage rates teetering close to all-time lows brought buyers out in force in many large and middle-tier cities,” he said.

“However,” Yun said, “with homebuilding activity still failing to keep up with demand and not enough current homeowners putting their homes up for sale, prices continued their strong ascent – and in many markets at a rate well above income growth.”

The national median existing singlefamily home price in the second quarter was $240,700, up 4.9 percent from the second quarter of 2015 ($229,400), which was previously the peak quarterly median sales price. The median price during the first quarter of this year increased 6.1 percent from the first quarter of 2015.

“Primarily from repeat buyers moving up or trading down, existing sales increased each month last quarter, and could’ve been even higher if not for a few speed bumps,” Yun said. “Closings were slowed a bit by meager supply levels and home prices in many areas that are still rising too fast.”

Bennett would like to see the United States incentivize innovation for a more environmentally friendly economy and conduct research and development on renewable energy sources.

A McLean resident, Bennett grew up on a farm in Illinois, just east of St. Louis, Mo., and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Illinois University.

She moved to Fairfax County 35 years ago with her husband, Rick, who died from leukemia in 1994. Bennett from 2004 to 2011 was married to former U.S. Rep. James Moran (D-8th). She still runs the real estate business she and her first husband started, but pops by only briefly each week because of her campaign schedule.

of Bennett.

“She’s a bridge-builder who will work towards pragmatic solutions, and most importantly, she has rejected the partisan, divisive and hateful rhetoric espoused by Donald Trump while Barbara Comstock has remained silent.”

Beyer noted Bennett had lived in Northern Virginia for decades and raised three sons alone following the death of her first husband. Her successful business experience gives her the perfect background to deal with federal-spending issues vital to Northern Virginia’s economy, he said.

“As a leader, LuAnn Bennett is the exact opposite of Donald Trump,” Beyer said. “She brings people together, she treats everyone with respect, she has a clear vision with concrete legislative plans to make this happen. LuAnn cannot understand Republicans who refuse to renounce the intolerance, bigotry, lying and egomania of their presidential nominee.”

Comstock’s backers touted her legislative successes concerning health, trans-

portation, human trafficking and the advancement of women in science careers.

Susan Falconer, Comstock’s campaign manager, said Bennett only recently moved to the 10th District and would be a “rubber stamp” for Hillary Clinton if the Democrat won the presidency.

Bennett’s campaign is “making the same tired and failed attacks that have been made against Barbara before,” Falconer said.

Fairfax County Republican Committee chairman Matt Ames said Comstock campaigns harder than anyone he’s ever dealt with, and that Bennett does not have a public-service background.

“She’s isolated and insulated and has done nothing to demonstrate knowledge of the needs of the community,” Ames said. “If I were a Democrat, I’d be ashamed that they couldn’t find someone with relevant experience to run.”

Comstock and Bennett will face each other at an Oct. 6 debate held by the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce. The candidates will meet again at a Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce forum on Oct. 19.

A disappointing record and injuryfilled season last fall left the returning players FOOTBALL football for the McLean Highlanders determined and self motivated to do better in 2016.

The McLean High School head coach and players believe the Highlanders are more prepared this season. The chance to prove so comes Friday, Aug. 26 when McLean opens its season with a home game at 7 p.m. against the Annandale Atoms.

“The guys are determined to be better than last season, and we have the right kids for that,” said Shaun Blair, in his third year as McLean’s head coach.

“They worked hard in the offseason and are uniquely bonded as a result. They pick themselves up and they want to win.”

Vienna American’s Run Ends at Regionals DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

A highly-accomplished three-year run of winning multiple Little League all-star baseball BASEBALL tournament championships ended for many Vienna American players Aug. 6 in Georgia.

That’s when the Major All-Stars finished 0-2 in the Southeastern Regional Tournament, falling to South Carolina, 12-8, in their second game of the double-elimination competition. Vienna American lost to Georgia, 14-1, in its first game Aug. 5.

Vienna American entered the region tourney as this summer’s District 4 and state tournament champions. In the past two years, many of the same play-

ers won district and state titles as 9-10 and 10-11 all-stars for Vienna American. The Major All-Stars were hoping to do one better this year by winning the region crown and advancing to the Little League World Series.

Vienna American manager Chris Leggett knew that would be a tall order because of the stiffness of the competition at regional play, but it remained a goal.

“We knew they were going to be good teams and they were good,” Leggett said. “But we picked the wrong time to play two bad games. We could have played better.”

In the loss to South Carolina, Vienna American was hurt by four errors as the team outhit the winners, 17-7, and led at one point, 7-1.

“We gave that game away in a lot of different ways,” Leggett said.

Tommy Fiocchi had four hits for Vienna.

Against Georgia, Vienna American faced a pitcher who had a 78 mph fastball and a good curve.

“We had not seen a pitcher like that all season,” Leggett said.

In the loss to Georgia, Vienna was outhit 16-4 and led 1-0 after two frames.

Kyle Robinson had two hits for Vienna.

“What we did over three summers was awesome and a great ride,” Leggett said.

NOTE: This summer, the Vienna American Major All-Stars compiled a 12-2 record. They had a three-year playoff mark of 43-7 in the three combined age groups.

Teams and individual athletes travel all over to compete or be part of all types of summer sports, and there are many examples.

Washington-Lee High School graduate Hunter Gray, now a college baseball player, spent the summer in Myrtle Beach, S.C. working as an intern at the huge and busy eight-field Ripken Experience baseball complex.

Gray worked all kinds of jobs, from game announcer, to field prep to rewriting a trivia-question book.

Various Arlington Babe Ruth baseball teams were up and down the East Coast playing in tournaments.

The Ferrick parents of Vienna traveled all over this summer as their daughter, Siena, and son, Tommy, participated in golf and Little League baseball competitions.

The Vienna American Little League Major All-Stars were in Norfolk, then Georgia playing in state and region baseball tournaments. In girls softball, the McLean Little League 10-11 all-stars were in southwest Virginia, then far western Tennessee doing the same.

Local swimmers and divers were all over performing in region and national meets.

The McLean Youth Soccer Hotspur Green boys 15-under team won a national title in Texas.

The Vienna Post 180 American Legion baseball squad spent a few days in Danville competing in the annual state tournament.

Then there were the many far away locales so many summer travel baseball and AAU softball teams visited for competitions. Myrtle Beach was one of those destinations.

As is the case during most summers, the travel logs were full for all kinds of local teams and athletes and many of their parents and families.

Hotspur Green Finish Summer as National Champions The McLean Youth Soccer Hotspur Green under-15 boys team recently crowned national SOCCER was champion at the 2016 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Frisco, Texas.

The Hotspur Green won the title after finishing fifth a year ago.

In the championship match, the Hotspur Green defeated the Chicago Fire Academy Raiders from Illinois.

After 80 minutes of regulation, the game was tied at 1. Ultimately, the contest was decided in penalty kicks, with McLean scoring the winner after eight rounds of shots.

The Hotspur Green are the first boys national championship team of any kind from McLean Youth Soccer, and the first under-15 national champion from Virginia since 1999.

very hard for this honor,” McLean coach Jamil Walker said. “All the teams we competed against were top-level. To break out of this strong group as national champions is a dream come true.”

Hamlet Swim Club had three winners. They were Katie Mack in the girls 15-18 free (26.36), Morgan Kass in the girls 8-under back (20.17), and Charles Palma in the boys 8-under back (19.66).

Mack was second in the 15-18 individual medley.

There were two winners from Chesterbrook, Eli Leonard in the girls 9-10 breaststroke (38.13) and Colin Francis in the boys 8-under free (16.27). Francis was second in the 8-under back.

Tuckahoe had two winners as well, Catherine Hughes in the girls 10-under individual medley (1:18.52) and Nolan Dunkel in the boys 9-10 back (35.86).

jin Bullock. Senior Robert Konnick is a returning tight end and Amir McCormack is a wide receiver.

Some of those linemen, like Onyejekwe, Meyers and Salt, will play on defense along with senior Matt Shaheen and senior linebacker Ryan Nader.

“We want to play hard on defense and get 11 hats on the ball,” Blair said.

McLean has some depth, according to Blair, who said the team will be “creative” on how players get breaks during

games. “We have some young players who will get the chance to play and contribute,” he said.

The McLean Highlanders amassed one of their best two-round performances in years on the golf course by winning the 21-team Annandale High School Atomic Golf Classic at Twin Lakes last week.

GOLF ROUNDUP McLean’s victorious two-day, 36-hole win total was 316-297–613. The 297 was one of the Highlanders’ lowest 18-hole team scores in school history.

“Everyone played outstanding golf,” McLean coach Rick Eyerly said. “They all were so focused and they were feeding off each other so much. It was exciting and a lot of fun for them.”

Other than winning its own George Pavlis competition, the tournament victory was McLean’s first in years.

McLean was in second place after the first day with the 316 total, seven strokes behind Robinson. The second day, McLean won going away by six shots.

Leading McLean was senior Kevin McCarthy. He tied for third with a 7472–146 total.

“Kevin anchors everything. He is such an outstanding golfer, has grit, doesn’t feel the pressure and is a team leader,” Eyerly said.

Cindy Tu, a sophomore, shot 76-75–151 and freshman Jonathan Zou 78-73–151. Senior Brendan Grammes had a second-round 77 and senior Jack Hecker had an 81.

“Cindy is so steady and Jonathan is so talented for being so young,” Eyerly said.

Juniors Tommy Schilder and Duncan Green are two other players for McLean. Green, a region qualifier last year, has an injury and is yet to play.

The McLean Highlanders hold their trophies after winning the Atomic Golf Classic last week.

“We had a pretty good idea we would be improved this season with the players we had coming back and the addition of Jonathan,” Eyerly said. “This is a pretty competitive group. They all want to go low.”

The individual winner was freshman Brian Feinstein of the Langley Saxons with a 75-69–144 total. As a team, Langley shot 309-319–628 with Brian Kim carding 79-78–157 and Thomas Dillard 81-78–159.

At its previous seventh annual George Pavlis Memorial Tournament at Hidden Creek, McLean finished second with a 310 score. Tu shot 71 and McCarthy 73. Tu’s 71 gave her second individually.

Langley entered a team of freshmen and shot 364, with a low of 88 from Owen Lipman. Marshall shot 382 with an 86 from Chase Motz and an 89 from Austin Harris. n At the Independence Invitational near Richmond, the Oakton Cougars placed third with a 315-297–612 team total and were led by a 76-72–148 from Curtis Holland. James River won the title with a 600 total.

Also for Oakton, Brandford Chandler shot 82-71–153, Jordan Tasaka 80-79–159, Thomas Bae 85-75–160 and Caroline DeLoach 77-85–162.

Langley finished sixth at 620 and was led by 152s from Matthew Feinstein (76-76) and Brandon Berry (78-74).

Langley, the 2015 Liberty Conference champion and a third-place 6A North Region finisher last fall, returns virtually its entire roster. The Saxons displayed that talent by winning the 36-hole Glory Days Grill Charger Challenge with a 308-305–613 total. Oakton was fourth at 318-317–635 and Madison seventh at 656.

“We are looking forward to a pretty good season,” Langley coach Al Berg said. “We have eight or nine players who can all shoot in the 70s, so we have a deep team.”

At the Charger Challenge, Langley was led by Berry, who shot 73-76-149 and placed fourth. Eli Thrasher, a junior, shot 78-73–151 Schindler 79-77–156.

Also, Brian Feinstein shot 76-83–159 for the Langley B team that shot 674.

Senior Ravi Makam and juniors Kenny Lipman and Matthew Feinstein are other top players for Langley, along with Chris Dillard and Gubenko.

Ferrick, who carries a 4.0-plus grade point average at Madison, is applying to major in marketing.

The Delaware Blue Hens won the Colonial Athletic Association championship last fall in women’s golf and will have four seniors Ferrick’s freshman season in 2017.

“I’m am looking forward to learning from them,” she said.

At Madison, Ferrick has been a top20 finisher, including tying for sixth as a freshman, in the Girls State Open the past three years. She also has finished high in conference and region tournaments and helped the Warhawks place high in those competitions as well.

This fall as a senior, Ferrick is the leader of a young team with a new head coach. She said the team is improving as the players and coaches get to know each other.

Goldsmith was chosen as the Vienna Post 180 team Most Valuable Player for this summer’s American Legion baseball season.

Goldsmith played in 23 games and batted .411. He had 37 hits and team highs in homers (six), RBI (30) and doubles 12. He had one triple.

Goldsmith helped Vienna win the District 17 regular season and tournament championships and amass an 18-8 record.

Divers Place at All-Star Meet A Staff Report

Brooks won with an 82.35 point total, Brown scored 83.3 and Halla 155.2.

Divers from local pools who were second were Dunn Loring’s Spencer Bloom in junior boys, Oakton’s Sarah Gurley in intermediate girls and teammate Matthew Warren in intermediate

boys.

Finishing third were Hamlet’s Victoria Wang in junior girls, Vienna Woods’ Reilly Blanton in intermediate girls and Tuckahoe’s Delaney Gallagher in senior girls.

Some divers were unable to compete at all-stars because of other commitments. n At the Divisional 3 meet the previous week, Tuckahoe’s Delaney Gallagher won her age group in senior girls. For Vienna Woods, Liam Klopfenstein won senior boys, Ivor Brown won freshman boys, Marleigh daSilva won freshman girls and Maddy Grosz won intermediate girls.

A number of former local high school baseball players are having good professional seasons for their minor league teams this summer. n Khalil Lee, a 2016 graduate of the Flint Hill School, was batting .290 through 39 games with 40 hits for the Rookie League Arizona Royals. Lee has nine doubles, five homers, 20 RBI, two triples and four stolen bases. Lee, 18, was drafted on the third round by the Kansas City Royals this past June.

n McLean High School graduate and right-hander pitcher Josh Sborz is playing for the Double A Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League.

After playing for the University of Virginia, the 6-3 Sborz, 22, was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has been playing two years of minor-league ball with a combined record of 8-7 with a 2.70 earned run average and 136 strikeouts in 1362/3 innings.

Sborz was recently promoted to

Double A, where he has appeared in four games and thrown six innings. n Joe Rizzo, a 2016 Oakton High School graduate, was batting .259 with 36 hits, including two home runs, seven doubles and 18 RBI through 36 games for the Arizona Mariners of the Arizona Rookie League. Rizzo, 18, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the second round this past June. n Oakton High School graduate Luke Willis, 23, was batting .336 with 49 hits,

three homers and 21 RBI for the Rookie League Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League in 43 games played. The outfielder had three doubles, two triples and nine stolen bases for the Kansas City Royals’ minor-league team.

After playing at George Mason University, Willis was drafted by the Royals on the 30th round in 2015. He batted a combined .274 last summer.

Fairfax County Notes SENIOR OLYMPICS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS: Northern Virginia Senior Olym-

pics is seeking volunteers to support more than 50 events scheduled at nearly two dozen venues across the region.

The 2016 program runs from Sept. 1021; volunteers must be at least 16 years are old.

LIBRARY OUTREACH GETS BOOKS IN HANDS OF YOUNGSTERS: Fairfax

County library personnel and volunteers distributed more than 27,000 books to young children over the past fiscal year, part of an effort to instill a love of reading, and learning, at an early age.

The library system’s early-literacy-outreach team – five staff members and 23 volunteers – swarms the county throughout the year bringing storytelling to children in child care centers, family-childcare homes and Head Start classrooms.

In the fiscal year that ended June 30, more than 2,200 children enjoyed between 10 and 12 storytimes throughout the year, and received a book to take home each time. A total of 27,417 books were given directly to children, and an additional 951 to teachers.

The books are made possible by funding from the Fairfax Library Foundation.

“Our goal,” said Renee Edwards, the county library system’s manager of earlyliteracy outreach, “is to make storytime enjoyable and engaging for every child.

We want them to be excited about books, and we want to be a model for teachers too. We’re grateful to the Fairfax Library Foundation for making the free books an added bonus of our visits.”

Among the volumes given out to children during over the past year were “Busy Little Squirrel” by Nancy Tafuri and “Bear Sees Colors” by Karma Wilson.

“We select books that represent quality literature, tell a good story and that children will enjoy,” Edwards said.

ON PHYSICAL, MENTAL HEALTH: PRS Inc. and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board have announced plans to team up on a new initiative, aimed at ensuring those living with mental illness receive coordinated health-care services.

“BeWell,” as the collaborative effort is known, is being funded by a grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“In treating people with mental illness, we know our odds of success are better if individuals receive coordinated care for their overall health, rather than having two mostly independent systems of care,” said Wendy Gradison, CEO of the nonprofit PRS Inc. The effort “represents a real shift that will create truly integrated and responsive services,” said Laura Yager of the Community Services Board.

“By connecting the dots, we expect rapid results that include a healthier community and cost savings,” Yager said.

BeWell is the second program run as a partnership between the two organizations, joining Turning Point, a coordinated specialty-care program to help adolescents and young adults who are experiencing a first psychotic episode.
