Big Maple Avenue Redevelopment Rebuffed Vienna Mixed-Use Project Falls Short of Achieving ‘Supermajority’ Vote Required After Protest BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Town Council members. Five of the seven Council members supported the project, but because at least 20 percent of the 11 adjacent property owners had filed petitions opposing the rezoning, the project did not achieve
the minimum of six votes, as required by town code. Developer Doug D’Alexander had proposed to build 49 townhouse-style condominiums atop 28,000 square feet of retail space and a 105-space underground

Fairfax County supervisors, who for years have talked about enacting a meals tax to raise revenue for school-system and county priorities, voted 8-2 June 7 to place such a referendum before voters on the Nov. 8 ballot. Supervisors Patrick Herrity (R-Springfield) and Linda Smyth (D-Providence) voted against the referendum, saying it further would pummel taxpayers who already were on the ropes. “We all know that if a meals tax passes, it would not be a silver bullet,” Smyth said. “It would be flat-out unfair,” added Herrity, who noted the restaurant industry supplies many first jobs to young people. The proposed 4-percent meals tax would be levied in addition to the 6-percent sales tax. Supervisors on a 7-3 vote
