rt Groups: Prospective Picassos, Hopper hopefuls and Warhol wannabes can hone their skills through a variety of art groups in the local area. The McLean Project for the Arts, based temporarily at 1446 Chain Bridge Road while the McLean Community Center is closed for renovations, offers art instruction and regularly hosts exhibits by accomplished artists. The Vienna Arts Society operates the Vienna Art Center at 115 Pleasant St.,

usiness Organizations: Whether you’re an entrepreneur, small-business owner or a member of a Fortune 500 corporation, the local area has plenty of business groups that participate in community life and advocate for commercial interests. The behemoth of them is the Tysonsbased Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, which represents about 700 organizations with 500,000 employees and often hosts debates for the state’s most important political races. The Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce caters to companies in that growing urban center and holds events and programs designed to build business relationships and educate members. The Vienna Business Association focuses mainly on the Vienna area and often sponsors town events. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

offee Shops: The American Revolution was plotted by budding patriots getting suitably energized and caffeinated in coffeehouses. The Sun Gazette’s readership area is peppered with places to enjoy a cup of joe, read newspapers (yes!), work on one’s laptop computer and socialize with neighbors. Starting with the obvious, Starbucks has locations in the McLean, Vienna, Great Falls, Oakton and Tysons areas. Some of these are located within a short distance of one another, so be sure to confirm the exact address when arranging to meet someone! But smaller chains and individual coffee shops also draw plenty of traffic and

have their own style. Peet’s Coffee & Tea in Vienna has a modern yet cozy feel with plenty of seating. Katie’s Coffee Shop, located inside The Old Brogue restaurant in Great Falls, offers a homey atmosphere and frequently exhibits works by local artists and photographers. Greenberry’s Coffee Co. in McLean is a popular meeting place for all walks of life and has a sizable outdoor seating area for those who wish to sip their java al fresco or merely avoid the crowds inside. Caffè Amouri in Vienna is a magnet for young people and bicyclists using the nearby Washington & Old Dominion Regional Trail. Starnut Cafe in McLean has a somewhat more formal vibe, a wide food selection and a less raucous atmosphere than some coffee shops.

elicious: The local area offers a sweeping panorama of restaurants that appeal to virtually every kind of palate. It’s impossible to list them all here, but here are some noteworthy offerings. Wasabi, located in the lower level of Tysons Corner Center, is a unique expe-

rience. A conveyor belt carrying scores of Japanese dishes weaves throughout the seating area and tempts diners to grab an entree or dessert. Chima Brazilian Steakhouse in Tysons has a huge, attractively stocked salad bar, but its main draw is an abundance of meat. Servers move from table to table carve off portions of steak, pork and chicken for customers. Caboose Brewery in Vienna nominally is located at 520 Mill St., N.E., but many of its clientele arrive by foot or bicycle

from the adjacent Washington & Old Dominion Trail. The brewery offers tasty beer and hearty pub food. Barrel & Bushel, located at the newly created plaza area at Tysons Corner Center, offers creative American cuisine and a wide selection of beers and bourbon. L’Auberge Chez François in Great Falls offers authentic French cuisine in a cozy farmhouse setting. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

xotic Cars: Visitors from the nation’s heartland, where sensible sedans and tough trucks are the norm, might gasp upon seeing all the gorgeous. super-expensive machines plying Northern Virginia’s roads. Tysons is home to many exotic car dealerships, including ones selling luxury brands such as Acura, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus and MercedesBenz and Tesla and exotic names such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, McLaren and Porsche. Other dealerships in Northern Virginia also sell Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari roadsters. For the less-well-heeled, there’s no harm or shame in gawking. Car buffs can sate their desires for free at “Cars and Coffee,” held every Saturday (weather permitting) from 6 to 9 a.m. at Katie’s Coffee House, 760 Walker Road in Great Falls.

lint Hill Cemetery: Located at 2845 Chain Bridge Road next to Oakton Church of the Brethren, Flint Hill Cemetery had its first

formal burial in 1852 and is one of the oldest community cemeteries in Fairfax County. The 5-acre cemetery sits on a former Confederate fort and is the final resting place of many local residents, including former Vienna Mayors Charles Robinson and M. Jane Seeman and the latter’s husband, Vienna Town Council member Rodger Seeman. Down to fewer than 225 in-ground burial spaces left, cemetery leaders broke ground Aug. 19 for a columbarium that will accommodate 300 urns.

reat Falls Freedom Memorial: Shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, horrified the nation and kicked off (still extant) U.S. military action in Afghanistan, a group of local residents led by the late retired U.S. Marine Corps. Col. Peter Hilgartner determined a monument needed to be built to honor the attacks’ six Great Falls victims. The group built the Great Falls Freedom Memorial on the front lawn of Great Falls Library, located at 9830 Georgetown Pike. Dedicated in November 2004, the memorial consists of a circle of stone pavers with flagpoles on the edge and three distinctive-looking pieces of local stone in the center.

alloween Parade: Vienna’s annual Halloween Parade is one of the region’s most iconic community events, drawing scores of organi-

zations, hundreds of costumed children and thousands of spectators to Maple Avenue. Get there early and stake out your spot with a blanket, otherwise you’ll be standing the whole time and craning your neck. Little about the parade has changed in decades. Police motorcycle crews roar around on their Harley-Davidsons with blue lights flashing, marching bands display their precision and fill the air with music, Scouts show pride in their troops and community, antique cars ferry the grand marshal and other dignitaries, politicians reach out to potential voters just days before the November election and sports-team mascots sometimes make special appearances.

nova Health System: If local residents have medical emergencies or a need treatment for all manner of ailments, they’ll likely be treated at one of five hospitals run by Inova Health System. The organization, which employs about 16,000 people and serves more than 2 million people annually, also operates the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, Inova Schar Cancer Institute, Inova Translational Medicine Institute, Inova Neuroscience Institute and Inova Children’s Hospital. The Inova Center for Personalized Health, located on the former ExxonMobil campus across Gallows Road from Inova Fairfax Hospital, fills a vital business and employment vacuum following the oil company’s decampment to Houston. The facility symbolizes the hopes many business and political leaders have for the region’s future.

obs: Northern Virginia’s highways aren’t jammed with vehicles morning and night because people enjoy sitting around in traffic. The people surrounding you likely are headed off to work in a region that typically has an unemployment rate far below the national average. According to figures reported Aug. 30 by the Virginia Employment Commission, Fairfax County’s unemployment rate in July was 3.1 percent, with 629,211 county residents employed and 20,263 looking for work. The national unemployment rate for that month was 4.6 percent. The region benefits from its proximity

to the federal government in Washington, D.C., which employs thousands of local residents. The Central Intelligence Agency is based in McLean and the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center is located in Vienna. Despite major cutbacks following the last economic recession, Northern Virginia still receives billions of dollars in federal contracting each year. In fiscal year 2016, companies in the county received $23.9 billion worth of federal contracts, which amounted to 5 percent of the national total and 47 percent of Virginia’s share. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, which is headquartered in Tysons, strives to entice businesses from around the country and world to set up shop in the county. Eight Fortune 500 companies are based in the county.

ennedy Family History: The Kennedy political dynasty is famous for its homes in Hyannisport, Mass., on Cape Cod and Georgetown in Washington, D.C. But two stately McLean homes played essential roles in the family’s history. Hickory Hill, located along the short section of Chain Bridge Road between Dolley Madison Boulevard and Georgetown Pike, for a time served as home John F. and Robert F. Kennedy and their families. The latter was at Hickory Hill in November 1963 when he learned President Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. Merrywood, a circa-1919 Georgianstyle mansion located on a high bluff overlooking the Potomac River, was the childhood home of President Kennedy’s wife, the former Jacqueline Bouvier, as well as the late author and social critic Gore Vidal.

When the Great Falls & Old Dominion Railroad was being planned, landowners in Langley and Lewinsville demanded too much for their right-of-way. ight Games: These days, a high percentage of youth and high-school athletic events are held under the lights at night, whether for inside or outside sports and certainly for weekday events. Events are held at night because evening play is thought to attract more spectators, especially adults who work, generating more revenue. High-school football on Friday nights is the biggest attraction, as is boys’ and girls’ high-school basketball on those same evenings. During the spring, there was a time not many years ago when girls’ public high-school softball fields were not lit, so games began about 4 p.m. in order to finish before darkness. Those public-school fields are all lighted now. Thus, softball games start at the same time as evening high-school baseball, lacrosse and soccer contests. High-school tennis courts are the only outside venues that aren’t yet lighted, so matches begin in the afternoon. More and more youth-league fields and complexes have lights, as well as most Little League baseball and softball venues. Night games of all levels are so prevalent now, some athletes reach high school and beyond and rarely play a daytime event.

akton Girls’ Basketball: No high-school girls’ basketball team in Northern Virginia has

been more successful over the past dozen or more years than the Oakton Cougars, with Fred Priester being the squad’s head coach that entire time. Oakton has won 22 or more games for 14 consecutive seasons, has won 17 Concorde District tournament championships since the 1994-95 season, has won seven regional tourney crowns, one state championship, and finished second in the state two other times, including this past season. Overall, Oakton has played in the state tournament nine times under Priester, who has 694 career wins and has been Oakton’s coach since 1994-95. Since Priester took over as Oakton’s head coach, the Cougars have won 554 games, an average of 24 wins per season. Countless Oakton players have gone on to play in college, with Jasmine Thomas playing in the professional WNBA.

otomac River: The region’s most prominent geographical feature is the Potomac River, which separates Virginia from Maryland and the District of Columbia and offers considerable recreation opportunities for naturalists, kayakers, boaters and those who fish. While relatively broad and calm at Riverbend Park in Great Falls, the river soon plunges over spectacular rapids at Great Falls National Park, then winds through Mather Gorge and down past Scotts Run Nature Preserve before flattening out again near Georgetown in the District. Theodore Roosevelt Island on the edge of Arlington is a good place to check out the river and its flora and fauna, and has a monument in honor of the former president.

Tysons Corner Center, one of the largest shopping mall’s in the country, has served customers for nearly 50 years. Its offerings include anchor stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Lord & Taylor, plus a two-story L.L. Bean outlet, an Apple store, a movie theater and many restaurants. Capital One Bank’s new headquarters building, which is far along in construction just northeast of Route 123 and the Capital Beltway, will be Tysons’ tallest building at 470 feet. But that title may not last long if supervisors approve The View at Tysons, a massive mixed-use project that would be built just north of the Spring Hill Metrorail station. through Oakton. Its only remnant is a trolley station that now serves as a private residence. Vienna holds the distinction of being the first place in history where a train was used in combat. A contingent of 668 Union troops and 29 officers with the 1st Ohio Regiment were being transported by train on June 17, 1861, when some troops were dispatched to guard railroad bridges and crossings. The roughly 300 soldiers still on the train were ambushed by about 575 Confederate soldiers from the 1st South Carolina Volunteers near what is now the Washington & Old Dominion Trail and Park Street, S.E. Six or seven people (the number is in dispute) were killed in the battle before the Union troops withdrew. All those rail and trolley lines are gone now, but the Metrorail system still demonstrates how important rail is to communities. The system’s Orange Line ends just outside Vienna’s southern border, after having stopped in Dunn Loring, where the station now is surrounded by brand-new mixed-use development. Metrorail’s Silver Line makes four stops in Tysons before terminating in Reston. A second phase of construction soon will extend that line all the way into Loudoun County, with a stop at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Silver Line’s presence in Tysons has kicked off an incredible building boom, as those developing properties

The town of Vienna has Vienna Youth Softball. Those jurisdictions all offer youth basketball and soccer and the popularity of lacrosse has exploded in the last 15 years. Now volleyball has become popular, especially for girls. There are so many different youth leagues and sports now that finding outdoor field space has become a big problem, along with the availability of indoor time and space for basketball, swimming, ice hockey, wrestling and volleyball. There is increased participation and a limited number of fields and indoor venues. In the summer, there are multiple outdoor swimming leagues for dozens of teams.
