Locked in the region’s marquee congressional race, U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th) and Democratic challenger LuAnn Bennett hold sharply different views on which policies best would serve the district

and country.

The candidates outlined their positions during meetings in October with editorial staffers of the Sun Gazette and InsideNova.

Comstock, a lawyer and former aide to U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th) who formerly represented the 34th District in the

House of Delegates, said she often reaches across the aisle to champion issues ranging from human trafficking and heroin to hightechnology and research-and-development tax credits.

Fairfax County voters will have more to consider than just the choice between presidential candidates Hillary Clinton (D) and Donald Trump (R) when they go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Voters will have to select Congressional representatives and decide whether to approve a meals tax, three bond referendums and two state constitutional amendments.

The most-watched congressional race will be the 10th District battle between incumbent U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) and Democratic challenger LuAnn Bennett.

Elsewhere in the region, Democrats have a pretty solid lock. U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-11th) is running unopposed.

In the 8th District, U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D) is facing challenges from Republican Charles Hernick and independent Julio Gracia, but that district trends overwhelmingly Democratic.

Fairfax County’s most contentious local ballot item will be the proposed 4percent meals tax, which would apply not only to meals and drinks at restaurants and food trucks but also to prepared foods at supermarkets.

County officials estimate the tax would raise about $100 million per year, 70 percent of which would be allotted to the school system and the remainder to pay for county services, capital improvements and property-tax relief.

Voters also must decide whether to approve three county bond referendums: $120 million in transportation bonds, which would pay for road projects and the county’s share to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority; $107 million in park bonds, which would finance park projects and land preservation and pay the county’s $12.3 million share to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority; and $85 million in human-services and community-development bonds, which would pay for human-services facilities and other projects, such as community centers and shelters.

Months after producing mega-hit “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Vienna Theatre Company is taking the opposite tack and delivering four lesserON known one-acts that their targets.

STAGE find“Eclectic Essentials II” touches on Elvis super-fans, siblings about to be separated by war, bureaucratic intransigence and raging teenage emotions.

The show kicks off with Ellen Byron’s “Graceland,” directed by Barbara Carpenter, which is set in Memphis in 1982 shortly before Elvis Presley’s mansion first opens to the public.

Middle-aged Bev (Sallie Willows) has set up camp in the wee morning hours in expectation of being Graceland’s first visitor. But a younger and equally obsessive Elvis fan, Rootie (Alexa Yarboro), plops down ahead of her in the queue and the pair soon set to arguing.

It’s fun to watch them quote facts about the King to each other and grudgingly work toward friendship. Willows and Yarboro have good interplay and add a healthy dose of physical one-upmanship.

The character Rootie (Yarboro again) also makes an appearance in the next oneact, Ellen Byron’s “Asleep on the Wind.”

Also directed by Barbara Carpenter, the sketch is set in 1972 in a small clearing in Louisiana where Rootie and one of her brothers, Beau (Andy Gable), meet for heart-to-heart chats.

Beau counsels Rootie about the need to stay in school and he breaks the news he has enlisted in the Army, where he has been promised adventures in tropical jungles. For younger readers unfamiliar with that historical period, the exotic destination is war-torn Vietnam.

Yarboro gives vent to Rootie’s emotions and is a good sport as Gable’s Beau plays multiple tricks on her.

Two performances of Christopher Durang’s “DMV Tyrant” bracket the 15minute intermission. It’s the same oneact both times, but with the two actors switching roles and adopting different personalities.

The action, directed twice by Jessie Roberts, occurs in New York’s Division of Motor Vehicles, but really it could be anywhere. A customer has passed a driving test to renew her license, but the instructor failed to enter this information

into the monolithic bureaucracy’s computer system.

Enter the DMV lady, who’s busy reading behind the counter and can’t be troubled to bend the rules or take any initiative whatsoever to help the frustrated customer. The dialogue is cutting on both sides, and the audience gleefully anticipates hearing lines the second time around.

In the first performance, Hope Slonim plays an annoyed yuppie and Marilyn Pifer the crusty DMV employee; in the second, Pifer is the vexed customer who hints she may have driven to the agency illegally and Slonim plays the gum-chewing, ostentatiously newspaper-folding bureaucrat.

The show’s longest and best sketch is Lee Blessing’s “Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music,” which is directed

by Tom Epps.

The one-act’s name refers to the moniker divorcee Eve (Heather Plank) has given to a Houston bar. She’s up on the roof making repairs, keeping her wiseacre customers in line and having a heart-to-heart with Catherine (Britt Bennett), an uncertain young woman whose erratic behavior caused her dismissal from a nunnery.

Eve is worldly wise, cynical and blunt and quickly gets the truth from Catherine.

Bennett well conveys the conflicting emotions of youth and hilariously displays, using mild profanity, some to the tics that got her thrown out of religious life.

Also in the mix are Roy (Timbo Longio), a plainspoken and decent blue-collar customer who’s taken a shine to Catherine, and Jason (Cliff Rooks), a rebellious teenager who has goaded irate tavern owner Jim (Jon Roberts) one time too many.

The final one-act supplies plenty of hard-won wisdom and emotional complexity.

As with its last production, Vienna Theatre Company is performing this show upstairs at Vienna Baptist Church because the troupe’s usual venue, the Vienna Community Center, is closed for renovations.

The church is a bit difficult for visitors to navigate; prominent signage would help.

It’s not an ideal setting, but the material and performances are entertaining and thought-provoking.

“Eclectic Essentials II” will be performed Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, at 8 p.m. at Vienna Baptist Church, 541 Marshall Road, S.W. Tickets are $14.

Vienna Halloween Parade Draws Family-Style Crowd

Throngs of Northern Virginians packed blankets and snacks, donned costumes and made the trek to Vienna Oct. 26 to view or participate in the town’s signature autumn event, the Halloween Parade.

The cool, crisp weather was ideal for thousands of spectators who lined up several deep along the parade route, which ran west along Maple Avenue and turned south onto Center Street.

James Cudney, a local business owner and Vienna Business Association board member who also has served on several town committees, was this year’s grand marshal. The parade turned 70 this year, even though town officials canceled the 2002 event because the D.C. snipers still were on the loose.

The parade featured all its usual attractions, from motorcycle-police officers with blue lights flashing to antique cars, baton-twirling dancers, marching bands, sports teams and service organizations eager to get the work out about their missions. White-robed students from Enshin Karate broke baked-pine boards, demonstrated martial-arts moves and even performed push-ups in front of the grandstand.

Hundreds of adults and children donned costumes for the parade. Superheroes, “Star Wars” and “Addams Family” characters, monsters, robots and dinosaurs were popular outfit choices this year.

One man even operated a remote-controlled vehicle topped by a mannequin’s head, the face of which was painted like a demonic clown.

Vienna police kept order, allowing the marchers and crowd to enjoy one of the area’s most popular fall spectacles.

Our View: Our Ballot Selections for Election Day

It has been a long and dispiriting campaign season, but all will be over next Tuesday. For that, we can all give thanks for small favors.

The Sun Gazette has no view on the presidential election, except to be disenchanted by the spectacle. But over the past month, the newspaper has weighed in on various races of local concern. To recap our choices: 8th District U.S. House of Representatives: The Sun Gazette supports incumbent Democrat Don Beyer against Republican Charles Hernick and independent Julio Gracia.

10th District U.S. House of Representatives: The Sun Gazette supports incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock over Democrat LuAnn Bennett.

11th District U.S. House of Representatives: The Sun Gazette supports incumbent Democrat Gerald Connolly, who is unopposed.

Fairfax County Meals-Tax Referendum: The Sun Gazette opposes the ballot measure that would add a 4-percent surtax on top of the 6-percent sales tax on restaurant meals and prepared foods.

Fairfax County Bond Referendums: The Sun Gazette supports the three bond referendums on the Fairfax ballot: $107 million for parks and park facilities; $85 million for human services and community development; and $120 million for transportation and to fund Fairfax’s share of the capitalimprovement program of the Metro system.

State Constitutional Amendments: The Sun Gazette supports both amendments to the Virginia constitution on the ballot. One provides tax exemption for the surviving spouses of public-safety employees killed in the line of duty, the other strengthens Virginia’s right-to-work law by enshrining it in the constitution.

Approval of Meals Tax Will Boost Schools Editor: Six years of teaching in Fairfax County Public Schools has given me an insider’s perspective on the quality of education that has been provided to our communities.

Sadly, that quality is diminishing.

There is an increasing demand for re-

sources, space and, most importantly, excellent teachers who can meet the needs of growing student population.

Fairfax County residents have an opportunity to broaden the tax base and avoid increasing property taxes by voting to support the 4-percent meals-tax proposal on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Many families choose to live in Fairfax County, in part, because of the great schools. The excellent reputation of FCPS attracts businesses, raises home values and is the heart of a thriving community.

Meals-Tax Proposition Has Multiple Flaws Editor: The phrase “meals tax” is both a misnomer and is misleading as to its target.

This tax would apply not just to food on your plate at a restaurant, but to your beverage as well. Worse than that, it would apply to all prepared foods, regardless of where they were bought – fast food, grocery store salad bar, hotfood bar, deli counter, roasted chickens, convenience store, delis, bakeries, food trucks, food carts, carry out, home delivery.

But worst of all, the tax is regressive. The very people we profess to care about – the lower-income, single parents, people working more than one job to make ends meet – are the ones who would suffer disproportionately. They do not have the time to always plan, shop for and prepare a meal from raw ingredients.

Moreover, they are the ones to whom “just a couple dollars extra” on their

bills mean the most in terms of their budget.

Now let’s take a look at the benefits of a meals tax. Who gains the most?

Those who have the biggest houses, subject to the most property tax. Certainly not those who live in apartments or in tiny houses, or with other family members because that’s all they can afford.

And how about that lower property tax as a result of a meals tax? Nowhere is it guaranteed, In fact, it’s subject to “changing conditions.” Even if those property taxes do not go up next year, they certainly will the following year, yet the meals tax will be with us forever.

Even the benefit to the schools would be limited. Not all the revenue would go to them.

A deeper issue is that, on a national level, the U.S. spends more per capita on schools than its peer nations, while the students score at the bottom of the scale against those same countries. That

would indicate that simply throwing money at the schools has not been the answer.

The Fairfax County government should exercise a great deal more fiscal responsibility before daring to ask for more money from its constituency.

The argument that some of the tax will be paid by non-residents in no way suggests that there’s a reason to believe that those, at least, who come here now because it’s cheaper than the surrounding jurisdictions will continue to come.

Unlike Fairfax County residents, they are not a captive audience.

And the Board of Supervisors’ argument that Fairfax County should impose a meals tax because “the surrounding jurisdictions do it” sounds a lot like Johnny complaining “but all my friends do it” when he wants to go skateboarding off a cliff.

Woman’s Club of McLean Preps Annual Holiday Tour A number of intriguing homes will be open for viewing as the Woman’s Club of McLean hosts its annual Holiday Homes Tour on Dec. 1.

Winter is approaching, and that means it’s time to take an intimate look at some of McLean’s lovely homes and benefit local charities to boot.

The Woman’s Club of McLean will hold its 50th annual Holiday Homes Tour on Thursday, Dec. 1. The tour, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., costs $25 in advance, $30 the day of the event.

This year’s tour features five homes.

The first, located on Turkey Run Road, has a two-story foyer with a chandelier and artwork, formal dining room, lovely kitchen and a window-lined family room with a vaulted ceiling and custom-made fireplace.

The house has five bedrooms, a recreation area, patio, covered porch and a master suite with a vaulted ceiling, spacious bathroom and a pair of custom

closets.

The second home, located on Mackall Avenue in the Langley Forest neighborhood, is a major expansion of a previous house and built in the Colonial Revival architecture style. Marty Nohe, a Prince William supervisor chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority – same acronym but a different group – said his state-backed funding group now has the revenues it needs to take on sought-after projects that will benefit the whole region, not just certain localities.

“Traffic jams don’t respect jurisdictional boundaries,” Nohe said.

The authority has finished eight of its 79 congestion-relief projects, spending $990 million, Nohe said. Some future endeavors include a $300 million upgrade of the Interstate 66/Route 28 interchange and traction-power improvements along Metro’s Blue Line, which will facilitate the use of eight-car trains, he said.

Jim Corcoran, a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board member, said the organization’s leadership is focused heavily on safety, financial management and providing high-quality, reliable service.

Like others at the event, Corcoran – who heads the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce – sang the praises of Metro’s new general manager and CEO, Paul Wiedefeld, who aggressively has implemented changes during his first 11 months with the transit agency.

Metro’s SafeTrack rail initiative, while the bane of commuters, has squeezed three years’ worth of improvements – such as the replacement of 25,000 railroad ties – within just one year, Corcoran said.

The top layer of the transit system’s management has been replaced over the last two years and WMATA officials on Oct. 27 were scheduled to deliver their first on-time audit in four years, he said.

Metro officials are expecting a $300 million shortfall next year, caused in part by declining ridership, Corcoran said.

Public-Safety Notes VIENNA POLICE INVESTIGATE CASE OF MAN FOUND WITH KNIFE WOUNDS:

Vienna police dispatched officers to Commons Drive, N.W., on Oct. 23 at 4:58 p.m. after receiving a report involving a person with a knife. When the officers arrived, they found an injured man who was suffering from wounds that appeared to have been caused by a knife.

Police summoned rescue personnel, who transported the man to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities determined the man had been injured in a residence on Commons Drive where he had been staying. Vienna police continue to investigate this case.

BULLET FIRED THROUGH WINDOW OF VIENNA RESTAURANT: An employee at

Anita’s New Mexico Style Mexican Food, 521 Maple Ave., E., told Vienna police on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. that a window in the restaurant had been shattered. Upon investigating, police determined an unknown person had fired one bullet into the restaurant.

dent living in the 1800 block of Somerville Drive in McLean told Fairfax County police that on Oct. 25 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. the home had been burglarized and property stolen from inside.

GREAT FALLS RESIDENT SCARES OFF INTRUDER: Fairfax County police dis-

patched officers to the 11000 block of Georgetown Pike in Great Falls on Oct. 25 at 10:24 p.m. after receiving a report that a homeowner had found an intruder on the floor of the home.

When confronted, the man fled the home and the complainant made no contact with him. The suspect was described as black, around 45 years old and having an athletic build. Nothing appeared to be missing from the home, police said.

SKIMMING DEVICES FOUND ON FAIR OAKS GAS PUMPS: Financial skimming

devices were found inside three gas pumps during a regular maintenance check Oct. 24 at around 10:25 a.m. at the Briar Oaks Service Center, located in the 12300 block of Lee Jackson Memorial Highway (Route 50) in Fair Oaks, Fairfax County police said.

Financial-crimes and crime-scene detectives responded to collect the devices.

The investigation continues, police said.

detectives recommend residents: • Regularly check their financial statements for any unusual or fraudulent charges and report them to the card company immediately.

• Use credit cards instead of debit cards to make purchases, as it can be more difficult to have bank funds reimbursed.

• Inspect all credit-card readers prior to sliding or inserting their cards. Residents may not be able to see a skimming device, but should look for pry marks, scratches or other signs of tampering.

Card users should report suspicious activity to police. If residents suspect they have been victimized by skimming scammers, they should report it to police online through the Financial Crimes Online Reporting system.

employee at Skintelligence, 421 Church St., N.E., told Vienna police on Oct. 21 at 4:45 p.m. that a man who came into the business had begun acting suspiciously and asking questions that made her feel uncomfortable.

At one point, the man walked behind the front desk and grabbed the employee by the hair, the complainant said.

The employee waited a few days to file a police report. Authorities advised her to notify police if she sees the man again.

Officers went to the address and found the man, who said he accidently had bumped into the complainant.

He stated the complainant then began following him, cursing at him and making threatening statements. Police advised both men of the warrant process, should they wish to pursue charges.

Fairfax Supervisors Laud Civic Volunteer of the Year Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently honored Robert Marro for his selection as the 2016 recipient of the Barbara Varon Volunteer Award for community service.

In recognition of his years of exemplary community and volunteer work in Fairfax County, Robert Marro was honored by the Board of Supervisors with the 2016 Barbara Varon Volunteer Award during its meeting Oct. 18.

The award, named to honor the memory of Barbara Varon, former chairman of the Fairfax County Electoral Board, was established to recognize a Fairfax County resident’s dedication to improving the community through volunteer service.

Marro, who was nominated by the office of Supervisor John Foust (D-Dranesville), has served as the governmentoutreach chair for the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) since 2002, and has been instrumental in giving the ADAMS community a major role in civic engagement in Fairfax and Virginia.

Marro has developed numerous programs to help foreign-born community members understand the Virginia election

process, and worked tirelessly to make the ADAMS Center an institute that has become a “mandatory stop” for officials and candidates in every election. He created and oversaw a program to invite candidates to visit Friday prayer services at ADAMS’ 11 branch locations to address and meet the almost 5000 worshippers attending each week, and to come to the annual Eid (end of Ramadan) celebrations, where their messages can reach more than 25,000 area Muslims.

Over the years, Marro has led the ADAMS teams in arranging annual candidate forums and town-hall meetings for local senators and delegates to brief hundreds of ADAMS members on issues and activities of the General Assembly session and other topical events. The team also worked to educate prospective U.S. citizens on the citizenship process so they could complete it in time to vote in November.

Florida, Vegas Stand at Top of New Ranking for Home Sales Among the 50 largest U.S. real-estate markets, the top five (in order) were Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach County, Tampa, Orlando and Las Vegas, each demonstrating a vigorous combination of consistently strong demand, home price appreciation, and economic and demographic growth.

That’s according to the online realestate marketplace Ten-X, which ranks the nation’s largest housing markets according to current and forecast housing fundamentals. Its fall report was issued Oct. 24.

The Washington, D.C., market ranked 25th on the list, with Northern Virginia coming in at 39th.

Though Florida markets continued to dominate the rankings for a second season, there was some movement within the top five. Fort Lauderdale overtook Palm Beach County as the hottest market, dropping Palm Beach down a notch, while Tampa remains unchanged in third place. Orlando fell from second place to fourth place while Las Vegas climbed to fifth, edging Seattle out of the top five for the first time in more than a year.

“Florida’s housing market continues to set the pace for the nation, with five of the top 10 metros on our report,” said Ten-X executive vice president Rick Sharga. “While all of the top five markets took substantial hits during the housing crash, especially Las Vegas, the continued road to recovery for these destination cities is looking even brighter.”

In spite of being hit hard by the housing crisis, Florida metros have seen their market fundamentals surge thanks to solid economic and demographic expansion, in turn stimulating robust price gains and increasing home sales. Las Vegas tells a similar story.

Rounding out the top 10 on the ranking are Phoenix, Seattle, Nashville, Dallas and Jacksonville. Among communities in the top 20: Denver, Portland, Atlanta, San Francisco, Oakland, Columbus, Raleigh, San Jose, Miami and Boston.

“This quarter’s report is a strong reminder of how uneven the housing recovery has been, with strong performance by cities in the South, Southeast, West and Pacific Northwest, and much weaker trends in the Northeast and Midwest,” Sharga said.

Of the nearly 2 million graduating seniors taking the exam this year, only about 1,600 achieved top scores. n The McLean High School Highlander Marching Bands 2016 show – “Story of My Life” – won Grand Champion awards at two USBands competitions held recently.

Beautifully-played tunes are smartly woven with exciting formations by the 160-person marching band and color guard. In the end, they all fall into a perfect heart.

Throughout the show, a simple narration of a grandmother reading a letter to her grandchild reminds the audience what’s most important in our lives: love.

“I’m very proud of our students’ accomplishments. They’ve worked so hard and I thought their performances were fantastic, their best so far,” said band director Chris Weise.

At the USBands Westminster Regional Championship, McLean took home first place in Class 6 Open, Best Visual Performance, Best Music, Best General Effect, and Highest Score Overall/Grand Champions.

Annual partnership events and activities include the mentor and pen-pal programs and Project Neighbors, providing holiday gifts, food, clothing, furniture, and support to families in need.

Navy Federal also provides special recognition for students making straight As, teacher-appreciation luncheons, student and faculty awards for service, financial support for faculty professional development and funding for printing a number of publications. Vienna/Oakton Notes VIENNA OFFICES CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY: Vienna town government offices will

be closed on Friday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Police services will be uninterrupted.

VIENNA POLICE SERGEANT RETIRES:

Vienna police Sgt. Michael Reeves retired Oct. 1 after serving for more than 29 years with the Vienna Police Department. The department honored Reeves with a reception Sept. 15 at Maplewood Grill.

Reeves began his career with the department in March 1987 and after graduating from the sixth session of the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, he was assigned to the Patrol Division.

In 1991, Reeves was promoted to sergeant, where he gained respect as a leader and mentor from rookie and veteran officers alike, police said. Reeves transferred to the Narcotics Task Force in September 1993 and four years later returned to the Patrol Division.

Department officials named Reeves supervisor of the Traffic Division in June 2006 and he concluded his career by returning to the Patrol Division this past January and supervising a patrol squad.

Reeves graduated from Corcoran School of Art in 1984 with a degree in fine arts. He received a Valor Award in 2006, was named Vienna Police Officer of the Year in 2008 and earned several honorguard recognitions.

Reeves’ sense of humor and dedication to his daily physical-fitness training will be missed by all who had the opportunity to work with him during the past three decades, officials said.

PAVEMENT RESURFACING BEGINS AT NOTTOWAY PARK: A three-week pave-

ment-surface renovation project gets underway on Oct. 31 at Nottoway Park in Vienna, affecting traffic flow in the park.

The $490,000 project will include renovations to the entrance road and parking lots at the park. The worn-out pavement has exceeded its service life and is in need of replacement, government officials said.

Nottoway Park and the visitor center will remain open during the project. Fairfax County park-maintenance funds are being utilized for this project.

The project being is phased in order to limit the impact on park users during construction.

SPECIAL CELEBRATION HIGHLIGHTS VIENNA CANINES: The Vienna town

Tournament Play Begins This Week A Staff Report

The Langley Saxons (21-1, 7-0) clinched the top seed in the upcoming girls Liberty Conference Tournament with a 3-1 vicVOLLEYBALL tory over the visiting Madison Warhawks on Oct. 25 in high school volleyball action. Two nights later, Langley downed McLean, 3-0, to finish the regular season.

The victories gave Langley an 18match winning streak entering the postseason.

For Langley in the win over Madison (18-7), Elena Shklyar had 25 assists, 14 kills and eight digs to lead the way. Raya Mufti had 15 kills, Olivia Franke had 12 kills, Allison Franke had eight, Jackson Friedman had 17 digs and six kills, Lauren Pratte had 24 assists and 15 digs, and Sarah Maebius had 24 digs.

Madison defeated Hayfield, 3-0, in its final match to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. McLean finished the regular season 17-7-2.

Madison Wins; McLean, Oakton Snap Streaks A Staff Report

The Madison Warhawks (8-1, 5-1) remained in second place in the Liberty Conference with a 34-17 home victory over the Washington-Lee Generals on Oct. 28 in high school football action.

FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Madison led 14-7 at halftime behind a nine-yard touchdown run by Landon Thomas and a 19-yard pass from quarterback Jacob Choutka to John Finney.

Johnny Hecht had catches of 27 and 22 yards in the first half, the first setting up Thomas’ TD. Finney had five catches in the first half for 72 yards and Choutka was 10 of 16 for 150.

On defense in the first half against WL’s all-passing offense, Sam Kidd had two

interceptions, the first in the end zone, and Finney had the other.

Madison scored 13 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.

Thomas rushed for 90 yards and three touchdowns and Brandon Walker ran for 42. Nick Conforti caught four passes for 60 yards and Hecht three for 65. Choutka was 11 of 21 passing for 188 yards. n In other Oct. 28 Liberty Conference games, the Langley Saxons (1-8, 1-5) lost to the host Yorktown Patriots, 21-20; and the host McLean Highlanders (1-8, 1-5) won for the first time this season with a 28-20 homecoming victory over the visiting and winless Fairfax Rebels (0-9), who led 14-0 in the first half.

For McLean, Carter Govan had a sixyard TD run on fourth down that helped give McLean the lead for good at 21-20.

Amir McCormick then ran 75 yards for a score on a blocked field goal.

Earlier in the contest, Adam Taylor (45 yards rushing) had a scoring run and Gavin Legg (five catches, 97 yards) caught a touchdown pass from Govan, who was 13 of 21 passing for 190 yards. Govan ran for 109 yards on 16 carries.

The win snapped McLean’s 10-game losing streak. The Highlanders’ lone win last season also was over Fairfax.

With the football, volleyball and cross country postseasons just getting started, or still to come, much more of the same is certainly yet to occur.

As for heartache, how about the last-second loss of the third-seeded and upset-minded Langley Saxons to the top-seed Fairfax Rebels in the championship game of the girls Liberty Conference field hockey tournament? The winning goal came with 17 seconds to play.

Also in field hockey, the Oakton Cougars ended regular-season play on a four-match win streak, then were disappointed by going 0-2 in the playoffs, including an overtime loss.

The Wakefield Warriors were a surprise in the sport, finishing third in the Capitol Conference Tournament to earn a first-time berth to play in a region tourney.

Another field-hockey surprise were 14 goals scored by Fairfax in a firstround region tourney match. Teams usually tally one or two goals per game. Amassing 14 in one contests is a season’s worth for some squads. n In girls golf, scores soared to record highs at the Girls State Open because of windy and chilly conditions during the two-day event in Fairfax.

There were just six rounds in the 70s and 58 of 90 or higher. The lowest rounds were 77. Yorktown sophomore Lacey McCormack had a solid first round by shooting 87.

Disappointing scores were carded by seniors Caroline DeLoach of Oakton and Siena Ferrick of Madison.

They were considered among favorites, but did not place in the top 20. n A surprise in boys golf was the Flint Hill Huskies winning a conference title in what was supposed to be a transition season.

High School Roundup CONFERENCE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS: Five local high school teams

in the Sun Gazette’s coverage area won conference cross country championship Oct. 26 at Burke Lake Park and another finished second.

In the Liberty Conference the Madison Warhawks defended their titles winning the boys and girls titles, as did the Oakton Cougars in the Concorde Conference.

In the Capitol Conference, the Marshall Statesmen won the girls crown and the boys were second.

The Madison boys won with 22 points, placing seven runners in the top 16 and the girls won with 36 and had five in the top 17.

Madison’s Sean Grimm won the Liberty boys race in 15:21 to defend his title. Madison’s Zach Holden was second (15:50), Patrick Murphy third (15:53), Chamberlain Zulauf fifth (16:01) and John Rogers 11th (16:22).

total, the highest winning score (by seven strokes) in the 15-year history of the event.

The tournament was played last week at International Country Club in Fairfax.

NOTE: DeLoach and Ferrick played in the Girls State Open all four years of their high school careers. Ferrick will play in college the University of Delaware.

For the Madison girls, Merrill Leak was fourth (18:20), Jeana Bogdon fifth (18:25), Katherine Fox seventh (18:35), Anna Miller eighth (18:42) and Maria Bogdon 12th (18:57).

McLean’s Caroline Howley was second in the girls race in 18:02.

Langley was third with 97 points in the girls Liberty race, paced by the ninthplace finish of Anna Spear (18:44).

The Republican criticized her opponent’s stand on equal pay for women, saying Bennett on average pays her female campaign workers less than their male counterparts. Comstock said she has placed women in leadership roles in her campaign and often pays them more than men.

While Bennett “uses the same old Democratic talking points,” Comstock said she well knows the her district’s people and issues.

“We don’t need another outpost of the 8th District in the 10th,” she said, referring to the solidly Democratic district formerly represented by Bennett’s ex-husband, U.S. Rep. James Moran (D-8th).

Democrat LuAnn Bennett, who runs a construction firm, said Congress is “one of the biggest drags on the economy nationwide” and has forgotten how to get things done.

“I have a good skill set and always have been able to negotiate a path forward,” she said. “I felt like I should try.”

Bennett said the country has an economic “fairness gap” and needs a national sense of community.

“It doesn’t need to be equal, but it has

to be fair,” she said. “We need to heal the fairness gap and steer back toward the middle. We need an economy that works for everyone.”

The country’s wealthiest 1 percent invest their surplus income, but middle-class people would spend theirs on things their families need, thus boosting the economy, Bennett said.

Comstock’s voting record is more conservative than she lets on and aligns with that of Donald Trump, she said.

“She doesn’t talk about her votes and I believe there’s a reason for that,” Bennett said. “We need people who are courageous and stand up for what they believe.

I’ve never seen her take a hard vote.”

Bennett said Comstock aims for “base hits,” which aren’t enough to overcome the country’s challenges.

“We need to swing for the fences,” she said. “We can do it.”

Bennett supports construction of the Bi-County Parkway and the Route 7 widening project. She is “cautiously optimistic” about Metrorail’s new Silver Line stations that are being built west of Reston, but said it would be unfortunate if the transit system had untenable delays when those stations opened.

Comstock has criticized leadershop of the Metro system but not offered any solutions, Bennett said. The federal gov-

ernment also should help pay for Metro’s operations, as 40 percent of area federal workers use the transit system, she said.

President Obama has not done enough to bolster Metrorail, she added.

While Comstock has attacked Bennett for the support she receives from organized labor representing Metro employees, the Democrat worked to dispel stereotypes about union labor. “When union work is required, you get better-quality workers and no cost overruns or delays,” Bennett said.

Bennett vowed if elected to schedule meetings promptly with all Republican caucus members. She would seek appointment to the Transportation Committee and, while acknowledging it’s a long-shot, a spot on the powerful Appropriations Committee as well.

Asked to say something nice about her opponent, Bennett said Comstock has “dedicated her life to public service” and “appears to have a lovely family.”

Comstock responded similarly, saying Bennett has a “talented group of kids.”

Transportation Notes SECOND PHASE OF SILVER LINE NOW ONE-THIRD COMPLETE: Construction

of the second phase of Metro’s Silver Line has nearly reached the one-third mark in its efforts to connect the existing transit line from Reston west into Loudoun County.

The project is being overseen by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which said “construction is speeding up all along the Dulles corridor.”

“Trackwalls are being built, bridges over environmental areas and roads are under construction, and gradings and excavations are underway,” airport officials said.

At Washington Dulles International Airport, guideways to support tracks are in place, while pouring decks for the trackbeds is almost half complete.

Construction also is underway at four of what ultimately will be six stations in the second phase: Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center and Dulles Airport.

Construction is expected to be finished in 2019, and after the project is turned over to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the first riders are expected to be on board in 2020.

FAIRFAX POLICE TO TARGET ROADS WITH HIGH RISK OF PEDESTRIAN INCIDENTS: The Fairfax County Police

Department has identified 11 areas where there has been a higher incidence of pedestrian fatal or serious injury crashes in the past five years.

Many of these crashes involve pedestrians and occurred in October and November when the days noticeably become shorter and darker, particularly between 6 and 7 a.m. or between 5 and 10 p.m., and an analysis uncovered that many of the 11 areas fall near bus stops or along bus routes.

The 11 locations identified by crime analysts are Centrewood Drive and Saint Germain Road, Centreville; Lee Jackson Memorial Highway (Route 50) and Metrotech Drive, Chantilly; Gallows Road from Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) to I66, Fairfax; Leesburg Pike (Route 7) from Patrick Henry Drive to Rio Drive, Falls Church; Little River Turnpike (Route 236) from Hummer Road to Woodland Road, Annandale; 7900 block of Heritage Drive, Annandale; 7500 block of McWhorter Place, Annandale; Backlick Road and Hechinger Drive, Springfield; Little River Turnpike (Route 236) from Lincoln Avenue to Beauregard Street, Alexandria; Lockheed Boulevard from

Fordson Avenue to Richmond Highway (Route 1), Alexandria; and the 7900, 8100, 8300, 8600 and 8700 blocks of Richmond Highway (Route 1), Alexandria.

In an effort to increase safety for both pedestrians and drivers, Fairfax police are participating in the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Street Smart traffic safety initiative. From Oct. 31 to Nov. 27, officers around the county will conduct traffic-safety education and enforcement, particularly in the targeted areas.

A forum to discuss the feasibility of a gondola-based transit system between Rosslyn and Georgetown will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. at Georgetown Theater, 1351 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., in the District of Columbia.

ZGF Architects, whose staff conducted the study, will discuss findings, with comments by Georgetown Business Improvement District president Joe Sternlieb and Rosslyn Business Improvement District president Mary-Claire Burick.
