Three of the four candidates aspiring to fill a vacant Fairfax County School Board seat weighed in on everything from budgets and a schoolrenaming controversy to bathroom rights for transgender students during an Aug. 8 debate at Great Falls Library. The first half of the forum fea-

tured remarks by candidates Michael Owens and Karen Keys-Gamarra; fellow aspirant Chris Grisafe was running behind schedule and joined them later. Candidate Sandra Allen did not attend the debate, which was held by the Great Falls Citizens Association. Moderator Matthew Haley said Allen told the group she doesn’t attend public forums. The candidates will vie in an Aug.

29 special election to fill the unexpired term of School Board member Jeannette Hough (At-Large), who resigned in late May to accompany her husband on a work assignment in Europe.
