Sign Removal: County to Take $10 Cut of Fees
A LITTLE MESSY . . . BUT DELICIOUS . . .
BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Fairfax County supervisors on Jan. 24 authorized the Department of Code Compliance to impose and collect $10 for each sign placed illegally in highway areas. Inmates with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office’s Community Labor Force since fiscal year 2014 have been collecting signs along major roadways under a March 2013 agreement between the Board of Supervisors and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The Community Labor Force picked up illegal signs from 60 roadways when the program began, and that street total had been increased to 99 by November last year. Inmates collect signs in eight-hour-long shifts Tuesdays through Thursdays. The Community Labor Force picks up about 30,000 signs per year, costing the Sheriff’s Office about $180,000 annually. Expenses include fuel, mileage, maintenance and replacement costs of two trucks, each of which is staffed by a deputy during the sign-collection shifts. The Department of Code Compliance in January 2016 began the Sign Removal Enforcement Program and last March, under the agreement with VDOT, began invoicing a $100-persign penalty. Between May and December last year, the Department of Code Compliance sent $58,900 worth of civil-penalty invoices Continued on Page 22

Vienna officials have wrestled with problems and complications associated with renovation of the Vienna Community Center for months. But now, officials say, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. Vienna officials report that the project will be “substantially complete” by August. Find full coverage inside on Page 4.
