Town officials financed 80 percent of the $350,460 project with Federal Highway Administration funds. The project was executed within the roadway’s existing right-of-way and is one of fewer than two dozen miniroundabouts nationwide, town officials said. Continued on Page 16

Vienna’s first-ever mini-roundabout at Park and Locust streets, S.E., opened to the public during the third weekend of August and motorists so far seem to be getting the hang of negotiating the circle. “I think it’s working out fine,” said Michael Gallagher, the town’s acting public-works director, adding he so far had not received any reports from police about problems with the roundabout. Nothing major has happened yet, but a brief visit to the site Aug. 22 showed some drivers still must learn how to get through the new roadway feature safely. One motorist in a red sedan drove straight over the roundabout’s mountable curb and through the intersection, as if the circle were not there at all. Another driver stopped his Audi shortly after leaving the circle, got out of his car, shook his fist and yelled at the motorist behind him, apparently after a close call. The motorist on the receiving end absorbed the abuse with a resigned look that said, “Yeah. Right. Got it. Sorry. Move on.” The town’s on-call engineer-
