Following the defeat last June of a major redevelopment proposal under the new Maple Avenue Commercial (MAC) ordinance, Vienna officials are considering a code amendment that would make it harder for protesting neighbors to scuttle such rezoning projects. Vienna Planning Commission members on March 22 heard testimony for and against the ordinance modifications and, having their own differences on what course to take, decided to hold further work sessions and continue the public hearing at a future date. Vienna Town Council members last October asked the town attorney and Planning and Zoning staff members to examine possible changes to the ordinance. The Council acted after the Vienna Market rezoning proposal – which would have built 49 townhouse-style condominiums atop 28,000 square feet of retail space and a 105-space underground parking garage at the former Marco Polo Restaurant site near Maple Avenue, W., and Pleasant Street, N.W. – was defeated on June 6, 2016, under unusual circumstances.
