The opioid-addiction crisis is taking an increasing number of lives, forcing state and local officials into action to combat it.

oin or opioid addict is – someone who is on the street, homeless, has track marks on the arms and hasn’t showered – but in reality it could be you or me,” said Lyn Tomlinson, assistant deputy director of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.

According to Fairfax County officials,

there were more than 100 drug-related deaths in the county during 2016, the most of any jurisdiction in the commonwealth.

Eighty of those deaths were from opioid overdoses, an increase of one-third from 60 such fatalities in 2015, county officials said.

Statewide, more than 1,400 people died from drug overdoses in 2016 and 1,133 of those deaths were attributable to heroin and prescription opioids.

Karen Keys-Gamarra bested three challengers Aug. 29 in a special election to fill a vacant seat on the Fairfax County School Board.

Keys-Gamarra, an attorney who lives in Oakton, will serve the unexpired term of Jeanette Hough (At-Large), who resigned in May so she could accompany her husband on an overseas work assignment.

Turnout was a fairly anemic 10.4 percent in the rainy special election, which occurred the day after Fairfax County Public Schools began fall classes.

According to unofficial tallies from the Fairfax County Office of Elections, KeysGamarra garnered 41,519 votes, or about two-thirds of the total.

Chris Grisafe came in second with 21,389 votes, followed by Michael Owens with 1,346 votes and Sandra Allen with 719 ballots.

The county’s initial vote tallies did not list absentee or provisional votes. KeysGamarra won in all nine of the county’s magisterial districts. Grisafe’s closest challenge to her came in Springfield District, where he received 3,773 votes to KeysGamarra’s 4,431.

“People seem to be aware and coming to the polls knowing who they’re going to vote for,” Keys-Gamarra said while campaigning near the polling station in the back of Fairview Elementary School in Burke.

Keys-Gamarra said she was concerned with the amount of discord on community issues.

“Unfortunately, it appears it is politically expedient to create havoc in our community discussions and I really hope to bring reconciliation to some of that,” she said. “I’m also very concerned about our teachers and wanting to make sure that they understand how valued they are.

I want to try to improve conditions for them.”

School board elections in Virginia are non-partisan, but political parties often endorse candidates. Hough had been endorsed by the Fairfax County Republican Committee when she was elected to the School Board in 2015. Keys-Gamarra obtained the county Democrats’ endorsement for the special election and Grisafe

the county GOP’s.

Special elections typically draw much smaller turnout, which has the potential to benefit parties not in the majority. Republicans hold only two of the 10 Board of Supervisors seats and their endorsees are similarly outnumbered on the School Board.

County Democrats expressed outrage earlier this summer after Hough resigned before the deadline that would have required the special election to be held concurrently with the Nov. 7 general election.

Fairfax County election officials said the special election would cost the county about $371,000.

Greeting voters during a stop at South Run RECenter in Springfield, Grisafe said he was proud he had run his campaign on the issues of academic excellence and protecting the quality of county schools.

Voters “want to make sure we’re investing our money wisely,” said Grisafe, who lives in the Penderbook area and works in the national-security field. “This is the single most significant investment we make as a community. It’s one-half of our budget. We need to make sure we’re taking care of that to the benefit of all students.”

Owens, a consultant who lives in Falls Church, campaigned on a platform of reducing class sizes and ending bullying.

“It’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience, which is a pleasant surprise,” Owens said of her campaign effort. “There were many voters who did not share my positions on the issues, but we still were able to talk about things civilly. They were open to hearing my ideas, which I really did appreciate.”

One issue that surprised Owens was the controversy over the renaming of J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church.

“I support the superintendent’s trying to move through the steps quickly and try to move us past it,” she said.

Allen, a native of Bolivia who is involved with James Madison High School’s minority-achievement program, said it was important to empower the younger generation and take the politics out of School Board decisions.

“As School Board candidates, we need to make sure that the schools are not politically driven and that teachers as well as faculty are focused only on the education and success of every student,” Allen said.

New Regional Effort Aiming to Revitalize School Lunches

With the school year off and running, a new regional initiative is aiming to change public perception about school lunches.

“Unfortunately, the narrative around school meals – one of stigma and poor quality – persists, impeding improvement in even the most proactive and innovative school food programs,” organizers said.

“Changing school food requires changing school food culture.”

Tagged “The Lunch Room Collective,” it aims to connect partners in the education, agriculture, non-profit and policymaking sectors to ensure healthy meals in schools, and that an appropriate message is sent to students about healthy choices.

It is an outreach effort of the advocacy group Real Food for Kids.

“We are excited to begin this unique partnership,” Real Food for Kids’ cofounder and chairman Jocelyn Hsu said.

“With great minds and diverse perspectives coming together . . . we anticipate finding real solutions for overcoming barriers to students enjoying nutritious meals during the school day.”

The effort includes representatives from school systems in Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun counties as well as representation from organizations in the District of Columbia.

Among the group’s initial focuses: how to better integrate food services staff with

the overall school culture, and how to address the time allotted for lunch and its impact on student wellness.

“Healthy students are our priority,” said Amy Maclosky, who heads Arlington Public Schools’ school-nutrition programs, “and we take great pride in our desire to be innovative in our approach to change the negative perception that persists in our culture.”

Maclosky is among those who has been tapped to participate in the initiative.

Her counterpart in Fairfax County Public Schools, Rodney Taylor, also is a member of the working group, as is Fairfax School Board member Ryan McElveen (at-large) and Jay Pearson, executive principal for the school system.

Real Food for Kids is a Fairfax-based nonprofit that works with school communities to elevate the quality and character of school food; develop and deliver programs that advance literacy in nutrition and health; and support students, parents and schools is building a culture of health that spreads to their homes and communities.

Our View: Don’t Read Too Much Into It, But . . .

The British call them “by-elections”: the ones that take place when a member of Parliament dies or leaves office, necessitating a special election.

And because frequently they happen when little else is occurring in U.K. politics, the punditocracy and political class tend to blow an individual result out of all proportion.

Similarly, it’s unwise to read too much into last week’s special election for Fairfax County School Board. As the disclaimers for investment opportunities often read: Past performance is no indication of future outcomes. But Democrats certainly came away with reasons to smile, while Republicans have cause for concern.

School Board races officially are nonpartisan, but political parties skirt the rule by “endorsing” candidates rather than nominating them. And in the Aug. 29 election to replace atlarge board member Jeannette Hough, Democratic endorsee Karen Keys-Gamarra trounced Republican contender Chris Grisafe. (Two other candidates were non-factors.)

There are multiple reasons Democrats fared well, starting with their candidate. Keys-Gamarra ran what we’d call a lowrisk race, rarely going out on a limb or challenging Democratic Party orthodoxy. But she also made no major blunders, giving her a leg up and allowing the county’s (largely neutered but still vocal) public-sector unions to rally behind her.

Republicans, starting with Hough, apparently thought that timing the resignation to trigger an election at the end of summer, rather than in concert with the Nov. 7 general

election, might help their prospects. Apparently not; Fairfax students already were back in school, so voter turnout was higher than it might have been at the same time in previous years when families were still on vacation. Grisafe ended up getting beaten throughout all nooks and crannies of Fairfax’s 399 square miles. Even in reliably Republican ones.

This is the first vote many Fairfax residents have been able to cast since the victory of Donald Trump last November.

Given that Fairfax voters gave just 29 percent of their ballots to our current president, one can imagine many in the electorate were intent on sending a message this time around.

Democrats this year have to pick up a whopping 17 seats (statewide) to take control of the lower house of the General Assembly. Even die-hards are not expecting that to happen.

But if they can cobble together a pickup of 10 seats, suddenly the possibility of a Democratic majority in coming years does not look so far-fetched.

We’ve been down this path before, where Democrats say they’re on the verge of big gains statewide in the House of Delegates, only to see the effort peter out by Election Day. But the times, they are a’changing, as the song goes, something that should strike at least a degree of terror in the hearts of Virginia Republicans.

Not to mention what a major Democratic majority in Fairfax could mean in the statewide races. Republicans don’t need to carry Fairfax to win statewide, but they do have to at least be competitive. That may be tough sledding for them.

Higher Turnout a Step in the Right Direction Editor: The good news is that turnout for the Fairfax County School Board special election (held, inexplicably, on Aug. 29) was nearly twice that of other recent special elections. The bad news is that turnout was still only 10 percent of eligible voters.

Maintaining the strength of Fairfax County schools should be of concern to everyone affected by our local economy,

not just families with school-age children. Employment opportunities, property values and the business climate are all interrelated with the quality of our public schools.

And it’s not just School Board elections that affect school quality. In November, Virginians will elect a new governor and the entire state House of Delegates. The amount and distribution of resources for public education com-

Labor Day Time to Honor Unions Editor: Labor Day, to me, is a day to celebrate workers. In my involvement with the labor movement, I have appreciated the many benefits my family has gained.

I was a single mother raising two kids many years ago. I was blessed to be working under a union-bargained contract. We were by no means wealthy, but my good wages and benefits provided a middle-class life for my family. My kids were able to benefit from having food on the table, clothes (on sale but stylish) on their backs and a roof over their heads.

I could provide them with the little extras: dance classes, athletic teams, movies, video games and fun trips.

My children are now adults. My son

is a union member who also is involved with the labor movement. My daughter works at a food bank that provides that little extra help to working families in need.

I am proud of my children and their continued effort to help working families. We celebrate the hard work our previous union leaders accomplished to provide working wages, health benefits and a pension to the working families through the years.

Labor Day is a day to remember the sacrifices those union leaders made, sometimes with their lives, to lift workers up.

Put Focus on Issues That Matter the Most Editor: The Sun Gazette’s Aug. 31 editorial [“Our View: Put the Focus on the Big Picture”] was very well-written, and I agree with the content. We need to reconsider our priorities.

Getting rid of historical monuments and changing the names of schools is ridiculous. Of course we made mistakes in our country’s history, but removing the statues, etc., is not the answer.

Renaming J.E.B. Stuart High School will cost a million dollars. I am sure the teachers would prefer a pay raise with that money.

McLean Community Center’s Governing Board will hold two meetings in September aimed at refining the center’s fiscal 2019 budget, and is seeking community input.

Comments will be taken at the two meetings – slated for 7:30 p.m. each night on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and on Wednesday, Sept. 27 – at the center’s temporary administrative office, located at 6631 Old Dominion Drive.

GREAT FALLS TO HOST REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY: The annual Great

Falls Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Monday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Great Falls Freedom Memorial, located behind the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike.

The event will honor the lives of six Great Falls residents who died in the 9/11 attacks, as well as all those impacted by the event.

The keynote speaker will be Great Falls resident Jim Roberts, president of Radio America and founder of the American Veterans Center.

The community is invited. Due to limited seating, attendees are encouraged to bring portable chairs.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to the library.

McLean Project for the Arts’ temporary location – MPA@ChainBridge – will be formally dedicated as the “Bullock Hitt Gallery” during an exhibition opening on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The renaming honors recent contributions by Matthew Bullock and Todd Hitt to support the arts group.

“Now more than ever, we need to step up and support our creative organizations,” said Hitt, president of the global alternative asset management firm Kiddar Capital. “The arts are an essential cornerstone of our culture, and enrich all of our lives.”

Bullock, chief marketing officer of Walnut Industries, said his support of the initiative would hopefully serve as “a vehicle to encourage youth to channel the power of innovative and creative solutions in facing complex challenges.”

The name will remain on the gallery for the two years the McLean Project for the Arts occupies the space. The arts organization will return to its previous August home at the McLean Community Center following the renovation of that facility.

The contributions by Bullock and Hitt helped cover the cost of converting the retail space (which previously house an Alcohol Beverage Control store) for use as a gallery, along with staffing costs.

“The funding and opening of this new space was a true community collaboration, and we could not have done it without the support of our committed and generous partners,” said Lori Carbonneau, executive director of the organization.

Industry Issues: Technology, Inventory and Competition

Keeping up with technology, maintaining sufficient inventory, competition from nontraditional participants and profitability are among the biggest challenges for real estate firms, according to the National Association of Realtor® 2017 Profile of Real Estate Firms.

Conversely, for a third year in a row, the survey found the vast majority of firms have an optimistic outlook for the future of the industry’s growth.

Although expectations have slightly decreased from last year’s survey, firms remain confident and expect profitability from all real estate activities to increase or stay the same over the next year.

The report is based on a survey of firm executives who are members of the National Association of Realtors and provides insight into the business characteristics and activity of firms, benefits and education provided to agents and outlook for the future.

Real estate firms are sensing strengthened competition this year, as 50 percent of firms expect competition to increase in the next year from nontraditional market participants, up from 43 percent in 2016.

Half of firms expect competition during the same period to increase from virtual firms (up from 47 percent in 2016), while only 15 percent expect competition will increase from traditional brick-and-mortar firms.

According to the survey, 60 percent of commercial firms expect profitability from all real estate activities to increase in the next year, compared to 64 percent in 2016.

Residential real estate firms are more optimistic compared to commercial firms; 62 percent of firms expect profitability to improve, compared to 65 percent in 2016.

The typical residential real estate firm’s brokerage sales volume was $6.2 million in 2016 (down from $6.3 in 2015), while the typical commercial real estate firm’s brokerage sales volume was $4.0 million in 2016 (down from $4.5 in 2015).

The survey states that 43 percent of firms reported they are actively recruiting sales agents in 2017, down from 47 percent in 2016. This is more common among residential firms (49 percent) than commercial firms (29 percent), the survey found.

Leave time in your weekend to visit Harmony Row, to peruse and purchase holistic products so you can take the calm home, and Wellness Way, where you can sign up for individual sessions with well-known alternative healers and wellness practitioners. This is your chance to meet with an Angelic Communicator, an Ayurvedic Astrologer (be sure to find out your time of birth for this session) or a Psychic Medium. The YogaFest’s Chef is Matt Warshaw of Pure Perfections Catering in Herndon, who will be preparing vegetarian and vegan options featuring locallysourced produce. The bracelet includes breakfast, lunch and dinner with healthy snacks and infused waters in between.

A sample lunch menu starts with a garden-fresh salad bar and fresh fruit salad, Beet Carpaccio with goat cheese (served on the side) as a first course, and an entrée of Vegetarian Fried Brown Rice with Roasted Bean Sprout Tofu accompanied by steamed greens with Quinoa.

The meal is served with a selection of infused waters and tea.

T

he heart of the NoVa Wellness & YogaFest Retreat is the practice of yoga - as many kinds and variations of yoga as there are hours in the day.

The weekend features yoga classes taught by registered instructors each with a minimum 200 RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) hour training. Classes range from National Yoga-circuit couple Andrea Boyd and Jeffrey Cohen’s emotionally charged “Born to be Wild” class, to Alexandria’s Kristi Schwickerath, of PIES Fitness Yoga Studio, with “Yoga for Optimal Wellness” to the Reston-based Yoga 4 All Bodies’ Leanne Cusumano Roque’s “Stand on Your Own Two Feet,” which focuses on Iyengar Yoga.

Organized into three areas at Morven Park, the classes, which run concurrently, allow participants to map out a schedule for themselves or simply go with the flow.

The Calm Yoga Grove, under stately and historic trees, features a lineup of classes that embrace slow and calm movement, ideal for those new to yoga or older attendees, while across the park the Active Movement Tent inspires balance, energy and even play. The Blended Tent is home to meditation, healing workshops, children’s yoga, laughter yoga and more.

It’s the Blended Tent where Amalia Colyer will conduct a special workshop for teens, “Together Let’s De-Stress.”

Colyer created the session based on her growing De-Stress for Success (D4S) program to meet the needs of area teens who, she says, “are the children of high-achievers, pushed to be the best and set goals that aren’t really comfortable for them.”

The workshop will give teens modalities and techniques for combatting stress and anxiety in the moment – in the classroom, on the field, and in social situations.

Shelly Pentony’s workshop, “Yoga for Life’s Traumas, Large and Small” on Saturday will also give adult participants useful tools to apply to everyday life. Pentony, a trauma-informed yoga instructor, uses body-based treatments to address the physical manifestations of experiencing any kind of trauma, from surviving abuse to witnessing violence, to anxiety

caused by change. The workshop features sequencing designed to release stored up trauma so it can be better managed.

“There’s such heartache in our Northern Virginia communities,” Pentony reflects. “But everything we need to heal our trauma is already inside of us. Whatever your symptom, yoga offers a solution, a way to balance it.”

YogaFest Founder Miriam Nasuti’s hope is that those who’ve experienced loss, such as a painful divorce or loss of a loved one, and especially the sudden loss of a child, will find peace within this meaningful workshop.

Colyer and Pentony join dozens of instructors for YogaFest, many like them, from this area. Other local yogis and workshop leaders include Martha Calihan, a Certified Functional Medicine practitioner and Board-Certified Physician from Leesburg, Martha Banks-Harold from PIES Fitness Yoga Studio in Alexandria, Donna Reuss of Body n’ Brain Yoga Tai Chi in Alexandria, and Stevie Bolger of Beloved Yoga in Great Falls and Reston. The local connections mean those trying new classes at YogaFest can keep up their practice with yogis they’ve met, or attend class at their studios, after the weekend. And that’s exactly what the retreat team had in mind.

“We are navigating a world that’s really, really busy. Yin is a balance to that fast pace,” explains yogi Turi Nevin-Tukel of Turiya Yoga + Wellness in Berryville. “YogaFest is a chance for absolutely everyone to utilize yoga postures and mindfulness to slow the mind and body, and to release and relax.”

Vienna/Oakton Notes NEW VIENNA INITIATIVE AIMS TO PROVIDE ONLINE, APP ACCESS TO TOWN GOVERNMENT: The Vienna town govern-

ment is introducing a new tool to promote citizen engagement.

“Help, Vienna” is a Web site portal and mobile app that allows town residents and others to report concerns and submit service requests to the town on a 24-hour basis.

The intent is to provide “enhanced, accessible, user-friendly ways for citizens to engage with the town and share concerns,” said Tony Mull, the town government’s information-technology director.

“For example, if someone notices that there’s a new pothole on their neighborhood street, they now can take a picture and submit a work request to the town with just a couple of clicks on their smartphone,” Mull said.

Service requests that can be submitted via the system include animal issues, traffic and traffic-signal concerns, construction or street-maintenance issues, water leaks or sewer backups, trash or recycling questions, and more.

The Web portal is accessible from the government’s home page at www.viennava.gov. It also can be downloaded for free from the Apple Store or Google Play.

To download, search for the Click2Report app by Tyler Munis. Once the app is downloaded, open it, click the settings button, and select “Vienna, VA” from the

list of available municipalities.

“Most of us have access to our cell phones all the time,” says Mull, “so ‘Help, Vienna’ should be an effective tool for residents to communicate concerns and service requests to the town at any time at their convenience.”

VIENNA TO HOST QUARTERLY RECYCLING DAY: The Vienna town govern-

ment’s next quarterly recycling day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northside Property Yard, 600 Mill St., N.E. At the most recent event, held in June, the town government collected 100 gallons of waste oil, 13 gallons of antifreeze, four car batteries and five tons of electronics.

(Car parts, paint, insecticides, gasoline, cleaners and other hazardous materials are not accepted as part of the initiative.)

A Few Changes Might Improve Fall Campaign With the fall high school sports season under way, here are a few ideas and suggestions that might make the campaign better in some ways.

“It’s a situation where we are going to have to make tackles in the open field to be successful this season,” Henry said.

The game certainly began well for the Oakton Cougars. On the strength of turnovers, FOOTBALL three one an interception in the end zone, the visitors led the West Springfield Spartans, 7-0, in the second quarter and were playing tough defense.

Earlier in the game, Marcus Cruz had an interception in the end zone for Oakton, and Jacob Mink had an interception to stop a scoring threat.

In addition to West Springfield’s first touchdown and interception return for a TD, its other scores covered plays of 46, 30 and 11 yards.

For the night, Oakton gained just 195 yards. Ryan Harris had four catches for 60 yards and rushed for 38 more. Cole ran for 51 yards, had two catches and 61 yards in kickoff returns.

n With varsity football games lasting closer to three hours than two these days, why not start Friday night contests 30 minutes to an hour earlier?

Games begin at 7 p.m. now.

Also regarding football, why can’t there be one featured public-school game of the week played on a Thursday night or Saturday afternoon so more people could see more games?

That also might be a money-maker.

As for those private-school Saturday games on fields with no lights, they should all start at 1 p.m. so natural light doesn’t become an issue once daylight-savings time ends. n All high schools should return to using full-time athletic hotlines and keep them regularly updated. Many schools have discontinued that phone service, directing information-seekers to the athletic Web sites instead, which often aren’t updated in nearly a timely-enough manner. n As for those high school athletic Web sites and Twitter accounts, all could be used much more effectively by posting updates and game and event scores as they occur, not hours later or the next morning, which unfortunately is too often the case. n Once the postseason arrives, if possible, the various district and region public-school playoff competitions should be held on alternate dates, again allowing more to watch the events. n Ease up on the loud music often played during every break in action at many types of games. Either eliminate the music or turn it down. n Only varsity football games should be played on Friday nights.

Holding other events, like field hockey and volleyball, on those evenings, cheats those contests of fans.

Those are just a few ideas for the fall season, good or bad.

Flint Hill Team Returns Two 1,000-Yard Running Backs DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

With some key returning starters and the addition of a talented new starting quarterback, the Flint Hill are FOOTBALL PREVIEW Huskies primed to continue their perennial place this fall as one of the top football teams in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Huskies open the 2017 high school season Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in Fairfax against the host Paul VI Catholic Panthers (1-0).

Flint Hill finished second in the MAC with a 3-1 record last fall after winning the title in 2015, and finishing first or second in many previous campaigns.

“We are cautiously optimistic because we played pretty well in some of our scrimmages,” Flint Hill coach Tom Verbanic said. “We have the ability to be pretty good.”

Returning at running back for Flint Hill are junior Jordan Houston and senior Mark Lewis, each of whom already has run for near 2,000 yards in a season in their careers for the Huskies.

is healthy this fall. Lewis filled in as his replacement last season. Lewis also will play wide receiver this fall, along with senior returners Jamarian Hawkins, junior Trey Rucker and sophomore Justice Ellison.

“We have some good skill-position returners coming back,” Verbanic said.

Leading the offense will be junior starting quarterback Miles Thompson, who is a transfer from Woodberry Forest.

“He can run and he can throw,” Verbanic said. “We are glad to have him. He makes us better.”

Some other key players for Flint Hill will be sophomore fullback/linebacker Jaylin Hertz, tight end/linebackers Reagan Gray (senior) and Elijah Wasson (sophomore), junior lineman Roman Chaudhry (junior), senior lineman Xavier Formey, junior tight end/ lineman Joe Worman, and kicker/punter Matt McClements (senior) and Justin Duenkel (junior).

All of those players will play on defense as well.

Between January and September last year, Fairfax County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel reported 369 uses of naloxone to counteract opioid overdoses. Across the state during that same time frame, emergency-department visits for heroin overdoses increased by 89 percent compared with the same ninemonth period in 2015.

Opioids such as morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, tramadol, fentanyl and methadone often are prescribed to relieve pain. The substances also produce euphoric effects in the brain.

Some opioids are considerably stronger than others and pose deadly heath risks if misused, officials said. Fentanyl, which helps manage pain for people suffering Stage 4 cancer, is 10 times stronger than heroin, county officials said.

Fentanyl caused 5,343 overdose deaths nationwide in 2014 and that number shot up to 13,882 in 2015, authorities said. A lethal dose of pure fentanyl is only the size of a few grains of salt, they said.

In other instances, people hold parties featuring strong drugs and revive themselves with Narcan, which generically is known as naloxone, she said.

Narcan and naloxone are available at pharmacies without a prescription and obtaining them does not trigger interest from law enforcement, Tomlinson said.

The Community Services Board encourages people who obtain those substances to learn to recognize the signs that someone is overdosing. For example, if a person’s breathing is rattling, it may not be snoring but rather a sign their breathing is shutting down, she said.

The agency also conducts publicoutreach events and encourages the safe disposal of prescription medication. The Community Services Board will hold a “Recovery Resource Open House” on Sept. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Merrifield Center, 8221 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive.

Gov. McAuliffe announced Aug. 24 that the 2017 Governor’s Datathon would address Virginia’s ongoing opioid-addiction crisis.

During the datathon, 15 teams composed of people from higher education, state and local government, non-profit groups and private industry will spend two days developing solutions to the crisis. The teams will present their solutions Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. at the Library of Virginia in Richmond and the top three teams will receive awards.

“Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in Virginia, outpacing deaths from gun violence and motor vehicle accidents,” McAuliffe said in a media statement. “This epidemic affects families and communities across the commonwealth and we must approach this crisis from every angle.”

Fairfax County Notes BAN ON FEEDING DEER GOES INTO EFFECT: The annual statewide prohibi-

tion on feeding deer kicked in Sept. 1, and in Fairfax will run through April.

The Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries enforces the ban. Feeding deer can unnaturally increase deer population, damage habitats, increase deer-human conflicts and promote disease transmission, state officials said.

“It is clear the negative consequences of feeding deer outweigh the benefits,” state officials said.

CHESAPEAKE BAY PLAN WINS STATE APPROVAL: The Virginia Department

of Environmental Quality has reviewed and approved the Fairfax County government’s updated plan to reduce the maximum daily load of pollutants into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Final approval came Aug. 15.

Under the plan, Fairfax County expects to be able to reduce nitrogren outputs by 60.4 percent, phosphorous output by 115.3 percent and suspended-solids output by 58.3 percent, officials said.

NEW WORK BY SYMPHONY TO CELEBRATE COUNTY’S ANNIVERSARY:

The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra will premiere a new composition on Saturday, Sept. 16, that was commissioned to mark Fairfax County’s 275th anniversary.

The orchestra approached the county government to find a way to participate in this year’s anniversary celebrations, and Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova commissioned the new work, titled “Resolutions.”

Mark Camphouse, a George Mason University faculty composer, wrote the seven-minute piece.

“We are delighted to open our season with the world premiere of Professor Camphouse’s new work in honor of the

FSO’s 60 years and in celebration of our great county’s 275th anniversary,” Jonathan Kerr, Fairfax Symphony Orchestra’s executive director, said in a statement.

According to Camphouse, he gave the new work the name “Resolutions,” as a “very intentional double meaning relating to both musical resolutions (harmonic dissonance resolving to consonance) and political resolutions containing fundamental American principles of human freedom found in the influential Fairfax Resolves,” which were written in 1774 by Fairfax County resident George Mason.

The new work will be performed by the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra under the direction of music director Christopher Zimmerman in concert on Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. at the GMU Center for the Arts.
