FAIRFAX TRANSPORTATION PLANNER SALUTED: The Fairfax County Trans-

portation Advisory Commission (TAC) on Dec. 5 honored Senior Transportation Planner Martha Elena Coello with the 2016 Transportation Achievement Award, recognizing her efforts to enhance the quality of transportation in Fairfax County.

Coello began her career with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation in 2007 with a focus on transit-oriented development planning and implementation. She served in various roles promoting and implementing transit use, transit-oriented development and multimodal-transportation projects in Fairfax County.

As a member of the Tysons Urban Core Planning Team, Coello coordinated the transit and transportation infrastructure to transform the Tysons Urban Area into a multi-modal transportation hub.

She was directly involved in planning more than 100 million square feet of mixed-use transit-oriented development with a goal of providing infrastructure

for 100,000 new residents and 200,000 new jobs by 2050.

“Martha considers the community as a whole – where people go and how they get there,” said Jeffrey Parnes, chair of the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission. “Of note is her ability to work with all the project partners to provide well-coordinated and integrated transportation systems for the region.”

Coello also worked to identify new bicycle and pedestrian links to eight new Metrorail stations in the county, identifying road and station access improvements, and coordinating bus-infrastructure elements with the Fairfax Connector bus system.

“Martha’s service to the county has been instrumental in advancing our transportation goals and objectives,” said FCDOT Special Projects Division Chief Mark Canale. “This has had a direct and lasting positive impact on improving the quality of the transportation infrastructure in the Fairfax County.”

Coello recently received national recognition by Mass Transit Magazine as one of the Top 40 Under 40 transit professionals. In addition, she was selected to attend the Urban Land Institute’s Regional Land Use Leadership Institute Program, graduating this year after a nine-month program.

of America of Northern Virginia, is working this holiday season to live up to its founding principle of “Never Again Shall One Generation of Veterans Abandon Another” by providing essential funding for three chapter veteran-assistance programs.

The Holiday Gift Program provided gift credit cards totaling $3,200 to 34 veterans and their families in the Veterans Administration Supportive Housing (VASH) program, a partnership with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The effort assists homeless veterans and their families in transitioning from homelessness to normalcy with affordable and stable lodging.

The Northern Virginia VASH team currently serves veterans in Fairfax, Arlington, and Prince William counties; the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church; and the towns of Herndon and Vienna. Case managers identified veterans

and families in dire financial need for the holidays.

For the sixth year, the chapter fulfilled the Santa List for two wounded-warrior families at a local military hospital. The chapter funded one family with a $600 grant, while a member’s neighbor agreed to fund the Santa List for the second family.

At the December board meeting, four “Just-in-Time” grants were approved for a total of $1,987 to cover emergency financial crises of local veterans, bringing to more than $15,000 the total expended during the year through the program.

Panelists Urge Women to Forge Own Paths

Sheila Johnson admires Millennials and wishes she were one of them.

“This rising generation is better-educated, more diverse and open-minded than any that have come before,” said Johnson, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television and founder and CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts. “Today’s young people have pushed for change on a host of important issues, from sustainability to social justice, gay marriage, gender equality, even the notion of gender itself.”

Johnson spoke Dec. 1 at “Women in Leadership: How the Next Generation Is Disrupting Businesses,” a forum hosted by the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner.

Millennials are starting more businesses and doing so earlier in their careers.

During the most recent two years, female entrepreneurship has grown at double the rate of men’s, Johnson said.

“I’m inspired by the young ones, by their critical thinking, their creativity, their confidence, their social confidence and their work ethic,” she said.

Johnson told how as a child she had left the Girl Scouts when her troop leader made a racist comment. During elementary school, teachers frequently sent Johnson to the principal’s office for talking.

“That’s just pretty typical, isn’t it,” she asked. “Boys act out. They make noise, they pal around and they’re more likely to speak when they’ve been called on. Meanwhile, girls get praised for being neat, gentle and well-behaved. Even when they have something bold to say, they raise their hand and politely wait their turn.”

These habits condition people to assume that society’s disrupters are male.

“If you’re not pushing up against the boundaries, you’re unlikely to be discovering new horizons,” Johnson said. “And if

you’re not out there making noise, you’re unlikely to be making history.”

Johnson encouraged women to surround themselves with the right people, including ones with different perspectives, and avoid “energetic vampires” who drain people’s lives and bank accounts. She also told the group to ignore people who would undermine their confidence.

“It’s good to be afraid. If you’re never afraid, you’re never really testing your own limits,” she said. “There will always be people who are all too eager to tell you why you shouldn’t try. They’ll claim you’re too young or you’re too old or too inexperienced or too different to succeed.”

Susan Tynan, founder and CEO of Framebridge, then moderated a discussion with four Millennial-era business leaders.

Millennials have different mind sets and are changing old ways of doing busi-

ness, the speakers said.

The generation is keen on having experiences and adding value to whatever they undertake. But Millennials face many challenges, including crippling student debt and an unstable work world, they

said.

“The paths that were once safe aren’t safe for our generation anymore,” said Clara Sieg, partner and founding member of Revolution Ventures. Sieg advised the audience to work hard and hone their expertise, but not conform to what their predecessors had done.

“Don’t let go of the specialness of who you are,” she said.

Panelists said they exercised to keep fit and expunge stress, and they did not downplay the costs of success.

“I’m lucky to have found something it’s been worth unbalancing my life for,” said Stacey Ferreira, CEO and co-founder of Forge.

Panelists gave practical and personal advice on detecting which passions could be turned into satisfying careers.

“It’s the thing I wake up thinking about and go to bed thinking about,” Ferreira said.

For Angela Luna, founder and CEO of humanitarian fashion brand ADIFF, a sense of time stopping usually indicates a worthwhile activity.

A personal compliment from someone she admired set Katarina Famoso, chef de cuisine at Kapnos Kouzina, on her career course.

Her grandmother, who had been diagnosed with cancer, observed Famoso preparing a meal and told her it was like watching an artist at work.

Famoso acknowledged the restaurant industry is notorious for sexual harassment and said she has a zero-tolerance policy for it.

Asked about handling fear, Ferreira urged a sense of perspective.

“Whatever I’m feeling is temporary,” she tells herself in difficult situations.

“The sun will continue to rise and set.”

A little modesty and self-awareness don’t hurt, either.

“Nobody’s thinking about you as much as you are,” Sieg said.

Vienna Council Honors One of Its Former Members BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Before former Vienna Planning Commission and Vienna Town Council member Emil Attanasi moves out of state, Mayor Laurie DiRocco honored him at the Council’s Dec. 11 meeting.

“He has had such a positive and longlasting impact on the town and the Vienna community,” said the mayor, who presented Attanasi with a commemorative plaque. “He is hard-working and detail-oriented – probably one of the most detail-oriented I’ve known on the Planning Commission.”

The Town Council appointed Attanasi to the Vienna Planning Commission on Nov. 7, 1983, and he served through July 1, 2010.

pearing before the commission, knew the town code thoroughly, always did his homework on every agenda item and deliberated thoughtfully with fellow commissioners and town staff, DiRocco said.

“He was always looking out for what I thought was the best interests of the town,” she said.

Attanasi worked on five of the town’s comprehensive plans, which are updated every five years, DiRocco said. In addition to serving multiple terms as Planning Commission chairman, he led studies on parking in the Church Street corridor and prepared numerous reports and presentations for the Town Council, she said.

Attanasi also was active on development issues outside the town, including ones in Tysons and the MetroWest development just south of Vienna. He was a mentor to DiRoc-

co and others who served on the Planning Commission and “set a really high bar for decorum, thoroughness and collaboration,” the mayor said.

Attanasi and his wife, Diana, who have lived in Vienna for more than four decades, soon will move to Pennsylvania to be near their daughters, DiRocco said.

“We will miss you greatly,” she told him.

“I wish you much success in your new home and I will try not to tell them what a great planning commissioner you are.”

Originally from Union, N.J., Attanasi worked as a senior economist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ Still Resonates with Audiences WILLIAM SENKUS

We all know how this one goes: the play starts with a brawl establishes the fierce rivalry among the Montague and Capulet families. Later on, a Montague boy named Ro‘CAPPIES’ meo falls for JuREVIEW liet, a Capulet, at a party, creating our conflict. The family rivalry boils to the point of Romeo’s banishment, Juliet’s faked death and, finally, the actual deaths of the two star-crossed lovers.

“Romeo and Juliet” is a story that is familiar to most theater patrons cross the world. Written by Shakespeare, derived from Arthur Brooke’s “The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet,” the show was included in the First Quarto version of Shakespeare’s works in 1597 and has been performed internationally ever since.

Bishop O’Connell High School was faced with a familiar task to all who put on a popular Shakespeare play: What will be unique about our rendition?

It was decided upon that the play was going to be set around the 1950s, where jackets – leather and varsity alike – and long, bobbed hair reigned supreme.

A beautiful tapestry hung behind the scene that seemed to pay homage to another famous Fifties play based on Romeo and Juliet (Stephen Sondheim’s

What really highlighted the period change were the props, which were well executed by Katharine Pham and Natalie Archer, and their ability evoke a quick comprehension in the artistic choice.

For instance, the trash cans that were scattered about for certain scenes were the

large, silver-type that were commonplace in the era. Trash cans have since become more practical and made of plastic, but the probable recognition of this evolution brought about the usage of the silver trash cans that really helped set the scene.

The extra mile, taken by the props team, really paid off and was able to high-

light the artistic choice to move the play to the 1950s.

It just goes to show that it is the smaller details that tend to have the largest impact in relaying a message.

Our View: Find Deeper Reasons for Addiction It perhaps is a sign of the times that, when Fairfax County police reported six overdose deaths in the county during the first week of December, the public reaction seemed to be something akin to a collective shrug of the shoulders.

It is, to use a phrase we don’t particularly like but is appropriate here, the “new normal” – with more than 100 such overdoses countywide through the first 11 months of the year.

Those first-week-in-December deaths were spread around the county – McLean, Clifton, Fairfax, Fairfax Station – and while the victims were congregated in a relatively narrow age span (22 to 34), these days, overdoses are claiming victims from their teens to their geriatric years.

The phrase being bandied about in the media, by politicians and elsewhere is the “opioid epidemic.” Although much akin to the word “cancer,” it has many different meanings with many different causes and effects.

Some in the community find themselves addicted to painkillers after overprescriptions by physicians; others are out for a hoped-for release from emotional pain; some just are aiming for a good time.

Consider this situation, related to us by a longtime practitioner in the addiction-treatment field and, apparently, all too common: • A student goes off to college, but as sometimes happens, things don’t work out, and he/she ends up back at home, with little or nothing to do.

• To ease the boredom, the young person turns to the easiest place to find release: high-school kids living in the neighborhood, who have easy accessibility of everything up to and including heroin at their local schools. (Don’t delude yourself that any local schools are havens from such opportunities.)

“This is not the heroin of the 1970s – it’s 800 times stronger,” said Debby Simpson Taylor, senior vice president and executive director of Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic, who has watched drug pandemics ebb and flow in the region since the early 1970s.

(It’s a rather sad commentary that we’d be pining for the “good ol’ days” where heroin was far less potent than today, but that’s where we appear to be.)

While much of the focus in the local area is to triage the problem – addressing those at death’s door or close to it – there is a far bigger question at play. Simply put: What is causing middle-class-and-higher residents living in a community, insulated from most of the economic stresses of less fortunate areas of the nation, to self-medicate themselves into a stupor?

Nobody seems to have an answer, and those we hear (among them: school is just to darn stressful for teens these days) seem more likely to be masking something far more seriously wrong with some people in all segments of society.

Until we get to the bottom of that problem – both on an individual-by-individual basis and collectively as a community – it’s likely the numbers of fatal overdoses will continue to rise. And that the shrugging of shoulders will continue.

Why Isn’t Comstock Defending Constituents?

Editor: Two letters printed Dec. 14 justified U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock’s vote in favor of the Republican tax plan on the basis that it “was for common good” and “puts country first.”

While there are certain elements in the GOP tax plan that are good for the country as a whole (reducing/simplifying corporate taxation, simplifying individual taxation), there are critical elements designed to benefit specific populations rather than the country as a whole.

Bipartisan analysis indicates this plan will result in a massive transfer of wealth from middle- and upper-middle class families to the very wealthy, and

from “blue” states to “red” states (mainly due to restrictions on state/local tax deductions).

It has been argued that areas with lower local taxes have been “subsidizing” those with high local taxes, but the exact opposite is true: those high-cost areas are the major generators of the U.S. economy and already pay in far more in federal taxes than they receive back in government spending.

States with low local taxes are already the primary beneficiaries of federal largesse.

In their desperate attempt to rush through tax legislation by year-end, the Republicans put together a hodgepodge that will have significant adverse im-

pacts on millions of families.

In this rushed, chaotic horse-trading process, it was Rep. Comstock’s role to defend the interests of her constituents. Her district is in the cross-hairs of the wealth-transfer provisions that will harm middle- and upper-middle-class families. She failed miserably, as evidenced by the final product.

Numerous members of Congress from similarly affected districts in New York, New Jersey and California voted against the bill, but Rep. Comstock did not have the backbone to stand up for her constituents and simply threw us under the bus.

Like tiny amoebas multiplying and slowly inching their way, developers have shown great interest and are actively planning to work their way into our community, section by section.

In case you are wondering what happened to the earlier plan to develop high-density, multi-use buildings in

downtown McLean (our new “Main Street”), that plan is still on the back burner waiting to resurface in the near future. Several other areas are also being proposed for development, the most immediate of which is a six-story condo building with a four-story parking garage directly behind the Chipotle building, to be built on the existing parking area.

We need to protect our precious community from being the developers’ dream. We chose to live in McLean be-

cause it is an oasis. We live in the eye of a hurricane – surrounding us is relentless building, unbearable traffic and high-rises blocking our skyscape.

Stay informed. Talk with your neighbors, many have no clue about the proposed developments. The McLean Citizens Association Web site is a good source of information.

We need to take immediate action before we lose McLean to urban sprawl.

MCA OKs Concept for 2018 ‘Hometown Heroes’ Event BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) next year will hold a “McLean Hometown Heroes” event to raise money on behalf of the McLean Community Foundation.

Led by MCA’s Membership Committee, the effort’s primary hurdle will be finding a well-known and noteworthy local person – likely an athlete – who would be willing to participate in the kickoff endeavor and spur others to take part.

In addition to raising funds that the foundation could award as grants, the event would raise MCA’s profile in the local area and “promote a sense of community and pride in McLean,” according to the supportive resolution passed Dec. 6 by the association’s board.

The event’s admission fees would be contributed to the foundation and organizers might allow part of those moneys to be designated for donors’ preferred recipients.

The MCA board has yet to decide how much the group will contribute toward the event. MCA president Dale Stein suggested perhaps $1,000, but board member Darren Ewing, noting that the associa-

tion’s reserves are more than $30,000, suggested that contribution should be larger.

The shindig’s costs, mostly related to renting the venue, likely will be covered by co-sponsors or from part of the admission fees.

“McLean Hometown Heroes” still is in its embryonic stage and MCA’s Membership Committee will notify the group’s board about progress being made on the event or deviations occurring from the original plan.

The MCA board passed the resolution in favor of the event by a wide margin, with only board members (and former MCA presidents) Rob Jackson and Tom Brock voting nay.

“It takes our focus away from the mission,” Jackson said of the fund-raiser.

“This is going to be incredibly time-consuming. We’ve got more important issues to work on.”

MCA created what initially was the McLean Citizens Foundation in May 1978 in order for that group to award grants to non-profit organizations. The group, which changed its name to the McLean Community Foundation in 2008, has given out nearly $1.5 million in grants, including $66,375 to 13 non-profits in fiscal year 2017.

BUSINESS HONORED FOR EFFORTS AT SUSTAINABILITY: The Vienna Com-

munity Enhancement Commission on Dec. 11 honored seven businesses for their innovative and money-saving ideas as part of the first-ever Vienna Sustainability Challenge.

Launched last spring by the commission, the initiative certifies companies that use sustainable products and institute policies that improve the public’s quality of life, town officials said.

“These businesses have implemented various sustainability practices in their organizations,” said commission member Desiree DiMauro. “We wanted to really highlight what a great job they’re doing and how they get a win-win both for the environment as well as for their bottom line with these practices.”

Businesses aiming to be certified by the program achieved a required number of points from green practices they undertook as part of their operations.

Honorees included: • Caboose Brewing Co., which bakes house-made crackers from its spent grain or donates the grain to local farms. The brewery and restaurant buys supplies from local farms and encourages customers to use the nearby Washington & Old Dominion Regional Trail.

• Caffè Amouri, which installed bicycle racks for its customers and workers. The cafe also consolidates its deliveries for maximum efficiency and has implemented a robust recycling program. The business has received the Virginia Green Restaurant of the Year Award as well, DiMauro said.

• Cycle Chi, which uses reusable towels and rechargeable batteries at its facility and has reduced the company’s use of office paper.

• Joanne Ehreth Burke CPA PLLC, which installed higher-quality insulation in the firm’s attic and basement crawl

space and uses LED light bulbs.

Burke, who co-chairs the Community Enhancement Commission, runs the business from her home.

“She’s a great example of what can be done, even if you don’t have office space,” DiMauro said.

• Purple Onion Catering Co., which has cut back on its office-paper use and buys supplies in bulk, to reduce packaging and supply expenses.

• Social Burger, which is outfitted with recycled-wood tables and uses EcoCraft sustainable packaging.

• The Sustainability Guys, which seeks affordable, proven, environmentally friendly solutions that offer clients the greatest return on investment. Among those solutions are the use of insulation and energy-efficient windows. The company practices what it preaches, using many of those same techniques at its own offices, DiMauro said.

“These are all local businesses or all individually owned,” added Community Enhancement Commission chairman Susan Stillman. “Support them. They’re supporting us and our future.”

The Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation Board of Trustees announced Dec. 12 that Elizabeth “Libby” Bush had been named the new CEO/executive director of Vinson Hall Retirement Community and Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation in McLean.

Bush at the end of November succeeded Kathleen Martin, who in June announced she would retire in mid-November after serving in that role for 12 years.

“Libby is an enthusiastic leader with strong communication abilities and a passion for aging services. She will be a strong and committed CEO for Vinson Hall Retirement Community,” said Vice Adm. Mark Skinner, chairman of the board of trustees.

Most recently, Bush served as chief operating officer at Ingleside, a provider of comprehensive senior-living services in the local area. Previously, she was the executive director at Westminster at Lake Ridge, an Ingleside community.

Bush has worked in the senior-living industry for 26 years, holding many senior leadership positions, including director of assisted living and vice president of many resident-services departments.

“After admiring Vinson Hall for many years, it is an honor to join this noteworthy community,” Bush said. “I am eager to bring forward distinguished tradition while creating the next chapter with all who live, work and are a part of [Vinson Hall Retirement Community].”

Transportation Notes PER-PASSENGER COSTS SLATED TO COME DOWN AT AIRPORTS: The cost-

per-enplanement at Northern Virginia’s two major airports will come down under the 2018 budget of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. And that would seem to be good news both for airlines and the authority itself.

Under the roughly $700 million operating budget, the cost-per-enplanement will decline from $18.97 to $17.82 at Washington Dulles International Airport, and from $14.12 to $11.84 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

As the name implies, the figure represents costs passed on to airlines to use the airports, divided by the number of departing passengers.

Should the figure rise too high, airlines get skittish about using specific airports more than necessary. That appeared to be the case at Dulles, where in 2014 the cost-per-enplanement had risen to $26.99, more than double that at Reagan National and among the highest of comparably sized facilities in the nation.

Aided by a state-government grant and its own belt-tightening, the airports authority whittled down the Dulles figure to $23.67 in 2016 and $21 in 2016. (The cost-per-enplanement at Reagan National was rising slightly during the same period; the 2018 amount will be the first yearover-year decline in four years.)

Comparing the cost-per-enplanement

figures at various airports is akin to comparing SAT scores of various school districts; the figures provide some insight but also leave plenty of room for misinterpretation.

According to DWU Consulting, the cost-per-enplanement at the nation’s 30 largest airports ranged from $1.35 (Charlotte Douglas International Airport) to $28.06 (Newark-Liberty International).

Eleven of the 30 airports had operating costs of less than $10 per enplanement; six had costs of more than $15. At the region’s third airport – Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall, dominated by Southwest Airlines – the 2016 cost-per-enplanement was $9.51, according to DWU Consulting.

The $702.2 million operating-program budget for the airports authority for 2018 is up $22.1 million, or 3.2 percent, from the current year. Most of that is due to a 4.8-percent increase in debt-service costs, which account for 48 percent of all airport spending. Actual operating costs are budgeted to rise 1.9 percent.

REAGAN NATIONAL, DULLES SEE PASSENGER INCREASES: Northern

Virginia’s two major airports saw a combined 2.8-percent year-over-year growth in passenger counts in October, according to new data, with both Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport see-

ing growth.

At Dulles, the passenger total of 1.99 million was up 3.3 percent from a year before, fueled by modest increases in both domestic and international service by dominant carrier United, larger increases from Frontier and Southwest and significant growth from a number of international carriers, including Air China, Air Canada and Qatar.

At Reagan National, the passenger count of 2.15 million for October – up 2.4 percent – was buoyed by a 4-percent increase from dominant carrier American.

Delta, Alaska and United saw growth, while Southwest and Sun Country reported declines due to reduced service.

(Passengers counts at the third major airport in the region, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall, were not immediately available.)

For the month, United and its regional carriers carried 63 percent of all passengers at Dulles, down from 64.6 percent a year before, while at Reagan National, American and its regional carriers were responsible for 49.5 percent of all passengers, up from 48.6 percent.

For the first 10 months of the year, the 20.1 million passengers traveling through Reagan National represented an increase of 1.7 percent from a year before, suggesting another in a series of record-breaking passenger travel years could be within reach. At Dulles, which has been on a re-

bound after several years of stagnation, the 19.2 million passengers carried during the January-to-October period represented an increase of 4.3 percent.

Combined, the two airports reported a year-over-year increase of 3 percent for the first 10 months of the year.

CATHAY PACIFIC HEADED TO DULLES NEXT YEAR: It appears that nonstop ser-

vice between Washington Dulles International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport is on the horizon.

While it hasn’t officially been announced, the South China Morning Post and other outlets have reported that Cathay Pacific will inaugurate service to Dulles in 2018. At more than 8,100 miles each way, it will become the airline’s longest route, besting Hong-Kong-to-NewYork (Kennedy) service by 100 miles.

The airline plans to use Airbus A350900 aircraft that offer 280 seats and suites in a three-cabin configuration.

In addition to New York, Cathay Pacific also serves Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark and San Francisco in the U.S. With a passenger count of 70.5 million last year, Hong Kong International Airport ranked as the fourth-busiest airport in Asia by total passengers.

The Flint Hill Huskies passed a big basketball exam with huge marks Dec. 16.

The visiting girls high school team routed the McLean Highlanders, 59-35, BASKETBALL intricta non-discontest after being idle on an eight-day layoff since its previous games while the Oakton private school held week-long academic exams.

When the Huskies returned to the court, Flint Hill head coach Jody Patrick was concerned if the lack of action would cause rust and ragged play. That wasn’t the case.

Flint Hill (3-3) was sharp from the start, building a 14-0 lead and remained comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

The Huskies led 31-13 at halftime and 45-23 after three periods with only six turnovers entering the final quarter.

Long before the 2017-18 season began, Marshall Statesmen girls coach Mike Trivisonno made a request.

GIRLS BASKETBALL He asked the schedule makers to have his girls high school basketball team play as many larger-school Class 6 opponents as possible during the early season. Reason being, if Marshall qualifies for postseason region competition in a few months, the Statesmen will play in the Class 6 region tournament and the coach wants to be prepared.

During the regular season, Marshall plays in the National District against

small Class 5 schools.

The request was granted, and so far Marshall (7-1 overall) is doing just fine against the bigger schools with a 5-1 record.

“We wanted to see how we stack up against those teams, and so far so good,” Trivisonno said.

Wins against Class 6 teams have been over notables Langley, McLean, Fairfax and South Lakes. Its one loss was the Class 6 Madison, 44-40. Langley is the defending Class 6 region champion.

Against perennial Class 5 and defending region champion Edison last week, Marshall won 70-66 behind 29 points from Clara Ford, 17 from Christina Trivisonno, 12 from Zoe Soule and eight from Grace Grill.

On Dec. 15, Marshall defeated host Falls Church, 57-49, to improve to 2-0 in the National District. The first thing that needs to be planned for is the climate of an inside pool – usually way hot and humid and very stuffy, with an unavoidable and persistent strong smell of chlorine. Proper dress would be shorts and short sleeves or a T-shirt. Otherwise, you can become a sweaty mess.

If walking the deck of the pool, shoes and socks are a no-no. They will get soaked very quickly from the water that’s splashed from the pool from the diving, but mostly from the swimmers’ flip turns.

Bare feet, flip-flops or tall rubber boots, as Madison High coach Andrew Foos regularly wears during meets, is the best and driest foot attire.

Foos said it took him a few meets to discover the secret of rubber boots.

No matter what footwear, it’s easy to slip anytime. So never run, walk slowly and pay attention to the surroundings. It’s possible to get bumped into the water.

Once the races start, the meets move quickly, with very little time between each event – seconds, not minutes. For that reason, paying attention is a must. Getting behind makes it difficult to catch up.

Pool sound systems usually are poor, making it hard to hear what’s being announced. Having a lineup of races helps follow the schedule.

There isn’t much room to maneuver along pool decks. Meet officials take up one end and cheering swimmers the sides and the opposite end.

Sagebrush has not applied yet for a town business license or an amended occupancy permit, which would allow the facility to exceed the town’s usual limit of four unrelated people occupying a home, said Vienna Planning and Zoning Director Patrick Mulhern.

“If [the state government] confirms they’re licensed and meet all requirements under state code, it trumps the local zoning ordinance as far as the number of people” allowed to live on-site, he said.

Sagebrush has not listed a formal name for the new facility and Vienna officials will press to have the company use the same name as the one listed on the occupancy permit, Mulhern said.

The facility’s residents would stay for approximately 10 weeks to 90 days and would be treated off-site for their disorders, such as at Alcoholics Anonymous

meetings, he said.

The facility is designed to fill the gap between in-patient and out-patient services, said Town Attorney Steven Briglia, who added the residents would not be allowed to have personal vehicles at the site.

O’Keefe disputed the parking arrangement, saying if the facility were allowed by-right, the town would not be able to enforce such rules.

The facility would start off with a sixmonth conditional license from the state, Briglia said.

Vienna Town Council member Pasha Majdi said he supported such long-term residential facilities, but was “deeply concerned” that the statute regarding such operations “was written to circumvent local zoning law.”

Council member Douglas Noble said the state’s regulations were based on re-

quirements of the federal Fair Housing Act. The rules implemented by the state have “taken our ability to do anything away from us as a local community,” Noble said. “This is not the town of Vienna doing something to the neighborhood.”

Vanessa Vergnetti, chief executive officer at Sagebrush Treatment Center in Tysons, said the company is completing the town of Vienna’s business-license application for the Circle Drive, S.W., facility and will open that operation once the business receives the license. The facility will be privately run and will not have a name, she said.

“As a federally- and state-protected addiction-recovery program, Sagebrush is proud of its work supporting recovery efforts to those in the community, and is committed to being a good neighbor in Vienna,” Vergnetti said.

Public-Safety Notes GUILTY PLEA ENTERED IN CASE WHERE OFFICER WAS SHOT AT: A 21-

year-old Herndon man pleaded guilty Dec. 12 to several charges related to his shooting at a Fairfax County police officer on Jan. 22 in Great Falls.

Brian Neftali Landaverde pleaded guilty to attempted capital murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and speeding to elude.

Landaverde shot at the officer, who was driving a marked cruiser, shortly after police tried to conduct a traffic stop on Georgetown Pike near Rossmore Court, authorities said.

The officer was not injured during the shooting and Landaverde sped away from the scene, police said. The next day Herndon police arrested Landaverde on unrelated charges.

Landaverde is due to be sentenced on March 9.

POLICE CHASE STARTS IN TYSONS, ENDS IN LOUDOUN: A Fairfax County

police officer on Dec. 12 at 10:45 p.m. observed a vehicle run a red light near Fashion Boulevard and Leesburg Pike in Tysons and attempted to make a traffic stop.

When the motorist did not stop police

began a pursuit and provided information about the chase to Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office as the suspect’s vehicle crossed into that jurisdiction.

Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle and took the driver, Abdullah Anwar, 23, of Herndon, into custody. Authorities charged Anwar with felony speeding to elude, driving with a revoked license and disregarding a red light.

Authorities later learned the suspect’s vehicle had been reported stolen.

ELECTRONICS, CLOTHING TAKEN IN BREAK-IN AT TYSONS BUSINESS:

Someone entered City Lending Inc., 8150 Leesburg Pike in Tysons, on Dec. 14 at 3:50 a.m. and took electronics and clothing, Fairfax County police said. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

ARMED ROBBERS STEAL CASH FROM CLEANING BUSINESS: Two men entered

The Cleaning Center of Northern Virginia, 7257 Lee Highway in the Falls Church area, on Dec. 14 at 6:30 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded cash, Fairfax County police said.

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash.

An employee at the business was not injured during the robbery and the case is ongoing, police said.

One suspect was described as black and wearing dark clothing.The other was described as black and wearing gray pants.

TOOLS STOLEN FROM VIENNA EMPLOYEE’S VEHICLE: A town of Vienna

employee told Vienna police that on Dec. 8 between 1 and 1:30 p.m. someone stole a tool from his work vehicle in the 1000 block of Cottage Street, S.W. REPORT: WHILE FAMILY’S AWAY, TEENS WILL PLAY: A local resident told

Vienna police on Dec. 8 at 9:55 p.m. that while taking care of a friend’s pet while the family was out of town, he arrived at the home in the 500 block of Windover Avenue, N.W., and observed three teenage boys running out the rear door.

Police located one of the teens and were told the boys had been given permission by the juvenile who resides there to enter the home while the family was away.

The parents were not aware their son had given his friends permission to enter the home, police said.
