Smaller, Fewer Parking Spaces in Vienna’s Future? Variety of Options Are on the Table, But None Seems to Have Universal Appeal BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Vienna officials are pondering ways of modernizing the town’s parking rules – including reducing the amount of spaces required and allowing compact parking spots – to accommodate future develop-
ment. But Vienna Town Council members, who took up the matter at their April 3 meeting, are not ready yet to decide which of the proposed regulations should be approved. The changes were suggested by town planning staffers and recommended by
the Vienna Planning Commission after some modifications. Much of Vienna’s parking ordinance dates back to 1969 and needs to be clarified and brought into accord with state code and modern building practices and patterns, officials said. The proposed rules would be listed as a chart, rather than using the current
narrative form, said Planning and Zoning Director Patrick Mulhern. The town’s current parking code allows for no compact spaces, mandates a general parking-space size of 9-by-20feet and requires one space for every 200 Continued on Page 18
