Since assuming command of McLean District Station in late April, Fairfax County police Capt. Alan Hanson has encouraged officers to focus on safety, respect the sanctity of all life, de-escalate volatile situations and understand the needs of people undergoing mental or drug-induced crises. “Our goal is that everybody goes home after the event, whether it’s the victim, the officer or the suspect,” he said. Substations take power from high-voltage transmission lines and reduce the voltage so it may be used by businesses, residents and other consumers. The new Tysons substation would be centered along an overhead-transmission-line route, and those lines would connect with equipment in the building. The substation would straddle the line between two rezoning applications – CARS East and Sunburst – approved last September by the Board of Supervisors. These developments, covering about 16.7 acres, will create nine urban blocks filled with a mix of office, retail, hotel and residential space. Dominion would build the power station in advance of those two developments and, after the Sunburst site is redeContinued on Page 14
