Since assuming command of McLean District Station in late April, Fairfax County police Capt.

Alan Hanson has encouraged officers to focus on safety, respect the sanctity of all life, de-escalate volatile situations and understand the needs of people undergoing mental or drug-induced crises.

“Our goal is that everybody goes home after the event, whether it’s the victim, the officer or the suspect,” he said.

Hanson now is on his third tour in McLean. He joined the department in August 1994 and was assigned to the McLean station in January 1995 after attending the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy.

After being promoted to sergeant in 2000 and serving for five years at Mason District Station, he returned to McLean as a second lieutenant. Hanson worked the midnight shift for a while, then served as supervisor of a neighborhood patrol unit.

The Tysons area and Metro’s Silver Line require plenty of electricity, and will need even more in the future, so Dominion Energy is planning a new power substation for the urban center’s west side.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission on Sept. 13 is scheduled to review the proposed substation, which would be located along the future Commonwealth Street about 700 feet southwest of Route 7’s intersection with Spring Hill Road.

The unmanned electrical substation would relieve the load on an existing facility in the area, provide power to the Silver Line’s Spring Hill and Greensboro stations and supply emergency backup for the regional power grid, according to a county staff report.

Substations take power from high-voltage transmission lines and reduce the voltage so it may be used by businesses, residents and other consumers. The new Tysons substation would be centered along an overhead-transmission-line route, and those lines would connect with equipment in the building.

The substation would straddle the line between two rezoning applications – CARS East and Sunburst – approved last September by the Board of Supervisors. These developments, covering about 16.7 acres, will create nine urban blocks filled with a mix of office, retail, hotel and residential space.

MCA Aims for Resolution of Claude Moore Fight

Organization Urges ‘Friends’ Group, National Park Service to Consider Going to Mediation BRIAN TROMPETER

The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) board of directors on Sept. 5 approved a resolution asking the Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm and the National Park Service to seek mediation and resolve their differences so educational programs at the McLean site can continue.

National Park Service officials this spring announced that negotiations with the friends group were at an impasse because the latter would not sign an updated memorandum of understanding. As a result, the groups would part ways Dec. 21

and the friends organization’s presence at the farm would end, they said.

Park Service officials said the new agreement would be more in keeping with other partnerships the agency has with friends groups, but the Claude Moore organization said revised memorandum imposed too many additional demands and, at 10 years in length, did not allow for sufficient long-term planning.

MCA board members strengthened their resolution’s wording from its draft version, which only had encouraged all parties to find a solution.

“Provided the long history of successful programming at the Colonial Farm, the value of this unique park to McLean

and the broader community, and the outpouring of public support, the McLean Citizens Association strongly encourages all parties to engage in a mediation process in order to facilitate a resolution so that this valuable facility continues to be enjoyed by the community,” the revised resolution read.

The Claude Moore site serves a unique purpose, said Edward Monroe, chairman of MCA’s Environment, Parks and Recreation Committee.

There seems to be no other such park in Virginia, Maryland, or Washington, D.C., that celebrates early American life by engaging visitors in the daily and seasonal activities of an 18th-century, single-

family farm, he said.

The MCA board appreciates efforts by U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th) to seek a legislative solution to the impasse and hopes she will support establishment of a mediation process to reach an agreement that will take into account the missions and priorities of the friends group and the National Park Service’s George Washington Memorial Parkway, Monroe said.

The Environment, Parks and Recreation Committee also will contact other U.S. House of Representatives and Senate members in the affected area, along with other parties, to seek a solution, Monroe said.

Fairfax County again in 2017 ranked second among Virginia localities in domestic tourism and convention spending, according to new state data, although it fell slightly further behind neighboring Arlington.

Tourism-related spending in the county totaled $3.17 billion last year, according to an analysis by the U.S. Travel Association commissioned by the Virginia Tourism Corp., an arm of the state government.

Total domestic-tourism expenditures in Fairfax grew 4.3 percent from 2016 to 2017, slightly below than the 4.4-percent rate of state growth.

At $3.36 billion, Arlington County topped all statewide jurisdictions. Its growth rate was 4.3 percent.

Rounding out the top five jurisdictions were Loudoun County ($1.76 billion, up 4.6 percent), Virginia Beach ($1.56 billion, up 4.6 percent) and Henrico County ($916 million, up 4.1 percent).

Statewide, domestic-tourism spending totaled $24.75 billion in 2017 and supported 232,000 jobs in the commonwealth, according to the data. Each of Virginia’s 133 counties and cities saw a year-overyear increase in travel expenditures.

Since 2010, travel expenditures have increased at an annual rate of 3.9 percent statewide.

According to the survey, the hotel-occupancy rate statewide for the year stood at 63.9 percent, with the average daily

room rate of $109.66 up 2.9 percent.

Tourism-related spending netted the state government $1.05 billion and local governments $681 million in tax receipts during the year.

Arlington was tops in local-tax receipts at $91.7 million, followed by Virginia Beach ($61.2 million), Fairfax County ($58.6 million), Henrico County ($28.2 million) and Loudoun County ($27.9 million).

Revision to Upton Hill Plan Will Save More Trees

Proposed Extra Parking Lot Nixed for Park That Straddles Arlington-Fairfax Line SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority has agreed to make several changes to its development plan at Upton Hill Regional Park, aimed at assuaging those concerned about the removal of existing trees.

Under a proposal forwarded to the Arlington County government, the park authority (also known as NOVA Parks) has “come up with a plan modification that will save 49 trees,” said executive director Paul Gilbert, calling it “a win-win for both the natural resources and the active users of the park.”

To do so, the park authority will eliminate plans for a lower parking lot and vehicular access directly off Wilson Boulevard, which also had been areas of contention with neighborhood residents.

The plan worked out with the Arlington government “is to make the street parking along Wilson Boulevard timelimited during the day,” Gilbert said in a letter to the chairman of the county government’s Urban Forestry Division.

On-street parking likely will be limited to 3-hour stints. “Having these spaces turn over during the day will allow park users to find street parking to access the lower area of the park,” Gilbert wrote The proposal should ease concerns of the Urban Forestry Commission, which had been unhappy with the proposed number of mature trees that would be taken down.

“Given that Upton Hill Regional Park is an environmental gem in urbanizing Arlington, it warrants the extra effort,” said Norma Palmatier, chairman of the commission, in an Aug. 29 letter to County Board Chairman Katie Cristol.

Gilbert told the Sun Gazette that the NOVA Parks would now return to county staff and re-submit permit applications for the project. He is not anticipating any major snags. “We’re thrilled we’re going to be moving forward,” he said.

The project does not need to go to the Arlington County Board for approval, but board chairman Cristol said she was “encouraged by these developments.”

“We would credit both NOVA Parks and our staff for crafting a solution,”

Cristol said.

A variety of park improvements have been in the planning stage for years. The plan calls for installation of a high-quality climbing tower (potentially with ropes course), plus reforestation of natural areas. NOVA Parks officials plan to fund the entire effort using bonds backed by the anticipated revenue from the climbing tower.

The proposed removal of mature trees to make way for parking drew the ire of some nearby residents and the newly formed Arlington Tree Action Group (ATAG). The adjoining Boulevard Manor Civic Association was generally supportive of the overall project.

In his letter to Palmatier, Gilbert said the revised plan would allow NOVA Parks to save 35 living and 14 dead trees that previously would have been removed.

Which leads to a perhaps obvious question: Why would dead trees be worth saving?

They do offer a “small level of ecological value,” Gilbert told the Sun Gazette.

Their retention was sought by ATAG. The revamped park plan also calls for

incorporating an area of currently mowed grass into an oak-history forest, and removing invasive plants from all forested area.

Straddling the Arlington/Fairfax border, Upton Hill Regional Park has passive areas but is better known for its large swimming complex, miniature-golf course and batting cages that draw crowds from spring to autumn.

Gilbert told the Sun Gazette that the changes being presented to the county government will not substantively impact the project’s timeline. Work will begin later this year, although it is likely the climbing tower will not be constructed until the winter of 2019-20.

Over the summer, Christopher Tighe, president of the Boulevard Manor Civic Association, acknowledged that the new amenities would bring more people and traffic, but was philosophical about it.

“There’s going to be trade-offs,” he said then, but praised the overall direction of the expansion and the partnership with NOVA Parks and neighbors.

“This is a phenomenal plan,” Tighe said during the summer.

Endorsement: Don Beyer in the 8th District When he first ran for Congress upon retirement of the venerable Jim Moran four years ago, Don Beyer seemed to some to be a perfect match for the 8th District: He was reliably progressive in his views, had real-world experience as a business owner, came with past experience as the commonwealth’s two-term lieutenant governor, had good political skills and offered the public an unblemished ethical record.

The electorate responded: Beyer in 2014 easily won in the Democratic primary and will have no problem holding the seat in general elections as long as he wishes. And given that there’s somewhere between a possibility and probability that Democrats will win control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the fall, we’re guessing Beyer will be sticking around for the long haul.

Although he tacks somewhat to the left on where we’d like politicians to be, that’s his prerogative, and voters in the reliably Democratic 8th District have judged his efforts positively.

This year’s lone challenger to Beyer is Republican Thomas Oh, who holds the distinction of being the young-

est candidate running for Congress in 2018. Like Charles Hernick (the Republican nominee two years ago), Oh is new to the local political scene and has attempted to outflank Beyer from the left on a number of issues.

Give the GOP candidates points for creativity, but – hobbled by Donald Trump at the top of the ticket – Hernick won just over a quarter of the vote in 2016, and Oh is likely to do about the same. He has not raised the cash to adequately tell his story and has seemed disinclined in to build bridges with local Republican organizations that could provide ground troops for a get-out-the-vote effort.

As for Beyer? Victory could prove a double-edged sword: Should Democrats find themselves in control of the House of Representatives in 2019, he may find himself part of a majority that, despite his own seriousness of purpose, is aggressively leftist and out of step with real-life concerns of the public – which could make it a very short run as the majority, indeed.

But that’s for the future to determine. As for Election Day, it’s an easy choice: We support U.S. REP. DON BEYER for re-election in the 8th District.

Comstock Proves Too Extremist for 10th District Editor: After moving back to Northern Virginia, I am disappointed to learn my member of Congress, Barbara Comstock, wields a friendly face and an extremist vote.

With children returning to school, we are all concerned for their safety and know that fear is not conducive to good learning. I am retired military and a former police officer in both Pennsylvania and New York. My view is that carrying a firearm of any kind comes with a heavy responsibility. A responsibility that the National Rifle Association denies.

Rep. Comstock ignores that responsibility as well, and votes for the NRA

agenda, which appears to advocate every liberty to gun owners while denying every responsibility. Rep. Comstock’s votes oppose universal background checks and sane limits on semi-automatic weapons originally designed as weapons of war.

The NRA makes no secret that it rewards politicians who support their agenda. Rep. Comstock is richly rewarded, ranking in the House of Representatives’ top 10 all-time NRA funding recipients.

The military maintains strict regulations concerning who bears arms, what arms and when they carry those arms. The military does so because these weapons are deadly and that they

are designed only to kill many people quickly. Armed troops, no matter how well trained, will make mistakes. Commanders take every precaution to reduce those errors to preserve the lives of valuable military members. Shouldn’t our schoolchildren and staff deserve some protections to their lives?

This father, grandfather and old soldier supports both keeping our children safe and passing commonsense gun safety legislation, restoring some responsibility to gun ownership. This is but one reason why I support Jennifer Wexton.

AAUW Book Sale Proved a Successful Gathering Editor: The McLean area branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) would like to thank our loyal patrons for helping us achieve another successful book sale during the Labor Day weekend.

Our 49th annual book sale raised more than $40,000. The proceeds of our book sales have been used to fund scholarships for women in local colleges; provide awards in science and math to local high-school girls; and fund na-

tional AAUW programs, such as the Legal Advocacy Fund, campus initiatives to promote women in leadership roles, STEM initiatives, and the AAUW Start Smart and Work Smart programs.

Our branch has also funded four endowments, providing grants and fellowships for women pursuing graduate degrees.

Transportation Notes PUBLIC-TRANSIT USAGE UP SLIGHTLY IN LATEST QUARTERLY REPORT: Pub-

lic-transit usage across Northern Virginia was up slightly in the second quarter of 2018 from a year before, as Metrorail rebounded and bus services lost passengers.

A total of 35.33 million rides were taken on regional transit in April, May and June, up 1 percent from 35.03 million the same period a year before, according to figures reported by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission.

Metrorail ridership was up 4 percent to 24.5 million passengers compared to the same period in 2017, when “SafeTrack” repairs caused shutdowns and sent many

Bus service that had been boosted by the SafeTrack disruption of Metrorail in 2017 came back to more normal levels in the second quarter of 2018, with Metrobus ridership for the quarter dropping 9 percent to 4.4 million.

Among local bus systems, Fairfax Connector ridership was down 2 percent to 2.17 million riders, with Arlington Transit seeing a decline of 15 percent to 746,000 riders. Bus services in Loudoun and Prince William counties and the city of Fairfax also saw modest declines, while Alexandria’s DASH network posted a 2percent increase.

WEEKEND CLOSURE SET FOR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Federal officials will close

all six lanes and both sidewalks of Memorial Bridge from Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 17 at 5 a.m.

The closure, which is dependent on weather conditions, will prepare the bridge for renovation work. Another fullweekend closure is expected to take place in November, all leading up to a 2.5-year renovation project for the bridge, which was constructed in 1932.

PILOT PROGRAM TO OFFER PEDALASSIST BICYCLES: The Fairfax County

government on Sept. 5 launched a pilot project that adds black e-bikes to the bright red-colored Capital Bikeshare fleet in Reston and Tysons.

The e-bikes, known as Capital Bikeshare Plus, are battery-operated, pedalassist bicycles that provide users with a small boost, making pedaling uphill or longer distances effortless.

There will be approximately 80 e-bikes deployed across the National Capital Region as part of the pilot, which is scheduled to run through November.

“We hope that e-bikes will open the door for more Fairfax County residents and visitors to enjoy the many benefits of getting around by bicycle,” said Fairfax County bicycle-program manager Nicole Wynands.

E-bikes can be identified by their black color at a Capital Bikeshare station, and are marked with a lightning-bolt symbol in the Capital Bikeshare app. Unlike the regular bikeshare bicycle, the e-bike will need to be powered on before the start of the trip.

The e-bike pilot is designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing Capital Bikeshare system, which offers 4,300 bikes across more than 500 stations in the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions.

INPUT SOUGHT ON FAIRFAX CONNECTOR CHANGES: The Fairfax County

Department of Transportation is seeking public input on proposed changes to Fairfax Connector service. Feedback will be accepted through Oct. 5, and two community meetings will be held in coming days.

Officials plan to introduce a new Route 698 to run rush-hour trips between the Vienna Metro station and the Pentagon in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon, and to introduce Route 467 that will provide midday and evening service between Vienna and Tysons.

Fairfax Connector officials also plan to make changes to the timetables of Routes 924/926 (Herndon-Dranesville Road) to better align with the bell schedule of Herndon High School, which is located on the route.

If adopted by the Board of Supervisors, the changes will go into effect in January.

BY CAR: A 36-year-old Falls Church

woman was killed Sept. 3 after being hit while trying to cross Arlington Boulevard near Graham Road, Fairfax County police said.

The woman, identified by police as Dayssy Avalo, was crossing outside a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle being driven westbound on Arlington Boulevard, police said.

The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither speed nor alcohol appeared by a factor for the driver.

U.S. Rep. Don Beyer is no fan of Donald Trump. But he’s against moving forward with impeachment of the president unless it becomes a true bipartisan effort.

“I don’t believe impeachment should ever be partisan – it should be done together,” Beyer (D-8th) said at a campaign forum sponsored by the Arlington County Civic Federation.

Partisan impeachment proceedings could lead to a subsequent tit-for-tat response the next time a Democrat occupied the White House, Beyer suggested.

In the 1998-99 impeachment of President Bill Clinton, five Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives voted for at least one of the four charges brought against the president, but the episode is largely remembered as a partisan effort brokered by Republicans. No Democrats in the U.S. Senate voted to convict Clinton on the two charges that had been approved by the House of Representatives.

Beyer may not end up leading an impeachment charge, but he left no doubt where he stands on Trump. “He’s a disaster,” Beyer said at the forum.

Survey Says: A Dollar Buys Less Space Every inch counts, and in the Washington area (like the rest of the country), they don’t come as cheaply as they used to.

One dollar will buy 0.28 square inches in a typical home across the Washington area this year, according to a new survey by Zillow. That’s down from 0.41 square inches per dollar in 2008 and an expansive 1.33 square inches per dollar in 1998.

“A dollar today isn’t what it used to be, particularly when it comes to real estate, in light of the rapid pace of home-value appreciation that the American economy has witnessed over the past half-decade,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas.

With home values rising – the median is now almost $220,000 nationally – the same situation is unfolding across the land.

One dollar will buy you 1.07 square inches of the typical U.S. home, but 10 years ago, one dollar bought you 1.23 square inches. Back in 1998, one dollar bought you 2.09 square inches.

(For reference, one square inch is about twice the size of a postage stamp, and a dollar bill itself is a little more than 13.25 square inches.)

In the city of San Jose, Calif., where the typical home is worth almost 84 percent more than it was two decades ago, one dollar will buy you just 0.2 square inches of a home. In 2008 it bought you 0.37 square inches, and back in 1998, one dollar bought you almost one full square inch.

A dollar goes the furthest in Memphis, Tenn., buying more than 2.5 square inches of a home. Expect to get the smallest amount of space for your dollar in San Francisco, where one dollar will buy you just 0.14 square inches.

Fresno falls almost exactly in the middle of Memphis and San Francisco for the space you can get for one dollar, where it will buy you 0.97 square inches of a home.

“Figuring out exactly how much space a dollar does – or doesn’t – buy you can be sobering, but enlightening,” Terrazas said. “The space we live in is a tangible thing, with real value, and this shows how true that is.”

Continued from Page 1 and assigned him to the Resource Management Bureau, where he covered for a major who was attending the FBI National Academy. Hanson stayed at that bureau and helped it transfer to the county’s new Public Safety Headquarters, which opened last October.

As the McLean station’s new commander, he stresses ongoing education for its 133 officers (six more are coming soon) so they and the department will continue to grow and evolve instead of stagnating.

The captain also has implemented “don’t-block-the-box” education and enforcement efforts to keep intersections free from backed-up traffic.

The station’s officers in September will conduct a seat-belt-safety campaign, plus back-to-school initiatives that monitor traffic speeds around school zones and show parents safe methods and places to drop off their children.

Hanson also recently created a community-outreach-officer position, which will be filled in September.

While the station’s boundaries haven’t changed much since Hanson’s previous assignments, the population and character of its urban ares – especially Tysons and Merrifield – certainly have.

Skyscrapers continue to rise in Tysons and in 2014 four new Metro stations along the Silver Line opened there. In re-

sponse, county police created the Tysons Urban Team – nine members now, soon to be more – to cover the burgeoning urban center.

Those Tysons officers have begun working in two-person teams so backup is available immediately, Hanson said. This arrangement will become more common in the county’s urban cores, he predicted.

“An officer responding to assist you and run up three floors in a garden apartment is different from having to go up 40 floors in a high-rise,” Hanson said.

The department also is considering having a new station in Tysons, possibly built using a public-private partnership, he said.

Hanson began working in law enforcement after serving in the military.

He attended the U.S. Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., became a cryptologic officer and did a tour in Iraq in the early 1990s after the shooting had stopped in Operation Desert Storm. He also worked at Fort Meade in Maryland.

Hanson left the military after two years’ active service when the Armed Forces downsized.

At the time, he considered joining the FBI and spoke with a friend whose father served in the agency, who recommended the Fairfax County Police Department instead.

“I got on [the county’s police department], liked what I was doing and never applied to the FBI,” Hanson said. “It was no problem. I was used to that kind of

military structure. I knew my place and my role. It was an easy transition.”

Hanson tries to get out from behind his desk whenever possible. He participates with the county’s civil-disturbance unit.

The captain also chairs the regional civil-disturbance-unit subcommittee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and works with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to devise national standards for protective equipment worn by officers responding to civil upheavals.

NIJ last November sent Hanson to London and Germany, where he visited police departments and learned about their equipment, standards, training and tactics.

He also went to Nigeria four times in 2016 and 2017 to participate in an International Association of Chiefs of Police training program for that country’s 370,000-member national police force.

Hanson’s predecessor, Capt. John Trace, now is a staff duty officer for the department and will retire in December.

Trace said he has known Hanson most for most of his career and recommended him for the McLean post. Trace hoped Hanson would continue his initiatives at the station, conduct ongoing dialogue with local residents and care for officers serving under him.

“We are faced with challenging times as a profession – much of it fake news – and this wears on the officers’ psyche,” Trace said. “The health and well-being of the troops is critical moving forward.”

Fairfax County now is constructing the new 10-foot-wide Vesper Trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, which bisects the substation site. While the electrical facility is under construction, an 8-foot-wide temporary trail would skirt the substation 20 feet to the east and have temporary lighting, county officials said.

Once the station is completed, the temporary pathway area would be widened to 10 feet and improved to meet Virginia Department of Transportation trail standards.

The substation would be surrounded on all four sides by a variable-height wall, the tallest section of which would be 65 feet tall.

To protect the views from future buildings that will surround the facility, Dominion would forgo the standard “open to the sky” design that allows such stations to cool down. Instead the middle portion and each end of the substation would be covered, and perforated roofing materials used for areas in between. The roof would look about 70-percent opaque when viewed from above, officials said.

County planning staff members have recommended approval. The Planning Commission’s Sept. 13 meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

With a 7-0 record that includes three shutouts, the Langley Saxons are off to a strong start to the 2018 girls highschool field hockey season.

FIELD HOCKEY Langley’s most recent victory was a 4-0 win over the Yorktown Patriots on Sept. 5 in a Liberty District match.

Maddie McGaughey scored two goals and Chloe Reed and Erin Sweat one each. The Saxons took eight shots.

Goalie Caroline Lavin made four saves.

“There are no seniors on our team, which provides a dynamic that allows the girls to grow and develop,” Langley coach Katie Robinson said. “The girls have great chemistry. We have faced some challenges and have found the will and grit to overcome them – marked by our first game against Washington-Lee, where we came back to win 3-2 after being down 2-0 at halftime.”

Madison, Potomac School Stay Undefeated A Staff Report

This season the Potomac School Panthers are off to a 2-0 start in highschool football reversing their fortunes of last year’s 0-2 start.

FOOTBALL ROUNDUP The Panthers’ most recent victory was a 28-0 win over host John Paul the Great the night of Sept. 8 in Manassas.

The shutout was the team’s first since the final game of the 2014 regular season.

The Panthers had 333 total yards, of which 299 were rushing. Potomac School took advantage of four turnovers. Quarterback J.T. Tyson rushed for 71 yards. Brown Anglin had 136 yards rushing on 25 carries and ran for three touchdowns. Thomas Ferris had a couple of catches.

On the field, there have been some different types of highlights worth noting – individually and team-wise.

The Marshall Statesmen, McLean Highlanders and Yorktown Patriots all took 7-0 leads in games they eventually lost after giving up big points.

Yorktown was ahead of the Wilson Tigers, 7-0, at halftime, allowed the next 22 points and lost, 37-29.

After scoring first, Marshall yielded 29 second-quarter points to the Madison Warhawks in a 42-14 setback.

McLean scored on a long run on the game’s second offensive play against Marshall, then lost 31-7.

In contrast, the Potomac School Panthers trailed 7-0 and rallied to defeat Norfolk Academy, 20-14.

Individually, Bishop O’Connell High School’s Jahmal Banks scored touchdowns three different ways in his team’s loss to Trinity Episcopal.

He scored on a 91-yard kickoff return, a 75-yard interception run back and a 22-yard TD pass.

Potomac School wide receiver Preston Bacon turned three short flankerscreen catches into 113 yards worth of receptions and one touchdown. He set up another score against Norfolk Academy with a 36-yard punt return.

Wakefield High quarterback Cason Poythress threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns – one pass covering 87 yards – to help his team top Washington-Lee in its season opener.

Yorktown’s Grant Wilson was 11 of 14 passing and Will Porter 10 of 14 against Wilson, as the team uses a two-quarterback system.

Flint Hill Opens Season with Another Lopsided Victory DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

The start of a new season was like the continuation of last fall, with another blowout victory for the Flint Hill Huskies.

The host Huskies routed the Paul VI Panthers, FOOTBALL Catholic 45-14, Sept. 8 in the opening game of the 2018 season for the high-school football team. A year ago, the Huskies dominated and won comfortably over all 11 opponents en route to an undefeated state-championship season.

With many returning starters, Flint

Hill is considered a contender to repeat as Division I private-school state champions.

Against Paul VI, Flint Hill amassed 282 yards and led 45-0 until the Panthers scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns against the Huskies’ second-team defense.

“We played pretty good on defense, and there were some things we need to clean up on offense,” Flint Hill coach Tom Verbanic said. “What I liked was we came ready to play and started fast.”

Flint Hill scored on its first four possessions to take control and a 24-0 lead.

D.C. Core Has Best August in Real Estate for Decade The highest median-sales price for any August over the past decade helped boost the metro D.C. area’s total real-estate sales volume to nearly $2.8 billion in August, an increase of 4.1 percent from a year before, according to new figures.

Total home sales, however, declined slightly to 5,064 for the month, according to figures reported Sept. 11 by MarketStats by Showing Time, based on listing activity from Bright MLS. The decline in sales was concentrated in the single-family sector, which saw a dip of 6.9 percent to 2,279. Townhome sales rose 7.9 percent to 1,360 and condo sales were up 4.4 percent to 1,425.

Median year-over-year prices for August rose in every local jurisdiction except the cities of Alexandria and Fairfax. The median sales price in Arlington was up 3.7 percent to $565,000, while the median sales price in Fairfax County was up 0.9 percent to $509,500.

The city of Falls Church led all jurisdictions with a median price of $869,500, up 7.6 percent. Prince George’s County had the lowest median price, at $294,950,

up 7.3 percent.

With 9,681 active listings across the market at the end of the month, inventory was down 1.8 percent from a year before and recorded the 28th consecutive month of year-over-year declines, although it was the smallest dip since September 2017. Listings coming onto the market in August totaled 6,071, up 3 percent from a year before.

For the first eight months of the year, total closed sales are down 0.9 percent to 38,134, while the median sales price is up 3.5 percent to $445,000.

Fairfax County Notes PARK AUTHORITY ACCEPTING COMMENTS ON DRONE POLICY: The Fairfax

County Park Authority will be accepting written comments through Oct. 8 on prospective changes to policies regarding remote-controlled devices in county parks.

The Park Authority is working to align its regulations to current state law. The proposed amendments can be found at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/model-aircrafts-drones.
