At least since a public “charrette” in 2001, Vienna’s leaders have sought to incentivize property owners in the Maple Avenue commercial area to redevelop
their properties. But the massive turnout against a proposed mixed-use redevelopment at 430, 440 and 444 Maple Ave., W., at the Vienna Town Council’s July 9 meeting showed that the town’s Maple Avenue Commercial (MAC) ordinance may not have as much
public support as previously believed. Opponents worried not only about the project’s 160 residential units, commercial space and narrow access in the rear for emergency vehicles, but also what effects that development and similarly dense ones in other locations would have on the
town’s roads, schools and infrastructure. “I don’t want us, as a town, to lose out on the opportunity to encourage Maple Avenue commuters to stop and shop in town,” said Shelley Ebert, who lives on Continued on Page 18

Chesterbrook Tops NVSL – Again! For the third summer in a row and 11th time in team history, the Chesterbrook Tiger Sharks are the Division 1 champions of the Northern Virginia Swimming League. Chesterbrook finished 5-0, winning the title July 21 at its home McLean pool against the second-place Overlee Flying Fish (4-1) of Arlington in the final 2018 regular-season meet for each team. The final score was 238182.

With the win, the Tiger Sharks extended their three-season winning streak to 15. In the meet against Overlee, the score was tied at 45 after the initial freestyle races. Chesterbrook began slowing pulling away during the next three strokes, then clinched the win during the relays.
