Some Northern Virginians favor extending the Interstate 495 Express Lanes to the American Legion Bridge, but others fear impacts on neighborhood roads

and wonder whether Maryland officials will approve corresponding lanes on the bridge’s opposite side. Local residents and a state delegate expressed those sentiments and more June 11 during a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) briefing at Coo-

per Middle School in McLean. “The option of doing nothing is not acceptable,” said Sally Horn, a McLean Citizens Association board member. “My worry is that the tremendous traffic we see today will get worse before the project is finished.”

The proposed project, nicknamed “495 NEXT,” would extend two Express Lanes in each direction on the Beltway for about 3 miles south of the bridge. The lanes, like the ones they would join, would use “dyContinued on Page 17
