Vienna Town Council elections often draw a slew of candidates when at least one seat is open, but when all the incumbents are running, challengers rarely enter the fray.

All four incumbents whose seats are up for grabs in the May 1 election announced their re-election bids in January and no one else filed before the March 6 deadline to challenge them, Fairfax County election officials said.

Mayor Laurie DiRocco, who was elected to the Council in 2009, was appointed by the Council in spring 2014 to succeed the late Mayor M. Jane Seeman. DiRocco ran unopposed in regular May elections in 2014 and 2016.

The former chairman of the Vienna Planning Commission and Transportation Safety Commission told the Sun Gazette earlier this year that she prides herself on engaging with town residents and seeking their opinions on issues.

The total number of people employed inside the boundaries of Fairfax County rose in the third quarter of 2017 while the average weekly paycheck of those working in the county declined, according to new federal data.

The estimated 603,000 people employed in the county’s borders in September 2017 represented an increase of 0.7 percent from a year before, according to figures reported March 8 by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

(Figures represent those employed inside the county’s borders, no matter where they may reside.)

Fairfax’s 0.7-percent growth rate compares to a national year-over-year increase of 1 percent, and puts Fairfax 192nd out of the 346 largest U.S. counties in employment growth.

While the number of jobs increased, the average paycheck declined – dropping 0.6 percent in Fairfax County to $1,540.

That compares to a national decline of 0.6 percent to $1,023 in the third quarter, only the ninth decline in quarterly reporting dating back to 1978.

Fairfax’s average weekly paycheck for the quarter was high enough to rank 9th best among the 346 largest counties.

For the quarter, 265 of the 346 largest counties had over-the-year decreases in average weekly wages. Mercer, N.J., had the largest percentage wage decrease among the largest U.S. counties, down 8.8 percent.

Of the 71 counties experiencing an over-the-year increase in average weekly wages, Midland, Texas, had the largest percentage increase in average weekly wages, up 8.4 percent.

Among other Virginia localities, average weekly wages for the quarter stood at $1,179 in Loudoun County, up 1.6 percent; $1,438 in Alexandria, down 0.2 percent; $993 in Newport News, down 0.3 percent; $990 in Norfolk, down 4 percent; $960 in Henrico, down 2.5 percent; $894 in Prince William, down 2.2 percent; $865 in Chesterfield, down 2 percent; $807 in Chesapeake, down 0.1 percent; and $775 in Virginia Beach, down 1.4 percent.

Nationally, Los Angeles County, Calif., had the highest number of people employed inside its borders for the quarter, at 4.41 million.

Legislature Lauds Achievements of Schools, Students From Across Local Region in a Series of Resolutions Before wrapping up its 2018 session, members of the General Assembly paused to salute the achievements of some local students and schools.

Among the resolutions: • The highly touted Longfellow Middle School Rubik’s Cube team has received an “attaboy” from the Virginia General Assembly.

Legislators approved a resolution saluting the team, which is ranked tops in its age category in national competition, noting that team members recently were able to solve 25 puzzles in 96 seconds in the D.C. Metro Rubik’s Cube Challenge.

During that competition, team members Michael Fatemi and Justin Choi solved puzzles in 12.6 seconds and 15.1 seconds, respectively. (Fatemi, ranked as the top middle-schooler in the nation, has solved a Rubik’s Cube in as fast as 4.59 seconds, while Choi has a top time of 7.7 seconds.)

Members of the team “encourage each other to achieve new heights by fostering a spirit of friendly competition,” notes the resolution, patroned by Del. Rip Sullivan (D-48th) and approved by both houses of the legislature.

The team’s success “is a testament to the dedication and skill of each of the competitors, the guidance of coaches

and staff, and the enthusiastic support of classmates, family, friends and the entire Longfellow Middle School community,” notes the resolution.

The success of the team in 2017 was nothing new for Longfellow, as the squad long has had one of the dominant Rubik’s Cube programs in the region. Seven years ago, members of the school team even had the opportunity to meet Hungarian sculptor and professor Erno Rubik, who conceived the cubes in the 1970s.

The puzzles, originally called Magic Cubes, were enormously popular in the 1980s and have had a recent resurgence of public interest. About one-third of a billion of them have been sold worldwide.

• The Longfellow Middle School Science Olympiad team has been honored by the General Assembly for taking first place in the 2017 Virginia Science Olympiad.

The team “faced worthy competitors from throughout the commonwealth at the state competition, which was held at the University of Virginia, and won by an impressive 51-point margin,” notes the resolution, patroned by Del. Rip Sullivan (D-48th) and approved by both houses of the legislature.

• The James Madison High School Band’s successes of 2017 recently were honored by the Virginia General Assembly.

Legislators took time to laud the program, which was a national winner of the National Band Association’s prestigious Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award, the organization’s highest honor.

The band was one of just four programs nationally to receive the accolade in 2017.

• The McLean High School Highlander Marching Band has been honored by the General Assembly for winning USBands Virginia State Championship last October.

The McLean band program – “Not All Heroes Wear Capes” – beat out a field of 16 schools from across the commonwealth.

The band program, with almost 200 members, also won awards for best music, best general effect and best visual.

“The McLean High School Highlander marching band’s state championship win is a testament to the skill and dedication of all its student-performers, the exemplary leadership of its directors, and the enthusiastic support of families, friends and the entire McLean High School community,” notes the resolution, patroned by Del. Our View: Transparency on the Total Tax Rate Noted philosopher Homer Simpson once opined a truism. “Green M&Ms, red M&Ms . . . they all end up the same color in the end,” he said.

Draw your own mental picture of that. But for purposes of this discussion, that piece of earthy wisdom relates to a bit of sleight-of-hand being conducted by the Fairfax County government when it comes to reporting maximum potential tax rates for the coming year.

Intentionally or not, Fairfax officials make it difficult for its property owners to know the full extent of their tax burden, by segregating the county’s stormwater tax away from the overall real-estate tax. You can track down the stormwater-tax information, but it’s not pre-

sented in a particularly transparent way.

Since the stormwater tax is applied to all real-estate parcels, just like the main real-estate tax, it forms an integral part of a property’s tax bill and should be disclosed with as much transparency as possible.

Neighboring Arlington County does it better: In its public statements during budget season, the Arlington government integrates its stormwater-tax rate with the basic real-estate tax, giving property owners a more accurate idea of the effective tax rate.

Fairfax is doing nothing wrong by imposing a stormwater tax on top of the basic real-estate tax rate. But a little more transparency would be appropriate.

Time to Stop Catering to Victimhood Mentality Editor: Given the horrific death toll in the Civil War, how do “Virginians of this age” (transplanted or not) think they have any right to change names or remove memorials honoring Virginia’s soldiers and heroes?

In the state of New York alone, there are more than 270 Union monuments in 60 counties – and that’s fine. But in Virginia, this state’s Confederate monuments are deemed “offensive” and must come down. That’s downright insulting!

So, too, are the slanders against Robert E. Lee, whose solemn duty as a

soldier was to defend Virginia against Union military attack.

Arguments about the legality of secession have been made since the war ended. Still, the only definitive answer is that the war itself settled the question.

Confederate leaders and soldiers, for many reasons including constitutional uncertainty, were never prosecuted for treason.

Attacks on all things Confederate are being orchestrated to remove historical references and memorials. This intolerance is fueling historical purges by political and cultural revolutionaries no

different than Mao’s Red Guards or the Taliban.

Confederate names and monuments hurt no one (not then and not now), and if all could magically disappear, nothing would change. Perceived racism will never end as long as identity politics prevails and nervous politicians cater to the victimhood industry.

Editor: On Feb. 20, the Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to McLean’s Comprehensive Plan to reclassify a part of McLean’s Community Business Center (CBC) from a “Stabilization and Enhancement” area to a “Redevelopment” area.

The amendment facilitates a rezoning proposal to build an eight-story, 90-foot tall, 44-unit condominium in the parking lot of the 40-foot-tall Bassing Building (current home to Chipotle) on Old Dominion Drive and across Emerson Avenue from the 90-foot-tall Palladium condominium.

The proposal would allow the developer, Benchmark Properties, to add a 100,000 square-foot condominium to the existing 29,000-square-foot Bassing

Building for a total of 129,000 square feet on the 1.43-acre site. If approved, the rezoning would permit a maximum of 2.0 floor-area ratio, a substantial increase from the current maximum of 0.7 FAR. The new condo would be in addition to the 123-unit, seven-story Signet Condominium now being built on Fleetwood Road.

The Comprehensive Plan envisages that the CBC keeps its “modest” scale and encourages primarily the development of less dense, neighborhood-serving retail, commercial, medical and professional services in the downtown area.

This particular rezoning could have the opposite result.

An update of the McLean Comprehensive Plan is in the works. McLean

residents must get involved to decide if they want to continue high-density urbanization downtown, and whether it will turn McLean into a mini-Tysons.

A new factor that probably should be considered is the cut-through traffic that threatens to destabilize surrounding neighborhoods, the CBC being bounded by roads that cannot be enlarged.

In the meantime, county supervisors evaluating such rezoning should take a “do-no-harm” approach. A building of 70 to 75 feet (not 90) in the parking lot one block from McLean’s central intersection would be more appropriate, less visually intrusive and more of a transition between the 40-foot Bassing building and the 90-foot Palladium.

Vienna Town Manager Proposes No Tax-Rate Change BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Vienna would hold its real-estate-tax rate steady for the fourth straight year and use increased revenues from higher assessments to cover pay increases for town employees and higher health-care costs, under a fiscal year 2019 budget proposed

by Town Manager Mercury Payton.

The $38.5 million budget overall would be 6.1 percent higher than the adopted one for fiscal 2018. The general fund would go up by 4.7 percent to $25.35 million, the debt-service fund would increase by 16.6 percent (largely due to rise in meals-andlodging-tax revenues) and the water-andsewer fund would rise by 5.9 percent, but the stormwater fund would decrease by 4.9 percent.

The proposed budget would hold the town’s real-estate-tax rate steady at 22.5 cents per $100 valuation.

“For seven years, we’ve had the same rate or lower,” said Payton, who was hired by the town in May 2011.

Residential property values grew 4.5 percent this year and non-residential ones increased 7.3 percent. The average residential real-estate-tax bill would rise by 5 percent ($81.85) to $1,637.

Vienna property owners also pay Fairfax County real-estate taxes. County Executive Bryan Hill in February proposed increasing the county’s real-estate-tax rate

by 2.5 cents to $1.155 per $100 valuation, which would boost the average property owner’s bill by $268. The county also charges residents, including ones in Vienna, a stormwater-service tax, which also is based on real-estate assessments.

Vienna’s commercial-vacancy rate has averaged 9.8 percent over the last three years and is far lower than the county’s 15.5 percent rate, town officials said.

Most town employees who met performance expectations would receive 3.5-percent pay increases under Payton’s budget. Wages for 27 Vienna Police Department employees – specifically, those with the ranks of officer, officer first class and master police officer – would increase 5 percent, as the town is trying to recruit more officers by offering competitive pay.

Health-care costs are expected to increase 18 percent, necessitating an additional expenditure of $220,800.

The town’s payroll would stay essentially flat at about 187 full-time-equivalent employees (the actual figure is 186.63).

Changes include the retirement of one street-maintenance employee and the addition of a half-time water-operations worker and a full-timer working in stormwater administration.

Salaries and benefits account for about 73 percent of the town’s general-fund expenditures and health insurance consumes another 6 percent, said Finance Director Marion Serfass.

Town officials propose to spend about $890,000 to replace 11 vehicles in the coming fiscal year. Vienna leaders are working on a longrange capital-improvement plan and have identified unmet service needs that may require funding in the future, Payton said.

“As each year passes, the town looks at ways to be more efficient in terms of service delivery,” he said. “But there are new requests that come in for things we haven’t done in prior years. In coming years, those [unmet needs] probably will become more urgent.”

The Vienna Town Council will hold budget work sessions March 17 and 19 and a public hearing on April 9, then adopt the fiscal 2019 budget May 7. The new fiscal year will begin July 1.

Vienna/Oakton Notes VIENNA PREPS FOR SPRING STREETCLEANING EFFORTS: Another sign

that winter is a fading memory: The Vienna town government kicks off its spring street-sweeping efforts on March 19.

The initiative aims to remove salt, silt, sand and other debris that has accumulated during the winter.

To ensure that streets can be cleaned as thoroughly as possible, town officials are asking residents to refrain from parking on streets during a section’s first scheduled sweep. Residents also are asked to place debris, trash, sticks, yard waste and receptacles on top of the curb during that time period, leaving the street open.

“No Parking” signs will be put in place about a week prior to the scheduled sweeping of specific corridors, town officials said. Residents will be able to park on roads during subsequent sweeps of neighborhoods, conducted through the spring and summer.

PROPOSALS SOUGHT FOR MURAL ON SHOPPING-CENTER WALL: The Vienna

Public Art Commission, Vienna Shopping Center Limited Partnership and developer Rappaport are partnering to bring an approximately 2,500-square-foot

mural to the rear of the Rappaport-managed Vienna Shopping Center at Maple Avenue and Courthouse Road.

The mural will be created along approximately 200 linear feet of the rear of the shopping center, and will be visible from Cottage Street.

The town government’s Public Art Commission has issued a call for artists to create the mural embracing a “Small Town, Big Community” theme; artist qualifications and concept submissions are due March 31, with the mural’s development expected in late spring or early summer.

Criteria for selection includes creativity and appeal of concept presented, and how well it connects with the community.

The timeliness of installation and proposed cost also will be considered.

“We’re so excited and grateful that Rappaport was willing to underwrite this public art effort,” says Virginia Public Art Commission member Lu Cousins.

“We can’t wait to see how Vienna’s ‘Small Town, Big Community’ way of life plays out in the mural. This and other public art efforts will, we know, add just a little more color and depth and richness to our community.”

Home Values Increasing, But Pace of Growth Slows Home-value growth across the country is increasing – but at the slowest pace in 15 months – according to the January Zillow Real Estate Market Report. And that could be good news for prospective purchasers and, perhaps, the market as a whole.

Over the past year, home values rose 6.7 percent to a median home value of $207,600, according to data released in late February.

In May 2017, national home values were rising at their fastest pace since the housing bubble, up 7.6 percent year-over-year, but have since slowed, dropping about a tenth of a percentage point each month since last summer.

Going into the spring home-shopping season, buyers may find a slight relief on prices, but should expect higher mortgage rates to lead to an increase in monthly costs.

“The pace of home value appreciation we experienced during much of last year was not sustainable, and a slow glide path down to a more normal appreciation rate has been expected for some time,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas. “This slowdown is nothing to be overly concerned with; demand from home-buyers remains very high, and inventory remains tight.

New-home construction is growing, providing some relief to buyers.”

Markets with the greatest home value appreciation are in the West. San Jose, Las Vegas and Seattle reported the greatest home value growth over the past year.

In San Jose, home values rose about 23 percent – about three times faster than its historic pace – to a median home value of $1,202,900.

Tight inventory remains likely to put a strain on buyers this home shopping season, even more so than last year, and while new-home starts have increased about 7 percent over the past year, a positive trend but still insufficient to meet demand.

Mortgage rates gradually increased throughout the month of January, starting at 3.77 percent and ending at 4.04 percent, the month high.

Whatever the situation called for, Jordyn Callaghan provided the necessary spark and production during her standout girls high school basketball career for the Langley Saxons the past four seasons.

The senior point guard’s highly accomplished prep playing days are finished – capped March 8 when Callaghan and Langley finished second in the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournment for the second time in three seasons.

In a state semifinal game two days earlier, Callaghan made the gamewinning walk-off three-pointer. Prior to that, she sank the go-ahead free throws in a one-point first-round state tourney victory. That’s quite a finale, as the senior knows how to leave the building in grand fashion.

Late-game heroics of whatever type of effort was needed dotted Callaghan’s years. The take on Langley was if the game was close at the end, Callaghan would do something to produce a victory. Often, she did.

Langley head coach Amanda Baker knew what she had in Callaghan.

She designed a Callaghan-led offense that was low scoring but with limited mistakes. Her late-game instructions to the point guard were basic phrases like “finish this” or “win the game.”

Callaghan often complied.

During her four years, Callaghan led Langley to its most successful stretch in program history. Langley won three district-tournament crowns, a region tourney and a region runner-up, two seconds in the state, four straight seasons of 20 wins or more, an overall record of 93-24, which included a playoff mark of 26-7. The season before Callaghan arrived, Langley won just six games.

This year’s success came with four new starters joining Callaghan. That’s quite the career.

A disappointing two-point overtime loss in the state-championship game meant the seaBASKETBALL son didn’t end the way the Langley High School girls basketball had hoped.

The Saxons lost to the Cosby Titans (24-4) of Chesterfield, 52-50, in the March 8 state final, held at the Siegel Center in Richmond.

Langley finished with a 21-8 record (7-2 in the playoffs), won a Liberty District Tournament title as the No. 3 seed, followed by a runner-up in the Northern Region 6D tourney and a 2-1 record in the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 competition.

“It was a great ride,” said Langley senior forward Rana Azad, who led the Saxons in scoring with 17 points in the state final to go with four steals and three assists. “As the season went on, we got better.”

thing like that in March,” Gjormand said about the ranking. “We’ll take it, but if we’re there June 9, that would be fantastic.”

June 9 is the date of the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament championship game.

Madison returns one starting position player this season in James Madison University commit Kyle Novak.

“We do have the Pitcher of the Year [Jake Nielsen] coming back and a pretty good pitching staff. We’re excited,” Gjormand said.

A year ago, Madison finished 22-3, won a fifth straight Liberty District tournament championship and lost

in the region tourney semifinals to eventual champion Oakton.

This season, however, there will be new faces and new foes Madison will face, as the Warhawks have moved to play in the tough Concorde District.

“There’s no more Liberty, we got kicked out of that. Unanimously, by the way, that was pretty cool,” said Gjormand, starting his 23rd season as the Warhawks’ head coach and needing three victories to reach 400 career wins.

“I’ve been fortunate to be around these guys [for so long], and we’re all just excited about the process,” Gjormand said.

Oakcrest School senior girls basketball player Colleen Beatty finished her career by scoring 826 points for the Vienna private school.

In addition Beatty set two school records this season – most points in a single game with 30, and most points in a single season with 336.

In 23 games this season, the forward averaged 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. She had 73 steals, 18 assists and nine blocked shots. Beatty made three three-pointers. She was chosen second-team all-conference.

Her 826 career points were second most in program history.

Beatty has been accepted into the engineering program at Virginia Tech.

Glass has launched the BenGlassLaw Varsity Soccer Sportsmanship Challenge, including a number of boys and girls high school teams for the upcoming spring season. Madison and Oakton high schools are included.

Glass will donate $500 to each team to use as it wants (up to $1,000 per school) if that squad completes the season without receiving a red or yellow card as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Glass has been a soccer referee in Northern Virginia since 1974. In the last 10 years, he has witnessed a steady decline in high school soccer sportsmanship and respect for opponents and sports officials. He says the deterioration of sportsmanship has led to a shortage of soccer referees. Glass hopes his challenge will reverse the trend.

“I got a pass from Hallie [Jepsen] and didn’t have much time. But I was at least trying to get some kind of shot up there to give us a chance,” Callaghan said.

In overtime, Langley had a 50-46

lead with 2:36 left. The Saxons didn’t score again and were hurt by three turnovers in the last 1:50. Cosby won on a layup by Marissa Gallagher off a pass from Covington with two seconds left.

Langley’s ensuing inbound passes were tipped out of bounds, then intercepted.

“They were packed in the lane when I drove. I saw Marissa out of the cor-

ner of my eye and passed her the ball.

It wasn’t a great pass,” Covington said about the winning basket.

Gallagher gathered the high pass and scored. “I caught it under the basket and was trying to find the backboard,” she said.

Callaghan had nine points, six assists, three steals and two blocks. Carly Britt made three three-pointers and scored 11 to go with six rebounds for the Saxons; Jepsen had six points, and Lauren Maloney had five points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Langley was 13 of 22 from the foul line, Cosby 9 of 11.

“We played hard and fierce,” Langley coach Amanda Baker said. “It’s a twopoint game, so it hurts.”

Baker agreed that the Saxons improved and played better together the longer the season went.

“We are a real program. By the time the players are seniors here, they are ready,” Baker said.

March 20 then at Marshall March 22, before heading to Florida to play even more tough opponents during a springbreak tournament March 26-30, facing at least two powerhouses in IMG Academy and Westminster Christian Academy.

Lake Braddock (No. 4) and West Springfield (No. 9) also are ranked in the NOVA Baseball Magazine’s preseason top 10.

Last year, Madison was upset by Fairfax in its season opener.

“If you look back at the time I’ve been at Madison, we’re probably .500 in openers,” Gjormand said.

When asked about Madison’s tough early-season schedule, Gjormand said: “We might not win a game until May, but we’re okay with that.”

Other top players for Madison this spring are expected to be left-hander pitcher Matt Howat, Nate Leas, Johnny Hecht (pitcher), Ethan Lipp, Sam Kobayashi, Casey Counts, Josh Gjormand (pitcher) and Brendan Sweeney.

At the March 4 media event, the coaches and players from the magazine’s top 10-ranked preseason teams discussed their squads and the upcoming season. The event was well attended, including players and coaches from non-ranked teams.

In the 2018 state final, Langley took a 9-2 lead, led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter behind eight points from Azad, and went into the locker room ahead 26-22 at halftime.

“They [Langley] dictated the game early, and we had some sloppy passing,” Cosby coach Rachel Mead said.

Cosby rallied in the third period behind the scoring of Nia Covington, who had a game-high 25 points, including 19 in the second half. Langley trailed 38-37 at the start of the fourth quarter.

County government’s Environmental Quality Advisory Council (EQAC) is in the process of selecting a student member to serve on the council from July 2018 through June 2019.

Council member Douglas Noble, a transportation engineer who previously served on the town’s Planning Commission, is the body’s newest member, having joined in 2016. Noble said in January he aimed to be an effective steward not only for what the town is now, but for what the

Voters may cast absentee ballots for the Vienna election from March 16 to April 28 at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax. The only thing new with this May’s election will be its polling location. Town officials held the past two years’ elections at Vienna Presbyterian Church while the Vienna Community Center was being renovated. With the center’s grand reopening last fall, the town will be moving the May 1 polling place back to the community center.

The Town Council consists of six members plus the mayor, all of whom serve two-year, at-large terms. Three members’ seats are up for election the first Tuesday of each May and mayoral elections are held on even-numbered years.

Council members earn $5,000 per year, but the mayor takes home $7,500 because of additional obligations, including office hours. The re-elected members’ new terms will begin July

Public-Safety Notes MAN ROBBED AT GUNPOINT AT TYSONS GARAGE: A local man was in the

parking garage at Tysons Corner Center, 1961 Chain Bridge Road, on March 4 at 11:45 p.m. when he heard two men talking and walking behind him, Fairfax County police said.

One of the men, described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and around 165 pounds, started to run after the resident, police said. The suspect then brandished a firearm and took money from the victim’s pockets before running away, police said.

There were no injuries reported.

ARMED ROBBER STEALS MONEY FROM VIENNA-AREA DRUGSTORE: A

man entered the CVS drugstore at 3053 Nutley St. in the Vienna area on March 2 at 12:10 p.m. and demanded money from the cash register, Fairfax County police said.

The suspect displayed a firearm to the store employee, but no one was injured during the robbery, police said. The suspect, who made off with an undisclosed amount of money, was described as black, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed between 190 and 220 pounds.

INTRUDER PUNCHES VIENNA-AREA HOMEOWNER: A homeowner living in

the 9200 block of Hambletonian Place in the Vienna area told Fairfax County police on March 8 at 11:34 a.m. that he had heard a noise in his home.

When he went to see what it was, he saw a man, who then punched the homeowner and ran from the scene. No items were taken from the home, police said.

The suspect was described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, wearing an orange hoodie, grey or tan khaki pants, and dark boots. He had short hair, was about 6 feet tall, and weighed about 190 pounds.

ROBBER TAKES MONEY FROM OAKTON CONVENIENCE STORE: A man

entered the 7-Eleven store at 2973 Chain Bridge Road in Oakton on March 4 at 3:20 a.m. and demanded money from the clerk, Fairfax County police said.

The suspect, described only as wearing dark clothing, then ran away from the store with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

VIENNA POLICE OBTAIN ARREST WARRANT IN HIT-AND-RUN CASE: Two ve-

hicles were traveling westbound in the left lane on Maple Avenue, W., on Feb. 13 at 5:51 p.m. when they slowed with traffic in front of 415 Maple Ave., W., Vienna police said. A third vehicle approached and

struck the rear of one of the slowed vehicles, forcing it into the rear of the other car, police said.

The driver of the striking vehicle then pulled into the parking lot of 415 Maple Avenue, W., and stopped for a brief moment.

The motorist in the struck vehicles remained in the roadway and waited for police and for the motorist in the striking vehicle to exchange information. But that motorist abruptly exited the parking lot and continued westbound on Maple Avenue.

Police later located the striking vehicle and obtained an arrest warrant for its driver.

MOTORIST INJURED BY FALLING TREE IN VIENNA: A motorist was traveling west

in the 300 block of Maple Avenue, E., on March 2 at 9:08 a.m. when a tree fell on his vehicle, Vienna police said.

The driver was trapped and had to be extracted from the vehicle by the fire department, police aid.

Emergency personnel transported the man to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Police determined the driver could not have avoided the crash and no charges have been placed.
