Vienna’s mayor and three other Town Council incumbents announced Jan. 29 that they would seek new terms in the May 1 election. Mayor Laurie DiRocco, who will vie for a third mayoral term, said she had tried to remain accessible to the community through regular office hours, Friday-morning walks and frequent speaking engagements with local groups. “I believe to be an effective mayor, you obviously need to know Vienna and how local government works, but you also need a desire to serve the community and the citizens,” she said. “I think that’s why many of us are on Council. Also critical for me is support from my family, because there are many nights when I’m not at home.” DiRocco first was elected to the Council in 2009, was appointed mayor in the spring of 2014 following the death of her predecessor, M. Jane Seeman, and that May was elected a full term as mayor. DiRocco ran unopposed for re-election in 2016. “Over the years, there have been very few topics that all citizens agree on,” Di-

Fiscal year 2018 is halfway over and the town of Vienna is bearing up well, even with some revenues falling short of last year’s marks. Finance Director Marion Serfass gave the Vienna Town Council a mid-year financial review at a Jan. 22 work session.
