Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Rappahannock Electric Cooperative is a member-owned utility that provides electric service to over 170,000 connections in portions of 22 Virginia counties. REC is committed to connecting members and communities with safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions.

But what is an electric cooperative and what makes REC different? The cooperative is owned by the consumers it serves, meaning member-owner needs are first priority. Cooperatives are like families with everyone dedicated to helping and supporting each other. Two of those family members are First Class Lineman Chuck Tippett and Manager of the Western Region John Arp. Chuck is dedicated to making sure your power is available 24/7 and will work to resolve any problem, even if it’s midnight on Christmas Eve. He is also a member-owner just like other REC customers, dedicated to service. John is all about making sure the technical resources are aligned, the design for the new service is enduring and that linemen like Chuck have what they need to make sure member-owners have what they

need. Both John and Chuck and all REC employees are problem solvers who work with service in mind. Service, not profits, drive all the employees of REC. They live and work here too, and like you they are part of the family.

Cooperatives make long-term investments and plan for efficiencies with members in mind. That means decisions are based on both short-term and long-term needs of customers and employees, not stockholders. For example, did you know REC has drones to help find remote line breaks? The drones also help find problems quickly, keeping linemen out of remote and dangerous terrain. Cooperatives were started to serve and connect remote customers, like farmers and mountain residents, who big companies did not want to service. These humble beginnings are why REC cares so much — it’s part of their DNA. REC also is more forward thinking by implementing systems that will not only last longer but will serve its members longer. Just like family, it’s about relationships, trust and community.

That’s what Tim and Johncie Carlson want you to know about them: They are a full service studio right here in Downtown Culpeper, where you can see what is possible and learn how they can help you pass on a memory.

Tim and Johncie are the right combination for each other — and the right combination of art, expertise, support and vision to help create images that connect you to your family, your friends and the rest of the world. Tim started his photography career by taking wedding pictures at his hometown church. He went on to become the area’s only Certified Professional Photographer and remains so to this day. When not creating beautiful images Tim and Johncie still perform in local theater and make music part of their routine.

Music inspires his process and he often plays music while working. “It brings out emotions and feelings that come through the lens and onto the image,” Tim says. “It brings forth your true self or the image you are trying to portray.”

Why is that important? Because Tim wants to show you and your life moments in the best possible light. In fact, Tim draws inspiration from playing with bright and dark, shadow and light, richness and muted. The Culpeper Rose Wallace Rose Wallace wanted to have purpose, wanted to serve, and wanted to feel proud at her job as she helped people. As Director of Marketing at The Culpeper she has found a place where she can do all that and more. With a background in healthcare administration she helped start and manage private medical practices, including a new Senior Care Geriatric Medical Center in conjunction with Mary Washington. Through geriatric care is when she found her calling and purpose in life. Her mom told her she always had an old soul and both grandparents lived with Rose’s family so the family could manage their care. “I grew up learning Seniors are the wisest people who have amazing life experiences and knowledge to share. I grew up respecting my elders.”

Rose discovered what would eventually become The Culpeper, Lifespire of Virginia. On the legacy-rich grounds are independent living cottages, assisted living apartments, a memory care neighborhood, a restaurant, gaming parlor, a chapel, a gym, a cafe, transportation, a full calendar of activities, the list goes on and on. But when Rose found out no one outside of the local area knew about the community or assumed it was for Baptist’s only, she realized why she was called to Culpeper: to spread the word, to make a difference in the lives of the residents and to change perceptions of retirement communities. Rose, alongside the dedicated staff, is committed to service and creating a place that not only cares for seniors and their families but is a place the town of Culpeper can be proud of and potentially call home. DOING BUSINESS IN CULPEPER COUNTY Economic Development of Culpeper Phil Sheridan Phil Sheridan is the Director of Economic Development for Culpeper County. But if you ask him he’ll say his job is all about building relationships to foster a business-friendly environment.

The multi-department team includes Phil as well as Lori Loy from the County, Dave Reardon from the Small Business Development Center, and Paige Read from the Town. Their combined efforts cover the spectrum of economic development facets from large industry to small business, from entrepreneurism to tourism, and from County to Town. This team believes the Town and County are stronger when they combine their efforts and interconnect their programs. When businesses are looking for resources or answers, they don’t care about boundaries. The Economic Development team works to minimize boundaries so companies can focus on their business.

The forward-thinking County and Town leaders have planned investments in Culpeper to manage the inevitable growth while maintaining our relaxed and elegant quality of life. Some of these investments are directed at the development of a

strong workforce to support local industry and prepare our young people for rewarding careers. Z leads the Flamingos, a group that meets monthly to work on community projects, collect coats and “adopt” a needy child for Christmas. She also contributes to Angel Trees for Seniors and the local toy collection and distribution drive.

Z loves the community and believes she is here to serve others. It shows in so many ways. EYE CARE

Eye Care of Virginia Dr. Miles Press Dr. Miles Press has been helping people see better and feel better for over 48 years. It all started when he was 16 years old working for local optometrist in his hometown in Harrisburg, PA. From there he went to optometry school in Boston and then served as a Captain in the Air Force Flight Surgeon’s Office making sure all the pilots could see correctly. He also started his own contact lens company, developed the first tinted soft contact lens, and helped developed special tints to help patients with eye deformities. He’s also worked for several large retailers as an independent optometrist and been on several medical missions in Peru to provide vision care to remote villages. He has seen it all and to say he is experienced all is an understatement.

Dr. Press eventually made his way to Culpeper at Eye Care of VA where he cares for over 10,000 people between two locations.

He enjoys helping people save their vision and with today’s

technologies he can diagnose eye disease quicker and more accurately, fix complex vision issues and treat eye problems associated with Diabetes. His specialty is contact lenses and can fit you for any activity or to fix various eye issues. Dr. Press is calm and caring, will follow through care over several years and has made a difference in the lives of his patients. That has made him proud to be an optometrist. He is still very active with Vision with a Purpose fitting underprivileged kids with glasses purchased from the Lion’s Club. Making sure people can see no matter what their background or income has truly been his life work and brings him joy. His wife Greta had a dream about an Ark and realized it was meant to explain her husband’s work: random acts of kindness. And that is why he was voted Culpeper’s Best of of the Best for several years and why his patients love and trust him.

Wellspring Health Services Wellspring was created in Culpeper out of absolute necessity for the residents of Culpeper and the surrounding counties.

While the president of the medical staff at Culpeper Medical Center, Dr. Khalid Athar observed first hand as people used the emergency room for urgent and primary care services and not purely for emergency services as the name implies.

He observed patients needing to travel an hour or more out of town for lack of access to most specialists. He also observed the gap in care between urgent or episodic care and primary or chronic care. So three years ago Wellspring was created, a hybrid and combination of primary care and urgent care for the residents of Culpeper. Open seven days a week, 12 hours a day with complete care all in one place and in one practice.

This new model means shorter wait times for patients, care is consistent and traced, patients don’t have to travel out of town, and follow-up treatments are more accessible. Ten thousand plus people commute out of town so access to care outside normal doctor’s office hours is a necessity, Wellspring proudly fulfills. Wellspring is open late and over the weekends and holidays when care is needed.

This might seem crazy but less than three years later Wellspring has grown to four service locations in Culpeper, and one in Madison with 12 different specialties like Dermatology, GYN, Mental Health, Pediatrics, Neurology, Weight Loss, Nutrition, Pain Management, Podiatry, ENT,

Endocrinology, etc. The community has embraced this new kind of comprehensive health care closer to home. No need to travel out of county for high quality care and that is a perfect fit for Culpeper.

Dr. Athar is optimistic and dedicated to solving problems. From an early age he knew he was going to be a physician, he has always wanted to help people and take care of people. “Every ‘problem’ is an opportunity to create and affect change,” said Dr. Athar. But the larger message is Wellspring is your healthcare partner. The Cameleer “What is a cameleer?” you may ask. A cameleer is the leader of a camel train. For Susan Bernhardt, the word “cameleer” evoked a vision of strings of camels trekking along the Silk Road, trading in exotic goods from earlier times. And for Bernhardt, “The Cameleer” seemed a natural name for a one-of-a-kind store.

It all started in 1992. A small offering of Australian Aboriginal goods was sold in 100 square feet on East Davis Street in Downtown Culpeper under the name “Kungaku Arts,” the aboriginal Pitjantjatjara word for “women’s.” The initial Australian crafts sold were carved wood lizards and dot painted pottery from Central Australia. Didgeridoos, authentic boomerangs and aboriginal paintings rounded out the collection.

Since then, the product selection has grown to represent more than 80 countries and has moved and expanded five times on the same block to become The Cameleer at 125 East Davis Street.

The product mix is in constant flux with the ebb and flow of traditional craft. Not only do the products need to be produced, but craftsmen must also master the complexities of wrapping, packing, filing paperwork and navigating the red tape of exporting their goods to America.

Because of requests and suggestions, The Cameleer’s selection has expanded beyond Central Australian artifacts to include jewelry, clothing for men and women, linens, tableware, housewares, stationary, and anything else that might catch your fancy. Belmont Farm Distillery Chuck & Jeanette Miller Prohibition is over and we are still celebrating. FLORIST Endless Creations Steve & Chris Cone Steve Cone grew up on a cattle farm and planned to go into the family business, but when the family sold it, he realized he needed another plan. His grandmother suggested he learn about plants and greenhouses, which led to Steve joining the FFA and later, meeting his wife, Christina. Since college the pair have always worked together in local greenhouses and later started their own landscape design and installation company.

Endless Creations has existed for 30-plus years. It first started as a hobby selling high end fresh holiday centerpieces, traveling to larger towns to sell fresh florals at craft shows with two kids in the back of the car underneath all of the plants.

Steve and Chris opened their first retail floral shop on Sunset Ln in 2014. Just a little over a year later Endless Creations moved to their current location at 211 W Evans St. after buying out Randy’s Flower’s when Randy Jones retired.

MUSEUM Museum of Culpeper History Morgan Pierce Morgan Pierce is the Executive Director of the Museum of Culpeper History - the best small-town museum in Virginia. A Virginia native and James Madison University graduate, Morgan grew up enamored with state and local history. From an early age he knew he wanted to do something history-related and in Culpeper he found a way to share his passions while helping the museum develop programs and exhibits that serve the residents and engage visitors.

Morgan also furthers his own education being in an area rich in history and learning from residents who share their own anecdotes.
