The NAACP Culpeper Branch recently awarded five scholarships to area high school students.

Eastern View High School students ,Kanieicia Booker, Aralyse French and Kris Patel, received scholarships.

Booker plans to study psychology at Virginia State University, and her ultimate goal is to become a child psychologist.

French plans to study English at Virginia State University, and her ultimate goal is to return to Culpeper to teach low-income, underrepresented students.

Patel will attend the University of Virginia, where he will pursue degrees in biology and computer science. After college, Patel plans to pursue a career that works to make the world better through agriculture.

Popular BBQ food truck puts down roots Started in 2015, Burnt Ends will become a permanent fixture downtown.

Culpeper’s favorite Texas pulled pork and brisket are coming to downtown Culpeper with the plan to set up shop in its own brick-andmortar restaurant.

“It’s exciting,” said Burnt Ends Owner and Pitmaster Maria Riojas.

“It’s nerve-racking as well, but it’s very exciting that everything that we’ve put in place and planned for is starting to come through.”

The ever-so-loved mobile eatery will open on the ground floor of the Lord Culpeper Hotel on South Main Street across the way from Shenandoah Garden Spot. The prospective opening date is late July.

Riojas opened Burnt Ends in 2015 via its first mobile trailer, which now sits stationary on James Monroe Highway. Due to the great reception from their dedicated customer base, the restaurant soon grew to add two more trailers to travel to area wineries, breweries and weddings.

Although the plan to open up a restaurant was always the plan, Riojas said the volume at which Burnt Ends is currently producing made them finally pull the trigger.

“We’re booked six months to a year in advance with the mobile trailers,” she said. “We’re at a point where that is running smoothly, so now we’re ready to take it to the next step.”

The eatery's signature menu stemmed from Riojas’s husband Ronnie, who grew up in Texas eating at his father’s barbecue restaurant in Austin.

“It’s really a family business,” Riojas said. “The Riojas family has been in the food industry forever.”

After moving to Virginia in 2010, the pair would smoke brisket at home and invite neighbors over to enjoy it.

The food was so well received, people began to tell them they should begin selling it.

Community aids local music leader When COVID-19 struck the Jewell family, their loved ones sprung into action.

Jewell Tone Music has helped and inspired countless musicians in Culpeper, but when owners John and Carla Jewell became sick with COVID-19, it was time for the roles to reverse.

The week of Nov. 8, both Jewells were diagnosed with the virus, with John Jewell suffering the worst of it.

When his oxygen dropped to 70, explained Jewell Tone Music Administrator Lynda HenryHammond, Carla Jewell called paramedics who refused to enter the home. After dragging him to the door, he was admitted to UVA Culpeper Medical Center with COVID pneumonia in both lungs where was intubated and sedated for several weeks.

When he was brought out of sedation, he aspirated and contracted bacterial pneumonia in both lungs.

Again, he was intubated and sedated.

Due to his declining status, on December 20, he was transferred to Bons Secours Memorial Hospital in Richmond where he received a

After months and months of emotional and physical hardships, Henry-Hammond approached the Jewell’s children in April about putting on a fundraiser to help ease the family’s financial burden via a music benefit.

In total, the Jewells accumulated

over $2 million in hospital bills, but thankfully have insurance to help pay down some of the hefty total, only for more expenses to arise.

“He battled for five and a half months,” she said. “Between the copays, gas has gone up, the medical bills that are coming in, (we) wanted to try to give back a little bit for what they have done for the community.”

On June 4, students, families and

music lovers turned out to Unionville Brewing Co. LLC to open their hearts and wallets to help raise funds so that John can continue to receive the medical care he needs such as the daily visits to Fauquier Hospital for IV infusion of antibiotics.

The event has live music from Jewell Tone students and friends, a 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

In total, Henry-Hammond said,

Elementary club holds celebration A.G. Richardson’s “Becoming a Man” (BAM) Club held a celebratory spaghetti banquet on June 1.

The BAM Club is open to 4th and 5th grade boys with an overall theme of treating others with respect.

Chairman of Culpeper County Board of Supervisors Gary Deal spoke as the keynote speaker about the importance of being a positive male role model.

During the celebration, a video played where each boy explained their favorite moment in the club, three things they had learned, and explained the importance of the club principles.

After the meal, each boy received a certificate of completion and a gift, a tiepin that was engraved with the 3-letter club name “BAM.” The club started to give the boys at AGR an after school club to compliment Girls On the Run, which was only open to the girls in the school.

Each meeting had a lesson topic

which included tying a tie, dress etiquette, classroom etiquette, table etiquette, hygiene, sportsmanship, respecting women, bullying, and social media use. Guest speakers came to club meetings, including Culpeper County High School Principal Dr. Daniel Soderholm and Eastern View High School Head Football Coach Brian Lowery.

AGR Physical Education teacher Donald Downs chose the name of the club based on the influence of his former football coach at Averett University, Cleive Adams. Coach Adams’ program motto was BAM, which stood for “Be a Man.” The BAM Club has seven principles: Strong Moral Foundation, Respect for All, Disrespect for None, Give Back, Selfless Attitude, Compete In Life, Be A Gentleman and W.I.N (What's Important Now). The boys learn these principles throughout the year so that they may use these skills as they grow from a boy into a young man.

development of a data center, which is a permitted use in the area’s technology corridor.

The Culpeper County Planning Commission reviewed the application during a meeting on June 8. The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors will vote at a later date whether to approve the rezoning request.

According to his application, Martin intends to market the property developers for the development of up to three data center structures.

Phase A of construction would consist of a single-story structure of a maxim of 337,500-squarefeet. Phase B would consist of two single-story structures for a total of approximately 945,000-squarefeet. The proposed buildings will be approximately 45 feet high, including water tanks and equipment located on the roof.

Nonprofits fight through formula shortage Local families can look to nonprofits for help.

Parents living across the country share a common struggle recently in the grocery store. It’s not due to rising food costs, however, but a baby formula shortage. Local nonprofits and community groups kicked it into high gear to make sure no baby goes hungry.

Despite beginning due to pandemic-related supply chain issues, the national baby formula shortage became exacerbated in February when Abbott Nutrition, largest baby formula manufacturer in the country, initiated a voluntary recall of powder formulas including Similac, Alimentum and EleCare.

The recall has been especially difficult for families enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), according to Executive Director of Mom2Mom Kirstan Knipple.

“WIC automatically defaults to (the) Similac brand, so when the recall hit and all the stores pulled Similac from their shelves, the families receiving WIC benefits needed a substitute, which became Enfamil and other brands,” Knipple said. “Then you have the families who weren’t getting WIC who use Enfamil and other brands now trying to find their formula too.”

Area nonprofits tasked with helping families in need have felt the rope tightening as well. Some organizations, however, are better positioned to provide help. “(We) have been fortunate enough to have formula on hand for clients if they need it, so the shortage has not greatly impacted us at this moment,” said Executive Director of Services to Abused Families Cindy Hedges.

However, SAFE has started to feel the burden of the shortage within the last three months.

Before the shortage, the organization aided 15 families with formula.

“Currently, due to the shortage, the need has increased to our clients and other agencies we have working relationships with,” said Hedges.

Abbott ceased production at its Sturgis, Michigan plant because of contamination concerns. A Federal Drug Administration investigation found four infants who were hospitalized with bacterial infections after consuming the formula. Two of the babies died.

On June 4, Abbott resumed production and is aiming for an initial product release around June 20.

Local resident Leah Bradley started one such Facebook group.

“I started it because I saw other yard sales and local community pages posting and asking for formula or breast milk,” she said. “This was an opportunity to try to localize it to one group for consistency and for families of formula or breast milk dependents to come together to help one another.”

Bradley created the group entitled Central Virginia FED IS BEST Co-Op on May 12 and already has nearly 200 members.

“The response has been amazing,” she said. “Whether it’s offering formula one has, a breast milk donation and even seen in the wild posts, such as ‘Hey, Culpeper Target has XYZ formula if anyone is looking for it.’”

SAFE’s continued biggest challenge remains making sure its pantry continues to have formula.

“Unfortunately, donations have slowed down on formula, so anyone who can donate, it would be greatly appreciated,” Hedges said.

Knipple shared a similar plea.

Soap Box Derby goes back to its roots Strengthening family unit reigns paramount.

t, Life lessons come in all shapes and sizes. Be they on the playground or in the conference room. For Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby drivers and their parents, those lessons start on the track.

As an instrumental influence on most of those lessons, derby committees - made up of both adults and juniors - hyper focused on mentoring drivers and parents on both construction and principles of racing for many years.

This year, though, they’ve taken a backseat.

Hundreds of drivers have taken to the raceway since the annual event was founded in 2003 as a celebration of Rosson & Troilo’s 75th anniversary.

After returning last year following being canceled in 2020, the race will return again on June 18 at the Paul Bates Raceway and admission is free for spectators.

According to Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby Vice President Frankie Gilmore, when kids and parents first sign up for the derby, they wonder if they'll even be able to make it across the finish line after seeing the mountain of work.

In past years, committee members have taken those teams by the hand and helped them through the hurdles rather than guiding collaborative learning throughout the family unit.

Families, Gilmore noticed, have lacked the strength needed to overcome and tackle challenges and by participating in the Derby’s new outlook, hope to change that.

Reverting back to the original modes of operation of the derby with a more hands-off approach, she continued, will only help to strengthen relationships between parent and child, which has only been a driving factor in the race’s continued success. While the feat

Why The Derby?

First, let’s take a stroll down Memory Lane! Our grandfather, HB Rosson, in 1928 had a vision, dream and a passion to start a business to provide automotive service for Brandy Station and surrounding communities. For the next 75 years, those same qualities & passions were passed down in our family for 4 generations. So, in 2003, my sister Frankie and I decided we wanted to give something back to the community and to the families that had supported our family for the past 75 years. “Why the Derby?” In discussion it was a no-brainer. The Derby had all the characteristics and qualities our family and business deemed important – plus, our father had built and raced his own soap box derby car in the 30’s!

Since 2003, there have been many ‘WHYs’ as to the continuance of the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby. The town officials and citizens opened their arms to our venture of turning Blue Ridge Avenue into a Soap Box Derby racetrack, at each turn and obstacle during the planning, we were met with success and continued support for the drivers and their families. In hindsight, we all thought that we would run “A” derby for one year; that would be it, just one. We were AMAZED during that first derby...Why? The support, the passion, the enthusiasm, and the excitement of our drivers and families was overwhelming; We had to continue! The next day the committee started planning for the 2nd Annual Soap Box Derby. . . . And then another ‘WHY’ – Why did we build a permanent track? Yes, we realized that moving from Blue Ridge Avenue to our present track facility at Paul Bates Raceway would cause some accessibility issues. However, the move has brought many benefits to our local Derby. We now have access to grow, hosting more racing events for our local families and visitors from out of the area, while hosting spring and fall rallies – which bring in families from up and down the east coast to Culpeper for a weekend of racing – visiting, touring and shopping in our

community while here from Friday to Sunday. Our facility also provides STEM education opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students, all wrapped around building, aligning and then racing a soap box derby car. Something my sister and I never realized when we established the derby was the educational aspect that the derby would bring to our community, it truly has taken us to another realm.

While building and racing a soap box derby car, we discuss gravity, force-in-motion, friction, aerodynamics, geometry, and physics to name a few.

We will still send the winners of each division to Akron, Ohio to race in the World Championship Race in July. However, in our eyes – every one of our drivers is a Champion! They have gained Life Skills that they will carry forward in life. They will learn perseverance, determination, respect for themselves and those around them, and more importantly they will learn sportsmanship, win or lose.

They will work with their hands to build a race car... then align it using theories of geometry... discuss elements of physics with other drivers and adults to fine tune it... and then race it - working alongside their families the entire time. Every year we see family bonds strengthen and self-confidence increase.

And then, at the top of the track, just prior to releasing both cars, each driver looks over at their opponent and wishes them ‘Good Luck’. Wow, these young drivers exemplify sportsmanship at its finest. A perfect example of this is the picture on the front of this section. Pictured is Emily Maley, Alana Durica and Sophie Morris – all three raced against each other for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in their division. Can you guess who the winner was? Looks like all three were winners in my eyes.

So, WHY the Soap Box Derby?

Because over the past 19 years we have seen the Derby add to the Quality of Life for our community and surrounding area: The strengthening of the Family Unit, the bonds built between parents and children, and the life skills taught.

A project-based learning experience while enjoying All-American Wholesome Fun for the entire family . . . it doesn’t get any better than that!

On the cover The Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby will host its annual race down Paul Bates Raceway on June 18.

Water quality impacts summer activities BY

As temperatures rise throughout the Commonwealth, residents look to local watering holes for some haven from the heat. With both swimming and fishing on the top of the list for many, the water quality of Lake Pelham and Mountain Run reservoirs comes into question.

According to data presented by the United States Environmental

According to more in depth data, uses for both swimming and boating along with aquatic life were categorized as good while drinking water and fish and shellfish consumption had an unknown condition.

Culpeper has 13 waterbodies, 40 monitoring sensors and one permitted discharger, according to data.

The permitted discharger is the Culpeper Wastewater Treatment Plant. It has had no significant effluent violation within the last three years and has had no formal enforcement action in the last five years.

Mountain Run Reservoir, an approximately 73 acre waterbody off of JB Carpenter Jr Drive, is impaired, as determined by EPA. According to the agency, “Waters are assessed as impaired when an applicable water quality standard is not being attained. Impaired waters require a total maximum daily load (TMDL) or alternative restoration plan to reduce pollutant loadings and restore the waterbody.”

According to more in depth data, uses for swimming and boating are impaired. Aquatic life is deemed good while drinking water and fish and shellfish consumption are unknown.

The body was deemed impaired due to Escherichia Coli (E. coli), however, has had a plan for restoration since April 2001.

In a report from EPA Water Protection Division Director Rebecca

Hanmer to Larry Lawson of Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the overall Mountain Run watershed is approximately 58,000 acres. The TMDL pinpoints 7.58 miles of Mountain Run as being impaired by elevated levels of fecal coliform.

As reported by the EPA, 103,433 acres of Virginia lakes and reservoirs have been deemed good for recreational use. Only about 2,000 acres have been deemed impaired for the same use.

In terms of fish consumption, over 87,000 acres of Virginia lakes and reservoirs have been deemed impaired while about 15,000 acres are deemed good.

Powell promotes water safety Powell’s event is for adults and children who would like an introduction to swim skills.

In a fun event with a serious focus, the World's Largest Swim Lesson will be held on June 23 to promote the importance of swim lessons to support water safety.

Now in its 13th year, this global event will be taking place at hundreds of aquatic centers, swim schools and waterparks.

Powell's event is for adults and children who would like an introduction to swim skills and water safety.

With many pool closures and lack of lesson availability during 2020 and 2021, it is even more important to focus on swim skills. A 2021 research released by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that drowning has become the leading cause of unintended death for US children ages 1-4.

After an event intro, age-based groups will participate in a circuit of activities in the pool such as a skills assessment and learning to float. They'll then use their new skills to enjoy a rubber duck float game in the lazy river.

During the event's wrap up, participants are welcome to enter Powell's water safety coloring contest by drawing a picture of a water safety tip.

Free Clinic of Culpeper earns gold rating The Free Clinic of Culpeper earned a 2022 Gold Rating from the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) Quality Standards Program. This is the third year the clinic has earned the rating since the program’s inaugural year in 2020.

“We are proud to have received this top rating, which reflects the commitment of our staff and volunteers to providing quality care for our patients,” said Clinic Director Tammy LaGraffe.

As a member of NAFC, the Free Clinic of Culpeper voluntarily submits information to the NAFC on the various policies and procedures in place to attain their standards rating and attest/pledge that they successfully incorporate these standards within their organization.

Over the last year, the Free Clinic of Culpeper has expanded support to its patients with new initiatives that include garden boxes on site for harvesting of fresh vegetables; a diabetes/hypertension

Queens of Culpeper Downtown drag shows bring out different types of people for entertainment.

Drag queen shows under the direction of Richmond-based drag queen Bianca Blake Starr have been popping up around Culpeper for nearly a year.

Wigs, makeup, rhinestones and lip-syncing are what’s in store for attendees of Culpeper’s most successful and seemingly underrepresented entertainment gig.

“I was expecting to not be received very well, but at every (Culpeper) venue that we’ve worked at, the people have probably been some of the best crowds that I’ve had in all of the different cities that I work in,” said Richmond-based drag queen Bianca Blake Starr. “I’ve worked all over the country and, I have to say, it is one of the most receiving cities that I have worked in.”

Drag queen shows under the direction of Starr have been popping up around Culpeper for nearly a year.

Starr and Jackleg co-owner Gina Rivas met a few years ago when another queen had asked Starr to join her at a show at Noodleheads, a now closed restaurant at 201 S East St.,

where Rivas was the DJ. After Noodleheads closed and Jackleg opened in September 2020, Rivas reached out to Starr to bring drag back to Culpeper.

“She reached out and said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a venue. I’d love to start something and see how it goes,’” Starr recalled.

Starr, who was recently crowned Miss Pride Virginia 2022, and husband, Kevin Jones, are the owners of the Queens of Culpeper and have recently decided to expand their venture into an entertainment company called Dominion Divas Entertainment.

After signing on with Jackleg last year, their inaugural Fourth of July show completely sold out, sparking Catalano’s interest in hosting the queens once a month.

“It just got so popular after about six months, we started doing the double seating,” Starr said.

“It kind of took off from there.”

Starr got her start over a decade ago in Richmond when a local bar heard her sing karaoke “as a boy” and invited her back to sing live. When she showed up in street clothes, she noticed everyone was dressed up.

“When I got there, I was like, ‘Why are all these women done up in all this makeup and costuming?’” she recalled. “And then I realized they were all men.”

After some styling, she did her first performance in drag.

After traveling around the country performing, Starr said, Culpeper is one of the most accepting and enthusiastic areas.

Despite receiving push back from some online when announcing shows, Starr said, fans come back harder to defend them.

“From day one, we’ve had support,”

she said. “The amount of uproar the community does to defend us is unbelievable. That’s why I’ve continued to come back.”

Show attendees, she continued, range widely from man-woman couples to families to members of the LGBTQI+ community.

The shows at Jackleg at 110 East Davis St. are held the first Saturday of every month, usually beginning at

5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The girls can also be found at Fraternal Order of Eagles Culpeper #4551 on Brandy Road every three months and brunches at Rixey Manor beginning the weekend of June 11.

To celebrate the show’s first anniversary, the queens will again host a Fourth of July show on July 2.

Starr said shows are a mixture of all types of drag entertainment like lip syncing and comedy.

“We like to get away from the norm, and make fun of each other and make light of all the terrible things that are going on in the world right now,” she said.

Life has come full circle for this lad. In 2001, when I first walked into the large meeting room of the Culpeper County Library, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

At the urging of former Culpeper Mayor and Human Services Director Calvin “Chip” Coleman, I made a career jump from sports editor and feature writer to Culpeper Parks and Recreation coordinator for a senior citizen-focused group named the Silver Club. Over two decades later, I have evolved from a young father and gonzo journalist into a slightly calmer man that will soon join the seniors club he has grown to cherish.

The first week of June, I will turn 55-years-old. I will be qualified to join the Silver Club.

As a kid, I was blessed to share a home with my beloved greatgrandfather Walter, who lived with my family from my birth to my middle school years. Walter had a lovely kind heart, played ragtime piano, and walked miles each day.

He was an avid chess player and read many books about the universe. His long lifetime stretched from the year Geronimo surrendered into the early 1980s.

Walter served as an additional “older” father figure in my life — he taught me many life lessons and filled a major role in my life when my father was deployed in the Army.

step grandfather were all World War II veterans, depression era men who believed in hard work, honor, and lots of humor. They were all unique men, and my grandmothers were equally colorful and fun.

I share this only because I think it made me appreciate maturity, wit, and perspective greatly. Always look a person in the eyes, never prejudge them by the weathering of their skin or age.

Many people ask why I enjoy working with senior citizens and children — the second component is for another column. The simple answer is both groups are honest and straightforward, it’s the alleged adults in between that tend to be shadier with the motives. Both groups are fun.

Initially, I figured I could be entertaining enough and provide the Silver Club with a fun forum to laugh, build friendships, learn new things, and hear from a variety of speakers from our community and beyond. Soon, I realized the power of the club’s membership made it great.

Over two decades there have been many challenges including recession, layoffs, funding, and a pandemic that closed the Silver Club for over a year. Through creativity and dedication, we managed to keep the Silver Club growing and evolving.

A smile crosses my face when I think of the first day, I coordinated the Silver Club.

I was once a relatively young whipper snapper — but in June I will be a member of the coolest seniors’ club in the world. the club a special place — so many characters living and deceased made it a joyous place each Wednesday. Since day-one I have had the steady advice, leadership, and calm voice of Richard Paape there to help make the club better each week. In recent years, Rita Nickles has invigorated the club and enhanced our speaker program with people and topics that promote new learning opportunities, health, cultural enrichment, and mindfulness in maturity.

As I prepare to join the Silver Club, I cannot begin to convey how much perspective, life lessons and happiness this club has provided.

Sadly, today’s culture tends to overemphasize youth culture, discredit or even worse dismiss the skills, wisdom, perspective and needs of its mature citizens. Senior citizens are an incredible resource within a community — their knowledge and skills should be recycled and used as foundations to improve all our lives.

As this year’s birthday

approaches, I’m going to tilt my cap and proudly join the ranks of a club that has taught me so much about life and how to deal with it.

Growing old is never guaranteed.

With over half a century notched I don’t leap the river rocks like I used to—yet I am not ready to wheel a walker into the stream yet. I realize my beard is growing white, my back gets sore, and children often tell me I’m balding.

Before I tell you about Sebastian, let me tell you my history with cat carriers. The first time I made the trip to the vet, I was a very small and trusting kitten. I rode in a picnic basket and enjoyed the ride.

By the time we made the second trip, my Widow had invested in a carrier with mesh windows so I could see out, although there was nothing to see but the dashboard and door handles. She soon suggested the two of us could take cross-country trips. She would drive, and I would ride shotgun.

We took practice spins around town. Then my native instincts kicked in. Wait a minute, I said to myself, “I am a cat, and cats are born to vigorously protest being

put into a cat carrier. It’s what I must do.”

From that time on, whenever the cat carrier came into the room, I shifted into escape mode. There were three beds to hide under, a sofa, chairs with skirts, and closets.

When my Widow approached, I went from one to another as quickly as a hare. Several times, she canceled the vet appointment because I wore her out. The last time, however, was different.

After the initial chase, she pretended to give up and take a nap. I celebrated my victory. But no sooner had I settled down to snooze then she got up and ambled from room to room closing doors.

She offered me a treat. I suspected

nothing. Until she picked me up. Instantly, I knew I had been hoodwinked, but with all those closed doors, I had nowhere to go.

Then I heard about Sebastian, a distinguished tabby who rode to his vet sitting in the passenger seat like a human. Straight up, so to speak. Why in the world would he do that, I wondered. The answer was simple. Sebastian had diabetes and had to make so many trips to the vet, he decided to do it on his terms.

Further, when he arrived, his human opened the car door and Sebastian hopped out and trotted up the sidewalk like he owned the place. AND he “manned up” to his insulin shots. I might have faked

seizures or run for cover. But not Sebastian. It’s possible he is the one who originated the saying, “It is what it is.”

I know Sebastian’s story makes you wonder, but it’s true. Sebastian was a living, breathing cat who did exactly what I said. His human said he was one of a kind. I’m inclined to agree.

Not a goodbye as the work continues BY

As I am in my last month as president of Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., I want you to know that I will always be one to promote our downtown community. Culpeper welcomes all to enjoy the downtown area. We offer many local owned merchants and restaurants. Our volunteers help us in providing great family fun in our downtown area. We raise funds for downtown improvements and to decorate our streets, examples are the string lights, banners, and flower baskets.

Exciting things are happening in our downtown area for the rest of this year. We started in May featuring First Fridays through the month of November. Merchants will be open later than their regular hours and offering specials, look for the balloons. Downtown guest will enjoy the extra lighting that we are providing as they stroll between shops and our restaurants. Tourism will be joining us in setting up special events in the parklets and Depot area.

Come be a part of the downtown celebration this summer. Enjoy great food and stroll in our shops as part of the festivities.

The Farmer’s Market will continue through the month of October. It is set up in the Culpeper Baptist Parking lot on West Street. We have had some new vendors join us this summer as well as the ones you have been enjoying the past few years.

The program teaches children about choosing good foods. Bring your children and have them help you choose good locally grown food.

Leonardo da Vinci. Everyone knows his name, and a quick google search will help anyone recognize his skill. He lived his life as a famous artist but was nevertheless recognized as a scholar. Everyone knows Elvis Presley’s name, but not many know he started his career as an electrician. Arguably an even more excellent example is the likes of Henry Ford. He started his career

as a mechanist and left it as one of the most formidable yet impressive, businessmen and manufacturers of the industrialized age. These wellknown artists and scholars grew from a foundation in a skill, a trade if you will.

Many can argue that these leaders in industry would have been just as successful without their trades, the skills they learned are no more useful than a lesson in philosophy, or mathematics.

However, the hands-on learning experience, and practical abilities they gain directly helped them in their field. Henry Ford’s time as a mechanist led to the Model T, Leonardo da Vinci gained skills

in design, and even Elvis Presley learned the way of electricity and technology which helped him learn to make rock and roll a revolution of the 20th century.

I want to be a scholar. A scholar with skills. I have recently been certified in AutoCAD, however, I am currently a student at Mount Vista Governor’s School, and I inevitably plan to become an attorney. The relationship between law and technology may not seem innate, but patent law and intellectual property law require a deep understanding of such.

The knowledge I have gained also gives me a new route of growth, and a new perspective of the world

and how I can help impact my community. Just like the famous individuals listen above, I do not plan to use my trade as a career.

However, I understand it doesn’t have to be, the purpose of a trade is to serve my community, and I plan to do just that.

A common theme amongst aging organizations, and here at Aging Together, is something we call “Positive Aging.” It is basically the idea of adopting a positive view of aging as a healthy, normal part of life. And it’s the mindset that you will do whatever is needed to continue doing the things that you love and are important to you as you grow older.

But so many of us instead seem to focus on the losses and changes that sometimes occur with the aging process. And, it can certainly be a challenge to remain positive with all the negative stereotypes that surround us – projecting older adults as frail, confused, needy, and worse!

Research shows how we actually internalize these negative stereotypes and end up viewing ourselves in this negative light – and believing this is inevitable.

In actual fact, we can choose to engage in Positive Aging – and in changing the way we think about our own aging. Here are some tips: • Stay physically active by doing at least 30 minutes of movement or exercise every day.

• Exercise your brain by engaging in mentally challenging activities, and never stop learning new things.

• Adopt an overall healthy lifestyle by eating healthfully, getting enough sleep, managing weight, and not drinking in excess or smoking.

• Stay connected to other people by nurturing relationships with your spouse or partner, family, friends, neighbors, and others in your community, including young people.

• Create positive emotions for yourself by practicing positive emotion exercises and learning to feel good about your age.

• Set goals for yourself and take control of the steps needed to achieve them.

• Minimize life stress; practice healthy coping techniques, and learn to relax and unwind.

• Have regular medical checkups, take advantage of health screenings, and engage in healthy preventive behaviors.

Paying extra attention to your health as you grow older is an essential part of aging well.

Spending time outdoors is good for all ages, but especially beneficial as you grow older. There are a variety of activities during the summer months that offer older adults the chance to get some exercise and enhance their health and lives. And, consider staying active this summer via fishing, walking, picnics and more.
