Heavy earth-moving equipment was called into play to restore Fort Belvoir to normal operating condition after last week's historic snowfall.

Heavy snowfall covers Belvoir By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Fort Belvoir residents spent much of this week digging out after heavy snowfall covered the area over the weekend. Snow from the storm, dubbed winter storm Jonas, began falling Friday afternoon and didn’t stop until Sunday. The official snowfall total for Fort Belvoir was 19.8 inches, said Chris Kim, superintendent of weather operations at Belvoir’s Davison Army Airfield. Snowfall amounts were estimated because the weather station was closed over the weekend, Kim said. The snowstorm also brought heavy winds at times, causing snow to blow into deep snow drifts in some areas. The highest wind gust at Belvoir was recorded at 32 knots, or more than 36 miles per hour, Kim said. Fort Belvoir garrison offices closed Friday afternoon, Monday and Tuesday and opened on a two-hour delayed schedule Wednesday as crews continued to clear main roads, residential streets and parking lots. Belvoir contracts with Aleut Corporation for snow removal and crews were working to remove snow and treat the roads throughout the snowstorm, said Chris Landgraf, Directorate of Public Works, deputy director. Crews treated roads during a smaller snow system that hit the area in the evening of Jan. 20 and began See SNOW, Pages A6-A7

The Federal Real ID Act of 2005 established minimum standards for stateissued driver licenses and ID cards, including requirements for a photograph and biographic information such as name, date of birth and gender, among others. States not compliant are Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington. The DoD has directed all installations to no longer accept non-compliant ID cards as primary means of identification to gain a pass for access to installations after the successful completion of a criminal background check as of Jan. 10. For FAQ’s about the act, including alternate acceptable documents, see www.dhs.gov/real-id-public-faqs.

Route 1 lane switches to occur this spring By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer

www.belvoireagleonline.com

Route 1 construction continues with no significant traffic changes occurring until spring. The northbound Accotink Creek Bridge is almost completed, said Tim Brown, construction operations engineer, Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division of the Virginia Department of Transportation. “We have one more concrete pour and bringing up the road to the final grade. We’ll get the traffic switched over this spring,” he said.

Drivers, going south and north, use the south-side Accotink Creek Bridge, which finished construction in July. Noise walls are being built along communities on Route 1. Those will be completed within three to four months. Other, smaller projects include installing drainage and stormwater management, and working on underground utilities. Eventually, there will be a lane switch near Pence Gate in May, he said. But, until then, there aren't any major switches other than daily, ongoing lane closures.

Before the lane switch near Pence Gate, Brown said there will be a community meeting and advanced notice about it. After that, the next significant traffic changes will occur in the summer, he said. Utility issues and the winter weather have pushed back the completion date from early 2016 to late fall. Since then, Guard Soldiers have escorted or transported 49 law enforcement, emergency medical and fire rescue personnel to emergency locations and transported 26 essential medical and support personnel to their place of work. They also provided mobility support to citizens and law enforcement for non-emergency situations; transported essential medical supplies; towed fire trucks stuck in the snow and conducted health and welfare checks. “I think our Soldiers are doing a fantastic job across the commonwealth in helping our state and local first responder partners get through the heavy snow to help their fellow Virginians,” said Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, Adjutant General of Virginia. “Working so closely with the Virginia State Police and local government emergency response officials, under the guidance of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, has proven to be very effective. Soldiers worked more than 30 mission requests from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to provide support to multiple localities and state police. Soldiers were deployed along the I-81 corridor between Lexington and Winchester; along the Route 29 corridor from Warrenton to Danville; and areas near Northern Virginia, Richmond, Fredericksburg and Gate City. More than 400 Soldiers from units of the 116th IBCT and from the Virginia Beach-based 329th Regional Support Group and Bowling Greenbased 91st Troop Command were on duty providing support. The Virginia National Guard also had more than 100 Soldiers, Airmen and members of the Virginia Defense Force on duty in Richmond, Sandston and Fort Pickett, where they provided mission command, administrative and logistical support for the overall mission. Governor Terry McAuliffe authorized up to 500 personnel for state active duty in his initial emergency declaration, and then increased that to 700.

Elias Medina, 14, drives his 4 year-old sister, Elissia, down the hill during another snow day at Fort Belvoir Golf Club Tuesday after the region was shut down by last week's blizzard.

U.S. Army Garrison Headquarters, Fort Belvoir, was quiet Tuesday as work crews continued to prepare to resume normal operations after a blizzard.

From Page A1 pre-treating roads Friday afternoon, after most offices on the installation released employees early ahead of the predicted snow fall. “We were able to use that opportunity to try to get ahead of it,” Landgraf said. ”As soon as the snow got deep enough that you can start to plow, they plowed it.” The amount of snow and the speed at which it fell Saturday made clearing the roads a challenge, he said. “The challenge we had with this particular snowstorm was the rapid-

ity with which the snow fell on Saturday and the gusts of wind that blew some snow back on the roads after we cleared them,” Landgraf said. “We were ready and prepared for this. It’s just such a large amount of snow, it takes some time to clear it.” Drivers worked 12-hour shifts throughout the snowstorm to clear roads and continued working to clear sidewalks and parking lots Tuesday night and Wednesday. “They are all looking forward to going home and getting some sleep,” Landgraf said. Fort Belvoir community members stayed up-to-date on snow removal ef-

forts on the installation through updates from the public affairs office, on Fort Belvoir’s website, Facebook page and other platforms. “The public affairs office made every effort to keep Belvoir’s residents and mission partners informed, using all of our communication platforms,” said Joe Richard, garrison director of public affairs. “We also appreciate people’s feedback and want them to know we do let leadership know of issues or areas that need improvement when we’re making our weather call and operating status decisions.”

Fort Belvoir community members check out the offerings of some 50 health and fitness product vendors and service providers at the installation’s annual Health and Fitness Expo, Jan. 21 at Graves Fitness Center.

Belvoir commits to health at Fitness Expo By Rick Musselman Sports editor Fort Belvoir community members dedicated to staying active and fit in 2016 started in the right direction by attending the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s annual Health and Fitness Expo, Jan. 21 at Graves Fitness Center. The event, sponsored by DFMWR sports and fitness, draws hundreds of participants each year and gives everyone who works, lives and plays on post a chance to learn about the benefits of cardiovascular fitness; discover the wide range of exercise programs available to the community and participate in a variety of aerobic and strength-training demonstrations. Throughout the Expo, fitness trainers and some 50 exhibitors offered specialized exercise activities and in-depth information and advice about fats, cholesterol and salt, and suggested ways to improve diet to minimize cardiovascular disease and obesity. Representatives of the American Red Cross answered health-related questions and a medical technician offered free blood

In the NFL, especially during the playoffs, nobody finds a blowout terribly exciting — even if the winning team is our own. Well, no team in this year’s divisional round has come close to shutting out their opponent. In fact, every contest has kept us glued to the screen right up to the final seconds. The fun began with the CardinalsPackers match up, Jan. 16. I wasn’t sure if Green Bay was ready to triumph over Arizona, a team that delivered the Packers a 38-8 loss in the same stadium in week-16. With injuries dogging critical zones of Mike McCarthy’s roster, it seemed likely the Cardinals would triumph, even though the Packers showed marked improvement against Washington the previous week. But leave it to Aaron Rodgers to find the slimmest opportunity in the dying seconds to keep his team alive. That he was able to get a Hail Mary pass into the end zone twice in nearly as many weeks seemed to defy all the currently known laws of random chance. But, just as suddenly, fortune shifted back in Arizona’s favor during the first possession of OT when Carson Palmer, who barely escaped the Green Bay pass rush, connected with Larry Fitzgerald who snaked his way to the 5-yard line. On the next play, Fitzgerald took a pitch from Carson, crossed the goal line and sealed the win to the astonishment of Packer fans everywhere. Next up, we have what I thought would be a fairly close Panthers-Seahawks game, especially considering Seattle’s performance a week early in the wild card round. So, when Cam Newton and company went to the locker room at half time leading 31-0, I thought, what’s going on here? One Sunday a team looks like a Super Bowl contender, and the next like a rag-tag squad on which the coach, the quarterback and water boy are the same guy. But all of a sudden, the Seahawks are within striking distance of winning the game, scoring 24 unanswered points. Indeed, Carolina barely made it out of that game. Even the Broncos-Steelers showdown was one I thought would be a no-brainer for Peyton Manning and company at home, at least until Denver receivers forgot how to catch a football until late in the second half, giving the Steelers every opportunity to win. And, like Denver, the Patriots had to rely on a last-minute TD from Tom Brady to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive. If anything, watching this year’s post season has been a great cardio workout.

More than 10 Fort Belvoir community members took to the water at Benyaurd Indoor Pool to learn the basics of kayaking, Jan. 20 as part of the DFMWR’s Fitness Week. The event, sponsored by DFMWR sports and fitness and Team River Runner, gave participants a chance to learn all aspects of the sport in a safe environment. Team River Runner is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to provide adaptive watersports and recreational opportunities to wounded Service members. Certified instructors, Zac Taylor, Charles Duffy and Eric Guzman, conducted the two-plus hour training session and taught students the mechanics of balanced paddling, steering, righting an overturned kayak and maintaining safety. Military personnel and civilians on Fort Belvoir learned the basics of archery during an introductory skills class, Jan. 20 at Outdoor Recreation, as part of DFMWR’s annual Fitness Week. More than 10 people attended the class, hosted by certified instructors. The instructors regularly conduct training for archers of all ages and experience levels at the Tompkins Basin facility throughout the year. It included instruction in archery tackle handling and safety, aiming and shooting techniques, and bow types. The session wrapped up with archers applying those techniques in target shooting. The clinic was part of MWR’s annual Fitness Week, a health and wellness promotion that offers a variety of sports- and nutritionthemed events, including water aerobics; yoga; a healthy food competition; auto safety; and basketball and volleyball tournaments. For information about Fort Belvoir’s archery programs and other recreational activities, call ODR at 703-805-3081 or visit http://belvoir. armymwr.com/us/belvoir/programs/outdoor-rec reation.
