Stafford to hold first Christmas parade
The holidays are a time for families to get out the lights, bulbs and garlands and decorate trees to create a festive atmosphere inside the home. Others take on a much bigger project and spread that atmosphere to the outside of the house. An evening drive along the streets and roads of Stafford County can find a sparkling wonderland of lights and statues reflecting the holiday spirit. The Blackadar family at Saint Jacquelyn Court, just off Saint Roberts Drive, in North Stafford has been decorating their house for the past 14 years. Each year the display gets bigger, said John Blackadar, and now there are about 500 lights. The work takes about five to six hours over two days, he said. ALEKS DOLZENKO| STAFFORD COUNTY SUN
County to quick-take land for Rt. 610 widening TRACY BELL
Stafford County Sun
The Stafford County Supervisors agreed Tuesday to allow the condemnation and quick-take of 15 properties and businesses along Garrisonville Road in order to move forward with the road widening project. The businesses and properties are all in the Garrisonville or Griffis-Widewater districts. The board voted separately and unanimously on each property, with the exception of one property that resulted in a 6-0 vote. Stafford Supervisor Jack Cavalier, I-Griffis-Widewater, recused himself from that vote based on having a business relationship with the owner.
The affected properties are all along Garrisonville Road between the intersections of Shenandoah Lane and Onville Road. Many of the properties are private homes, while a few, such as Wawa, are businesses. Each property owner was able to negotiate with the county on individual offers. Two other properties, Mike’s Diner and Professional Collision Center, are also on the list of properties to overtake, but they won’t be affected by a utility easement. Staff members also recently met with them to address concerns, so the votes did not include those properties. A total of 39 properties have been affected by the planned widening.
Twenty-two of them signed condemnation and quick-take agreements prior to Tuesday’s vote and four of those signed since November’s public hearing on the matter. Chris Rapp, director of public works for the county, said of Mike’s Diner that “technically the building could remain, and remain a restaurant, but it would be difficult with the impacted parking.” Several proponents of saving Mike’s Diner spoke at the meeting, explaining that the proposed condemnation is unfair and many people are upset. There is also a Facebook campaign to save the diner. Janet Silvado, who is BOS PAGE 5 employed with the diner, said
The first Stafford County Christmas Parade will kick off Saturday evening at 5 o’clock. The participants will stage at Stafford Middle School and continue to Brooke Point High School, a distance of ¾ of a mile, according to parade organizer Gordon Shelton. The parade will not be on Courthouse Road. The best place to watch the parade will be at the high school, Shelton said. The location should be well lit and allow the floats to stand out in the evening, Shelton said. He expects about 70 groups to march in the parade, which should last around two hours. Retiring Stafford County Sheriff Charles E. Jett will lead the parade, along with the newly elected sheriff, D.P. Decatur, and retiring Clerk of Courts Barbara G. Decatur. At the conclusion of the parade, floats will be on display at the high school, where judges will score the entries and award prizes. Santa will be riding in the last unit and then go into the high school for photos with children and parents. Student organizations from the high school will serve chocolate and cookies as a fundraiser, Shelton said.

Stafford Historical Society offers Langley ornament Did the Aerospace Era begin in Stafford County? It certainly could be argued that way, according to Jane Conner of the Stafford County Historical Society. It was 120 years ago next year that Prof. Samuel P. Langley tried a manned, engine-powered flight from the deck of a houseboat on Chopawamsic Creek in Stafford County. A second attempt was made before the Wright brothers’ fight in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Unfortunately, Langley’s flights did not include a successful landing of his “aerodrome” craft. However, the first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier was named in Langley’s honor. This year the Stafford County Historical Society’s historic ornament, the 13th in the series, honors Langley’s spectacular attempts, Conner said. It depicts the houseboat launching of Langley’s

POLICE REPORTS
Stafford man charged with beating his mother to death Elizabeth Ellis, dead from blunt force trauma to the upper body, Kennedy said. “Our prayers and condolences go out to the Ellis family,” states CHRISTOPHER ELLIS Sheriff Charles Jett. “This tragedy is one that no family or individual should ever have to endure.” Christopher Michael Ellis is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
Man charged with attempted murder of woman, daughter A jailed man was indicted on attempted murder charges after he used a jail phone to hire a hit man to kill a mother and her 13-year-old daughter. Tyrone Maurice Warren, 22, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of criminal solicitation to commit murder and two counts of attempted murder, Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office spokesman Bill Kennedy said. The 13-year-old girl and her mother were involved in a previous incident with Warren. In August 2015 Warren was charged with one count of sodomy by force of the 13-year-old female and placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail. That trial is set for January 2016. On Nov. 24, Detective Bob Parsons uncovered information, as part of an ongoing investigation, that Warren was attempting to pay money to have the pair killed.
Over the next two weeks, Warren, calling from the jail, contacted an undercover law enforcement officer who was posing as a “hit man” TYRONE WARREN to broker a deal to kill the two. Warren was willing to pay $5,000 to have the pair murdered, Kennedy said. Detective Parsons presented his findings to the Stafford County Grand Jury on Dec.7. The Grand Jury then indicted Warren. The two intended victims never faced danger or were harmed in any way, Kennedy said. Tyrone Warren is currently incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Onville, Garrisonville roadwork underway Construction work has started at the intersection of Garrisonville and Onville roads in Stafford, to build additional turn lanes and a pedestrian crossing, according to VDOT. Onville Road traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted to the east side of the road. By shifting traffic, construction work can begin on the west side of the road. The $14.9 million VDOT project will build double left turn lanes on eastbound Garrisonville Road for traffic turning onto Onville Road. Triple left turn lanes will be built on Onville Road for traffic turning onto eastbound
Garrisonville Road. A pedestrian crossing will be installed on the north side of Garrisonville Road, crossing Onville Road. Most lane closures will be scheduled to occur overnight to avoid peak morning and afternoon travel times. Motorists should stay alert for temporary traffic patterns, workers, cones and barrels at the intersection. The work zone speed limit is 35 mph. The project’s estimated completion date is May 2017. The project contractor is J.L. Kent and Sons, of Fredericksburg.

A 38-year-old Stafford County man has been charged with first-degree murder in the Friday morning beating death of his mother. Deputies were called to 532 Fagan Drive in the Falmouth area at 5:09 a.m. for a man yelling, screaming and “acting strangely” in his backyard, sheriff ’s office spokesman Bill Kennedy said. “After assaulting a deputy and a brief struggle with the responding deputies, Christopher Ellis was taken into custody,” Kennedy said. When deputies checked the house, they found the man’s mother, 67-year-old

“It could have been a unity-building event, but it wasn’t and ended up like being punched in the face.” That’s what you get from the allknowing elitist media types who dictate policy for profit from gullible conservative lemmings while never having the intestinal fortitude to actually run for office and represent the community themselves. Breakout sessions such as “Protecting the 2nd Amendment in the Commonwealth” to “The war on American energy” were frankly expected conservative fare, but sadly little was done formally to focus on the badly needed issue of minority outreach other than comments from the dinner speaker, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. Steele repeatedly stated that core conservatives need “leadership.” Allow this observation: Military men and women are led in battle and commanded in garrison. “They” need leadership. The other 99 percent of the civilian electorate does not want to be led. They seek responsible representation and when they don’t get it, they kick officials out of office like Dudenhefer once was. Responsible representatives have figured out the leadership comes from the voters. Those who listen are elected. You may think it is to friends, but Facebook’s settings are Byzantine and easy to get wrong. You may not know who is seeing your posts. A common setting is to allow not only your friends to see your posts, but also the friend of friends. Who knows what some of your friends’ friends are about? Even leaving the house for a few hours can make you vulnerable. Ever make a note in Facebook that you’re watching a film at a theater, or brag you are at a concert, or a NASCAR race? So what can you do? Don’t post while away from home. Wait until you are home to post photos or even mention you’ve been away. Finally, to judge how widely your posts are getting out there, reverse stalk yourself. That is, use an Incognito Tab on your browser and Google your name, your name and employer, your name and city etc., to see what others can find out about you. The Incognito Tab does not send cookies to Facebook and others telling them who you are, so it makes for a search as someone else would see it. North Stafford boys hit the reset button DAVID STEGON

The North Stafford boys’ basketball team is, well, lively. It was just two years ago the Wolverines won only four games, but with second-year coach Brett Lively on the sidelines, North Stafford has seemingly hit the reset button with hopes of qualifying for the regional tournament. After beating Courtland at home on Tuesday night, 66-35, North Stafford sits at 5-1 with the lone loss coming to Colonial Forge, the two-time defending state 6A champions. Not bad for a team that started last year’s 13-9 campaign with just two players with varsity experience. “In some ways, coming in after just that season gave me a clean slate to work with,” the 34-year-old Lively said. “This program and the previous coach had a lot of success until that one year, but it gave me a chance to put in place the systems I like to play.” Lively has deep basketball roots in Stafford County. He starred at Stafford High School in the late 1990s, leading the Commonwealth District in scoring his senior season on the way to firstteam conference honors. He then went to play at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg where he was a fouryear starter, three-year captain and the 12th player in school history to score 1,000 points. He spent seven seasons as an assistant at Stafford and another as an assistant at Brooke Point before being hired at North Stafford. He preaches a defensefirst approach despite his days as a prolific three-point shooter. This year’s team builds off the success of last year’s group. a freshman. The super-athletic Asiedu also plays defensive end and tight end for the football team and received a scholarship offer from the University of Virginia with more Division I offers surely coming in. Joining him are two newcomers. Jamal Harris is in his first season of high school basketball, but played several years of AAU. Lively said he has a feel for the game beyond his limited experience and has already shown a deft scoring touch, scoring 21 points, including a buzzer beating game-winner, Dec. 11 against Mountain View. Also joining the team is Darian Shaw, a 6-4 small forward that played on the team two years ago,

but was not at the school last season. “Those newcomers add to the core of last season’s team,” Lively said. “Our goal is to just keep improving each game heading into the conference schedule and the playoffs. We also try to have a lot of fun in the process.” Joining Lively on the sidelines is another familiar face for local basketball fans: Steve Spicer, the former coach at Stafford High School, who has amassed 418 wins over 35 varsity seasons at various schools. He is also Lively’s father. “When I applied, I told him the only way I would take the job is if he would join me,” Lively said. “He’s a great resource to have and

bounce ideas off. It’s also great to just spend that time with my dad. Sometimes we talk basketball stuff, sometimes nonbasketball stuff. It’s just great to have him around.” Dave Stegon can be reached at info@staffordcountysun.com.

Jones returns home to play for the Eagles DAVID DRIVER
For the Stafford County Sun
T.J. Jones is now at his third college. But the third school is the charm for Jones, a 2012 North Stafford High graduate who has returned home to play for the Division III Eagles of the University of Mary Washington. “I am loving it,” said Jones, a shooting guard who was named the school’s athlete of the month for November. “It gets me closer to home. I am closer to my son, who is seven months.” Jones was leading the team in scoring at 17.4 points per contest in games through Dec. 11, as he made more than 41 percent of his three-point shots and 44 percent of his field goal attempts while also averaging 3.1 rebounds per contest. He had nine points, three assists, two steals and four rebounds in an 82-61 win over Penn State-Harrisburg on Dec. 5. That improved the Eagles to 5-2 overall. Mary Washington will get a taste of the big time on Dec. 18 when they play at William and Mary, a Division I member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe is one of the best teams in the CAA and began the season with a win at North Carolina State, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. “I think we have real good potential,” Jones said of the Eagles. “We have to emphasize defense. We have to get better on the glass. We are a little short at the guard position. That is OK if we play defense.” Jones, an all-region and second-team all-state player at North Stafford, is used to playing at a higher level. He began his college career at St. Thomas Aquinas,

where he played in 28 games as a freshman and started 24. He averaged 33.6 minutes and 13.8 points per game, and had 45 assists and 22 steals and shot 36 percent from the field. Earlier this season St. Thomas Aquinas, a Division II program, blasted Division I St. John’s by 32 points in an
exhibition game. Jones then transferred in 2013 to Slippery Rock, a Division II program in Pennsylvania. Last season he played in 13 games and averaged 2.5 points per contest for The Rock. “It is the best basketball (league) I have played in. I can say that,” Jones said of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Stafford resident dealt with a knee injury in 2013-14 at Slippery Rock and has welcomed a new start at Mary Washington under head coach Marcus Kahn. “He has given us everything we wanted from him and expected and needed,” Kahn said. “He has been just a tremendous addition to our lineup this year. He is certainly our best shooter. He has proven that game after game.” Kahn, in his second season as coach, heard from Jones last spring and learned of his plans to transfer. “The competition is a little drop off, but not too much,” he said of playing at the Division III level. “The thing I notice the most is the (lack of) size.” Earlier this season junior guard Jones went up against Lyndon White, his former North Stafford teammate. White is a junior point guard for Division III Lynchburg, and Mary Washington lost 77-72 to the Hornets in November in Lynchburg as Jones scored 16 points. Jones is the son of Lisa Smith and Warren Jones. He is majoring in business administration and accounting. Jones has one more season of eligibility after the current campaign.
