Center for resilience, SHARP opens

By Amanda Stewart Staff writer The new Resilience Training Center and SHARP Resource Center on Fort Belvoir officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, July 13.

The building, at 9515 Hannah Lane, Bldg. 1099, the old Logan Dental Clinic location, will serve as “a onestop shop” for resilience training programs for the National Capital Region and for Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention training programs, counseling and victim services on the installation, officials said at the ribbon cutting.

“Today is a great day for this Belvoir community,” Col. Michelle Mitchell, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir, commander, said. “We’re one step closer to achieving excellence in our ready and resilient mission.”

Last year, the installation opened its resilience obstacle course and the new resilience training center will add to that program’s success and better prepare the installation to provide resilience-related trainings and programs, Mitchell said.

“Whether it is meeting the needs of individuals, command teams, families, or providing training, this center has the capability of facilitating all of our reliance and SHARP needs and will allow us to offer high-quality services and support to our supported community here on the installation,” Mitchell said.

Belvoir’s new center is the 25th resilience training center to open Armywide, guest speaker Sharyn Saunders, director of the Army Resiliency Directorate, said at the ceremony.

Saunders said Fort Belvoir is a good location for a resiliency training .

“Fort Belvoir is a great place to host this training center … [because] Fort Belvoir touches so many Soldiers in our Military District of Washington here. It’s just such a great opportunity to have such a strong partnership with this installation and with the team here and be able to continue to facilitate the growth and development of our resiliency and performance skills across the Army,” Saunders said.

Resiliency and performance skills are key to developing personal readiness in military members and their families, Saunders said.

“When we talk about personal readiness, we are talking about the ability for individuals, or units, and for the Army to sustain their physical wellbeing; their psychological health; their social connections; and their spiritual development; as well as their family preparedness, so that families are encouraging Soldiers to continue their service and are also part of our ready team,” Saunders said. “So, it’s very opportune for us to set up a training center like this one where we can train Soldiers, where we can build unit cohesion, where our family members can come in and receive resiliency training.”

Half of the new building will house the resilience training center and the second half will house the SHARP resource center, where SHARP training classes will be conducted and where victims can go to report incidents and seek support services. The SHARP half of the building has private waiting rooms and restricted access for victims’ privacy once it is fully operational.

Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Bowens, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, the Pentagon, also a guest speaker at the ceremony, said it makes sense.

“It’s so fitting this morning that we have SHARP and resiliency in the same house because when you join the Army, the Army makes you strong.

And our resiliency team keeps you strong. So, we truly have a Soldier for life,” Bowens said.

The new SHARP resource center, the 15th of its kind In the Army, “is pivotal to the growth and development of our Army,” Bowens said, and will help the Army make strides towards the goal of “eliminating sexual assault from our ranks through prevention, prosecution, investigation, victim advocacy, and assessment and accountability.”

“I would hope that all of you are proud because our Army has come a long, long way and today marks a major accomplishment for the Belvoir community,” Bowens said.

Maj. Gen. Bradley Becker, commander, Joint Force Headquarters, National Capitol Region/Military District of Washington, also spoke at the ceremony, praising the leadership and team that helped develop and open the new training and resource center.

“All I would ask is that now that we’ve got this beautiful building, and this great resource center for both resiliency and SHARP, that we put that same team-level of leadership and effort into making this an effective place for our family members, our Service members and our DA civilians to come for resiliency and for counseling and continue to make this an effective place to be,” Becker said.

Van Noy Library hosts weekly activities for children in support of the “Read for the Win!” Summer Reading Program. Tuesdays at 2 p.m. is Teen Activity Tuesday with Ms. Katie, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. is Story Time with Ms. Lisa where children 5 and younger cab enjoy stories, activities and crafts.

Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. is School Age Activities with Ms. Sheri for children in kindergarten through 6th grade. Activities are Olympics- and Brazil-themed July 28.

Telegraph Road repaving

VDOT expects to start resurfacing Telegraph Road from the Fairfax County Parkway overpass to the ADF-E intersection, in areas surrounding Belvoir’s Telegraph Gate, beginning overnight July 31.

VDOT will remove and replace 2 inches of asphalt and re-install pavement markings. No work is expected at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Hilltop Village Center Drive.

Officials expect to start near the parkway and finish near ADF-E. All work on Telegraph Road will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and the contractor expects the job to last through mid-September.

Float in Movie

Connelly Outdoor Pool at the Officers’ Club, 5500 Schulz Circle, will show “The Good Dinosaur” for a Float in Movie Aug 4. Admission begins at 7:30 p.m. and the movie begins at dusk.

The cost is $3 per person and people can bring food and drinks, except alcohol and glass containers. Pool floats are allowed, but “lay floats” must be smaller than the user’s body. No registration required. Space is limited.

Aviation battalion hosts retirees

Sunrise Senior Living retirees got an up-close look at some of the latest aircraft from 12th Aviation Battalion July 13, at Davison Airfield.

“Everyone around us sees what we do in the air, but they never really get to see what the team is doing right here on the airfield,” said Capt. Terikazu Onoda, 12th Aviation Battalion assistant operations officer.

The 911th Technical Rescue Engineer Company brought their rescue truck to the event and two other companies brought in a VH60M Black Hawk helicopter, one of four in the Army inventory; and a UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter. The retirees were also able to try on gear Soldiers wore during operations.

Spence Armstrong, a retired Air Force lieutenant general, enjoyed his time with the unit. He was a pilot for 34 years and flew a variety of airplanes and helicopters during his years of service.

He spent a year at Fort Benning and flew with Army aviation there, Armstrong said.

“I learned a lot about the Army there, because we were advisers to the Infantry. So, I got my share of the Army and I’m familiar with it,” he said. But back then, he wasn’t pleased with the way airplanes were maintained, compared to now. Armstrong was pleased with the way 12th Aviation Battalion maintained its assets.

“It’s well-maintained,” Armstrong said about the aircraft the battalion used. “Which is important, because

The event is a great way for retired veterans to share experiences, and the Soldiers in the unit will benefit from the retirees’ stories, Onoda said.

“We stand ready to support anything going on in the National Capital Region, as far as air support,” Onoda said about the 12th Aviation Battalion. “When they see our aircraft flying around, we’re always training and we’re always ready to respond, whether we’re called from higher headquarters telling us to do something that’s directly mission related, or whether there is natural disasters and response needed to support the defense civil authorities.”

Because of the unit’s duties, it’s hard to put on community events.

Belvoir teens eligible for Women’s Equality Day essay contest

By Amanda Stewart Staff writer Fort Belvoir’s Equal Opportunity Office is sponsoring an essay contest in the hopes of inspiring community youth to think about the women’s equality movement.

Youth ages 14 to 18 are invited to participate in the EOO’s 2016 Women’s Equality Day Essay Contest.

Participants are asked to write an essay answering one of two questions, “How has the women’s equality movement impacted your life?” or “Where do you see the women’s equality movement in upcoming years?”

The essay winner will be recognized at the office’s Women’s Equality Day observance, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 25 at the Fort Belvoir Community Center. The observance will also include entertainment and remarks by guest speaker Lt. Gen. Flora Darpino, Judge Advocate General for the U.S. Army.

Women’s Equality Day is observed each year to mark the anniversary of the date the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was signed and women were granted the right to vote in the United States.

This year, the EOO decided to hold an essay contest to involve the community’s youth in the observance and to generate a greater understanding of what the women’s equality movement means today, said Sgt. 1st Class Nieasha Barnes, Military District of Washington equal opportunity adviser.

“This year’s event is a celebration of women’s right to vote,” Barnes said. “With the essay contest, we are hoping to get our teens to dig a little deeper and look at what impact women’s equality has had on their lives.”

The equal opportunity office holds observances throughout the year to mark things such as Women’s History Month, Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea to tie a youth essay contest into this month’s observance stemmed from a desire to involve more of the Belvoir community, Barnes said.

“We pride ourselves on continuing to involve the military and civilian populations … because it’s summer, we thought this would be a good way to get more of our teens and families involved, too,” Barnes said.

Barnes said she hopes the essay contest will challenge teens to consider the effect the women’s equality movement can still have on their lives today.

“Even though it seems like something that happened a long time ago, the women’s equality movement is still important today,” Barnes said.

Essays are due by Aug. 8 and a complete set of rules and submission information is available at Van Noy Library, 5966 12th St., Fort Belvoir. Essays must be twopages, plus a title page, and must be typed, double-spaced and in 12-point Arial font.

Prizes will be awarded for first place and runner-up essays.

National Guard helicopter task force bolsters Europe’s Special Ops

Larraine Whetstone Army.mil On July 11 a helicopter task force of four UH-60L Black Hawks and Soldiers from the Colorado, Utah and Kansas Army National Guard arrived in Illesheim, Germany, to support components of Special Operations Command Europe during training and exercises throughout Europe.

The mission, expected to last several months, is meant to allow National Guard Soldiers the chance to strengthen their unit deployment readiness while augmenting the training of U.S. and partner-nation special operations forces.

"Moving from a good idea around a water cooler to actually executing this idea gives the Soldiers an opportunity to focus on the training objectives of their customers (U.S. Army Europe, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and Special Operations Command Europe)," said Lt. Col Anthony D. Somogyi, task force commander and Colorado National Guardsman.

"This is a great mission for (National Guard) aviation, because we find ourselves being asked to work

with special forces in (global contingency operations) quite a bit, and this is another way we can work with them and figure out how to support them," Somogyi said.

As a direct support aviation task unit, the National Guard helicopter task force will provide Special Operations Command Europe with air movement support; static and military freefall support; and fast-rope insertion and extraction system capability. When not meeting Special Operations Command Europe requests, the task force will support the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and U.S. Army Europe.

This is the first phase of what is hoped to be an enduring mission set, said Somogyi. The helicopter task force is the "proof of concept" and is scheduled to rotate back to the U.S. in October. If approved, the aircraft will remain in theater to allow National Guard follow-on forces to gain experience and build readiness on longer rotations.

By the end of the mission, this first wave of National Guard Soldiers should have demonstrated their value, said Somogyi, and their capacity to support Special Operations Command Europe.

The summer series ends Aug. 19 with a performance by the Fairfax rock band Traitors N’ Thieves.

Kawamura center challenges community members to be fittest

By Rick Musselman Sports editor The Kawamura Human Performance Center, once again, aims to determine the fittest on Fort Belvoir with the 3rd annual Who’s The Fittest? Challenge, Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The two-person team competition — open to all active-duty military personnel, family members, and DoD affiliated card holders 18 and older — will test participants’ strength and endurance in a combination of power lifts, Olympic lifts, muscle endurance workouts and a short run. Categories include male, female or coed (ages 18-44) and masters male, female or coed (45 and older) that will compete in 1600m run, Max deadlift, bench press, 1000-meter row, hand-release push-ups, ground to overhead, burpees and clean ladder.

By Rick Musselman Sports editor With their carts bedecked with the flags of nations around the world, nearly 50 golfers took to the fairways and greens of the Belvoir Golf Club to compete in the Ladies Golf Association of Fort Belvoir’s annual Member-Guest Tournament, July 17.

The theme of this year’s competition, hosted by Fritz Diekmann, Fort Belvoir Golf Club PGA pro instructor, was the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and each team represented a participating country, with golfers wearing that nation’s traditional garb.

“With the Olympics coming up, we just had to do something to celebrate that,” said Carol Lucke, LGAFB publicity chair. “Each team chose a country and we decorated the carts with flags and props that represented the countries’ culture.”

Shamrocks adorned the Irish contingent; a stuffed kangaroo with her joey accompanied the Australian team; sombreros and piñatas were the order of the day for the team representing Mexico; and the Moroccan cart left the staging area fit for a sheik with its ornate draperies and red fez on the roof.

Ghosts in the neon

By Rick Musselman Sports editor Last week, I was driving up Route 1 and saw up ahead the spectacle of spinning wheels and flashing neon lights that only a carnival can produce. Now, for 1970s kids, those wonderlands of whirling colors and clanging sounds were among the most exciting destinations in those glorious days of summertime freedom. So, I just couldn’t resist turning into the parking lot.

I found a discreet spot near the entrance where a rotund man wearing a dingy brown derby sat on a stool taking tickets. I had no intention of paying $12 for admission and I certainly wouldn’t ride anything — somehow with advancing age came a more cautious attitude toward greasy machinery that’s set up and torn down a hundred times over the course of a summer.

Besides, people-watching can be as much fun as the Flying Bobs or the Zipper.

Of course, memories immediately began flooding my thoughts and, for a moment, I actually felt 10 again, seeing myself scampering along the midway in cutoffs, filthy sneakers and sticky hands from multiple candy apples. Within minutes, I was lost in the summer of 1976 when a big carnival appeared in an abandoned lot just down the hill from the house. I think my friends and I spent every evening there and we even made friends with the “carnies” who worked the rides and concession stands. Oddly, those people became such important characters in the story book of my early life that I still remember their names — the cowboy-hatted Bushy Pete; the creepily grinning funhouse attendant, Itchy; the denim-clad, 90-pound Bo Weevil; and the mighty Ski-Bo who’s 300-hundred pound presence spent every night lumbering around and reminding folks to “make sure to hit ‘dat duck pond before the night’s out.” They were people who made you wonder about their own childhoods and home towns and what life was like there.

At any rate, that brief stop at the neighborhood carnival was well worth it, and made me realize that those carnies from decades ago, who appeared once a summer from the shadowy margins of “conventional” society, left some of the strongest impressions. So, wherever you men and women are today, I’d like to say thanks. You’re my kind.

From Page B1 According to Diekmann, the tournament followed a shamble format, by which each competing team selected the one best drive among the members after teeing off. Participants then played their own golf balls from that position to the hole.

This year’s LGAFB Member-Guest Tournament also included three special contest holes — a low-score on the 15th, a closest to the pin on the 13th, and a straightest drive on the 2nd. Winners were awarded in both gross and net tallies.

The LGAFB is open to all female golfers eligible for membership at Fort Belvoir Golf Club, and interested players can join any time during the season.

Weekly play (shotgun start format) is every Tuesday morning, beginning in April and running through October. Annual dues are $65. Tournament play continues into November.

The LGAFB, formed in 1957, provides female golfers the chance to share their enthusiasm for the sport in a socially competitive environment, according to a LGAFB press release. For weekly play dates, groups are comprised of players from various flights, based on handicap, and recognition is given to winners based on their individual flights.

The LGAFB also hosts several special tournaments at the Golf Club each year, including the Rally

for the Cure tournament, which recognizes and contributes to Breast Cancer awareness, and the Member-Guest tournament, which gives members a chance to meet and interact with guests invited from various golf clubs in the area. Other major events include the Member-Member tournament that allows competitors to share camaraderie with other LGAFB golfers, the Memorial tournament which recognizes those who have belonged to the organization in the past, and the Spring Match and Fall Championship that recognizes the most accomplished golfers in the league.

LGAFB members can also meet, socialize and compete with their counterparts in local and regional events. The Virginia State Golf Association sponsors events throughout the state, and Fort Belvoir Golf Club’s membership in the Arlington-Fairfax County Golf League, comprised of 15 golf clubs throughout Northern Virginia, gives LGAFB members a chance to represent Fort Belvoir in team matches in April and May and play in individual monthly tournaments, June through September. Locations are rotated among all member clubs.

The LGAFB welcomes all interested female golfers to join the installation’s ladies’ group to play, compete, socialize and have fun each Thursday throughout the golf season.

In Progress Walking Across the USA Walking Across the USA is a 12week program in which participants record their miles each day after using the treadmill, elliptical, bike, track or outdoor trail. Army makes announcement about Army Cyber Command

By Army Public Affairs The Department of the Army announces the designation of U.S. Army Cyber Command, ARCYBER, as an Army Service Component Command, or ASCC. On July 11, the Secretary of the Army signed Department of the Army General Order, DA GO 2016-11, designating ARCYBER as an ASCC. Designating ARCYBER as an ASCC brings its roles and authorities in line with other ASCCs (for example, U.S. Army Europe and U.S. Army Special Operations Command) and is a major step forward in providing unity of command for cyberspace operations in support of, and fully integrated with, U.S. Cyber Command.

“A dedicated Army Service Component Command for the cyber domain is an important step to

strengthen the Army’s ability to deliver important cyber capabilities and synchronize operations for the Army and joint force,” said Lt. Gen. Edward Cardon, commander of U.S. Army Cyber Command and Second Army.

As the Army service component command for cyberspace, ARCYBER will direct and conduct cyberspace operations to ensure freedom of action in the cyberspace and information environment, and to deny access to our adversaries.

The commander, ARCYBER, now has the authority to gather resources to organize, develop, and employ cyber capabilities in support of the Joint Force.
