By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The annual Christmas tree lighting, Friday at Belvoir Chapel, marked the start of the winter holiday season.

Fort Belvoir families came out to see Santa Claus and the tree.

“Christmas is a time of year that we associate with joy,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander. “Of course, nobody looks forward more to this time of the year than our children.

That is one of the reasons why today is an important one at Belvoir. The lighting of the tree captures for our children the magic that is Christmas.”

Christmas is about coming together as a community, he said.

“It is a time for reaching out to our families and neighbors during this season of generosity and re-

newal,” Tomlinson said.

While the crowd waited for Santa’s arrival, the Catholic Children’s Choir sang holiday music to entertain the group.

Joanna Wade, a military spouse, brought her children to the treelighting and to see Santa Claus.

“Every year, we watch the utility trucks decorate the tree with ornaments and lights,” Wade said, adding the family lives close and could see the ongoing preparation that goes into the lighting ceremony.

“It’s a magical time of year and the kids get so excited about the lights and celebrations,” she said.

Wade said she loves to hear the music.

“I think (Fort Belvoir’s celebration) is special and unique, and it’s a great time for families and people of all ages to have a good time,” Wade said.

Art contest winners ride to school in style

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Two Fort Belvoir students received rides to school on a fire truck, after winning the annual Fort Belvoir Fire Safety Art Contest.

Jaelin rode in a fire truck Friday, on her way to Fort Belvoir Elementary School. She said she was happy her artwork was selected, but said she felt shy about the attention she received by coming to school in the truck. Her artwork depicted a fire with a prohibition sign over it, warning about the dangers of fire.

enables her to show others how to be safe,” said Summer’s mother, Sandra.

Learning about fire safety is important because families need to know what to do in case of an emergency, Sandra said.

Summer’s artwork showed a house with two escape routes to teach people how to get out of a house safely. Not everyone recognizes the importance of being prepared in case of a fire emergency and many people aren’t, Summer said.

She wanted to raise awareness with her artwork so others know what to do if there’s a fire.

Summer’s ride in the fire truck was a great experience, she said.

“It’s not a change you get every day – it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Summer said.

“It’s a great opportunity for her,” Jessica said, adding that learning about fire safety gives kids more awareness to make sure the family has a plan in case of a fire.

“They are very active in schools and in the community and she sees that,” she said talking about Belvoir’s Fire and Emergency Services.

Menorah lighting Tuesday

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer In honor of Hanukkah, Belvoir’s Jewish Congregation hosts a Menorah lighting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Belvoir Chapel, 5950 12th St. Participants are encouraged to bring their own menorah, as well.

The event will also have songs and refreshments to start the Jewish holiday season.

“As a community, we want to commemorate our history and our tradition. Having a menorah on a military base where, a couple of feet away, you have the manger scene, is important,” said Sara Astrow, Belvoir’s Jewish coordinator. She added that everyone can celebrate their own holidays in addition to celebrating as a larger community.

She said the Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation is the oldest and largest in the country. Everyone is welcome to attend the menorah lighting Tuesday.

Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday that celebrates the Jewish people’s struggle against the

Greeks in the Maccabean War in the second century. The Jewish people won their freedom from the Greeks and re-dedicated the Holy Temple.

They found oil within the temple that should have lasted only one day, but instead, lasted for eight, she said.

Chaplain and Rabbi, Capt.

Heather Borshof, will lead the ceremony.

“It’s kind of heart-warming to know that all over the country and the world …. everyone is lighting the Menorah at the same time,” Astrow said.

Unlike some holidays, like Christamas, Hanukkah is based on the lunar calendar, so the festival’s start-date varies each year, she said.

The congregation will also have a Hanukkah dinner at 5:30 p.m., Dec. 15 with services starting at 7 p.m. The suggested donation to participate is $15 per person.

Army Museum looking for Army Brat stories From National Museum of the U.S. Army Campaign

Calling Army Brats of every generation. The National Museum of the U.S. Army is collecting photos and stories for the museum’s “Growing Up Army” exhibit. The exhibit will be a unique place that will recognize and honor Army families through personal stories, photos, videos and an interactive game.

“Families are an important part of a Soldier’s life and an essential morale builder,” said Dr. Patrick Jennings, chief of programs and education for the National Army Museum. “They are who we fight for. The National Army Museum will tell the Army’s story through the eyes of Soldiers,” Jennings added, “and the ‘Growing Up Army’ exhibit gives voice to the story of the Army family.”

The Museum is looking for submissions from all ages and eras

to illustrate what life is (and was) like as an Army Brat. More contributions make a better exhibit, so help spread the word to Army Brats you know for their chance to be included in the future home of Army history.

Vet Clinic im Soldiers’

Karen Welling brought her dachshund Bobby to the Veterinary Center for an eye problem at Tuesday.

Tucked away on Theote Road is the Fort Belvoir Veterinary Clinic named afte Brig. Gen. Russell McNellis, who served a the chief of Army Veterinary Corps from 1959 to 1965.

The clinic oversees the care of, not only the Fort Belvoir community’s beloved pets but those working animals from a variety of federal agencies within the National Capital Region. While the clinic is just like any other veterinary clinic, except with Soldiers as employees, staff there also juggle other responsibilities.

The clinic provides services, including vaccinations; minor sick-call appointments; preventative medicine; rehabilitation; and outpatient anesthetic and surgical procedures.

The clinic recently hired seven additional staff members to increase access to care for the community, said Capt. Allen Messenger, branch chief for the Fort Belvoir-Quantico Branch, Public Health Activity.

Timeout Year in photos

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Right around the first of December, I always find myself looking back over yet another year’s worth of dynamic and entertaining sports action, from the impressive displays of developing skills among the youngest athletes in the CYS leagues to the always intense matchups in the Commander’s Cup series and the WAMAC. If you add in all the major golf tournaments; the Bulldogs and Barracudas county-level football and basketball seasons; the Sonic Boom track meets and all the youth fitness competitions, it’s easy to see how a single year can get pretty full for me.

The fact that I thoroughly enjoy every minute of it is just an added bonus you really can’t put a price tag on.

Of course, a longtime (albeit, minor) frustration I’ve always had is not being able to run all the photos I take at each event I cover, simply because there’s limited space in any printed publication. Plus I tend to take too many pictures—enough, in fact, to probably be able to fill 10 newspapers for any given week.

A few times, I’ve thought about setting up a Facebook or Flickr page dedicated solely to all the photos I take during the year. But, as a parent myself, I’d never be comfortable posting photos of children on the Internet, and with a few of the units I cover here, mission security is sometimes an issue as well.

As such, I decided to go back through all the 2017 issues of the Belvoir Eagle and put together a little collection of photos that didn’t make the final cut when those papers originally came out, and run them in an issue or two to round things out. If anything, it’ll get a few more athletes recognized and it certainly gave me a pleasing opportunity to revisit some fantastic athletic contests.

So, in these pages this week (and maybe next week, too) you’ll find some never before seen photos that I hope will keep all of our great athletes in the spotlight where they certainly belong. I’ve said it before, but if the sports programs here are any indication of integrity and commitment, Belvoir remains the best installation in the Army.

Pacific Regional Trials: Closing ceremonies and what the games are all about

The 2017 Pacific Regional Trials concluded with a ceremony, Nov. 10 at Ford Island, Hawaii, overlooking the USS Arizona memorial.

During the week-long competition, about 80 wounded, ill or injured Soldiers and veterans from the Pacific region trained and competed in eight adaptive sporting events at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii: swimming; track; field; shooting; archery; cycling; sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

Top competitors from the regional events are invited to participate in the Army Trials 2018, and from there, can compete and progress to the Defense Department Warrior Games.

“It seems very fitting that we hold the closing ceremony right here at this location, this very historic site,” said Hill.

“Today, we benefit from the progress of our predecessors,” Hill said. “Our generation of Service members has access to world-class programs and services that those before us did not. The (Army) War-

rior Care and Transition program is one such example.”

One of 14 warrior transition units across the country, WTBHawaii plays an essential role in supporting wounded, ill and injured Soldiers in the Pacific region by providing mission command and personalized support through a triad of care.

“The Warrior Games serve as a critical component of that mission,” added Hill. “They allow our

wounded and injured Soldiers to demonstrate not just through their physical prowess regained through their hard work and determination, but also their mental and spiritual toughness required to overcome some of the challenges they endure daily.”

After becoming wounded, ill or injured, Service members often experience many challenges during recovery and transition, including at least six months of complex medical care.

The Warrior Games and the other adaptive sports competitions, such as Pacific Regional Trials, emphasize the importance of adaptive reconditioning activities to daily recovery.

Service members and veterans who use adaptive sports as part of their rehabilitation process benefit from maintaining active and healthy lifestyles and developing leadership and camaraderie; and recognize that recovery is achievable by focusing on ability rather than inability.

During the ceremony, Col. Andrew M. Barr, Tripler Army Medical Center commander, also provided remarks.

“From the stories that we heard this week, what you end up getting is a sense of accomplishment and a sense of resiliency.”

“If you have healthy puppies and healthy kitties, then you have healthy Soldiers and their families,” he said, adding that caring for pets of military families is vital to the Service members’ spiritual and mental health. It’s also important to the concept of One Health, an initiative focusing on joining those who work with the care of people, animals and the environment.

The clinic also provides a training program location for Army veterinarians.

The clinic currently has six veterinarians in rotation.

Overall, Messenger said with a staff ready and willing to meet the needs of its customers, he is very pleased with how hard they work, especially in such a highstakes field.

Navy bells, Army colors mark NCR change of leadership

By Military Health System Communications Office In a ceremony combining timehonored traditions from the Army and the Navy, Navy Rear Adm. David Lane relinquished his position as director of the National Capital Region Medical Directorate, NCRMD, to Maj. Gen. Ronald Place.

The ceremony was Nov. 29 in Maryland, during the 126th annual meeting of AMSUS, the Society of Federal Health Professionals.

“Bringing together two different traditions pays greater homage and respect to each,” said Navy Vice Adm. Raquel Bono, Defense Health Agency director. She officiated

the change of authority ceremony, which also included elements from the Air Force, Marine Corps, and Public Health Service.

The ceremony combined the sea service’s tradition of bells to mark arrivals – six for Lane and Place; and eight for Bono, corresponding to their ranks, and the land force’s tradition of “passing colors,” to ensure the continuation of leadership. Bono said the melding was particularly appropriate, given the joint nature of NCR-MD. The directorate was established in October 2013 to exercise authority, direction and control over Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Walter Reed National Military Medical

“We serve the largest concentration of DoD beneficiaries in the world,” said Lane, the outgoing director. Earlier, he noted the directorate extends as far east as Annapolis, as far north as Fort Meade, Md.; and as far south as Quantico, “with patients who live far beyond those named places.”

During the ceremony, Bono thanked Lane for his superb leadership. “We all need to recognize the potential of what we can do collectively,” Bono said. “Dedication, focus, and innovation have allowed NCR-MD to thrive.”

To continue the success, Bono said, “You need to have the right kind of leader.” That leader, she said, is Place. He began his career as a staff general surgeon at Martin Army Community Hospital at

Fort Benning, Ga. Board-certified in general and colorectal surgery, Place deployed to Afghanistan with the 250th Forward Surgical Team (Airborne) in October 2001. For most of last year, Place was a focal point in managing and coordinating the historic MHS reforms, included in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. In his remarks, Place said change is never easy and that Lane is “a tough act to follow.”

“But, readiness is our central mission, and that’s not going to change,” Place said. “We need to continue focusing on the health readiness of the force – fit to fight, ready to win – and a ready medical force that can perform the mission anytime, anywhere, at a moment’s notice.”

Salute to Soldiers The Fairfax-Lee Chapter of The Association of the U.S. Army, AUSA, hosts its 10th annual Salute to Soldiers Holiday Celebration, Dec. 14 at the Belvoir Officers’ Club. The event, from 5-9 p.m., is open to all military personnel, government civilians, industry partners and their families.

The Fort Belvoir Christmas Bird Count, CBC, is Dec. 31 this year. This annual count, one of the oldest in the area, dates back to 1911. Sponsored by the National Audubon Society, the counts help researchers better understand wintering bird populations.

Novice birders and experts are asked to volunteer at either 5 or 7 a.m.; or 1 p.m. Novices will be teamed up with seasoned birders, to learn.
