Local chamber of commerce recognizes Fort Belvoir Police, Fire departments By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir police and fire personnel were honored at Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce’s 10th annual Police and Firefighter Tribute, Friday at the Hilton Springfield. The event honors fire and police departments from the area and recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to their department and community. Scott Stroh, president of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and executive director at Gunston Hall, said it was an honor to recognize those who exhibit dedication, valor and service. Sgt. Alicia Handy, an active-duty Soldier, was named Fort Belvoir Detective of the Year. “I’m excited, happy and glad to know that my work has not gone unnoticed,” she said about receiving the award. A military police officer, she said when she recently arrived at Fort Belvoir, there was a position open within the department, but that it was really hard to get. However, after being hand-selected she was excited, but nervous, as it was new for her. “The training they gave me and the confidence they had in me, I instilled it in myself, and I took it and ran with it,” she said. Handy was one of nine people from Belvoir to be recognized.
