Garrison commander details his priorities Greenberg took command in August Garrison Public Affairs A few months into his time here as Garrison commander, Col. Michael Greenberg met recently with Belvoir Eagle staff, to discuss his vision for Fort Belvoir and his priorities, looking to the future.

“I was humbled and very excited with the opportunity to command the garrison at Fort Belvoir,” Greenberg said, adding it was his top choice of commands. “We’re unique, in that we serve more than 140,000 people and 150 units and mission partners on post.

“Collaboration and listening are so important. You never know where a good idea will come from and how many long-term benefits it will have, so, we like to invite everyone to the table,” he said.

He added he solicits lots of opinions before making decisions or changes.

“They’re all brilliant in their jobs.

I listen to their advice before we make an informed decision for the way forward,” Greenberg said.

He said one of his priorities is to ensure Fort Belvoir is safe and secure for people to work and live. And, because of that, he and his team made changes to Belvoir’s access control points, adding serpentine patterns and lowering speed limits.

“We’d like everyone to have an understanding in today’s post-9/11 environment, it’s better to wait and have patience, than have a significant incident on post that harms our workforce and families,” he said.

“Many methods that some may see as inconveniences are part of our culture after 9/11.”

Looking to the future, he said he expects Belvoir to permanently house a dedicated, state veterans’ office, in a building near the bowling center. “This makes so much sense,

In addition to veterans and retirees, Greenberg said he and his team are constantly improving relationships with state and local community leaders.

As Fort Belvoir progresses and grows, Greenberg said he is looking incredibly forward to the completion and opening of the National Museum of the U.S. Army on Belvoir, expected in summer 2020.

Another of the colonel’s focuses is recognition, and he hosts and attends several employee recognition events from garrison directorates each month.

“I enjoy them, because the recognitions are all about people,” he said.

“Everyone who works for garrison, or on post, and family members … all have very important roles in the puzzle.”

“Community-wide events, like last week’s tree-lighting and Santa’s workshop, are where we shine,” Greenberg said. “They prove we can have fun, interesting, familyfriendly events that improve every year, because of the ongoing and constant relationships that we have with our community, our partners and our installation.”

Col. James “Rich” Miller commanded the U.S. Army Nuclear Power Program when a vessel and crew under his authority were nearly lost at sea, near Cape Hatteras, while being towed from Panama to Fort Belvoir in January 1977. After retiring from the Army, Miller was inspired by the Coast Guard’s rescue of all 17 crewmembers, to volunteer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 17 years … one for each crewman saved. He fulfilled his vow this year and retired as a leader and mentor of Auxiliary Flotilla 25-08.

Need gift ideas? New bicycle shop open on 12th Street

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Rats Cycles founder and owner, Matthew Rupert, emphasizes that his bike shop is all about the customer. The shop, on Belvoir’s 12th Street, offers a wide variety of services for cyclists, without the need to go off post.

Rats Cycles not only services bicycles with tune-ups and fixing flats, but for $99, the shop also professionally packs bicycles within a day, for those who are moving or taking a vacation.

Rupert and co-owner Christian Mostert, opened their Belvoir location Nov. 1, with the first location in Springfield. They decided to bring their second location to Belvoir after realizing there was a need within the military community, Rupert said.

“It seems like a hassle to get to a bike shop, so we thought this was the perfect combination of helping them, so they don’t have to leave post,” he said, adding it was also an opportunity to help families in the area.

The shop services adult and children’s bicycles, but also items such as jogging strollers and scooters.

They sell mostly new bikes and some

pre-owned ones. Prices for bicycles start at $100. They will fix any bike, regardless of where it was bought or how old it is. And, if they don’t have what you need, they will get it for you. Rupert also emphasized customization and those who are unsure about their needs can come in to talk.

Rats Cycles gives customers a customized experience, but also doubles as a social spot while you’re on your lunch break, he said. They pride themselves on being honest and friendly.

“Our whole goal is to educate people and give them a fair price,” Rupert said. “We love to have people come in and have discussions about bicycling.”

Bicycling has many advantages, like offering those with knee problems a low impact way to exercise, but it’s also fun, Rupert said.

“I think a lot of people are drawn to the active side to it, but it’s also one of those things where, no matter how much money you have, almost everyone has had a bicycle at some point,” he said. Seeing bicycles “takes them down memory lane to remem-

Intramural basketball season gets underway

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir’s basketball teams kicked off the FY19 Commander’s Cup intramural hoops season with a series of defense-heavy, low-score matchups across the lineup, Dec. 4 at Wells Field House.

In the 6:15 time slot, perennial contender, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and Office of the Chief Army Reserve treated the packed stands to an intense showdown that went down to the final buzzer. Matching a fluid passing game with a no-prisoners approach to man-to-man defense, DTRA emerged on top 41-37.

Intramural basketball games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays through Feb. 20, with the season ending in a single-elimination championship tournament between the 10 top-seeded teams.

Max Mileage Cardio Program Sports and Fitness is offering a free 12-week cardio program where participants record their miles each day. Participants who achieve 250 miles or more at the end of the 12week program will get a T-shirt.

The program runs Jan. 7-March.

Each participant will be given log-in sheets to track their progress.

Participants track their daily steps/ miles while walking, biking, rowing, using an elliptical and/or climbing on a stepper. At the end of each week, participants will add their weekly totals.

The Max Mileage Cardio Program manager will collect the log sheets every Friday and post the results on the following Monday. County hoops action intensifies

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor With weeks of intense practices and the season openers in the books, Belvoirâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Barracudas teams are giving spectators increasingly dynamic exhibitions of teamwork, determination and precision, as the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League entered its second week of regulation play, Saturday at Specker Field House.

The Barracudas are members of the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League, a metro-area athletic program for boys and girls, grades five through eight, who compete each year against some 25 local youth clubs.

The Belvoir Barracudas regular basketball season runs through March and ends with a championship tournament.

In Memoriam Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Lorene Ann “Lori” Wright passed away Dec. 2. She was a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion (Tactical Exploitation) and was awarded the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal.

Wright was born in Washington State, joined the Army as an intelligence analyst and served in Korea. She later served as a senior drill sergeant at Fort Bragg, N.C. She retired from the Army in 2006 after more than 24 years of honorable service and worked as a counterintelligence analyst at OPM until her full retirement in 2017.

She is survived by her husband, Master Sgt. Alex Wright of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter; her parents and siblings.

A funeral service will take place at Belvoir’s Fairfax Chapel, 11 a.m., Saturday, with interment at Arlington National Cemetery, next year. Donations in Lori’s memory may be sent to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and the Lead The Way Fund.
