Fort Belvoir addresses concerns at resident town hall Wednesday Fort Belvoir Garrison, with a panel of experts, hosted a resident town hall last week, to address their concerns about lead-based paint in older, historic homes on Belvoir. The town hall was a result of a recent news report of lead paint in some Army housing, worldwide. The panel, from Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, the Villages at Belvoir and Garrison’s Directorate of Public Works, updated residents about the installation’s ongoing and established procedures that help safeguard families, through an Army-approved maintenance program of renovation, remediation and mitigation and repair activities. Homes built before 1978 may have traces of lead in the paint. Twentyfour million homes in the U.S. were built before then and the Army has more than 36,300, pre-1978 homes. Belvoir has 624 homes built before1978 that are in use. A third of them house children younger than 7, the ones most susceptible to the effects from lead-based paint exposure.

is the community director with the Villages at Belvoir. Additionally, she said vacated homes are prepared for new residents through a process of inspections, repairing any chipping or peeling lead-based paint; and cleaning the home to remove paint chips or dust. She added that work order requests from residents about damaged or deteriorating paint are considered emergency requests for inspection. Repairs are then completed by a technician or a certified contractor, depending on inspection results. Evans said if parents of young children have health concerns, they can, without an appointment, request testing of their children at Belvoir Hospital’s Pediatric Clinic or Family Medicine. Information about the hazards of lead and how to protect you or your family is available online from the Army Medical Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cdc.gov.
