We wanted to share with you our team is also actively monitoring the pandemic and adjusting our operations and services to ensure they are consistent with the recommendations of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration and Fort Belvoir Garrison. We are committed to implementing procedures targeted at preventing the possible spread of this illness in the Belvoir community and to, most importantly, protect you.

In consideration of the above, we want to inform you of some community changes that are intended to support the health and welfare of our residents and team members. Effective now and until further notice, we are: • Adjusting operations at community management offices and Family Housing Welcome Center in support of the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing.

Instead of visiting an office in person, we request residents call and use the online ActiveBuilding resident portal to connect

• Requesting residents notify a member of the community management team if anyone in your residence may have been exposed to COVID-19, has recently traveled from an affected area; may have flu-like symptoms; is under self-quarantine or has tested positive for COVID-19;, so we may take the proper precautions. Refer to the Travel section of the CDC’s website, cdc.gov, for a list of high-risk countries.

• Closing the Self Help Center to walk-ins.

By Paul Lara Belvoir Eagle rmy Emergency Relief needs your help. AER is a non-profit, financial assistance organization that provides zero-interest loans and grants to Soldiers and families in need.

The AER Campaign, through May 15, is seeking donations to help Soldiers, retirees and their families get through short-term financial emergencies, including living expenses, utilities, vehicle repairs, medical expenses, emergency travel and more, according to the campaign supervisor, Andrew Pike.

“We are the Army’s charity,” he said. “Go to aerhq.org, and hit the Donate button. You can donate via credit card, PayPal, or monthly allotment. Soldiers can even note their unit for tracking purposes, though all donations go into the general fund.”

AER offers a loan, a grant, or a combination of the two.

“Emergency travel is automatically a 50/50 split (half loan, half grant), and that percentage adjusts based on the financial impact to the Soldier; each case is worked against the Soldier’s budget. Some Soldiers may even receive a full grant if the need is there,” Pike said.

As Fort Belvoir does not have an AER officer, Soldiers who need help have options. They can use AER Quick Assist by speaking with their company commander or 1st Sergeant for a loan approval; direct access to AER at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, 202 Custer Road, Fort Myer, VA, or call 703-696-3510. Retirees or Soldiers with easier access to another installation can contact that service’s aid society, as Navy and Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard all have reciprocal agreements.

Soldiers can also call the Red Cross military assistance hotline, 877-272-7337, get their case approved and receive money via Western Union, giving a reach across the entire U.S. Beyond emergency relief, AER also offers scholarships for children and spouses.

Since 1942, AER has provided $2 billion to nearly 4 million Soldiers, including $1 billion since 9/11. Through zero-interest loans, grants, and educational scholarships, AER ensures no Soldier faces financial hardship on their own.

CID encourages vigilance to prevent coronavirus cyber scams

D

uring this time of heightened awareness and protection against potential health risks associated with COVID-19, there is also an increased risk in scam methods used by cybercriminals.

The Army Criminal Investigation Command warns the community that some phishing campaigns prey on would-be victims’ fear, while others capitalize on the opportunity created by hot news topics. The COVID-19 pandemic presents cybercriminals with a way to combine both into a dangerous, one-two punch.

Most recently, the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 interactive map has been hacked by cybercriminals. The hackers are selling copies of the interactive map as a malware tool used to steal passwords and user data.

A significant number of additional coronavirus-related domains have been registered. CID officials warn users to not open attachments or links in emails coming from such domains.

Below is a list of websites that have recently shown signs of malicious behavior detected by anti-virus software: coronavirusstatus.space; coronavirus-map.com; blogcoronacl.canalcero. digital; coronavirus.zone; coronavirus-realtime.

com; coronavirus.app; bgvfr.coronavirusaware. xyz.

CID special agents remind everyone to be alert and suspicious and take extra steps to verify information before agreeing to anything. Without being suspicious, you could be putting someone’s personal or financial information at risk.

According to CID officials, individuals should be suspicious of anyone who approaches or initiates contact about coronavirus; and anyone not known, or with whom conversation was not initiated, who offers advice on prevention, protection or recovery, especially if they ask for money.

Cybercriminals may use a variety of approaches, including • Someone claims to represent the health department who emails you or comes to your door and tells you of the risks of COVID-19 and offers vaccination or other testing. The health department will not do this. If this happens, call your local police department immediately.

• Someone claiming to be from your bank or an investment firm who you do not already have a relationship with, who offers investment alternatives to protect you from economic and market uncertainties.

• Someone who threatens you with repercussions, like arrest, prosecution or confinement, if you don’t pay a fee.

• Someone claiming to be from a hospital where a loved one is being treated for the virus but needs money urgently before

lifesaving treatments can be rendered.

• Someone claiming to be your friend stuck in a foreign country and can’t get home unless a “virus prevention” or other outrageous sounding fee is paid.

• Unsolicited emails offering expert advice or information, which can contain malware or links to sites with malware.

• Someone asking for any personally identifiable information, bank account or financial information, or information about family members.

• Someone claiming to be from computer support who tells you your computer is infected with coronavirus and offers to repair it. Computers cannot be infected by coronavirus.

Remain vigilant and take precautions against cyber scams. Always use trusted sources; avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails, IMs, or texts; avoid opening attachments in unsolicited emails; do not reveal personal or financial information in email, IMs, or texts; and verify a charity’s authenticity before making donations.

Reputable websites relating to the coronavirus are from the CDC; World Health Organization; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Food and Drug Administration; the government’s coronavirus website; state, county and city health departments; local hospitals; primary care physicians; clinics where you get medical services.

DoD implements child care priority policy change

By Defense.gov n June 1, the Defense Department plans to implement a policy change to current priorities for child care.

As directed by Mark Esper, defense secretary, in a memo signed Feb. 21, the department will afford priority access to military families.

Beginning June 1, military services may begin to officially notify families who face being supplanted.

Once a family is notified, they then have 45 days to find alternative care. ‘’The department’s system of child care was established to assist Service members as they face the unique challenges associated with the demands of military service,’’ said Vee Penrod, acting assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs. ‘’Over time, child care access expanded to serve the total force. But, we must not lose sight of the Service member and mission requirements. We must ensure that our military members and families have the support needed in order to be mission ready.’’

Changes to the policy include clarifying situations where military families may supplant lower priority patrons, when necessary. The child’s age and the waitlist at their respective center will determine if currently enrolled families will be impacted. These changes also clarify the definition of a working spouse; provide ample notification in cases of discontinuation of child care; and provide authority

t age 28, Stephanie Johnson, a mother of two, decided to join the U.S. Army and pursue a better life for her children. She dreamt of providing them opportunities and benefits she never experienced growing up and had no idea she would be the only enlisted female diver in the Army.

Sgt. Johnson is the lead salvage diver for the 569th Engineer Dive Detachment, 53rd Engineer Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. Johnson has always been interested in physical fitness and playing sports. Despite being fit, she found pull-ups to be challenging during Advanced Individual Training.

“I had always worked out and I never really struggled, but building the initial upper body (strength). For me, that was a huge challenge,” said Johnson. “I wasn’t prepared for the level of

physical training that dive school was going to take me to.

Sometimes, we were working out two or three times a day. I was just so tired all the time, but I adapted.”

She credits her family with giving her the motivation to continue and graduate from dive school.

“I hope I can show young girls that they are perfectly capable,” Johnson said. “You have to put your mind to it, don’t quit, try your hardest and keep a positive attitude. I hope I always demonstrate a positive attitude to my fellow Soldiers and inspire them to do the same. I really do think that can get you through any of your trials, personal or work-related; it’s all about attitude.”

When Johnson decided to join the Army, she wanted to find something she could be proud of.

“I wanted to do something that had meaning and was not only physical, but where I could go home at the end of the day and feel as if I actually did something productive that day,” Johnson said. “That I had benefitted someone.”

Thinking back to what her mother used to tell her, “This, too, shall pass,” has helped Johnson push herself through tough parts in her life, and has motivated her to keep going.

“Things may be hard at work or at home, so I try to focus on what I can do to make it better and accept that it’s not going to last forever,” Johnson said. “I just keep pushing through knowing that I’m going to be stronger on the other side. I try to think of problems as temporary obstacles. Everyone has setbacks, everybody makes bad choices, and everybody faces things that are completely out of their control, that go wrong. You just have to know that things will eventually get better; there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Army budgets target transformations

A

nyone wanting to stay abreast of the initiatives set through the Army’s budget can download a document which explains many of the Army’s soughtafter changes.

In February, the force released its Fiscal Year 2019-2021 Accomplishments and Investment Plan shortly after the Army’s FY21 budget request was announced.

The FY19-21 plan outlines how the Army is targeting its top priorities of readiness, modernization and reform, while emphasizing the significance of people, the Army’s greatest strength.

“We treat taxpayers’ dollars like we treat our ammunition. Every bullet counts and is aimed against a target,” said Ryan McCarthy, Army secretary. “The Army remains steadfast in its priorities and has aligned our investments and budget against the same. People are the foundation across all of our efforts.”

The force is in an era of “great power competition,” according to the FY19-21 plan. Near-peer competitors now possess cutting-edge technology that redefines the battlefield. Therefore, transformational change is necessary to compete and deter, or fight and win, across all domains: land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.

“Another element of competition and deterrence is having a highly lethal, combat-credible force,” McCarthy said. “This is why we established six modernization investment priorities and restructured the Army enterprise with the establishment of Army Futures Command.”

acquisition processes, by bringing its modernization enterprise and critical stakeholders together under the purview of AFC, McCarthy said.

“The complexity of the (future) battlefield ... requires that we transform our 45-yearold fleet into new equipment portfolios in our formations today, so we stay relevant, retain overmatch, and allow us to win decisively in the next war,” he said.

“Large-scale modernization takes time and patience,” McCarthy added “Prototypes that began development in FY18-19 are maturing, with the real capability landing in FY21-22.

In this fiscal year, there will be an increase in test shots, capability demonstrations and validation of prototypes.”

Along with the Army’s readiness and modernization efforts, the plan outlines a need to manage talent throughout the force.

Under the Army People Strategy, leaders aim to acquire, develop, employ, and retain a diverse Soldier and civilian workforce. The fiscal plan highlights the Army’s Talent Alignment Process, or ATAP, which incorporates improved ways to select leaders through the Battalion Commander Assessment Process, or a means to accelerate the careers of high-quality Soldiers through merit-based promotions.

Additionally, the plan underlines some of the Army’s quality-of-life improvements for FY20-21, targeting changes to housing and barracks; health care; child care; spousal employment and permanent-change-ofstation initiatives.

“People are the foundation of all of our priorities and all that we do,” McCarthy said. “The Army has, and always will be, a people organization.”

Brain Injury Awareness Month raises TBI awareness

By Military Health System raumatic brain injury remains a key health concern for the military. TBI ranges in severity from mild to penetrating. Most TBIs in the military are mild, otherwise known as concussions, and most Service members return to duty after recovering from their injuries, according to Defense Health Agency’s Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. With other elements of the Military Health System, DVBIC offers resources and tools to educate the military community about TBI during Brain Injury Awareness Month, March.

More than 400,000 Service members have been diagnosed with a first-time TBI since 2000, according to figures published by DVBIC. Service members who may have been involved in a potentially concussive event need to see a medical provider as soon as possible, since research shows getting treatment early helps maximize outcomes.

Most Service members who sustain a mild TBI return to full duty within seven to 10 days through a progressive return to activity process.

This year, DVBIC is highlighting how the military community of Service members, veterans, health care providers, researchers, educators, and families – works together to address TBI in the military with the theme, “TBI: Me, You & Us.” Service members have to be prepared to prevent a TBI while training or deployed, and need to educate themselves about symptoms, so they know when to seek care.

During March, “A Head for the Future,” an awareness initiative, features videos highlighting “TBI Champions,” which share real stories of people in the military TBI community.

DVBIC is the leading DoD authority on developing clinical recommendations, guidelines and tools for health care providers who treat Service members and veterans on the latest scientific evidence about prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic brain injuries. DVBIC also features an array of resources for caregivers who play a critical role in supporting people with TBI and recognizing the tolls so often associated with caregiving.

he Belvoir Eagles maintained a dedicated passing and shooting game, combined with an equally determined effort at the opposite end of the hardwood, through two dynamic periods to down the visiting Joint Base Andrews Falcons, 68-64 in a late-season Washington Area Military Athletic Conference men’s basketball showdown, March 6 at Wells Field House.

From the opening tip to the final buzzer, veteran Belvoir guards, Anthony Johnson and Deonte Bleach, kept momentum building with their trademark rapid-fire passing game around the perimeter, connecting with lane-charging specialist, A.J. Shelton; Brandon Ehrlich and Robert Stephens for some early buckets. Adding steam to Belvoir’s efforts, forward-center, Aaron Barfield; and shooting guards, Ahmad Williams, Jacob Culver and Ryan Stephens dialed in their accuracy from the three-point arc and hit a string of clean shots, ultimately sending the Falcons to the bench at halftime trailing 33-28.

Second-period action quickly unfolded as a back-and-forth test of wills between the two squads. Despite closing in on Belvoir’s leads on multiple occasions in the back half of the contest, the Eagles defense kept the visitors’ gains in check and ultimately stepped into the winner’s circle with a 68-64 win for the week-19 books.

The Motorcycle Training Center is Bldg. 259, behind 5915 16th St. Training is mandatory for Service members who ride. The course has free loaner bikes and helmets for students in the basic rider course.

Basic Rider Course is a two-day class that will earn a motorcycle endorsement for most states and is required before a Service member rides for the first time.

The Basic Rider Course 2, or Experienced Rider Course, is a mandatory, 1-day course for motorcycle owners (within 12 months of BRC).

Fairfax County Park Authority has closed all indoor facilities through March 29, including RECenters; nature and visitor centers; historic sites; horse facilities; golf courses and preschools. For now, parks, dog parks and trails remain open.

All events, classes, programs and permitted use of athletic fields, parks, historic sites, campgrounds, and picnic shelters during this timeframe are also canceled. Refunds or credits will be issued for all canceled rentals and activities and customers will be contacted.

The authority reiterates the need for social distancing and avoiding large gatherings or group activities.
