Garrison Commander Updates Mount Vernon Community Story by Paul Lara

C

ol. Michael Greenberg, U. S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir commander, addressed the 38th Annual Mount Vernon Town Meeting, Saturday, updating the community on a variety of areas.

“I’m eager to continue to build our relationships with the county and the community,” Greenberg said. “I truly appreciate all that you do for Fort Belvoir.”

He reminded the audience Fort Belvoir is one of the principal economic engines of Fairfax County, with an estimated $15 billion dollars pumped into the community annually.

Greenberg then updated the capacity audience on pending issues

affecting the community, including the opening of Lieber Gate on Richmond Highway this spring; the opening of the National Museum of the U.S. Army, set for 2020; and the plans to dismantle and remove the SM-1, a decommissioned nuclear power plant on Fort Belvoir, expected to begin in 2020 and last five years.

Greenberg was one of a panel of speakers at the Town Meeting. The community gathering at Mount Vernon High School is a wide-ranging discussion of community activities involving state legislators, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and local congressmen.

Save more If this is one of your goals, here is what you can do.

Make saving automatic: If you are not already contributing to your Thrift Savings plan or 401K, then now is a good time to start.

These automatic contributions are deposited into your individual account before you even see the money, making it easy to save.

You can also set up an automatic recurring transfer from your checking account to a savings account before you can spend it.

to determine how long it will take you to eliminate your debt.

You are then able to manipulate the data to determine your reduction strategy, for example, paying the smallest balance first, eliminating the debt with the highest interest rate first, or finding extra income to make a “power” payment.

To streamline our lives, many people have opted to use automatic payments for just about everything, except automatic saving. Review your bank accounts and see just what you are spending your money on and decide what’s best for you.

Often times, we have “spending leaks,” which are items we buy because they seem so inexpensive, or so we think.

For example, $4.99 on Netflix; $9.99 for Hulu; $69.99 for cable and then, when we check our calendar, we don’t have time to watch any of them. See what you could eliminate just by understanding your time commitments and eliminating

Another way to spend less is to use cash. Studies have shown people tend to spend cash a bit more carefully than when using credit or debit cards. Many people find it helpful to physically see the amount of money they have available and adjust their spending accordingly. Cash is painful when it leaves your hands. Consider using cash for small, everyday purchases like groceries, gas and quick spending items such as coffees, snacks and lunch. Using cash for these items will help manage your spending in the categories and offer the chance to pause and evaluate your needs and desires before buying.

Young Inventors Follow Einstein Story and photos by Paul Lara

A

lbert Einstein said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun."

All three attributes were evident at the Belvoir Home Educators’ STEM class at the Fairfax Village Clubhouse, Jan. 30, as students clustered into noisy huddles while they wired, glued and assembled their inventions.

At the end of their recent field trip to the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum, Belvoir Home Educators discovered the museum offered after-school curricula on inventions for all age groups. Crystal Joyce, BHE events and projects leader, saw its potential to boost creativity for the group’s students.

“I think we’re the first home school group to have this inventor’s club, and we’re the only one in over 100 miles,” Joyce said.

The younger students were grouped into three teams, and each team had the task of brainstorming and inventing a product that borrowed on concepts found in nature.

The challenges were as diverse as designing the ultimate spy gear, crafting a bug-repelling machine and inventing a device to help you swim.

The sixth through ninth-grade students had a larger scope: to invent

“This teaches soft skills in communication and teamwork, and the hard skills are focused on invention,” Riley said. “It focuses on how you get an idea, how to build a prototype, how to get supporters and funding and even how you market that product,” she added.

After the teams complete their projects, a follow-up trip to the museum will allow the students to present their inventions and ask questions about next steps, according to Joyce.

“I want them to use their creativity to build with recyclables, and I want them to have fun and use their minds, instead of playing video games,” Joyce said.

“Love on the Potomac”

or Fort Belvoir couples looking for a romantic evening of dining, dancing and entertainment on the shores of the Potomac, the Officers’ Club is offering a special Valentine’s Day dinner, Feb. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Mount Vernon Room.

“Year in and year out, this has been one of our most popular events.

A gourmet meal, dancing, and all of it shared with the one you love.

What more could you want?” Xenia Chapman, O’ Club manager, said.

“We have 150 to 200 people attend every year.”

According to Chapman, the “Love on the Potomac” festivities begin at 6 p.m., with cocktails and an open bar. The four-course gourmet dinner starts at 7 p.m.

An annual event, the Valentine’s Day dinner consistently draws large turnouts.

The cost is $100 per couple, not including the tip, and is open to all DoD ID cardholders, their guests and installation visitors.

Dancing Daddies, Daughters Have a Ball at Officers’ Club Story by Paul Lara

T

iaras and gowns were everywhere at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club, Saturday, as the Villages at Belvoir hosted their 2019 Father-Daughter Winter Ball.

Dads rose to the occasion sporting dress blues and suits, as they escorted their young ladies for photos, dinner, roses and dancing.

This is an event that many look forward to, according to Jessica Kennedy, the Villages at Belvoir marketing manager.

“It’s been a full house every year, and

our team looks forward to it. It’s one of the events we host that everyone seems to want to volunteer for,” Kennedy said.

The highlight of afternoon was hitting the dance floor with friends and fathers, as the DJ brought the crowd to high-energy laughing, jumping and spinning. Kennedy said even moms were getting to enjoy the moment.

“We post live video throughout the event, because we have a lot of moms that want to see what’s going on, and see their daughters having so much fun,” she said.

Youth League Focuses on Having Fun, Skills

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir’s House basketball season officially got underway with spirited matchups between the installation’s youngest up-andcoming athletes, Saturday at Specker Field House.

The league, coordinated each year by Child and Youth Services, is comprised of young athletes who are learning the game and perfecting the skills needed to compete on the Barracudas squads in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League, the next stage in Belvoir’s youth basketball program. Four age divisions: 5-6, 7-8, 9-11 and 12-15, are represented each year.

With weeks of skills development and practice under their feet, the players have now begun treating coaches and parents to increasingly well-polished and consistently

exciting performances on the court.

Shooting accuracy and ball-handling capability, as well as precision defensive prowess, is emerging as these athletes apply the basics they’ve learned and refine the more detailed aspects of getting the ball into scoring position and keeping opponents at bay in a team effort.

While fun remains the primary focus in Belvoir’s House league, its participants are discovering the rewards of becoming better players and forging unit pride.

House league games are played Saturdays through April at Specker Field House.

DLA overwhelms USAASA in IM hoops

Using a tried-and-true passing game for the duration of the contest, while maintaining a total lockdown of the lane at the opposite end of the hardwood, current Commander’s Cup champion DLA strolled into the winner’s circle with a 67-40 victory,

all but guaranteeing its place in the forthcoming championship tournament.

Intramural basketball games are played Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Feb. 20, with the season culminating in a single-elimination championship tournament between the 10 topseeded teams.
