Principles of our nation

MLK remembered at Belvoir event By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday and holiday, Jan. 17 at the Fort Belvoir Community Center. The guest speaker was retired Brig. Gen. Nolen V. Bivens, president of Leader Six, Inc. He said King remembered the principles that the nation was founded upon. “Dr. King celebrated a promise that the constitution of the United States gives every American. And he acted by taking on the role of a servant,” Bivens said. King was burdened only by wanting to secure Constitutional rights granted to every American, Bivens said, adding that he was an American on the front lines of a great social movement. Today people must continue to ensure that the rights granted to Americans remain, Biv-

ens said, emphasizing that he wanted those in the military to leave the event with “even greater passion to live out our oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States.” King used nonviolent methods to ensure domestic tranquility, Bivens noted, adding that King wanted people to learn together as brothers. “It is important to remember that we live in one of the most free countries in the world, in spite of the current economic climate,” he said. “That ought to propel each of us to make each day count. No day will ever be a day off,” Bivens said. Bivens also serves as chair of the National Leadership Advisory Council and the National Initiative for Arts and Health, as well as serving as a senior policy fellow, arts and military, with Americans for the Arts.

(Left to right): Fort Belvoir’s Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry, Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir commander and Col. Maria Eoff, assistant executive officer to the commanding general U.S. Army Materiel Command, meet following a Jan. 18 tour of the installation. Garrison department directors provided Eoff with updates on Fort Belvoir mission status during her visit.

Col. Maria Eoff, assistant executive officer to the commanding general U.S. Army Materiel Command, visited Fort Belvoir, Jan. 18. She attended a staff meeting with garrison directors, which she referred to as part of a “fact-finding mission,” to understand each of the garrisons she’s visited. Eoff is very passionate about getting the input and perspectives of the directors, to understand what was working and what was not working at the garrison level, she said. To better her personal

understanding of what was happening in each situation, she wanted to visit and see the situation for herself. “Sometimes you don’t understand until you are physically there,” she said. At higher headquarters, she added, they were working on improving strategy so that all involved could understand the big picture for changes that were being done in the Army. Eoff also wants to work with garrisons to get feedback and capture what she called “hot rocks” among installations to find trends to help determine future policy changes or solutions.
