Global defense chiefs meet on Belvoir

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer More than 70 international chiefs of defense met at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club, Tuesday, during the Chiefs of Defense for Counter-Violent Extremist Organizations Conference. Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, hosted the conference.

“Today was, in my opinion, a fairly historic day. We had representatives from over 75 countries and also NATO and the European Union to discuss the challenges of violent extremism,” Dunford said.

The conference at Belvoir was the second time it’s been conducted. About 40 defense chiefs met last year at Joint Base Andrews.

To deal with the transregional threat of extremist groups, Dunford said it would require collective action from many nations. Although ISIS wasn’t the defense chiefs’ only concern, they did discuss the threat ISIS poses and its spread to other countries.

“We realized the most effective action against these groups is local action,” he said. “But, that local action has to be informed by the nature of the threat, which is a transregional threat.

So, cooperation globally, is important.”

At a strategic level, they would also need to “cut the connectivity” between the groups, Dunford said.

Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, spoke about the campaign against ISIS. They managed to take 90,000 square-kilometers from ISIS, which the extremist group has not been able to regain. As a result, 6.6 million people have been liberated from ISIS, and 2.3 million Iraqis have been able to return to their homes. He noted they are seeing similar trends in Syria.

Although Iraq and Syria get a lot of attention, it’s not just about that, McGurk said, explaining that they are also tracking ISIS and other groups in other countries.

Dunford called the conference a success and said it shows the dedication of many nations committed to counter violent extremism.

Elementary school hosts STEAM Day

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir school children and their parents attended STEAM Day in support of science, technology, engineering and math, Saturday at Fort Belvoir Elementary School. The event featured numerous activities and hands-on projects to keep kids engaged in STEAM fields.

There’s a misconception that math and science are hard, said Rachael Domer, program manager of technology and engineering education for Fairfax County Public Schools. Kids believe you have to be a genius to work in those fields.

“That’s not the case at all,” she said, adding she knows how it feels because, at one point, she struggled in grade school; and math and science made her especially nervous, because she also believed she wasn’t able to do it.

It wasn’t until her father, an engineer, showed her more of the handson side of engineering that it finally clicked for her, Domer said. Math and science were no longer out of reach as Domer realized she could have fun while learning.

“That’s kind of why I wanted to go into education – especially engineering education to share that with everyone,” she said.

Domer was originally an engineering teacher at Belvoir several years ago, when she helped create STEAM Day. She enjoyed coming back to see how the educational event has grown over time, she said.

At STEAM, the students were hands-on with activities, including an egg-drop from a fire truck competition; rockets, robotics and 3D printing.

Lt. Col. Ross Lindsey and his daughter, 10-year-old Jessica, were excited to come out as both love science. When he was in school, Ross said he had a passion for science and, as prior enlisted, was even a medical lab technician, which used a lot of sciences, like hematology, urology, chemistry and biology.

Ross said he wanted STEAM Day to help broaden his daughter’s perspectives on science and technology. She’s always experimenting and the family calls her “the mad scientist.”

It also helps students improve their performance at school, Ross added about what Jessica had learned at one of the tables lined up in the gym for the students.

Jessica likes to invent her own things, including slime, which she said helps her stay focused when she plays with it. When she gets older, she said she wanted to work in the science field to help others.

“This is where the jobs are going to be,” Domer said about the effects of STEAM Day. “It’s a win-win situation because the kids really enjoy this stuff.

If you look around you can see them all smiling and jumping around and having fun. So, it’s fun for them, and it’s also where careers are in the future. We just need to make them more aware of everything that’s out there.”

Services deploy with field kitchen for Hurricane Maria recovery

By Staff Sgt. Joshua Horton 123rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the Kentucky Air Guard’s 123rd Services Flight arrived in Puerto Rico to help with hurricane relief efforts by cooking meals for Puerto Rico National Guard Soldiers.

The Kentucky Air Guardsmen, joined

by Airmen from the Tennessee Air Guard’s 134th Refueling Wing, deployed with a Disaster Relief Mobile Kitchen Trailer, which gives them the ability to serve up to 4,000 hot meals per day, said Master Sgt. Aaron Foote, base services specialist and unit deployment manager for the 123rd Force Support Squadron.

“There are 17 of those trailers across the country, and we have one of them,” Foote said. “We also took two pallets of additional accessories. These guys are doing something really phenomenal down there.”

The Airmen will serve Unitized Group Rations, a meal designed to maximize the use of commercial items and simplify the process of providing high-quality food service in a field environment. The UGR includes all components for a complete 50-person meal.

According to Lt. Col. Kevin Krauss, 123rd Force Support Squadron commander, the deployment marks the first mass deployment of the DRMKT as a proof-of-concept for the National Guard Bureau.

“The mobilization went extremely smoothly,” Krauss said. “Everybody jumped in to help. They came in on weekends and holidays to get it done.

Krauss noted the Airmen face some challenges in Puerto Rico, which is struggling to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, but their performance has been exceptional.

“They’re down there without power, not exactly certain where they’re going to sleep,” Krauss said. “But, they’ve been very professional, which is not a surprise. It’s been awesome to watch.”

NORTHCOM continues Puerto Rican relief efforts U.S. Northern Command Public Affairs U.S. Northern Command continues to focus its relief efforts in support of FEMA and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in four primary areas: increasing medical capabilities; distributing commodities; clearing roads and debris; and establishing forward sustainment capabilities to support FEMA distribution points.

More than 7,800 active-duty Service members and 60 helicopters operate in and around Puerto Rico.

Each day, the Defense Department provides 10-20 airlift missions to Puerto Rico to continue patient transfers; deliver food, water and medical supplies; and sustain brigade elements.

Road-clearing operations continue to help get commodities and response teams into isolated areas in Puerto Rico. Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit handed over to the 24th MEU, which took over responsibility for ongoing missions. The missions include search and rescue; medical evacuations; commodity distribution; route assessment and clearance; and transport operations near Mayaguez; and continue the Villalba water project.

Marines and Navy Seabees from Amphibious Construction Battalion 2 and Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 202 are cutting fallen trees and removing debris from landslides. Engineering teams continue to remove debris, restore culverts and bridges and make primary and secondary roadways drivable.

Geospatial-Intelligence college receives Deming Award

By Johanne Davis NGA Human Development The Graduate School USA, an independent, non-profit, educational institution based in Washington, D.C., presented a W. Edwards Deming Outstanding Training Award to the National Geospatial-Intelligence College. NGC received the 2017 award in the technology category for its innovations in developing and deploying online learning tools.

In 2015, NGC rolled out a strategy to meet NGA leadership’s long-term vision. The central pillar of the plan is the concept of “Expanding Global Reach,” relying heavily on a multi-faceted initiative called OD² – On Demand, On Domain – to provide learning and professional development content across multiple IT networks.

The goal was to develop the capability to deliver quality training – as needed, outside of NGA’s own facilities – to places and to students across the U.S. and the globe.

Improving and widening NGA’s global reach includes: • Increasing availability of web-based learning with OD² • Adding more certified instructors and adjunct professors • Creating virtual classrooms • Establishing common curriculum and professional standards • Increasing learning requests and processing times Over the last two years, progress has been made in all of these areas. NGC is reaching more locales and students, with more and improved learning materials. Belvoir community supports breast cancer awareness with 5K

By Rick Musselman Sports Editor More than 1,000 runners supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by competing in Fort Belvoir Community Hospital’s annual 5K run/walk, Saturday at the hospital.

The event, which emerged from a partnership between the USO Warrior and Family Center and the hospital’s Oncology Department, aimed to increase the community’s knowledge of the disease, and remind women of the importance of regular breast health screenings and early detection, said Lt. Col. Andreas Lindenberg, a hematologist and chief oncologist at Belvoir Hospital.

Joe Castro, Kawamura Human Performance Center, hosted the race and Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir commander, was guest speaker.

“Breast cancer affects over 200,000 patients annually and is the most common cancer among women in the United States today, and, unfortunately, is the second leading cause of death,” Tomlinson said.

“But, the good news is that over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive today in this country. So, early detection is an important element of improving survival.

“The main purpose for all of us today is to raise awareness about breast cancer and emphasize that

categories, taking to the pavement in every shade of pink and uniting with fellow runners to spread the word about supporting cancer research, forging solidarity and promoting a message of hope.

I had a very special experience two weeks ago that, while it has absolutely nothing to do with sports, I thought deserved mentioning, if for no other reason, because I work for the military.

My parents decided it was time to upgrade their cellphones. I had to agree, considering my dad was still walking around with a flip phone. They’re far enough along in age now to where I thought they could use a break from driving around in the perpetual every-man-for-himself melee that is Northern Virginia travel, so I picked them up Friday morning and we drove to the nearest store for their carrier.

After all the business was done—phones activated, contacts and photos transferred and data packages selected—we were walking for the front door when a 30-something woman with her year-old daughter walked up. The mom had evidently seen my dad’s World War II Navy Veteran cap and asked her daughter to say “thank you for your service.”

The child’s delivery was expectedly rudimentary but the thought was certainly there, and I felt pretty proud that my dad had served (1943 – 1946) and had been acknowledged for it 70-plus years later.

Well, we walked out and started to step off the sidewalk when an approaching mail truck stopped and waved us across. Then he rolled down his window and said, “Sir, I’d like to thank you for your service.” Wow, I thought—twice in 10 minutes.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that my general view of my fellow man is not all that optimistic, and it’s an attitude that has emerged through direct experience. Perhaps it’s this area, perhaps I’ve read a lot of history, or perhaps I listen to too many news broadcasts. But after that, I couldn’t help but feel good that two perfect strangers had taken a sliver of time out of their days to throw a perfect stranger a little credit and respect.

Of course, I told my dad how nice I thought that was, and he said he gets that a lot, at least when he chooses to wear that cap.

And, like it’s always been, his attitude remains the same. You didn’t serve for the recognition; it’s just what you did.

The 911th Engineer Company (4-4) combined a surgical passing game with precision defensive execution on the line and in the secondary to dominate the 6-2 reigning Commander’s Cup champion, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, 266, in a week-6 intramural flag football showdown, Oct. 20 at North Post Field.

The Engineers, unquestionably one of the most determined and well-prepared squads in the intramurals league this year, employed its tried-and-true MO of bursting out of the starting gate with the passing game. Quarterback, Joey Girolamo, spearheaded the onslaught, connecting with tight ends, David Phillips and Nikolas Pollard, over the middle for big gains on the opening possession. Wide receiver, Chris Shepard; and running back, Michael Belcher; ran masterful routes deep in the FBCH secondary, bringing down a series of receptions that kept momentum steadily building.

By the midgame break, Belcher and Phillips had charged over the goal line for touchdowns and Shepard had snagged a short pass at the back of the end zone for a 2-point conversion to put the Engineers in the driver’s seat with a 14-0 advantage.

The FBCH offense, led by quarterback, Corey Miller; wide receiver, Scott Davis; and tight end, Zach Melville, focused all efforts on the pass. But, the Engineers had brought a brand of man defense to the field that summarily thwarted their opponents’ efforts to gain some much needed yardage and first downs. Engineer linebacker, Chris Gruendner, became a particular obstacle to FBCH’s fortunes in the secondary, disrupting a string of passes over the middle and making a

pair of above-and-beyond flag grabs.

About three minutes into the second half, Miller sent Davis and wide receiver, Amir Roundtree, on deep routes down the sidelines. Rolling out of the pocket, Miller fired and hit Roundtree at the goal line for 6 to narrow the gap on the scoreboard.

But, the Engineer defense shifted into high gear in response and denied FBCH another score for the balance of the contest.

On offense, Girolamo and company continued to trundle down the field. On first and 10 at the FBCH 40, Girolamo scrambled out of the pocket and fired deep to Pollard amid a swarm of defenders. The agile receiver took to the air, made the grab and sprinted into the end zone for another 6 to pad his team’s lead, 20-6.

After stymieing FBCH once again on its next possession, the Engineers went back to work. After a series of receptions over the middle by Phillips and Shepard, the 911th found itself poised to strike again from the Belvoir Hospital 20. Girolamo found a vacancy in the FBCH front line and sprinted through, weaving his way through the secondary and breaking the plane untouched for another TD with three minutes remaining.

The Engineer defense, once again, rose to the occasion and prevented FBCH from gaining any comeback momentum and the clock ran out, granting the 911th Engineer Company a 26-6 victory and a step up in the FY18 rankings.

Upcoming Turkey Shoot at the Golf Club The Fort Belvoir Golf Club is hosting a Turkey Shoot, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. The tournament will be played by two-person teams. The Pro Shop will make every effort to pair singles into two-person teams. There will be a shotgun start on the Woodlawn Course. The tournament will consist of a two-person team scramble, and all teams play in both the Net Division and the Gross Division. Team Handicaps will be calculated using the USGA-recommended method.

The Tournament fees are $40 for active-duty and Golf Club members, and $85 for non-members. Tournament fees include continental breakfast, carts, range balls, and a turkey dinner complete with all the traditional fare. Gift cards and turkeys will be awarded as prizes. Turkey Trot 5K/10K The Turkey Trot 5K/10K is Fort Belvoir’s premier race of the year and will be run Nov. 18. Veterans History Project celebrating Veterans Day Submitted by the Library of Congress The Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, VHP, celebrates Veterans Day, Nov. 7-11, with live book talks and a variety of performances, guided tours, workshops and other activities. The series of events is titled “Coming Home: Veterans Day at the Library of Congress.”

Activity planners intend to honor and recognize veterans and their families and explore the ways military men and women have connected to home and family during and after service.

Scheduled events are: Talks/lectures Nov. 7, 10:30 a.m., Author Jeanne Walker Harvey Presents “Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines” in the Young Readers Center, ground floor, Thomas Jefferson Building.

A discussion of an inspirational story about the woman who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. This two-hour workshop and professional-development opportunity trains attendees in oral history methods through hands-on exercises, contextual examples and best practices accordant with Library of Congress standards. The session is led by staff of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.

Military history club The Saint Martin Military History Club begins it’s monthly dinner/lecture series at the Belvoir Officers’ Club Tuesday. The club meets the second Tuesday of each month, beginning with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a military history presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Some lectures scheduled this year include: WWII on the Homefront; The Battle of Verdun; The 100 Years War; WACs in WWII, a Middle East update and others.
