The Secretary of Army, Mark Esper, visited Fort Belvoir Tuesday, to meet post senior leaders on the state of readiness and how they can plan for any upcoming changes to the military. “We need to improve our deployability numbers, first of all,” he said about what he thinks the Army needs to do to continue to modernize. “Next, we need to build the next generation of combat fighting vehicles, of aircrafts, of weapons systems.” Building systems that are unmanned, minimally manned or autonomously manned is important, Esper said. Other things the military can continue to do is improve on processes and procedures to make the military more

Esper also visited Davison Army Airfield. efficient and effective. “We need to bring into full force our modern warfighting doctrine,” he said referring to the multidomain battle, adding it should be taught throughout the entire force. Since his confirmation by the
senate in November, he said he’s enjoyed visiting Soldiers all over the world. “The highlight has been traveling the Army everywhere across the U.S., from Fort Bragg to Fort Irwin, and abroad from Korea to
Europe to Afghanistan, just to see our Soldiers,” he said. “Just to see what a great job they are doing — all components — active, Guard and Reserve, working together in defense of our nation. It’s been such a great thing to see and to get a good feel for what the Army is doing these days.” Esper has a master’s degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a doctorate in public policy from George Washington University. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1986 and retired from the Army Reserve in 2007. He thanked Service members for their dedication to the military. “There are a lot of opportunities for men and women out there and for them to serve their country, to sacrifice and do what they do — thank you very much,” Esper said.
