“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light.
I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.”
This tragic story was shared with us by Dan S., an Ashburn resident, who has peripheral neuropathy. Big Mac or BBQ? Easy choice.
Visit any town in America and you’re likely to find a McDonald’s, a Starbucks (probably more than one!) and a Wal-mart. But what makes communities unique are the local businesses and franchises that are owned and operated by your friends and your neighbors – not by faceless executives to whom Ashburn is just a bunch of demographics and a pin on a map.
Those local businesses and local owners are who we are delighted again this year to celebrate in our seventh annual Best of Ashburn survey. We received nearly 80,000 votes from nearly 10,000 individual voters in the online polling conducted in February. You’ll find the winners listed in the Best of Ashburn section that starts on Page 20.
And so after 20 years – even with new owners – Carolina Brothers has remained one of those businesses that makes Ashburn unique. You can read about the restaurant and learn about the new owners in editor Chris Wadsworth’s cover story, beginning on Page 64.

We’re especially pleased to spotlight on our cover one truly local business that has topped the “Best BBQ” category every year of the survey – Carolina Brothers Pit BBQ in “old” Ashburn. The restaurant is housed in one of Ashburn’s most historic structures – the former Partlow Bros. general store -alongside the W&OD Trail and is a longtime favorite of locals as well as cyclists and runners.
When founding owner Danny Hurdle was ready to sell, it only seemed appropriate that the buyers would be an Ashburn family – the Goreys, whose four children all worked at the restaurant. The Goreys have built on both the character and the quality of the restaurant – from the simple menu to the healthy portions to the casual atmosphere.
It all adds up to our largest issue ever of Ashburn Magazine – 100 pages – and the first issue to be “perfect-bound,” meaning the pages are bound into a cover like a book rather than stapled together. We’re proud to reach that milestone, but, most importantly, we’re thankful for all the local businesses that make it possible.

ummer is full of sunshine and fun but did you know it can be a perilous time for your jewelry? With warmer temperatures many of us are looking forward to summer travel, hitting the gym to get back in bathing-suit shape and spending some time in the pool and ocean. We want you to enjoy your sparkle and we are here to help you keep your jewels safe this summer, so we have noted a few culprits for potentially damaging your precious accessories.
Chlorine can cause chemical damage to your gold. It is found in many cleaning products, pools and even municipal water. The chemical breaks down the alloys (metals mixed into the gold for strength) leaving pockets of air and compromising the integrity of the piece. Modern designs tend to be more delicate, increasing the detriment of chemical damage.
Travel can be tough on your rings, necklaces and bracelets. Heavy luggage can bend the shank of a ring, damage prongs or even break diamonds. Necklaces and bracelets can get caught and pulled to the point of breaking. Sunscreen and saltwater make an extra slippery surface and can cause rings to slip off into the abyss of the ocean. So, go on your trip, but maybe reconsider what you wear during transit and during water activities.
The Gym is a place some of us go to look and feel our best, but jewelry should never be a part of the workout wardrobe. Rings take more abuse than other jewelry as they experience everything your hands do. As mentioned about travel, weights, metal on metal machines and rapid movements are major stressors on precious metal and should be avoided. Leaving your items in a locker can also be risky.
What we recommend:
Take it off! We want everyone to wear and enjoy their jewelry, but know that extra maintenance or premature replacement may be required if worn 24/7. A best practice is to take off your jewelry when you’re at home and put it on just before you go out (unless you are headed to the gym or the pool!). This will extend the lifespan and protect it from damage during household tasks. We also suggest having a designated place to keep your items safe when they aren’t being worn. This can be a jewelry box, ring dish, or tray(s), conveniently located throughout your home for however you plan to wear (or not wear) your jewelry.
Travel Jewelry is a game changer for looking great on vacation, while keeping the extra precious pieces safe at home. These are less expensive options that are more easily replaceable if lost or damaged. Brighton and Pandora have an excellent selection available at Ketterman ’s.
Silicone bands can prevent you from looking “too single” while at the gym and can handle the pressure of your workout. While it is best to leave your jewelry at home when working out, if you find yourself at the gym with your rings on secure them in a jewelry pouch in a deep pocket or move your rings onto a chain around your neck.

Youthful Ashburn dog to be featured in pet food promotion

An Ashburn family’s nearly 20-year-old Jack Russell terrier has caught the eye of the food brand they credit for giving him a second lease on life.
A crew from The Farmer’s Dog recently came to the home of Don and Renee Ventrice in the Broadlands to film their dog, Beemer, to use in the company’s social media campaigns –and possibly more.
Beemer joined the family as a young puppy – a gift for their son, Gino, on his 8th birthday back in 2006. Gino had hoped for a Jack Russell, and after attempts to find one via adoption fell through, his father made a covert trip to a reputable breeder two hours away.
In a room brimming with Jack Russell puppies, it didn’t take long for him to find the right one.
“All but one of these adorable puppies were hyper, climbing the fence they were in, scratching my arm to shreds as I petted them,” Don said. “And then there was that one sitting in the middle of the
pen, looking at me, calm and adorable. I called him over, he came straight to me, sat down. I petted him as he kept looking at me, and I knew from that moment that he was our new dog.”
The Ventrices attribute Beemer’s longevity to multiple factors.
“Lots of yard time when he was younger, healthy, organic food and no table food... except for food he stole when we let our guard down,” Don said.
But despite his healthy lifestyle, Beemer’s health declined last summer. He suddenly couldn’t stand or keep his food down. After consulting with

The next day, a sample of food from The Farmer’s Dog arrived. Beemer began to eat out of Renee’s hand. Within two days, he had rebounded, and she wrote a letter thanking The Farmer’s Dog for saving Beemer’s life. She also started tagging them in posts on Beemer’s Instagram page (@beemerthejackrussell). That led to the crew’s visit in mid-March.
“Beemer handled all the equipment, excitement and attention like a seasoned veteran,” Don said. “After thoroughly sniffing the crew and all of their gear, he laid in his bed at our feet while they interviewed us.”
Then it was Beemer’s time to shine. “We went out to our backyard where, much to our surprise, he decided to show off by chasing a tennis ball over and over, which at his age was heartwarming to see,” he said.
The Farmer’s Dog is expected to share the interview on its social media channels by late spring, just before Beemer turns 20 on July 1. The couple doesn’t know yet if any footage will make it into a TV commercial.
“We are really excited to see it and share it,” Don said. “I think it’s awesome, and he deserves to show off and be recognized. He is a great companion and
part of our family.” A

Inclusive indoor playground provides safe space for kids and their parents

The kids playing at We Rock the Spectrum on Ashburn’s Red Rum Drive don’t think about the indoor playground’s inclusive atmosphere. They don’t realize it has specialized sensory equipment. And they don’t know the equipment is designed particularly for children with autism, sensory processing disorders and other developmental conditions.
They’re just there to have fun.
Beatriz McNelly of Ashburn’s Ashbriar neighborhood co-owns We Rock the Spectrum Loudoun with her daughter, Eileen Markis of Leesburg. Markis previously taught and ran a summer camp at The Arc of Loudoun in Leesburg, which assists people with disabilities and their families. McNelly is treasurer of that nonprofit’s board.
The duo opened the local franchise –one of more than 200 in 34 states and eight countries – in October. Attendees range from about 6 months (able to sit up by themselves) to those in their early 20s who have the capabilities of a younger child.
The spacious facility has designated areas for toddlers and teens, an art room, a zip line, a trampoline and more.

their upper body or their lower body, to help them with hand-eye coordination –but they don’t know that,” McNelly said. “They’re just playing, right? We call it playing with a purpose.”
She added that the center welcomes everyone. “We have children that come that are not verbal, and we have children with Down syndrome. We have children that have physical issues.”
The center even welcomes siblings who don’t have special needs and children in wheelchairs.
The parents get extra support, knowing they are in a safe space whose slogan is “Finally a place where you never have to say I’m sorry.”
“When the parent-child relationship gets stressful, when the child is having a meltdown, I’ve seen [other] parents just gently come by and maybe bring a toy to
distract the child, or just pat the parent on the back,” she said. “It’s just a look like, ‘I got you. I understand.’”
McNelly said when a child gets upset in a traditional setting, most parents worry about what's going on around them. “Is he upsetting another child? Is a parent looking at you and going, ‘Ah, this person can't control their own child.’ That kind of thing never happens here.”
We Rock the Spectrum Loudoun does not have bright lights or loud noises that can upset children with autism. But if a child does get upset, they can use the Calming Room.
The facility offers one-on-one respite services, a summer camp with weeklong sessions starting July 6, birthday parties and special education class field trips. It will even offer classes such as “Mommy and Me Pilates.”
Activities that help with handeye coordination are part of the play at We Rock the Spectrum.
McNelly said she and her daughter are determined to accommodate the children in a variety of ways, such as those who come in after hours because they need the space to themselves.
“We have one child that won't leave unless he locks the door for us,” she said. “He comes at the end and we say, ‘OK, it's time to go home.’ So he comes and turns the lights off and watches us lock the door. And then he gets in his car. He’s happy.” A

Belmont Ridge Student Wins Loudoun Spelling Bee
Vikyath Tanamala, a sixth grader from Belmont Ridge Middle School, won the 44th annual Loudoun County Public Schools Regional Spelling Bee in March.
The event was held at Rock Ridge High School.
Tanamala earned the title after 16 rounds of competition, edging out Dhiya Sudhakar, a sixth grade student from Gum Spring Middle School. This is the second year in a row that Tanamala has won the regional bee.
The winning word was “peccant,” meaning “guilty of moral offense; sinning; corrupt.”
Both Tanamala and Sudhakar advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, scheduled for May 25-28 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington.
Scuba Diving Center Opens in Ashburn
Diventures, a scuba shop and dive training center, held a ribbon cutting in March for its new location in Ashburn. It can be found in the University Commerce Center off George Washington Boulevard.
The store moved to Ashburn from its previous location in Sterling.
“Our new home in Ashburn and our longstanding shop in Vienna together show how committed we are to Virginia divers,” said Dean Hollis, founder of Diventures. “We’re excited to have a space that reflects our world-class standard for safety and training as we continue building a thriving diving community here.”
The store – part of a network of 20 stores in 13 states – will provide a full suite of scuba services, including dive certification, equipment sales and service, as well as travel arrangements for group and private dive trips around the world.

GW’S ASHBURN CAMPUS
An Amazon Web Services subsidiary has bought George Washington University’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn. Amazon Data Services paid $427 million for the campus located in Loudoun County, GW
spokeswoman Julia Garbitt said, confirming details first reported by the GW Hatchet, the school’s student newspaper. Under the terms of the sale, the school can keep using the campus for up to five years.
Some of the programs housed on the Ashburn campus include nursing, engineering, physics and chemistry. There are also research labs and administrative buildings.
Northern Virginia Science Center Receives $1 Million Gift
The huge Northern Virginia Science Center under construction near Ashburn off Russell Branch Parkway received a $1 million gift from the May Family Foundation. The foundation is now the Title Partner for the museum’s Innovation center, a learning and collaboration hub inside the future science center.
The funds will support the creation of flexible learning environments designed to spark the curiosity of visitors and strengthen the STEM ecosystem in the region.
“Innovation begins with curiosity, and creating engaging STEM learning environments allows people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about, experiment and imagine what they can become,” said Elaine Attridge of the May Family Foundation. “We are proud to support a project that brings our community together to expand opportunities and inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.”
The May Innovation Center’s name will honor the Honorable Joe T. May, a Loudoun County engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, who championed technology
advancement and STEM access throughout his career.
The Northern Virginia Science Center is expected to open in mid-2027. It was featured in the July/August 2025 issue of Ashburn Magazine.

Ashburn Magazine received 12 awards, including four first-place honors, for journalistic and advertising excellence in the Virginia Press Association’s annual competition for work published in 2025.

CONTINUES TO THRIVE

The moment Frank Gorey knew he was going to buy the Carolina Brothers Pit BBQ restaurant came down to what appeared like a high stakes negotiation.
“We came up with a fair value of what we would pay. I wrote it down on a piece of paper … and slid it across the table,” Frank said.
The seller – Danny Hurdle, the founder of Carolina Brothers – picked up the paper, looked at it and had to chuckle. It was the same figure he had chosen to sell the place for.
“It was the exact same amount,” Frank recalled. “We said, ‘We have a deal. We’re going to make this work.’”
A little background may explain why it
seems fate had a hand in Gorey becoming the owner of the popular barbecue restaurant on Ashburn Road.
For decades, the building was the home of the Partlow Bros. store – a general store that was the beating heart of the tiny Ashburn community pre-boom.
In 2006, the owners of the store sold the building to Hurdle, a stonemason by trade who made killer barbecue on the side. He opened Carolina Brothers that same year – meaning this is the 20th anniversary for the restaurant.
A few years later – in April 2010 – the first Gorey came to work for the restaurant. That was Patrick. He was 15 years old at the time. Now, he’s a 31-year-old married father of two with a third child on the way.
Patrick Gorey was followed by his sister, Riley, his brother, Connor, and his brother, Ryan. All four teens grew up in Ashburn Village, graduated from Broad Run High School, and all four learned about hard work at Hurdle’s side amidst the smokers, ovens and refrigerators at Carolina Brothers.
So when the opportunity arose in 2022 to buy the restaurant lock, stock and barrel, the Gorey family were immediately the leading contenders.
Frank Gorey was retiring after 28 years working for Fairfax County in roles as diverse as a juvenile probation officer and
a zoning inspector.
But he had worked in restaurants in college. And he’d watched his kids work nights, weekends and summers at Carolina Brothers. He knew taking it over would be hard work – but it just felt right.
“I gotta be honest – I don’t think my family ever thought I’d go through with it,” Frank said. “My wife was like, ‘Yeah, sure, pursue it, honey’ while thinking I was never going to do this.”
But he did do it – and to great success. Carolina Brothers BBQ was just named Best American Cuisine and Best BBQ by readers of Ashburn Magazine in this year’s Best of Ashburn competition.
Today, Frank and his wife, Bridget, are partners in the restaurant, along with his brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Margaret Gorey, who live in North Carolina.
And more recently, eldest son Patrick – the one who started the whole thing rolling as a teenager looking for an afterschool job – bought in and became a partner, too.
“[It’s] nostalgic to be the ones who own and operate the old Partlow’s storefront,” Patrick said. “Getting to sling some BBQ there with your siblings and father right at your side is like stealing a little bit of extra time with everyone.”

the ins and outs and get the place where he wanted.
This included things like stripping the floors, putting in new light fixtures, and even – at long last– paving the crushed gravel parking lot.
“This is Ashburn,” Frank said with a laugh. “You have moms coming in $60,000 cars and $800 shoes and they just want to grab dinner. It was something that had to be done.”
Today, all the Goreys pitch in and help as their schedules permit, but third child, Connor, is the most involved – working in the restaurant full time.
He remembers being nervous when he started – there was so much to learn. For years, he stuck to front-of-house duties and prepping side dishes. But in the past few years, he’s taken on the role of head chopper – the heavy responsibility of the daily chopping of all the pork, brisket and beef.
“Over the years, I got more comfortable with doing everything,” he said. “Now, it’s kind of like the same as breathing.”
Connor arrives each morning, managing the meats, preparing sides and a dozen other jobs to get the store open and ready for the lunch rush. His proud dad knows he and Bridget can take off on a vacation as needed because Connor can run the place.
“I get to work with my dad every day, which is really nice,” Connor said. “We might be bickering all the time, but we love each other and it’s something I’m really grateful for.”
One thing that hasn’t really changed is the menu. Frank Gorey said he had (and still has) all kinds of ideas for upgrades, tweaks and new dishes. Smash burgers, kielbasa-style sausages, even vegetarian items (considering the diversity of the community) have all made the list.
But most of these ideas were quickly shot down by the kids who were loyal to how things had always been done.
While nearly everyone in the Gorey family is involved in the Carolina
restaurant in some way, it's the father and son team of Frank and Connor who are the most hands-on every day.

“I had all these ideas about expanding the menu, throwing more things in there and they were like, ‘Dad, this is what people know Carolina Brothers for. Keep it simple, stupid,’” Frank said.
So, for now Gorey does his experimenting with limited-time specials like the family’s famous hotdog chili or a New Brunswick stew that proved popular this winter.
And we can confirm he hasn’t given up on the idea of adding a sausage of some sort to the menu eventually.
But bigger changes just aren’t in the cards anytime soon. He and his wife have two grandkids so far plus No. 3 on the way and hopefully more in the future. They want to have the flexibility to spend quality time with the growing family and not have it always be over a steaming table of pulled pork.
“Our grandkids call it ‘The Pig Store’ and they’ll hopefully grow up with memories of how cool it was to have this in the family.”
A family whose history and that of Carolina Brothers Pit BBQ are forever intertwined. A
hen Ashburn’s first all-female ice hockey team, The Flying V’s, takes to the ice, prepare for the unexpected. The team’s inaugural season at Ashburn Ice House has so far included bagpipes, homemade bread and duck calls.
The team’s creator and captain, Katie Eibner, works in the construction industry and lives in
Belmont Greene with her husband and three young children. She was searching for a hobby outside the house about a year ago when she decided to attend a Learn to Play hockey clinic at the Ice House, where her husband had joined a team.
“I went to Learn to Play and was the only woman, which I’m very used to. It’s fine,” she said, referring to her experience at construction
sites. “And I just loved it. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I’m a former athlete, and this sport involves not only being good at ice skating, which is its own sport, but playing actual hockey.”
Eibner then convinced some friends to join her “and we started joking that we would start our own team of all women. And it just kept growing. I think we were at about six, and my joke started to be some-

thing that I just realized I had to do.”
Although all-women teams exist closer to Washington, only two women were playing on the otherwise all-male teams at the Ice House. And there had never been an all-women team at the facility.
“I was just of the opinion that if you want a space to exist, sometimes you have to be the one to build it,” Eibner said.

original recruits and plays defense for the Flying V’s. She works for the Department of Defense and also lives in Belmont Greene with her family. Her only prior exposure to the rink was when she brought her kids to open skate.
“Learning to play hockey is pretty intimidating,” she said. “But I eventually was like, ‘OK, I'll try it.’ I've always been an athlete, and so I was pretty sure I could figure it out.”
However, Carmack wasn’t sure that Eibner could garner enough interest to create an all-women team, no matter how great of an idea it was. Eibner spent many hours over three months joining Facebook groups and asking around to recruit enough players to fill the roster.
“I did not realize how much of an undertaking it would be, but we ended up finally getting the numbers,” Eibner said.
The team now has 16 full-time players and about six substitutes. Over half of The Flying V’s are from Ashburn, and the rest drive in from places like Fredericksburg and Maryland. They are a diverse group of women ranging from their early 20s to their early 60s. Some have been playing since the ’90s. Others are newbies. Most have worked in male-dominated

“We have former service members. We have a Marine. We have people that work for the Bureau, a former bodybuilder. We have a scientist,” Eibner said. “I joke that at some point we’ll have an astronaut. We just have some really cool people that have done all the jobs in the spaces that weren’t always the most welcoming to women.”
Eibner’s passion about The Flying V’s being a positive influence for women to pursue their interests is obvious to those around her.
Eibner said the team’s name has an “inappropriate” explanation as well as this G-rated version: “It’s a reference to the formation from ‘The Mighty Ducks’ movies that most of our team grew up watching. My kids watch them now. You
know, they get in the V formation.”
This also explains the duck calls that are sounded to celebrate every goal made by The Flying V’s.
Eibner said she plays wing “because that’s where I can do the least damage.” But although she may not yet be a star player, her out-of-the-box thinking has game.
“I like to make things weird,” she said, recalling bringing in a bagpipe player to perform during the team’s warmup the week of St. Patrick’s Day.
“Last game, I said that if anybody [on my team] scored a goal, I would bake them a loaf of bread,” Eibner said. “So I ended up having to bring six loaves of bread.”
The Flying V’s inaugural season in the Ice House’s D2 League – the lowest-level “Beer League” –kicked off in March, playing against teams made of amateur men living out their hockey dreams.

It was a bumpy start.
“Our first game was a hot mess. We played a team that is called the Night Owls, and they, within I’m going to guess 10 minutes, had five goals on us,” Eibner said. “I swear I saw my life flash before my eyes and felt awful that I had dragged women into doing this with me.”
But the Flying V’s, many of whom just met each other that night, soon found their footing and avoided a shutout. The game ended 6-1. Their second battle was against reigning league champions Thundercats, who won 3-0.
“Our third game, we were 3-3 with a team called Ice Storm until the very last few minutes,” Eibner said. “Then they got three very quick goals on us. I was thrilled to be even with them for most of the game.”
Then came their back-to-back wins: 6-0 against the Cluster Pucks and a nail-biter 5-4 against the Baconators, which is made up of military and police officers. Although the Flying V’s are there to have fun, the games are no joke. An experienced player recently suffered the team’s first injury – a broken foot from getting hit by a slapshot.
“There's technically no checking, but we're a very physical team,” Eibner said. “I have a friend on the Cluster Pucks who told us that we played them more physically than any other team they had ever played. … We’re competitive. We’re loud. We don’t

The team wasn’t sure what to expect from their male counterparts when the season began, but they had a warm welcome from the Thundercats, who left a 12-pack of beer in their locker room with a “Welcome to the D League” note.
“I think they’re happy to have us out there,” Carmack said.
Because hockey is an expensive sport, Eibner’s goal for next season is to make it more accessible. She didn’t have to go far to find The Flying V’s first sponsor, recruiter –and self-proclaimed No. 1 fan – in Sid Maharjan, owner of the Slice
Theory restaurant and bar next to the rink.
“Anytime they're playing, I’m not working,” he said. “The bar is full [and] I’m just like, ‘Guys, I’ll be right back. My team’s playing. I need to support them.’ It is so exciting to watch this women’s team.”
Maharjan said many of the league’s veteran male hockey players, along with referees, often stick around after their games to watch the Flying V’s play later in the evening.
“They are so calculated and so team spirited,” he said. “They go for it, and as long as that tenacity is there, people enjoy it. I’m a big supporter of underdogs. And I hope they get as big as they can.” A

Their goal: some patch of wilderness or another – from a marsh in the Broadlands to a meadow in Alexandria or the shoreline of the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg. Their quarry: taking photographs of birds of every shape and stripe.
“Parker loves everything there is to love about birds and honestly – her enthusiasm was infectious,” Shawn Thomas said. “This is a kid who by age 9 had memorized most of the East Coast bird field guides.”
During the week, Shawn works in cybersecurity. He says he’s also neurodiverse. He took up photography to try to balance out his more analytical side.
“I’ve always needed a creative outlet,” he said. “About two years ago, I landed on photography because it checked a lot of boxes at

once. It gets me outside. It scratches the artistic itch. And there’s enough technology involved to keep the other part of my brain happy.”
Parker came to photography by way of her love of birds – and as a way to spend more time with dad.
“We take pictures of birds together and it's fun being with him,” she said. “I get to learn things and see things that most people don’t, and I get to share all of it with my dad.”
The father-daughter duo are self-taught – YouTube videos about photography and a lot of trial and error. But their efforts have paid off. Both have won multiple awards and honors for their art.
Shawn has had multiple firstplace wins and Best of Show honors at photo competitions around Northern Virginia. He has competed internationally as well and took ninth place in the Animal Kingdom category in the Amateur Photographer of the Year contest in Great Britain.
Parker is also racking up accolades. In a contest put on by the Fredericksburg Photography Club, she entered six photos and every single one received a ribbon, including first, second, third and two honorable mentions. In a contest at Huntley Meadows in Alexandria, she won first place for youth and third place overall in the adult category.
“She loves that people respond to her pictures and it has been really great for her confidence,” Shawn said. “She is sharing something she genuinely loves and people are responding to it.”
For Shawn, photography is likely to remain a hobby, albeit one he spends a ton of time on, including editing, maintaining his website, writing a weekly photo blog, entering competitions and more.

However, for young Parker –this love of birds and photography could prove to be something even bigger in her future.
“Parker is a whole other story,” her dad said. “She regularly talks about wanting to travel the world as an ornithologist, studying and documenting birds for a living. For her, the photography and the birds were never really separate. It’s all just one big thing she loves and she’s already figuring out how to make it her life.”

Ashburn’s Lauren Katz is the new CEO of EatLoco Inc.

Lauren Katz’ resume sounds almost too good to be true. Winner of the first season of “The Great American Baking Show” on the ABC television network. Appearances on Food Network shows such as “Bake Master Battle” and “The Kitchen.” A three-time participant in the Pillsbury Bake Off. And the winner of $25,000 in the annual “Build a Better Burger” contest in Napa Valley.
To say that Katz knows her way around food and recipes and their ingredients is an understatement.
And now she’s taking on her biggest challenge yet. She just bought EatLoco Inc., the company that puts on huge
farmers markets right here in Ashburn and around Northern Virginia.
“I feel incredibly lucky to have my dream job – especially one that is so tailored to my interests and abilities,” she said.
Katz, who lives with her husband, Rob Sherwood, and their three kids in the Moorefield Station area of Ashburn, is now the CEO of EatLoco. She takes over from founder Dan Hine, who recently moved out of state.
For several years, Katz had worked with Hine – giving tours of the farmers market, having her own baked goods booth (Clouds of Cream Bakehouse) and, most recently, taking on the role of director of operations. This long involvement with EatLoco set her up perfectly to take over.
“The more I thought about [the opportunity], the more excited I got,” Katz said. “Everyone who knows me knows that I thrive under pressure and I love a personal challenge."
While the lineup changes periodically, EatLoco currently puts on two year-round farmers markets in Ashburn – Saturdays in the Ashbrook area (44505 Atwater Drive) and Sundays at the Bram-

The company also has seasonal markets at Metropolitan Park in Arlington on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
And the big news this spring is that EatLoco launched a Reston farmers market. Taking place every Sunday from the end of March to November, the new market is at the Halley Rise development off Sunrise Valley Drive.
“This location has the potential to be our biggest venue,” Katz said.
Other than the launch of the Reston market, Katz isn’t planning any major changes to the operation. She says the hundreds and even thousands of shoppers who visit each week can expect the same quality and the same longtime vendors as well as some new vendors.
Because these folks – the farmers, the cooks, the bakers, the artisans, the craft makers – are truly at the heart of the organization.
“The most important thing for me about EatLoco is that we support hundreds of local small businesses,” Katz said. “When you shop at our markets, you are supporting their families, their dreams, their livelihoods.” A

Sweet Gulab Jamun
When people think of Indian food, their minds probably quickly jump to curries, butter chicken, various paneers and – of course –the ubiquitous naan bread. But before you fill up on all those delicious dishes, make sure you save room for dessert – specifically the tasty treat known as Gulab Jamun.
It can be prepared in different ways, but typically Gulab Jamun is deep fried milk dough balls soaked in a syrup flavored with cardamom, rose water and saffron. Sometimes they’re even served warm with ice cream.
Ashburn has no shortage of Indian restaurants, and we found Gulab Jamun on the menu of at least a dozen in the area. Trust us – the next time you have a sweet tooth, give it a try.

A new pizza place opened in Ashburn this spring. We’re talking about Curry Pizza House, which started welcoming customers in March. The restaurant, part of a growing national brand, features both traditional American-style pizzas as well as pizzas with flavors from the cuisine of India, such as tandoori chicken and chili paneer. Curry Pizza House is in the Loudoun Station development off Shellhorn Road.

A new kids culinary experience called Taste Buds Kitchen is coming to Ashburn. It will be taking a vacant unit in Loudoun Station near the Ashburn Metro. The concept offers interactive cooking classes for kids as well as kitchen-themed birthday parties and other special events.
Ashburn’s second Kokee Tea location started its soft opening in April in the Ashbrook Commons shopping center off Ashburn Village Boulevard. The shop features Asian-inspired boba teas, milk teas, fruit teas and more. The first local Kokee Tea opened in Goose Creek Village off Sycolin Road in 2023.
The Burn tracked down some new details about The Athenian , a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant planned for the Goose Creek Village shopping center. It’s described as having “signature mezze, grilled seafood, premium meats, and carefully curated drinks in a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere.” It will seat roughly 200 guests both inside and on an outside patio. The Athenian is moving into the lower level space vacated by the Massaya Lebanese Restaurant & Bar.
Royal Biryani House , an Indian restaurant celebrating the cuisine of the city of Hyderabad, is in the works for the Moorefield Village retail center near Loudoun County Parkway and Ryan Road. The menu will include dishes such Chicken Dum Biryani, Egg Biryani and Lamb Tikka Masala.
Dr. Ts Shawarma , a Lebanese restaurant, opened this spring in Ashburn. The fastcasual eatery is in the Cameron Chase Village Center by the Ashburn Ice House. The menu features a variety of dishes, including rice platters served with chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, falafel or kofta.
Another day, another new coffee shop seems to announce it’s coming to the area. The latest is Karak House Coffee , which is working on a new location at the Dulles 28 Centre off Waxpool Road. That’s the center with the Wegmans and the Target off Route 28. The menu at Karak House centers around its signature Karak chai tea.
A multi-restaurant concept called Wonder is coming to the Broadlands Village Center. Wonder features different restaurants all sharing a single kitchen and is geared toward carryout and delivery. A customer can order chicken sandwiches from one restaurant, Chinese food from another and fresh cookies from a third – all in one order. Loudoun’s first Wonder store recently opened in Leesburg, and another one is headed to Sterling.
A new Dash In convenience store could be getting closer. Meetings were held recently with county officials about plans for a location in Ashburn at Loudoun County Parkway and Claude Moore Drive. The brand is known for its onsite restaurant that serves breakfast sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, salads and more. There is already a Dash In in the South Riding area, and this one in Ashburn has been in the planning stages for several years.
Huey Magoo’s , a Florida-based restaurant chain that specializes in chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches, is exploring Loudoun County for a future location. The Burn broke the news in April that the state’s first Huey Magoo’s is coming to the Arrowbrook Centre off Centreville Road in Herndon. And the owners – who live in Loudoun – tell us they eventually hope to bring the brand to Loudoun, perhaps to Ashburn.
The sign is up for a new Nepalese restaurant in the Old Ashburn Square retail center on Ashburn Road. That’s where Mandala Kitchen & Bar is preparing to open. The team behind the restaurant already owns a Nepalese market next door and is expanding the operation. At press time, an opening date hadn’t been announced.

It left with nary a quack. The Duck Donuts in the Broadlands Village Center quietly closed with no notice a few weeks back. No reason was given. The shop, which opened in 2024, specialized in cake-style donuts covered in toppings chosen by the customer.
By the time you read this, Bilstad’s Beignets , an Ashburn bakery specializing in the pillowy French pastries, will have closed for good. The owners announced May 3 would be their last day after nearly six years in business. This included four years at their location on Ashburn Road. The family said they are moving on to new ventures.
Momo & Grill , a Nepalese restaurant in the Ashburn Village Shopping Center, has closed – but maybe not for good. The restaurant posted on its website that it’s planning to reopen elsewhere soon. At press time, that new location had not been announced. Roadhouse originally opened in Ashburn in 2022 and was known for its lovely decor and hearty thukpa noodle soup, among other things. A

“On my way to Erie to see family, I stopped to see a friend for one night in Pittsburgh. My daughter and I decided to stay up on Mount Washington, hoping to catch the city at night or at sunrise. We woke just before dawn to an exceptional sight: Pittsburgh completely blanketed in fog. We got dressed and started walking the ridge, looking for compositions. It was mid-November 2025 and quite cold.
"We set up at one of the overlooks. As the sun rose, the fog began to clear and the other photographers packed up and left. We stayed a little longer. The funicular started its first run, and right at sunrise there was one final swell of fog. I leaned over the railing and fired off a few handheld frames as the car made its way down to the city.
"Afterward, my daughter and I grabbed hot chocolate at a local cafe and talked about how cool it was to have been there for that moment.”
