ow. Double wow. If there was any doubt that Ashburn residents like to support their favorite businesses, it can be safely put to rest. We were amazed by the response when we launched our first Best of Ashburn balloting in 2020, but this year’s vote was truly overwhelming. The number of voters who participated in the online polling back in February jumped 79% to 9,818, and the total number of votes cast increased almost 60% to 60,066. Over 2,000 Ashburn businesses, organizations, people and places received votes this year. In order to keep voting on track, my son was even persuaded to break away from Zoom school and video games to help verify nominations. And so, without further ado, we proudly present the Best of Ashburn 2021. Running a local business or organization is never easy. Doing so during a pandemic is even more challenging. So the 100-plus winners recognized on pages 21 through 52 of this month’s edition deserve big shout-outs for their entrepreneurship, resilience and determination – as do all the local businesses who were nominated. In addition to recognizing businesses, we also wanted this year to recognize more of the individuals who make our community special. For example, we divided “Favorite Teacher” into three categories – elementary, middle and high school – so that more of these dedicated professionals could be honored. In “Our Neighbors” section this month, you’ll meet Ashburn’s favorite high school teacher, Jason Augustowski, an English teacher at Riverside High School and theater director at Belmont Ridge Middle School. I wish I had English teachers who set up haunted houses and played quidditch. Another Best of Ashburn winner, Audrey Veloce, is profiled in this month’s “Amazing Kids” feature. Audrey is a senior at Briar Woods High School who is already building quite a reputation as an artist and graphic designer. (In fact, she’s a repeat Best of Ashburn honoree.) See some of her work and the stories behind the pieces starting on Page 8. Voting for Ashburn’s favorite golf course – another new category this year – was very close, but 1757 Golf Club emerged as the winner. As golf season gets into full swing(!), writer Joe Motheral explores the toughest hole on each of Ashburn’s four courses – oddly enough, that turns out to be hole number 7 at each one. I’m pretty sure I would be lucky to score a 7 on any one of these holes. It all adds up to our biggest issue of Ashburn Magazine yet – 72 pages – so as pandemic restrictions continue to ease, we hope you’ll use the Best of Ashburn as a guide to explore many of the local businesses and places that make our community unique. As you’re out and about, look for the “Best of Ashburn” banners and plaques that will soon be hanging at many of these establishments. Please support them and thank them for all their hard work – and special thanks to all of our readers who voted this year.

f you ever have the opportunity to meet Audrey Veloce and you feel as though she’s staring intently at you, don’t be alarmed. She’s a portraiture artist, so the details of a face are endlessly fascinating to her. “I like hyperrealism,” said the 17-year-old, who lives in Broadlands. “When you look at the features on a face, I like to replicate those things. I like using a lot of color and focusing on the miniscule details, really hyper-focusing on each feature to help bring the whole piece to life.” Audrey has received multiple honors for her artwork, the latest being named Best Artist in Ashburn Magazine’s Best of Ashburn 2021 survey, for the second year in a row. Now a senior at Briar Woods High School, she hopes to continue pursuing art in college — she’s been accepted to Virginia Tech, James Madison University and Virginia Commonwealth University. And she has her eye on becoming a graphic artist. With that in mind, we asked Audrey to share some of her favorite pieces with us and tell us a little about her process. 8 • ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021
AMAZING KIDS
“This is a piece loosely following a Bob Ross tutorial, focusing on vivid colors and a bright atmosphere.”
“This is a colored pencil/ graphite drawing of Chadwick Boseman, left purposefully unfinished because his life was cut short far too quickly. He was a source of inspiration to me and many others, an empowering individual who deserved so much more.”
“This piece shows my ‘inner child’ artwork in comparison to my current work now. The style is intentionally messy to convey the mixed emotions and conflict that comes along as you grow.”
ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021 • 9
AMAZING KIDS
“I drew this work as a semirealistic portrait of a singer I love. I first drew her face and hair with colored pencils, then digitally rendered highlights and butterflies surrounding her. ”
“I am currently working on this piece. It’s one of the largest pieces of artwork I’ve done, standing around 4-foot tall. It’s a combination of abstract and realistic art.”

ason Augustowski isn’t your typical high school teacher. He plays paintball with his students, sets up haunted houses in his classroom, and changes his facial hair more often than some people change their clothes. He also can claim the title of Best High School Teacher in Ashburn, thanks to topping the category in Ashburn Magazine’s Best of Ashburn 2021 survey. Augustowski has taught English at Riverside High School in Lansdowne for six years. (Yes, that’s technically Leesburg, but for our purposes, we count everything east of Goose Creek as Ashburn.) Before that he spent four years at Belmont Ridge Middle School, where he was also the school’s theater director, a role he continues in to this day. Kids are his world. He’s a sponsor for the organization PEER (Positive Experiences in Educational Relationships), which teaches kids basic counseling skills and allows older students to work with younger students. He founded the extracurricular Bowtie organization, in which teenagers talk to educators about their experiences to help teachers relate to today’s students. And he has founded a theater company to give aspiring thespians opportunities beyond drama club. Ashburn Magazine spoke with Augustowski from his home near Lansdowne Town Center about his career, his students and his passions.

ASHBURN MAGAZINE: WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO THE NEWS YOU HAD WON BEST HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER IN THE BEST OF ASHBURN CONTEST? OVERJOYED? PROFOUNDLY HONORED? THRILLED BEYOND BELIEF? JASON AUGUSTOWSKI: “I got the news from you and it was a wonderful surprise. I first heard I was even nominated from another friend who was also nominated. I was shocked to be chosen because Riverside and Belmont both have such extremely talented faculties and it’s an honor and privilege to work with them each day.”

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WON? WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR CONNECTION WITH YOUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES? “I teach kids first, not content. I have a relationship with every single kid. If I teach 150 kids, I know 150 kids, not just the 10 who raise their hands. Early in my career someone taught me, ‘No kid cares what you know until they know that you care.’ And that’s true.”
YOU ARE BIG INTO MUSICALS. YOU’VE DIRECTED QUITE A FEW AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AS WELL AS FOR LOCAL ARTS ORGANIZATIONS. WHERE DOES THIS PASSION COME FROM? “That was just my big thing growing up. I was in all the shows in high school. I did all the plays that I could. I was part of the marching band — I played saxophone and guitar. I had a band in high school. We played in coffee houses.”
WHAT IS THE ONE BOOK YOU THINK HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? “For me — it’s kind of a silly teen novel — but one that really impacted me was ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ by Stephen Chbosky. There’s heart in it. I felt like when I was reading it – I wanted to help that kid, by becoming a teacher like I had always wanted to do. I switched majors – ended up getting my bachelor’s in English literature and a master’s in curriculum and instruction at Virginia Tech, and I have loved life every single second since.”

OUR NEIGHBORS So, then we started doing Belmont summer musicals. And I’d been doing that for seven or eight years when I thought, ‘Why don’t I create my own LLC and do whatever I want?’ With the support of a bunch of parents, it’s up and running. We are doing all these reimagined Shakespeare plays. This year we have five in the works. It’s the original Shakespeare, but we tweak it and modernize the language. We just did a ‘Star Wars’ version of ‘Julius Caesar.’ We are about to do a werewolf version of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ We’re going to do ‘Mortal Kombat’ ‘Macbeth.’ This fall, we are going to get back to musicals when we hope it will finally be safe to have people singing in close quarters again.” BE HONEST — ARE YOU A
FRUSTRATED BROADWAY PERFORMER YOURSELF? “No, people ask me that all the time. ‘You’re so outgoing. You could have been an actor.’ I did all that when I was kid, but I’m not kidding — the best feeling is teaching and directing and coaching kids. They are better singers than I am. They are great dancers and performers.” WHEN A STUDENT GRADUATES FROM RIVERSIDE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE THEY WILL REMEMBER ABOUT MR. AUGUSTOWSKI? “I hope they remember how my class made them feel. At the end of the year, they are confident. They are hard workers. They say, ‘Thanks so much for letting me express myself.’ I don’t care if they

couple of years back, Jean Sardoni was looking for an artistic outlet for her son, Michael, who at the time was a senior at Battlefield High School in Haymarket. Michael is autistic and enjoys expressing himself through art. But after high school, opportunities to pursue art were few and far between. “Art makes him happy,” Sardoni said. “It makes him feel like he’s contributing, and it soothes his anxiety.” She wanted to find a way to help Michael contribute to the community while securing some independence for him and giving him some direction for the future. It sounded like a tall order, but then she discovered Zenaviv, an Ashburn-based organization that pairs artists on the autism spectrum with paying art jobs. People on the spectrum often have challenges communicating verbally, but sometimes find they can express themselves through other means such as art. Harish Bikmal founded Zenaviv after his son, Himal, “found his voice in his paintbrush.” Himal was diagnosed at age 2 with severe, non-verbal autism. Now 19 and a student at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, Himal is not usually expressive, but his father says when Himal sees his paintings hanging in the community, it’s easy to see and feel his pride and happiness. “Himal’s self-esteem really got a boost when his art was recognized and when others commented on it,” said Bikmal, who lives with his family in the Preserve at Goose Creek neighborhood. Bikmal officially launched Zenaviv in 2016 and gave up his career as a management consultant to work full time on the nascent brand. Zenaviv sells artwork created by artists on the autism spectrum to corporate businesses and also online. The organization’s customers include Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the Four Seasons and The Jefferson hotels in Washington, and C2 Education Centers, a national chain of test prep centers. Altogether, Zenaviv has more than 60 corporate customers and partners who have bought artwork and help to spread

its inclusive message. The artists receive two-thirds of the profits from the sale of their work. Zenaviv sells reprints of original works, which means artists can continue to earn profits. NOVA Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Ashburn purchased one of Himal’s paintings — a wintery nature scene — at a charity event, and it now hangs in one of their treatment rooms. “Every time Himal comes to visit, we can see how happy he is to see his art displayed. It brings joy to all of us,” said Dr. Valerie Woo, one of the practice’s partners. “What struck me about the piece was the way he could express himself through his work. All of our patients, parents and team are amazed at how beautiful it is.” Zenaviv’s name was the brainchild of Himal’s older brother, who wanted to convey the therapeutic nature of

art and the effect it had on his brother. He combined the Japanese word “zen,” which means enlightenment, with the Latin word “viva,” which means alive and can connote new life. He and his dad believed it was the perfect description of how the artists experience a new opportunity by using their talents and creating works of art.
Zenaviv artists — who currently number nearly 30 — have painted murals in public buildings, as well as created original works that can be printed and sold as jigsaw puzzles, magnets, mugs, greeting cards, bags and more. “The mission of Zenaviv is to harness this untapped talent — to leverage that value and improve the lives of these kids,” Bikmal said. For the Sardoni family, Zenaviv has been the right fit for Michael. “I was looking for an opportunity for Michael to work with his art in a place where they focus on strengths,” Jean Sardoni said. “I found that … through Zenaviv.” A Frannie Barnes is a content writer and editor and owner of ForWord Communication. THE BEST OF ASHBURN Meet Your Favorites
O
ne year ago, as we launched Ashburn Magazine’s inaugural Best of Ashburn survey, the community was just coming to grips with the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. It proved to be a trial by fire for many, but from the hottest fires come the strongest metals. Today, many Ashburn residents and businesses have found new strength and new purpose. With what we hope is the wind at our back, we have once again conducted our annual Best of Ashburn survey. We logged more than 60,000 votes cast by nearly 10,000 readers. It was a fantastic turnout that led to a fantastic list of people, places and businesses that are truly the Best of Ashburn.
Best OF THE BEST Ashburn is a diverse community, but one thing is clear — we like our seafood and we know where to find it. Ford’s Fish Shack repeated this year as the top overall vote recipient in the Best of Ashburn polling. In case you’re wondering, 2,203 businesses, people, organizations and places received votes this year, and here are the Top 10:

Raising a Socially Responsible Child Premier preschool focuses on raising compassionate, caring children All parents want their children to develop traits such as compassion, generosity and kindness, but just like math and reading skills, the traits associated with being a socially responsible person must be nurtured and developed over time. The earlier these softer skills are fostered in young children, the more likely they are to be successful in school and life. Social and emotional development begins at birth, and the brain develops more rapidly during the first five years of life than at any other time. Cultivating character traits that lead to social responsibility such as caring, honesty and cooperation during this time is just as important as building the foundation for traditional academic skills. That’s why character development is an integral part of our exclusive Balanced Learning® curriculum at Primrose Schools®. “It’s our goal to help children build the foundation they need to grow into happy, successful individuals,” said Mike Hummer, Franchise Owner of Primrose School at Moorefield Station. “Nurturing good character is an important part of that mission. Character lessons are woven through our program and daily classroom experiences to help children learn about social responsibility and apply specific character traits to authentic situations.”
Character development has been a part of Primrose’s approach to learning since the company’s inception more than 30 years ago. Today, children learn about character every day through books, discussions, art projects, puppet play, games and role playing. For example, the Primrose Friends puppets help teach children traits like responsibility, honesty, caring and cooperation. Og® the Bookworm represents caring and reminds children through class discussions, literature and role playing to be kind to others, show appreciation, and help others when they can. Teachers also read books to children that convey important life lessons through relatable characters and story lines. Children are encouraged to think of real examples and make connections to their own lives. In addition to classroom activities, Primrose® provides hands-on learning experiences to help children develop character traits like caring and generosity. Activities include collecting books for children in need, doing chores at home to raise money to purchase canned goods for local food banks, and collecting items for local animal shelters. This kind of experiential learning helps children learn first-hand the joy of giving back and helping others.

Landsdowne Hole No. 7
W
hat is it about Hole No. 7? Ashburn Magazine reached out to local golf pros and club managers to find out which holes are considered the most challenging at the community’s four golf courses. For some strange reason — each and every time, the consensus was that Hole No. 7 was the toughest, despite the courses being built at different times and having different designers. “I can’t explain it,” said Linda Gaudi, a PGA and LPGA pro who teaches golf at Brambleton. “Every course is distinctly different. I guess it’s just ‘lucky sevens’ — or maybe it’s ‘unlucky sevens’ in this case.” With this mystery in mind, here’s a look at the hardest holes and the features that confound golfers all season long. We also asked avid golfer Mackenzie Warren to chime in with his take on the No. 7s. The Brambleton resident competes in Virginia State Golf Association tournaments around the state and is a Top 100 course rater for Golf Week Magazine.
LINDA GAUDI ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021 • 55
Brambleton Golf Course 42180 RYAN ROAD The Brambleton Golf Course is a public course, part of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. It has trim fairways and rough laid out on relatively flat terrain. Golfers say it’s low priced and in good shape, and some refer to it as “very forgiving.” Dustin Bethauser is the general manager. He says the most challenging hole is probably No. 7, a par-5 that runs 589 yards from the back tees. It’s long and straight — but also narrow with woods on both sides. Even more challenging, there’s a small creek, hidden in the woods, that runs along the right side the entire length of the hole, then crosses the fairway in front of the green. “There are these big rocks on the far side of the creek – it’s not that wide, but the rocks make it look like it’s wider than it is,” Gaudi said.
Mackenzie’s Review: The seventh hole at Brambleton is a really stern test — one of the hardest holes I have played on a municipal course anywhere. From the championship tees, it is a monster. It requires three of your best shots of the day just to be near the green. The window for the drive is very MACKENZIE WARREN narrow, over a marshy creek bed. The woods on both sides are jail. Then for your second shot, you either have to hit a second consecutive bomb and clear a wall of rocks and a stream, or you have to lay up and hit your third shot through a narrow frame, still contending with the forced carry to an elevated green, which itself has two shelves and two bunkers. A par there is a relief, and a birdie a true achievement.
1757 Golf Club 45120 WAXPOOL ROAD 1757 is sometimes called a “shot maker’s course” because — with water on all but two holes — it takes a fair amount of precision to find success. The most challenging hole at the 1757 Golf Club is the 241-yard No. 7. That’s according to Dave Ahart, the course’s director of golf. “It’s a par 3 that probably averages a 4.7, which is a bogey. It’s definitely one of the hardest holes here,” Ahart said. “There’s an old saying that making a 2 on a par 3 is like skipping a hole. Well, making a 2 on No. 7 is like skipping two holes.”
DAVE AHART
Mackenzie’s Review: No. 7 at 1757 is a long, demanding par 3 in between two ultra-short par 4s. The two par 4s both are classic risk-reward opportunities, whereas No. 7 is all risk. You play uphill, more than 200 yards from some tees, across water and with water right. The bunkers are tough and the green narrow and deep. The depth has led me to hit everything from an 8-iron to a hybrid, depending on the wind. If you are left, flipping a wedge up to the green keeps the bunker and water in play. Par is excellent there. 56 • ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021
Belmont Country Club & Golf Course 19661 BELMONT MANOR LANE Playing at the Belmont Country Club course in Ashburn is experiencing a piece of local history. The manor house was built between 1799 and 1802 by the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence. President James Madison spent time there during the War of 1812. Fast forward two centuries, and the history continues when golf legend Arnold Palmer designed the golf course and played the opening round there in 2003. The hardest hole — as identified by club pro Adam Hibbs — is once again Hole No. 7, a par four that’s 454 yards from the back tees. “This hole might make you feel like taking up bowling,” Hibbs said. ADAM HIBBS “The first time I played that hole, I got a birdie,” said assistant pro Simon Dewsbury, fondly remembering one magic moment. “Ever since, I haven’t come close.”
Mackenzie’s Review: Palmer and his team did a lot with an inconvenient sliver at the edge of the property. The hole is long and very uphill overall. However, hitting a big tee shot to trim distance on the dogleg left brings trees and water into play. The smarter play is short and out to the right, but that could leave you 220 yards uphill to a well-guarded green with OB [out of bounds] to the right. Another issue: The fairway slopes downhill and left to a creekbed, even as you’re being asked to hoist a long and high approach to the right. In other words, you have a draw-biased lie from which you must play a fade-biased swing. I approach this as a par-5 I’m trying to birdie, versus a par-4 I’m trying to par. That frees me to plot out a threeshot route to the green if I don’t have the bestplaced tee shot. A miss 35 yards short and left leaves a pretty simple upand-down through the only unobstructed channel onto the green.
believes the Norman-designed course has the most challenging holes. Running along the banks of the Potomac River, the DAN WARNICK lowland course features plenty 44050 WOODRIDGE PARKWAY of marshes and water features. The Golf Club at Lansdowne, at the Lansdowne “Greg Norman named holes No. 6 through Resort along the Potomac River, has not one, not No. 9 as the ‘hardest mile in golf,’” Warnick said, two, but three separate golf courses: a Robert Trent singling out the 442-yard hole No. 7 in particular. Jones course, a Greg Norman course and a nine-hole “As you hit your approach, the green is guarded course called the Sharkbite. The different courses by a small bunker on the left and the water on the offer variety to the club’s members and their guests — right,” he said, adding that the open space near the from different types of grass to variations in terrain. Potomac adds to the challenges. “These holes are Dan Warnick is the pro at Lansdowne. He normally played into the wind.”
The Golf Club at Lansdowne
Mackenzie’s Review: The Norman course at Lansdowne punishes wayward drives. Like other holes there, to score on No. 7 you need to be not just long and straight, but long and straight to the right spot to attack the pin. One relief about No. 7: Unlike the several holes that run directly along the Potomac River, at least a slice on this slightly inland hole won’t mean your ball winds up in Maryland. Joe Motheral has been a writer for more than 50 years. He’s a member of the National Press Club and lives in Lansdowne Woods with his wife, Marjorie.

Diving In Pandemic creates a wave of backyard pool construction BY C H R IS WADSWO RT H
“L
ast summer was miserable,” Lexi Denniston said recently, thinking back on the long, hot pandemic summer of 2020. “These poor kids were inside all the time. It was like maternity leave times a million.” Denniston lives in the Village of Waxpool neighborhood with her husband, Andy, and two elementary school-age sons. Like many parents, she was caught off guard when the pandemic closed community and public pools around the country, as well as putting the brakes on travel to hotels and beaches. Water-loving kids were suddenly high and dry. That’s why this year the Dennistons are building a backyard pool. “It’s the perfect time,” she said. “We can’t 60 • ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021
go through another summer having to keep our kids contained to the house.” Local pool builders say the surge in requests is unlike anything they have seen — and national statistics bear that out. According to the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, a trade organization for pool builders, 2020 saw historic growth for the industry — up 24%. And it appears to be continuing into 2021. “Our members are telling us that they are contracted out well into 2022,” said Janay Rickwalder, a vice president for the alliance. “Calls from prospective customers increased in volume significantly [last year] — from 150 to 700+ calls per week.” You don’t need to tell that to Joe Gwiz, owner of Lewis Aquatech, a Chantilly-based pool builder with many Ashburn clients. “Everything shut down and people were in a panic,” Gwiz said. “They started
calling in a mass frenzy to try and get on our schedule. Not just last year, but this year, too. Because I think people didn’t know if community pools were going to open this year either.” Even if you can get on a builder’s schedule, you may find wait times are extended more than usual. This is because many of the subcontractors and equipment providers who support the swimming pool industry are struggling to keep up with the sudden high demand. For example, the Dennistons’ pool was dug late last fall, before the ground froze. But they had to wait until February before they could be scheduled to have their gunite applied, a cement-like mixture that forms the shell of a pool. After that, the pool progress slowed because the company installing the fence around their yard was backed up. Building codes don’t allow

HOME SWEET HOME industry will settle down. And public pools will reopen. But there’s no doubt that when this calm finally returns, there will be a lot more backyard swimming pools in Ashburn than there were prepandemic. Lexi Denniston, for one, is counting on their new family pool to make for a much happier summer. “I think it’s going to be completely DECKSCAPES OF VIRGINIA
certain steps in the pool process until the fence is in place. “Anything outdoor living right now is backed up. Good companies with good reputations have significant backlogs,” said Josh Desilets. His company, Deckscapes of Virginia, based in Catharpin, has more than a dozen projects underway in Ashburn and surrounding Loudoun County. “This past year, it was like putting gasoline on everything — it’s gone crazy.” Fingers crossed, things will eventually get back to normal. The pandemic restrictions will subside. The swimming pool building

ASHBURN’S
TOP 10
There’s one word for the real estate market: Hot. Listings are down, prices are up, and many sellers are receiving multiple offers within days of their houses going on the market. Countywide, the number of homes for sale was down 67% in March from the same month of 2020. In Ashburn, the number of closed sales was up 3.4% in March in the 20147 Zip code and 18.3% in 20148. The median sales price was up a whopping 20.8% in 20147 and 2.6% in 20148. Of note in the 20147 Zip code, the top two home sales in the past two months were both new townhomes in One Loudoun. Pictured below are the five highest-priced homes that sold in each of the two Zip codes between mid-February and mid-April, along with the sales price and other key information. Data and photos from Realtor.com.

Secrets of Ashburn’s Favorite Bartender Ahso’s Phil Duong takes us behind the scenes BY C HRIS WADSWORTH 66 • ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021
WINE&DINE
WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE DRINK? “My favorite drink to drink would be a nice, aged scotch on the rocks. My favorite drink to make — that’s hard to say. I like to tailor my cocktails to the guests, so when they ask me to make them ‘whatever I suggest,’ I have a certain couple of questions that I ask them. I 100 percent enjoy the challenge and creativity.”
F
rom Sam and Woody at “Cheers” to Isaac on “The Love Boat” to Lloyd at the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining” — everyone has a favorite bartender. And Ashburn has a favorite, too. Phil Duong of Ahso Restaurant in Brambleton was voted Best Bartender in Ashburn Magazine’s Best of Ashburn 2021 survey. The 39-year-old is a Loudoun native and Brambleton resident. He started at the Sweetwater Tavern in Sterling and later became a mainstay at the iconic Mokomandy. Then Duong’s old friend from grade school, Jason Maddens, called and said he was opening Ahso and wanted his help. Duong has been with the restaurant since Day 1. They say that a good bartender listens to his or her customers, gives sage advice when warranted and never reveals the secrets and confessions they hear. So that’s why we had to do some serious arm-twisting to persuade Duong to share a few secrets he’s accumulated in his nearly two decades of bartending.
ONE DRINK YOU WISH NO ONE WOULD EVER ORDER AGAIN “A Long Island Iced Tea. Anyone who orders a Long Island Iced Tea is probably underage and has probably never been to a craft bar. When we were drinking underage at bars, that was our go-to drink , so it’s always had that aura around it for me.”
MOST MEMORABLE NIGHT BEHIND THE BAR “It was New Year’s Eve 2006. I was the new guy at an unnamed bar in Arlington. The place had just built a ‘back-bar,’ essentially a sixseat full bar in the back of the restaurant. The other ‘veteran bartenders’ at the place would never allow themselves to be put in the back bar, so that’s where I was scheduled. At the last second, [someone] decided to make the rear entrance of the restaurant — accessible through the lobby of a hotel — the entrance point for the evening — which was right next to the back bar. As a result, all incoming guests stopped at my bar first,
ordered their first drink and dropped a large tip on the bar so that I would ‘take care of them’ for the evening. By the time they got to the main bar, they were already set up with a drink and had given up their biggest tip of the night. I made bank, and the ‘veteran bartenders’ were furious. Everyone also wanted to do a shot with the first bartender they saw [me], and I ended up falling asleep in the cab on the way home, with pockets full of cash.” WILDEST CONFESSION A CUSTOMER HAS SHARED “What happens at the bar, stays at the bar.” (Editor’s note: Booo!) A
BEST HANGOVER CURE (BESIDES NOT DRINKING AT ALL) “My personal one is a smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe and pho from Super Pho, a pho place in Herndon. The pho helps you sweat out all the toxins, and the smoothie adds nutrition back into your body.” ONE THING YOU WISH EVERY CUSTOMER KNEW “That everyone that is in the hospitality business is here for you; we’re here to make you happy. That’s the nice answer, a political answer. What I really want everyone to know is that making cocktails is really easy. My main job is to romanticize the food and drink so that when you come out to a restaurant, you have an actual memorable experience. We’re like a personal commercial behind the bar.” ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021 • 67

Rockwell’s America Explore the iconic artist’s work at a special exhibition BY JI L L DE V IN E
“L
ife as I would like it to be.” That’s how Norman Rockwell, one of the most beloved American illustrators of the 20th century, described his signature images of an idyllic America. Best known for his cover illustrations for Boys Life, the Saturday Evening Post, Look and other magazines, Rockwell used levity and humor to chronicle six decades of American history, gently walking his followers through the Great Depression, two world wars, civil rights milestones and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Ashburn Farm resident Josh Awtry has been a fan of Rockwell’s art since his childhood in Nebraska in the 1970s and 1980s. “Growing up and coming of age in the middle of America, looking at Norman Rockwell paintings reminded me of a place and time that we had just missed — that post-war, afterglow boom,” Awtry said. “The Main Streets with the barber shops and the stores and the cool signs. Looking at Rockwell’s works, you could feel what it was like 20 or 30 years before.” Now, thanks to a traveling exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, about an hour’s drive from Ashburn, Awtry and other Rockwell fans have the rare opportunity to view 27 of his original paintings up close. The exhibition also features vintage covers from all 323 of his Saturday Evening Post magazine commissions and a special print and digital display of his iconic Four Freedoms posters. Titled Norman Rockwell’s America, the exhibition is on loan from the National Museum of American Illustration in Rhode Island, and the American Illustrators Gallery in New York. Rockwell’s instantly recognizable style is highly lifelike and hyper-detailed. For many, his illustrations evoke nostalgia for simpler times with heart-warming scenes portraying ordinary people of all ages and walks of life doing everyday things — like threading a 68 • ASHBURN MAGAZINE • MAY/JUNE 2021
needle, reading the newspaper, shooting marbles or visiting the doctor. “Rockwell’s appeal is that he comments on the human condition in a way that we can all relate to,” said Nancy Huth, the museum’s deputy director of arts and education. “He focused on lighthearted emotion, friendships and family relationships, and his subjects covered the whole range, from posh international travelers and antique buyers to blue-collar

workers or children.” Rockwell was born in New York City in 1894. At age 14, he left high school to formally study art. By 19, he was hired as art director at Boys Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America. His first cover illustration was for Boys Life, and his freelance relationship with that publication and the Scouts lasted more than 60 years. On display at the museum is On My Honor, Rockwell’s oversized charcoal-on-
LOCAL ADVENTURES paper study for the February 1953 Boys Life cover. Winchester resident Gerald Crowell said he came to the exhibition specifically to see this piece, which features a Cub Scout, a Boy Scout and an Eagle Scout saluting in front of the Boy Scout Creed. “I’ve been with Troop 2 in Winchester for a long time, first as a Scoutmaster and now as an assistant Scoutmaster, and I like how realistically Rockwell painted the Scout uniforms, right down to the troop numbers and uniform patches – almost like a photo,” Crowell said. Also on display are print posters of Rockwell’s famous Four Freedoms – Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. Rockwell created the Four Freedoms, based on a 1941 speech by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to raise money for the war effort in 1943. Acknowledging that the America that Rockwell portrayed in his earlier works was mostly ethnically homogeneous, a digital display is next to the Four Freedoms titled For Freedoms. It presents a series of photographs of a more inclusive modern America and is on loan from an artist-led organization of the same name. Also on display are some of Rockwell’s later works reflecting milestones or changes in racial thinking, including 1963 Portrait of Nehru and 1966 Peace Corps in Ethiopia (Schoolroom). Other works, such as Rockwell’s famous 1964 Look magazine cover, The Problem We All Live With, which depicts little Ruby Bridges’ police escort into her New Orleans elementary school in 1960, are not part of the exhibition but are testimony to Rockwell’s evolving view of life in America. “When you look at his stuff later, it mirrors the journey that a lot of people took, and when you look at his work towards the end of his career, he took topics like race that people weren’t ready to face and put it right out into the mainstream,” Awtry said. “Had he not made that leap, I don’t think he would be as relevant today.” A Jill Devine is a freelance writer and former magazine editor from Loudoun County who writes for a variety of Virginia publications.
