Hospital, County Government Still Have Hurdles to Surmount SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

So far, so good, as the proposed land swap between Virginia Hospital Center and the Arlington County government continues to make its way through procedural steps. “We’re on track – moving along as we expected,” said Adrian Stanton, the hospital’s vice president and chief marketing officer, during a March 24 interview. Hospital officials are seeking to acquire the 5.5acre North Edison Street property, owned by the county government and located immediately north of the Virginia Hospital Center campus. In exchange, the hospital has offered the county government its choice of a number of parcels, cash or a combination. In September 2015, County Board members Continued on Page 22

Mental-Illness Advocates Still Pressing for Improved Facilities SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

As the process for a land swap between the Arlington County government and Virginia Hospital Center plays out, advocates for those facing mental illness continue to press the hospital to provide additional facilities. The Arlington Mental Health Alliance recently met with hospital officials – a meeting brokered by Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz – to press their effort. “We do very much feel like David vs. Goliath,” said Naomi Verdugo, a member of the alliance. The group says hundreds of patients in need of beds are turned away each year in Arlington, and that Continued on Page 22
