GARVEY, BEYER WIN; BONDS PASS

No Surprises as Democrats RUN THE TABLE IN ARLINGTON RACES SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Even as all eyes were on the presidential race Tuesday night, Arlington voters also rendered verdicts on races and issues closer to home Tuesday. There were no surprises in end result: Democratic County Board Chairman Libby Garvey won a second four-year term, taking 70 percent of the vote in a victory over perennial candidate Audrey Clement, while School Board candidates Nancy Van Doren and Tannia Talento were unopposed. County voters also supported all four local bond referendums on the ballot – providing new funds for schools, parkland, community infrastructure and transportation – with support averaging about 75 percent per bond issue. U.S. Rep. Don Beyer’s bid for a second two-year term in Congress proved an easy night; Beyer won about 67 percent of the Arlington vote against Republican Charles Hernick (29 percent) and independent Julio Gracia (4 percent), about his same margin of victory district-wide. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton garnered 73 percent of the Arlington vote to a scant 19 percent for Republican Donald Trump, with thirdparty and independent candidates trailing. Figures are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots, which were still being counted at 9:30 p.m. Turnout across Arlington was more than 80 percent of active voters in many precincts, according to election officials.

Winners included (clockwise from upper left) U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th), County Board Chairman Libby Garvey, School Board Chairman Nancy Van Doren and School Board candidate Tannia Talento.

Veteran Arlington Democratic political activists Richard and Jean Barton showed where their loyalties were during the Arlington Senior Democrats’ monthly luncheon in late October. Democrats easily won all local races in Arlington, but as of press time on Tuesday night, the presidential race remained too close to call.

Candidates, Parties Hustle for Votes Up to Last Minute SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

The week leading up to Election Day represented a last-minute flurry of local campaign activity. And in the words of an Elvis Presley song, Arlington’s candidates and political parties all seemed to be making the same pitch to the public: “I ain’t greedy, baby – all I want is all you got.”

Perhaps sensing extra votes would be needed to head off support for Donald Trump downstate, the chair of the Arlington County Democratic Committee in the waning days of the campaign called on Arlington to roll up 100,000 votes for Hillary Clinton in the county. “I think we can do that. I think so,” party chairman Kip Malinosky said Nov. 2, as he urged Arlington Democratic ac-

tivists to continue beating the bushes for every possible voter. His goal represented an aspiration bordering on stratospheric: The existing Arlington record for a presidential candidate was set in 2012 by Barack Obama with 81,269 votes. Arlington Democrats this year exContinued on Page 25
