County Board Backs Down on Rosslyn Field Issue Woodlawn Parents, Advisory Panels Complain That Decision Was Made With Insufficient Input SCOTT McCAFFREY
A POLITICAL TICKET IN THE MAKING?
Staff Writer
Arlington County Board members on July 16 voted to move ahead with redevelopment of a major parcel in western Rosslyn. But they’ve given themselves wiggle room on one piece of the puzzle, part of an effort to placate parents and students of H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program. Board members voted 5-0 to move forward with a multi-party agreement that paves the way for redevelopment of the socalled “WRAPS” (Western Rosslyn Area Plan Study”) parcel. But they agreed to take a second look at locating a temporary fire station on land designated for field space at the new Woodlawn. The action directs county staff to try and come up with alternate sites for the station, and a deadline of 60 days to do it. And it comes after the County Board and top staff came under fire for the way they handled the situation. County officials announced their plan to put the temporary fire station on the field space in early July, a timeline that eliminated the ability of the Planning Commission, Park and Recreation Commission, Public Facilities Review Committee and the project’s building-level planning commission to scrutinize it. For a County Board that entered 2016 Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton headlined a July 14 rally at Northern Virginia Community College, and was with a promise of complete transparency, joined by – among other local leaders – U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine in what may have been a try-out of a potential presidential/vice presidential putting the proposal on the rocket-docket ticket for November. Find coverage of the local appearance on Page 4.
