Community members may get a better idea of plans for a new specialty high school in coming weeks. Arlington Public Schools officials are planning to roll out concepts at two upcoming meetings – March 30 at 7 p.m. at Wakefield High School and April 4 at 7 p.m. at Yorktown High School – following the conclusion of a publiccomment period. As of March 9, the school system had received nearly 1,500 comments from the public about both potential locations of the new school and the curriculum. “We’re really trying to tap into the community and get as much feedback as we can,” said Tara Nattras, the school system’s assistant superintendent of instruction. (The feedback form will remain open through March 17 at www.apsva.us/engage.) School officials are aiming to develop a 1,300student high school, smaller than existing general-purpose high schools – Washington-Lee, Wakefield and Yorktown – but large enough to meet short-term needs for an expected burst of students moving up through the system. School Board Chairman Nancy Van Doren said the goal is to keep the planning process moving forward. “We have a lot of decisions to make – it’s nice to see everybody getting their arms around that,” Van Doren said.
