Is Deal Close on Country-Club Tax Dispute? Clubs Could Get Lower Assessments, Tax Refunds as Part of Expected Agreement SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer
No one will say so publicly, but it appears the county government and two Arlington country clubs are close to settling their legal and legislative battles over real-
estate assessments and tax bills. Multiple sources on various sides of the issue have told the Sun Gazette in the past week that a framework agreement is in place that would provide the two clubs – Washington Golf and Country Club and Army Navy Country Club – with a
lower assessment and several years’ worth of tax refunds. Negotiations on such an agreement have been ongoing, and were one of the reasons given by Gov. Northam in vetoing legislation that would have forced the county government to capitulate to the
clubs. The clubs also have been engaged in legal proceedings against the county, which could be terminated if an agreement is signed. Continued on Page 22

One Last Hurrah for Current, Former School Board Members Arlington School Board members past and present gathered April 19 for one last hurrah in the meeting room that had been a home-away-fromhome over the past 50 years. Two dozen former members – some from the era of appointed boards, the others since the 1990s, when members have been elected – gathered on the

same day their counterparts currently serving on the board met for the last time in the board room, located on the main floor of the Arlington Education Center. Starting next month, meetings will be held in the school system’s new administrative center in leased space in the Penrose area. Two former superintendents also
were on hand: Art Gosling (1985-97) and Robert Smith (1997-2009). “It was a really wonderful occasion,” said School Board member Nancy Van Doren, who helped organize the gathering. “We got to hear from each one of them speak a little bit of what the issues were of their time. We had a good time listening.”
A number of past School Board members in attendance went on to hold other office: Mary Margaret Whipple served on the County Board and in the state Senate; Judy Connally went on to the House of Delegates; and Libby Garvey and Mary Hynes gravitated to Continued on Page 22
