Election Season Is Set to Kick Off
HEADED FOR THE OPEN FIELD
Civic Federation Debate Will Open County Board, School Board Races SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer
Candidates for County Board, School Board and the 49th House of Delegates district will square off at a candidate forum sponsored by the Arlington County Civic Federation, starting the fall campaign season the day after Labor Day. The federation’s executive committee on Aug. 13 affirmed plans for the forum, to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Hazel Auditorium at Virginia Hospital Center. “We’re pretty much the kickoff” to campaign season, said Sarah Shortall, the Civic Federation’s treasurer. Candidates will be asked to provide opening statement, then answer between three and five
questions, depending on time availability. A reception for the candidates will be held at 6:30 p.m. “We want people to come talk to them,” Shortall said. To free up time for the contested races at the September meeting, the Civic Federation will host three unopposed House of Delegates candidates at their October meeting. Doing so also will provide enough time at the October meeting to allow for questions to the incumbent delegates – Patrick Hope, Rip Sullivan and Mark Levine – to come from the audience. With questions, the unopposed candidates “find out what their constituents are interested in; it is part of a community service,” said Terri Prell, who chairs the Civic Federation’s executive committee. The public is invited to both events, but only federation delegates and alternates will be able to ask questions of candidates.
