As they gas up the tank for a twomonth sprint to Election Day, Arlington County Democrats may find themselves representing the difference between victory and defeat statewide – and the message the result sends in the first major election of the Donald Trump era.

“You are in an enviable position. The nation is watching, history has its eyes on us,” Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez said at the Arlington County Democratic Committee’s annual Labor Day chili cookoff, which drew several hundred to Lyon Park Community Center.

Fortified by a vast array of chili options and enjoying a welcome break from traditional late-summer humidity, the party’s rank-and-file enjoyed the political equivalent of a high-school pep rally as they moved into political high gear.

School Board Goes Ahead With Controversial Purchase SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Despite concerns raised by civic leaders over both costs and transparency, Arlington School Board members on Aug. 17 approved purchase of a home adjacent to Glebe Elementary School for use by emergency vehicles.

The presidents of both the John M. Langston Citizens Association and the Waycroft Woodlawn Civic Association, neighbors to the school, decried a lack of public involvement prior to the purchase.

“This was not a cohesive, inclusive process – it was done while people were on vacation,” said Alexandra Bocian, president of the Langston civic group. “People didn’t have enough time to be engaged or participate.”

School staff say purchasing the home at 1721 North Culpeper St. will allow for easier access to the elementary school by emergency vehicles. Currently, the only vehicular access to the school is via an easement from Capital Life Church, which funnels traffic to and from North Glebe Road.

“It sounds like we have a done deal,” sighed Sharon Dorsey, president of the Waycroft Woodlawn group, who nonetheless asked board members to hold off on a purchase.

“We still have questions; community involvement really hasn’t been applied,” Dorsey said.

Superintendent Patrick Murphy apologized for a lack of engagement, but School Board members said there wasn’t much more they could do, since negotiations for the purchase of property must be conducted in private.

“We certainly don’t want community members feeling like they’re not being heard,” School Board Chairman Barbara Kanninen said. But, she said, “we need to be realistic about how much proactive communicating we can do.”

Two weeks prior to the Aug. 17 vote, the matter was discussed as an information item during a School Board meeting.

Many in the neighborhoods first heard about the matter when it was covered in the newspaper.

“We had no time to get input from our residents,” Dorsey said.

Exactly what concerns about the purchase were held by residents largely were left unanswered; School Board member Reid Goldstein attempted to ask Dorsey and Bocian for more detail, but found himself shushed by Kanninen, who said it wasn’t board policy for a back-and-forth with the public at that point in the meeting. Goldstein earlier had said he was “troubled by the lack of notification and transparency.”

Murphy suggested that, in future, school staff could informally notify neighbors when a particular parcel was being considered for purchase. But that brought brushback from board member

Va. Business Group No Fan of Local Legislators

Organization Declines Endorsement of Dels. Hope, Sullivan, Lopez, Levine SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

They perhaps weren’t holding their collective breath to begin with, but members of the Arlington delegation to the House of Delegates failed to gain support of the National Federation of Independent Business in their reelection bids.

The organization on Aug. 23 announced its endorsements in 53 of the 100 delegate races statewide. All 53 went to Republicans.

The organization’s political support is based on the candidates’ positions and records on small-business issues.

“Our members support the candidates who support small business,” said Nicole Riley, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. “We need legislators who understand the challenges facing Virginia’s job-creators. We need to elect the candidates who oppose higher taxes and support sensible regulations that will enable small businesses to grow and create jobs.”

Three members of the Arlington delegation – Patrick Hope (D-47th), Rip Sullivan (D-48th) and Mark Levine (D-45th) – are unopposed for re-election in November. In the 49th District, Democratic incumbent Alfonso Lopez is being challenged by Republican Adam Roosevelt.

The National Federation of Independent Business made no endorsement in the 49th District race.

Farm Bureau PAC Endorses in 3 of 4 Local Races: The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s political-action committee has endorsed three members of the Arlington legislative delegation for re-election.

Dels. Mark Levine (D-45th), Patrick Hope (D-47th) and Rip Sullivan (D-48th) were among candidates in 94 of the 100 House of Delegates races endorsed by the organization.

“The mission of Virginia Farm Bureau Federation AgPAC is to support candidates who understand the value the agriculture industry brings to the commonwealth and the issues that surround it, whether through their platforms or their voting records in the General Assembly,” said Wayne Pryor, chairman of the PAC’s board of trustees. “We look forward to working with them to help support Virginia’s No. 1 industry.”

The organization to date has not issued an endorsement in the 49th District, which features incumbent Democratic Del. Alfonso Lopez being challenged by Republican Adam Roosevelt.

Lopez Endorsed by Latino Victory Fund: In an effort to triple current Latino representation in the Virginia General Assembly, the Latino Victory Fund has announced endorsements of three candidates – one incumbent and two newcomers – in House of Delegates races.

Lopez, who faces Republican Adam Roosevelt in a district that leans heavily Democratic, said he was happy to receive support “in laying the groundwork for increased Latino representation in Richmond.”

“There’s no doubt Hala and Elizabeth are committed to improving the lives of Virginia families, and I would welcome the opportunity to fight alongside these remarkable, strong Latinas.”

Were Guzman or Ayala (or both) to win office Nov. 7, they would make history as the first Latinas elected to the Virginia legislature.

Local Candidates to Participate in Live-Stream Debates: Candidates in the 49th House District race have been invited to participate in a Sept. 11 televised and live-streamed forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area.

Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-49th) and Republican challenger Adam Roosevelt have been asked to participate in the forum, which also will feature candidates from several other adjoining districts.

(The 49th includes precincts in Fairfax County as well as Arlington County.)

Also invited to participate is Del. Mark Levine (D-45th), who is unopposed. While centered in Alexandria, Levine’s district includes a small portion of Arlington.

Civic Federation Rescinds Forum Invitation to Candidate

Leadership of the Arlington County Civic Federation rescinded a debate invitation to a School Board candidate, saying he failed to return required paperwork in time to allow participation.

As a result, Mike Webb was expected to be watching from the audience, rather than taking part, as the forum went forward Tuesday evening.

Civic Federation president Duke Banks said Webb was the lone contender who failed to sign and return the form required by the federation, agreeing to the rules of the debate, by the Sept. 1 deadline.

“All candidates, other than Mr. Webb, complied,” Banks told the Sun Gazette.

“The form in question has been used in 4

previous years in putting on our traditional candidates’ forum, and it has never been a problem until now. As much as we did not want to do this, we felt that rules were rules.”

In an e-mail sent to the media and political leaders, Webb accused the Civic Federation of “duplicity” but did not address specifics.

Webb’s exclusion means that Monique O’Grady, who in May defeated incumbent James Lander to garner the Arlington County Democratic Committee endorsement, was slated to be the only School Board candidate taking part in the

forum. Candidate Allison Dough earlier told Civic Federation leadership she had other commitments that day, and could not make the event.

This is not the first time Webb, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for U.S. House of Representatives last year, has found himself tripped up by paperwork requirements. Earlier this year, he sparred with county election officials over requirements for gaining access to the ballot in the School Board race. Ultimately, he qualified.

Returning High-Schoolers Getting More Menu Options SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Students in Arlington’s three main public high schools are returning to class this fall with a new lunch option.

The “Café + TeSCHOOL ria” concept allows to select BOARD students ingredients in four NOTES steps to build more nutritious meals. The option provides students with additional amounts of vegetables than other lunches, school officials said.

Those choosing the option will pick a base of grain, salad or a wrap, followed by a protein (chicken, ground beef or cheese) and toppings of vegetables, cheese and sauces, along with a dressing. Recipes are designed to be low in sodium, fat and sugar.

The new concept is part of a partnership between the school system and Cuisine Solutions, and will feature a more modern, fast-casual dining experience with multiple cuisines aimed at eliminating “menu fatigue,” school officials said.

The option will be available at Wakefield, Washington-Lee and Yorktown high schools.

APS Food-Services Chief Taking Part in Regional Initiative: The director of Arlington Public Schools’ food and nutrition services is part of a new regional working group aiming to change perceptions about school lunches.

“Healthy students are our priority,” said Amy Maclosky, who heads Arlington’s school-nutrition programs, “and we take great pride in our desire to be innovative in our approach to change the negative perception that persists in our culture.”

Maclosky has been tapped to participate in a working group of the Real Food for Kids initiative. Tagged “The Lunch Room Collective,” it aims to connect partners in the education, agriculture, non-profit and policy-making sectors to ensure healthy meals in schools, and that an appropriate message is sent to students about healthy choices.

“Unfortunately, the narrative around school meals – one of stigma and poor quality – persists, impeding improvement in even the most proactive and innovative school food programs,” organizers said.

“Changing school food requires changing school food culture.”

The effort includes representatives from school systems in Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun counties as well as representation from organizations in the District of Columbia.

“We are excited to begin this unique partnership,” Real Food for Kids’ cofounder and chairman Jocelyn Hsu said.

“With great minds and diverse perspectives coming together . . . we anticipate finding real solutions for overcoming barriers to students enjoying nutritious meals

during the school day.”

Among the group’s initial focuses: how to better integrate food services staff with the overall school culture, and how to address the time allotted for lunch and its impact on student wellness.

Real Food for Kids is a Fairfax-based nonprofit that works with school communities to elevate the quality and character of school food; develop and deliver programs that advance literacy in nutrition and health; and support students, parents and schools is building a culture of health that spreads to their homes and communities. Public-Comment Rules for School Board Meeting Revised: Arlington School Board meetings will be starting earlier this school year, but those wanting to speak out during the public-comment period will not have to rush quite so fast to get there.

While board meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. – a half-hour earlier than in previous years – the public-comment period will not start until at least 7 p.m. Routine board matters will precede the comment period, which itself will come before information and action items before the board.

Speakers at the public-comment portion of the meeting can discuss issues that are not on the agenda for that evening.

They have two minutes to make their case.

Traditionally, School Board members have set a limit of 30 minutes for publiccomment speakers, although few meetings see so much time occupied. (Their counterparts on the County Board have a similar public-comment period at the start of their meetings, and while they also have a 2-minute time limit per speaker, there is no limit on total time turned over to the process.)

This year, those wishing to speak during School Board comment periods can sign up online up to a week before the meeting on the school system’s Web site at www.apsva.us. Speakers also can sign up at the meeting, and will be taken in the order of sign-up as long as time remains.

For those speaking at hearings on specific matters being heard during the board meeting, speaker slips can be turned in at the meeting any prior to board’s start of consideration of the item.

The agenda for each meeting generally is posted a week prior to the meeting date.

Highs & Lows THUMBS UP: To the start of school, which we’d wager most Arlington students (and nearly 100 percent of their parents) were happy to see arrive.

With neighboring Fairfax County now having moved to a pre-Labor Day opening, the pressure likely will be on Arlington school officials to do the same. (In order to skirt the state regulation about not starting classes before the holiday, Arlington can always do what those sneaky petes in Fairfax did: Cancel classes at the drop of the hat in even minor inclement weather, in order to qualify for an exemption from the rules.)

Let’s toss a hand grenade to

Arlington school officials, asking them to consider starting classes a week earlier in future years, but keep the closing dates unchanged.

Yep: stuff another week’s worth of learning into the school year.

Imagine if that actually was proposed by a School Board member; there would be 1,000 reasons brought up why it couldn’t happen.

But if we want to stay competitive as a nation, we’re going to have to scrap the antiquated school calendar and bring it up to 21st-century standards.

The world is indeed passing us (as in the U.S.) by on education; wouldn’t it be great for Arlington to be in the vanguard of new thinking about extending the school

year? It’s would be the “worldclass” thing to do, although we are not holding our breath.

THUMBS UP: To the Arlington Community Foundation, for its selection of John Milliken as recipient of the 2017 William T. Newman Jr. Spirit of Community Award.

A former County Board member and state secretary of transportation, Milliken long has been part of the fabric of civic life in the community. And even now in his retirement years, he remains a goto resource on issues ranging from affordable housing to education.

We’re looking forward to the Nov. 9 awards luncheon.

A Local Arts District Has Many Possibilities Editor: Two years ago, the Sun Gazette published “Time to Envision the Future of Shirlington Nauck Crescent,” a letter outlining a community blueprint for the revitalization of the area.

The letter noted how this South Arlington neighborhood “is uniquely positioned to become an industry and arts cluster for Arlington. A community where existing industry and future talent offer mutual support to one another.”

On Sept. 5, an Arlington committee charged with studying this idea will report on its recommendations. This letter provides a glimpse into what you may learn.

The Arts District Committee, part of the Four Mile Run Valley Working Group, examined the potential creation of an arts district in the study area, west of South Nelson Street to Walter Reed Drive.

In approaching this task, committee members studied, interviewed and,

in some cases, visited more than 25 arts districts from around the globe. Each district was assessed for its positive and negative attributes, its function and use.

Each of these elements was then considered and applied to the specific study area in the Nauck community. Further research was undertaken to examine zoning issues, needs of current arts facilities, financial management, boundaries, business and arts development, among other topics.

Committee members – representing businesses, property owners, artists and the community – all participated in the research and ensuing discussions at open, public meetings. The recommendations reflected in the upcoming report all achieved unanimous support from committee members.

The committee felt strongly that an arts quarter embrace both the cultural arts and the industrial nature of the area. The melding of uses is important for sustainability and long-term eco-

The arts may also fuse with light industry to include culinary arts, metalworking, furniture-making shops and technological innovation/maker spaces.

These examples are meant not to limit, but rather to highlight, some of the uses envisioned. The arts-and-industry quarter should espouse innovation, creativity, skill and talent.

The committee hopes to make its 22page report – which expands on essential elements – organizational structure, financial and growth strategies, available to the public after the Sept. meeting.

Airbnb-Style Rentals Now Bringing Cash to County SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Arlington’s recently adopted rules regulating Airbnb-style short-term rentals in the county are beginning to funnel some cash into the government’s coffers.

“We have established 67 business-tax accounts” as of late August, Commissioner of Revenue Ingrid Morroy told the Sun Gazette.

Those accounts tee up property owners to pay business-license fees, personalproperty taxes and transient-occupancy taxes related to using homes for shortterm rentals.

Through July, just under $18,000 had been assessed via the 7.25-percent transient-occupancy tax, which is split between the local and state governments, with another $780 brought in via the business-license tax, Morroy said.

As of late August, the county government has issued 101 permits allowing homeowners to rent out a portion of their homes to paying customers on a shortterm basis. Not all of those who have obtained permits are necessarily planning to rent out space in the immediate future, and they are not required to apply for business-tax accounts until they are ready to do so.

Morroy said those who are renting out their homes should check in with her office and set up accounts for paying taxes,

instead of trying to skirt the law.

“The sharing economy is growing, and we want to make sure that taxes are assessed fairly and equitably across the board,” she said.

County Board members last December approved rules regulating short-term rentals, which they acknowledged have been going on – technically illegally, if not particularly surreptitiously – for years.

How much might the county government stand to gain? Morroy said the answer remains something of a shot in the dark, although she estimated it could range anywhere from $250,000 to $1.5 million annually once all operators are registered.

“It is challenging to estimate potential revenue for this type of business, as nightly rates and percentage of utilization differ between rented spaces,” she said. “Most providers do not rent continuously, but only sporadically.”

The General Assembly in 2016 passed legislation prohibiting localities from collecting taxes on homestead rentals, but the measure was vetoed by Gov. McAuliffe. In the 2017 legislative session, localities successfully lobbied for no handcuffs being placed on them.

The Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s membership found itself split on the issue of short-term rentals, and took no formal position when it was being discussed last year by the County Board.

The Arlington County Civic Federation launched an extensive questionnaire, which drew more than 600 responses and helped county officials fine-tune the proposal that ultimately was adopted.

Last year, Arlington officials estimated there were about 1,600 property owners offering their homes as short-term rentals in the county, even though there were no county ordinances that permitted them to do so.

Morroy, who is an elected constitutional officer, said despite an initial learning curve, most people have found it fairly easily to file these taxes online. “We encourage that – customers can always call

The County Board’s action to legitimize short-stay rentals did not take away the rights of condominium associations and homeowners associations to impose their own requirements, including a prohibition on short-term rental of units, if they choose. n n n

AHC Inc. is on the hunt for volunteers for its after-school and teen-tutoring programs, which help youth from kindergarten through 12th grade build the academic skills they need to succeed.

The program, now 25 years old, has seen a variety of successes: 100 percent of participating seniors graduate from high school; most go to college; and elementary-school students have shown significant improvement in reading and math skills.

In the after-school program, volunteers work with elementary-school students once a week for an hour (between 4 and 6 p.m.). In the teen-tutoring initiative, volunteers are paired with one student for the school year, and meet one hour per week between 6 and 8 p.m.

An orientation session for the afterschool program will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6 and orientation sessions for the teen-tutoring programs will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and again on Thursday, Sept. 14. All will be held at 6 p.m. at Gates of Ballston, 4108 4th St. North.

College has signed a transfer agreement with Radford University, one that will ensure all NVCC credits will be accepted toward Radford’s degree requirements.

Community-college president Scott Ralls said the Aug. 28 signing represented an “historic, monumental day” for the university. Ralls signed the agreement at the college’s Annandale campus with Radford president Brian Hemphill.

“We’re committing to ourselves that we’re going to not only have guaranteed admissions, but, with select institutions that are willing to step up like Radford, we’re going to be guaranteed transfer partners,” Ralls said in a statement. “That means we’re going to be working with each other to make sure we’re collectively looking at the pathways to transfer, and making sure that the courses we’re advising our students to take will transfer to other universities.”

The community college currently has guaranteed-admissions agreements with more than 30 colleges and universities.

While these agreements guarantee community-college students will be admitted to those educational institutions, they do not guarantee that all of the students’ credits will transfer. Radford is the first university to guarantee the transfer of credits.

“We are excited about this first-of-itskind partnership in Virginia,” Hemphill said. “We are mindful that the increasing cost of higher education is at the forefront for our students and their families. This agreement will establish a truly seamless transfer process.”

With 2,326 degrees conferred on minority students, the university was tied for 44th nationally out of more than 2,700 institutions, in a study by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

The 2,326 degrees to minority students represent an increase of 10 percent from the year before, Mason officials said.

Virginia Commonwealth University was next among Virginia universities (at No. 53 nationally), with 2,196 degrees awarded.

Mason ranked 25th nationally, and first in Virginia, in bachelor’s degrees conferred to Asian Americans with 966, an increase of 4 percent from 2015-16.

The university also made gains in bachelor’s degrees conferred to African Americans (500, up 15 percent) and Hispanics (638, up 11 percent).

Diverse Issues in Higher Education used federal data for its report on the nation’s top degree-producing institutions for minority students.

Keeping up with technology, maintaining sufficient inventory, competition from nontraditional participants and profitability are among the biggest challenges for real estate firms, according to the National Association of Realtor® 2017 Profile of Real Estate Firms.

Conversely, for a third year in a row, the survey found the vast majority of firms have an optimistic outlook for the future of the industry’s growth.

Although expectations have slightly decreased from last year’s survey, firms remain confident and expect profitability from all real estate activities to increase or stay the same over the next year.

The report is based on a survey of firm executives who are members of the National Association of Realtors and provides insight into the business characteristics and activity of firms, benefits and education provided to agents and outlook for the future.

Real estate firms are sensing strengthened competition this year, as 50 percent of firms expect competition to increase in the next year from nontraditional market participants, up from 43 percent in 2016.

Half of firms expect competition during the same period to increase from virtual firms (up from 47 percent in 2016), while only 15 percent expect competition will increase from traditional brick-and-mortar firms.

According to the survey, 60 percent of commercial firms expect profitability from all real estate activities to increase in the next year, compared to 64 percent in 2016.

Residential real estate firms are more optimistic compared to commercial firms; 62 percent of firms expect profitability to improve, compared to 65 percent in 2016.

The typical residential real estate firm’s brokerage sales volume was $6.2 million in 2016 (down from $6.3 in 2015), while the typical commercial real estate firm’s brokerage sales volume was $4.0 million in 2016 (down from $4.5 in 2015).

The survey states that 43 percent of firms reported they are actively recruiting sales agents in 2017, down from 47 percent in 2016. This is more common among residential firms (49 percent) than commercial firms (29 percent), the survey found.

Group Set to Present Options For Its Proposed ‘Arts District’ SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

What could an arts district in the Shirlington-Nauck corridor look like? County residents are COUNTY slated to get a better idea NOTES shortly, as the Arts District Committee of the Arlington County government’s Four Mile Run Working Group is slated to present recommendations in early September.

The committee, led by Robin Stombler, looked at possibilities surrounding creation of an arts-themed corridor from South Nelson Street to South Walter Reed Drive.

“The committee felt strongly that an arts quarter embrace both the cultural arts and the industrial nature of the area,” Stombler wrote in a letter to the editor of the Sun Gazette.

The arts quarter is one idea percolating as the county government attempts to consider options surrounding the future of the corridor, which includes some of the last remaining industrial uses in Arlington.

The arts-district committee is slated

to present its proposals to the full Four Mile Run Working Group on Sept. 7.

The task force already has met once with County Board members; future work sessions are likely but have not been schedules.

The corridor is across Four Mile Run from Shirlington, which already is home to Signature Theatre.

Ribbon-Cutting Set for Expanded Gymnastics Space: Expansion of the gymnastics space at Bacroft Sport & Fitness Center will be celebrated on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. at the facility, 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive.

An expansion of the facility has more than doubled the room available for training and classes, county officials said.

The community is invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony. No registration is required.

Arlington offers gymnastics programs for all ages, housed at Barcroft Community Center and at Madison Community Center. Competitive teams – the Arlington Aerials (girls) and Arlington Tigers (boys) train at Barcroft.

Home to the inaugural NoVa Wellness & YogaFest Retreat, the 3-day event offers over 50 Yoga classes, meditation sessions, nature walks, wellness workshops and musical performances, all wrapped within the beauty only nature can provide.

DURING THE DAY

Choose from among dozens of options for a full day of renewal through yoga classes, meditation, nature walks, wellness workshops and more. The schedule allows you to plan ahead - but at a leisurely pace, with plenty of time between sessions to linger after a class or stroll to the next tent. The all-access day passes and weekend passes include classes and the evening music, so enjoy as many classes as you like or skip a class and spend a few hours hiking, meditating or just strolling around Morven Park’s reflecting pool.

Leave time in your weekend to visit Harmony Row, to peruse and purchase holistic products so you can take the calm home, and Wellness Way, where you can sign up for individual sessions with well-known alternative healers and wellness practitioners. This is your chance to meet with an Angelic Communicator, an Ayurvedic Astrologer (be registration starts at 7 a.m. for the first set of classes at 8 a.m. Each Yoga class runs one hour, with some of the Workshops running longer. Each day ends with live musical performances from 6-8 p.m. in the Music Grove. Not just for yoga groupies, the NoVa YogaFest is a carefully crafted experience for all seeking calm and wellness in our Northern Virginia communities. Award-winning event founder Miriam Nasuti credits her own personal journey as the inspiration to create and share this deeply meaningful “rest-ival” after attending yoga festivals in other areas and recognizing the need in Northern Virginia. Her vision is unlike any other yoga event in the area, adding distinct local flavor and focus, and bringing together a mix of hometown favorites and nationally acclaimed yogis.

The YogaFest’s Chef is Matt Warshaw of Pure Perfections Catering in Herndon, who will be preparing vegetarian and vegan options featuring locallysourced produce. The bracelet includes breakfast, lunch and dinner with healthy snacks and infused waters in between.

A sample lunch menu starts with a garden-fresh salad bar and fresh fruit salad, Beet Carpaccio with goat cheese (served on the side) as a first course, and an entrée of Vegetarian Fried Brown Rice with Roasted Bean Sprout Tofu accompanied by steamed greens with Quinoa.

The meal is served with a selection of infused waters and tea.

“While patrons are invited to pack a picnic, from first-hand experience I can honestly say the fresh and local food tent is the way to go,” adds Nasuti. “Our menu includes abundant and tasty vegetarian and vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus, the camaraderie of the YogaFest food tent is such a part of the overall experience, we’re confident all our patrons will see the value of this

At many festivals, the dining tent becomes the hub of activity, offering a social element of fun and conversation. Not to mention that having food prepared for you enhances the feeling of “calm” for the weekend. There will not be food trucks or other dining options available at Morven Park, and no food tent passes will be sold on site, so buy your dining bracelet early and online.

T

he heart of the NoVa Wellness & YogaFest Retreat is the practice of yoga - as many kinds and variations of yoga as there are hours in the day.

The weekend features yoga classes taught by registered instructors each with a minimum 200 RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) hour training. Classes range from National Yoga-circuit couple Andrea Boyd and Jeffrey Cohen’s emotionally charged “Born to be Wild” class, to Alexandria’s Kristi Schwickerath, of PIES Fitness Yoga Studio, with “Yoga for Optimal Wellness” to the Reston-based Yoga 4 All Bodies’ Leanne Cusumano Roque’s “Stand on Your Own Two Feet,” which focuses on Iyengar Yoga.

Organized into three areas at Morven Park, the classes, which run concurrently, allow participants to map out a schedule for themselves or simply go with the flow.

The Calm Yoga Grove, under stately and historic trees, features a lineup of classes that embrace slow and calm movement, ideal for those new to yoga or older attendees, while across the park the Active Movement Tent inspires balance, energy and even play. The Blended Tent is home to meditation, healing workshops, children’s yoga, laughter yoga and more.

It’s the Blended Tent where Amalia Colyer will conduct a special workshop for teens, “Together Let’s De-Stress.”

Colyer created the session based on her growing De-Stress for Success (D4S) program to meet the needs of area teens who, she says, “are the children of high-achievers, pushed to be the best and set goals that aren’t really comfortable for them.”

The workshop will give teens modalities and techniques for combatting stress and anxiety in the moment – in the classroom, on the field, and in social situations.

Shelly Pentony’s workshop, “Yoga for Life’s Traumas, Large and Small” on Saturday will also give adult participants useful tools to apply to everyday life. Pentony, a trauma-informed yoga instructor, uses body-based treatments to address the physical manifestations of experiencing any kind of trauma, from surviving abuse to witnessing violence, to anxiety

caused by change. The workshop features sequencing designed to release stored up trauma so it can be better managed.

“There’s such heartache in our Northern Virginia communities,” Pentony reflects. “But everything we need to heal our trauma is already inside of us. Whatever your symptom, yoga offers a solution, a way to balance it.”

YogaFest Founder Miriam Nasuti’s hope is that those who’ve experienced loss, such as a painful divorce or loss of a loved one, and especially the sudden loss of a child, will find peace within this meaningful workshop.

Colyer and Pentony join dozens of instructors for YogaFest, many like them, from this area. Other local yogis and workshop leaders include Martha Calihan, a Certified Functional Medicine practitioner and Board-Certified Physician from Leesburg, Martha Banks-Harold from PIES Fitness Yoga Studio in Alexandria, Donna Reuss of Body n’ Brain Yoga Tai Chi in Alexandria, and Stevie Bolger of Beloved Yoga in Great Falls and Reston. The local connections mean those trying new classes at YogaFest can keep up their practice with yogis they’ve met, or attend class at their studios, after the weekend. And that’s exactly what the retreat team had in mind.

“We are navigating a world that’s really, really busy. Yin is a balance to that fast pace,” explains yogi Turi Nevin-Tukel of Turiya Yoga + Wellness in Berryville. “YogaFest is a chance for absolutely everyone to utilize yoga postures and mindfulness to slow the mind and body, and to release and relax.”

Police Beat MALICIOUS WOUNDING: n On Aug. 26 at 5:58 p.m., an individual struck another individual in the face during an altercation in the 4000 block of 5th Road North, police said.

The suspect – 55-year-old Jeffery Warren of Stafford – was arrested, charged with malicious wounding and was held without bond.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. n On Aug. 30 at 10:34 p.m., police were dispatched to the 1400 block of North Courthouse Road for a report of a stabbing.

Investigation revealed that a verbal argument escalated when one individual struck the other in the face with a knife, police said.

The suspect – 28-year-old Mamadou Seck of no fixed address – was arrested, charged with malicious wounding and was held without bond.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

In their second straight game, the defense of the Bishop O’Connell Knights struggled FOOTBALL (0-2) to stop an opponent’s running game, resulting in another lopsided loss.

The visiting Georgetown Prep Little Hoyas rushed for 385 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-7 win Sept. 2 in Arlington in high school football action.

One runner ran for 211 yards and another for 111 for Georgetown Prep.

The Little Hoyas didn’t need to throw the ball, completing just one pass for one yard.

Georgetown Prep returned the game’s opening kickoff 84 yards and led 7-0, before O’Connell tied the game at 7 when Nick Rice ran 74 yards for a touchdown and Joe Cobb converted. Georgetown Prep then scored the final four touchdowns on runs of 61, 10, nine and five yards.

There were three players with more than 100 yards rushing in the game because Rice ran for 117 yards on 24 carries.

Yorktown Opens Season With Home Victory DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

The new normal of the past two seasons is over for the Yorktown Patriots, thanks to an opening-season victory Aug. 31.

Host Yorktown won by defeating the Tigers of FOOTBALL Wilson Washington, D.C., 20-14, in high school football action to return to an old normal of seasons’ past.

Wilson routed Yorktown the past two years in season openers, in a series between the teams that began in 2005.

From that season through 2011, the Patriots defeated Wilson seven straight times, often by wide margins.

“We got a win,” Yorktown coach Bruce Hanson said. “We are a little better than we’ve been the last two seasons.

Getting to .500 or better would be a big deal for us this season.”

In this year’s win over Wilson, Yorktown used a mix of some key runs and passes on offense to gain a modest 264 yards and scored two touchdowns, got field goals of 29 and 26 yards from Adam Luncher and more than 100 allpurpose yards from Tanner Wall, who led a defense with three tackles for losses, with Wes Saulnier having the same number.

Yorktown quarterbacks Will Porter and Grant Wilson split the duties under center. They combined to pass for 117 yards and each threw a short touch-

down pass.

Yorktown never trailed, as Porter threw a three-yard scoring pass to Paul Dalzell with 36 seconds left in the first half. Luncher’s first of two extra points gave the Patriots a 7-0 halftime lead.

After the Tigers tied the game at 7 in the third, Wilson threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Wall to up the lead to 20-7 before Wilson scored with 2:15 to play.

“I thought our two quarterbacks played well,” Hanson said. “We call the same plays for both. The difference between them is slight.”

Games begin at 7 p.m. now.

Also regarding football, why can’t there be one featured public-school game of the week played on a Thursday night or Saturday afternoon so more people could see more games?

That also might be a money-maker.

As for those private-school Saturday games on fields with no lights, they should all start at 1 p.m. so natural light doesn’t become an issue once daylight-savings time ends. n All high schools should return to using full-time athletic hotlines and keep them regularly updated. Many schools have discontinued that phone service, directing information-seekers to the athletic Web sites instead, which often aren’t updated in nearly a timely-enough manner. n As for those high school athletic Web sites and Twitter accounts, all could be used much more effectively by posting updates and game and event scores as they occur, not hours later or the next morning, which unfortunately is too often the case. n Once the postseason arrives, if possible, the various district and region public-school playoff competitions should be held on alternate dates, again allowing more to watch the events. n Ease up on the loud music often played during every break in action at many types of games. Either eliminate the music or turn it down. n Only varsity football games should be played on Friday nights.

Holding other events, like field hockey and volleyball, on those evenings, cheats those contests of fans.

Wakefield Rallies to Defeat Washington-Lee in Opener JOEY CORSO For the Sun Gazette

After finishing 2-8 last fall, expectations maybe weren’t that high for the Wakefield Warriors entering the 2017 high school football season.

It might be time to readjust that WakeFOOTBALL thinking. field started the campaign with a 37-27 seesaw road victory over the Washington-Lee Generals on Aug. 31 in the opener for each Arlington team.

“Give all the credit to Wakefield, they did a great job,” W-L coach Josh Shapiro said. “They executed right and made some big plays.”

Washington-Lee defeated Wakefield, 48-21, last year.

In this year’s contest, Wakefield start-

ed the scoring with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Colton Poythress to wide receiver Xavier Taylor on the game’s first play. Luis Pinto kicked the extra point and the Warriors were in front, 7-0.

Washington-Lee answered quickly with a touchdown when first-year starting quarterback Ryan Dodds led a drive capped when Tysheem LeGrand plunged in from two yards out to cut the deficit to 7-6, as the two-point conversion run failed.

The Generals took a 12-7 lead when Dodds passed three yards to LeGrand, with a conversion pass failing.

“Ryan played well, showed a lot of moxie,” Shapiro said. “He commanded the offense, handled the personnel and showed good leadership.”

Wakefield answered with the final 10 points of the first half to lead, 17-12 at

halftime. Poythress passed six yards to Ian Sheffey and Pinto converted for a 14-12 lead. Pinto booted a 28-yard field goal to end the first-half scoring.

In the third period, W-L went back ahead, 20-17, on a 20-yard pass from Dodds to Jabari Johnson, followed by Larry Carpenter’s conversion run.

Wakefield’s Rodney Lee added three short scoring runs to help the Warriors pull away by reeling off 20 unanswered points. A 24-yard Braden Shackelford to Carpenter pass ended the scoring.

Both teams operated heavily out of the shotgun offense, mixing in quick passes with quarterback options and running-back draw plays.

Behind strong line blocking, Lee had 193 yards rushing for Wakefield.

Poythress was 9 of 18 passing for 139 yards, with Taylor having three catches

for 82 yards. James Clark had three catches and Lamont McDowell one for 27.

For Washington-Lee, Carpenter had eight catches for 101 yards, Johnson three for 29, and Robert Sovula and Daquoi Moore had two each. Johnson rushed for 66 yards, Dodds for 33 yards and LeGrand for 23. Dodds was 15 of 24 passing for 160 yards and Shackelford passed for 48.

Gabriel Matteson had a fumble recovery for Washington-Lee. For Wakefield, Isaiah Mefford had an interception that set up the second-quarter field goal and Xaviar Goodwin had a fumble recovery.

On Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., Wakefield hosts the Yorktown Patriots in another all-Arlington clash while Washington-Lee plays at West Springfield.

The 10-time defending conference champion Bishop O’Connell Knights girls cross country team is expected to make a strong bid to continue its title run this fall.

The private-school team opened the 2017 season with strong showings in various races at the PR Kickoff Invitational at Bull Run Regional Park. The senior

girls placed fourth and the freshman girls The CROSS COUNTRY won. two-mile races included public-school teams.

In the senior girls race, Ryley Howard led the way by finishing fifth. Other top finishers were Ginny Brough, Grace Pullman and Lauren Christenson.

In the freshman race, O’Connell’s Tess Brinkman won in 13:14. Other top-10 finishers were Sasha Visek, Anna Goodson and Isabella Berg-Patton.

“We have a lot of talent and young depth, and the boys teams should be strong as well,” said O’Connell coach Cindy Walls, whose girls squad also is the defending Division I state champion.

One runner O’Connell doesn’t have this season is Madeline Fleenor, who transferred to Lake Braddock and is running for the public-school team. She was a top finisher for the Knights in last year’s conference meet.

For the O’Connell boys at the PR Kickoff Invitational, Matt Tillson was 22nd in the senior race, Tommy Cook 24th and Mike Isacco 27th. The team placed fifth.

In the junior boys race, first-round cross country Max Greczyn was second.

The next competition for the O’Connell teams is at the Saturday, Sept. 9 Monroe Parker Invitational at Burke Lake Park.

High School Roundup YORKTOWN GOLFERS WIN COUNTY MATCH: The long winning streak continued, and this year by a wide margin, for the Yorktown Patriots in the annual allArlington county golf competition.

Yorktown won this year’s three-team event with a 161 team score Aug. 31 at East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, D.C. The title was Yorktown’s 31st in a row, having won the championship every year dating back to 1987.

“We had some of our best rounds of the season so far,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams said about the nine-hole match. “The players knew what was at stake.”

The Rogue finished second in a national Ultimate Frisbee tourney.

The 10th-seeded under-20 D.C. Rogue, a women’s Ultimate Frisbee team consisting of many Arlington players, finished second in the recent Youth Club National Championships.

The Rogue won their pool, upseting 12-time defending champions and topseed Seattle in the quarterfinals, then defeated second-seed Cincinnati in the semifinals.

In the championship match, the Rogue lost to the No. 4 seed Warhawks of Chapel Hill, 15-10.

“No one expected the 10th seed to do what it did this weekend,” Rogue coach Julia Petro said.

“Ours was the ‘pool of death,’” Washington-Lee High School graduate and Rogue player Rachel Hess said.

Rogue coach Jenny Fey agreed and said the match against Seattle was important.

“Our players stepped up – despite having to play an extra game that Seattle didn’t have – and matched them point for point,” Fey said. “Given their reputation and their history of success, it would have been understandable if our players had been intimidated. But they weren’t.”

In the semis, the Rogue defeated a taller Cincinnati team with a key second-half adjustment.

“In the second half, our coaches put tall and aggressive players on their handlers preventing them from being able to make the high throws,” Sanz said. “And it worked.”

At the divisional meet a week earlier, both won two races. Rachel won the 9-10 free (33.79) and 9-10 backstroke (41.07) and Sean was first in the 13-14 free (26.09) and 13-14 IM (1:06.53).

They each won multiple races during the NVSL’s regular season.

In addition, the busy Rachel Conley participated in the NVSL’s diving allstar competition at Oakton pool the day after the swimming all-stars. She finished 17th in the freshman girls competition.

Donaldson Run’s Peter Fleckenstein was ninth in senior boys and Ellie Simons was 12th in the intermediate girls.

“It’s just not enough to eat the chili,” intoned Tom Perriello, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for governor in the spring and of late has been active in backing the ticket of Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring.

Perriello exhorted the crowd to help “build a wave of Democratic energy so strong that it brings the House of Delegates with us,” although that may be a challenge, as Republicans currently have a healthy 17-seat majority in the 100-member body, and previous Democratic efforts to cut into it have fallen well short.

Hope springs eternal. “We’re going to get darn close in the House of Delegates,” predicted U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th).

But to win statewide races, “we’re going to need a big, big turnout in Arlington,” Beyer said.

than 33,000 votes over Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the governor’s race, or about 60 percent of his total margin of victory.

More critically for the party, Arlington also delivered a majority of about 33,000 votes for Democratic attorney general candidate Mark Herring, who won his race by a scant 900 votes statewide.

This year, local Democrats are working to ramp up absentee voting, which opens Sept. 22. Not all those absentee voters will be Democrats, but recent history suggests perhaps two-thirds will. In 2013, McAuliffe won 79.5 percent of the 7,283 absentee votes cast for governor in Arlington, well above his overall county majority of 71.6 percent.

While three of the four members of the Arlington delegation to the General As-

sembly – Democrats all – are unopposed, Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-49th) is facing a challenge, as are Democratic County Board nominee Erik Gutshall and School Board endorsee Monique O’Grady. But political facts of life suggest those races are unlikely to be competitive, so the Arlington Democratic leadership will use its political muscle to held candidates in tossup districts outside the county’s borders.

“You all always come through. Double down one more time, do it again,” said Susan Swecker, chairman of the Democratic Committee of Virginia.

Because so much of local governance depends on the balance of power in Richmond, victories or defeats at the statewide level can have a significant trickle-down effect on communities, party regulars

were reminded.

“Be inspired, be invigorated,” said School Board member Tannia Talento, a co-coordinator of the chili cookoff, who said success in November would ensure “a community that stays the community we want to live in.”

The annual chili cookoff served as an unofficial start of fall politicking season for local Democrats. Elected officials, candidates and others competed for prizes with chili recipes that ranged from mild to wild, from vegetarian to meat-laden.

Enough awards were presented to ensure none of the entrants went away emptyhanded.

“An amazing line-up,” Talento said of the options arrayed in the competition.
