A year after a preliminary agreement was signed, the Arlington County government and Virginia Hospital Center appear to be working methodically toward a land swap they expect to benefit both sides. “In our minds, there is a timeline,” said Adrian Stanton, vice president and chief marketing officer for the hospital, which is eager to acquire an adjacent 5.5-acre, government-owned property for expansion purposes. That adjoining property – dubbed the “Edison Street site” for its location on North Edison Street – previously was used by the government for public-health purposes, but staff and programs have been relocated. Hospital officials have offered either to pay for it or swap one or more parcels in an exchange with the county government. In September 2015, County Board members signed a non-binding letter of intent with the hospital to move forward to a deal. Three months later, the two sides inked an option agreement that will allow the hospital to acquire the parcel at any time between 30 months and 48 months into the future – but no earlier and no later. The swap could include cash, parcels currently owned by the hospital, or both. County officials in 2015 said the appraised value of the Edison Street parcel is $12.56
