Arlington County Board Chairman Libby Garvey on June 14 survived a primary challenge from Planning Commission Vice Chairman Erik Gutshall, winning with a 10-percentage-point cushion. In so doing, Garvey beat back a coalition of current and former elected officials and Democratic activists, angered at her independent streak, and virtually assured herself of winning a new term in November. Garvey won 8,362 votes, or 55 percent, to 6,878 for Gutshall, according to Election Night totals reported by county election officials. Total turnout – 15,240 – was higher than the generally expected 10,000 to 12,000. During the campaign, Garvey attempted to position herself as above party politics. “I try to treat everyone with respect,” she said. “I work with Republicans, I work with Democrats – I work with everyone.” Garvey has made no apologies about her efforts to build political bridges, whether in the local community or in Richmond. “They help me, I help them,
