The chairman of Arlington’s School Board says she and her colleagues will listen carefully to community input and feedback as they embark on the almost-always-contentious issue of boundary changes in coming months. “We intend to be positive and constructive and hear all voices,” board chairman Barbara Kanninen said. Board members plan on tackling middleschool boundaries in the fall, then move on to elementary-school boundaries next spring. The changes that are adopted will go into effect for the 2019-20 school year, when a new elementary school and new middle school are slated to open. Getting new boundaries in place early will give parents and students a chance to digest the changes and their impact, Kanninen said. “We’re a year early, so there’s plenty of time,” she said during a presentation to the Arlington County Democratic Committee. School Board members earlier this year wrapped up a modest set of revisions to highschool boundaries, an effort that started with praise for the amount of community engagement but ended with criticism from some that the changes exacerbated racial and ethnic imbalances among Wakefield, Washington-Lee

Practice for the 2017 high school football season started Aug. 1, earlier this season than in the past, with teams also set to start scrimmages and the regular season earlier, as well. Wakefield Warriors scrimmages: Friday, Aug. 11 vs. Osbourn Park, 6 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 17, vs. Heritage, 7 p.m. Washington-Lee Generals scrimmages: Friday, Aug. 11 at Chantilly, 6 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 17 vs. Oakton, 7 p.m. Yorktown Patriots scrimmages: Friday, Aug. 18 vs. Lee, 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 24 at Stone Bridge, 7 p.m. Bishop O’Connell Knights scrimmage: Friday, Aug. 11 vs. Gonzaga, 4:30 p.m. The regular season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 31 for Wakefield and Washington-Lee; Saturday, Aug. 26 for Bishop O’Connell; and Thursday, Aug. 31 for Yorktown.
