Field Set at Four in Democratic Caucus No Last-Minute Surprises in Race to Succeed Fisette

As expected, the field firmed up at four for the Arlington County Democratic Committee (ACDC) County Board caucus next month. Vivek Patil, Erik Gutshall, Kim Klingler and Peter Fallon each qualified for the ballot by last week’s deadline. They will compete in three days of voting – May 9, 11 and 13 – at venues across the county, with the winner moving on to the Nov. 7 general election. With the exception of Patil, all the candidates have sought the Democratic nomination for County Board, unsuccessfully, in the past. The seat opened when County Board Chairman Jay Fisette, who was first elected in 1997, announced plans not to seek a sixth term. Fisette has endorsed Gutshall; other Arlington elected officials are in the process of choosing up sides, although some will likely remain neutral. Gutshall, Klingler and Patel each kicked off their candidacies at the March ACDC meeting; Fallon is expected to do so at the monthly meeting that is slated for this week. The filing period, which closed March 30, brought no surprise entries into the race. Immediately after the filing deadline, Arlington Democratic leaders drew positions for the caucus ballot, which will run Fallon, Patil, Klingler, Gutshall. The Democratic rank-and-file in February opted for a party-run caucus, rather than the state-run June primary, as the method of nominating their County Board candidate. The decision reversed a recent trend, which saw the party turning to primaries, including in Continued on Page 23
